Visited a comic shop out of the way I hadn't been in for six years and asked owner how it was going. He made a face and said, "lot of my customers are cancelling their subscriptions. I'm not pulling new books much anymore." "Really? Why?" I asked. The guy only knows me on sight and says without a single hesitation, "Because of the agendas in the books. I'm doing pretty well selling back issues online."
And there we have it: A medium that once had promise reduced to yard sale items. Thanks, Big 2!

It’s always funny how Casually Comics can roast something while sounding really nice about it at the same time. It’s a good inversion of Thinking Critical where even when he likes something he sounds like a dad who’s surprised his son isn’t an idiot today (which is also hilarious).

The plotline with Fire inviting supervillans to gain clout is the sort of thing that would have ended with her being spanked by one of the male heroes in a 30's or 40's comic. And it would have been a better story.

Ha! The Disney Channel fried _my_ storytelling brains back in the days when they had no original programming, so they had to pad out the schedule with third-party, nightmare fuel glazed movies.
So I guess if I got tapped to do a slice-of-life DC comic, it'd end up being about Batgirl going insane and having a scrawny frog-man bite off her finger, while a drunk skeleton points and screams at 'em. But it'd have really nice watercolor backgrounds.

Got to the part with the shark. I know who these comics are for now. There is a meta on youtube where creators, often with special needs, will adopt a character. Usually a character from a cartoon or video game as a self insert. These comics are for the enjoyment of writer not the audience.
There is no audience beyond the writer.

She's trying to do an anime-style "sweet and innocent" character, which is demonstrated, in part, by the mother treating her like she's 6.
This could potentially work, but it needs a lot more groundwork than this comic has, especially given the use of pre-established characters and a world that isn't really conducive to this style of anime trope.

In much the same way the modern "Girlboss" fails by mis-imagining what a real boss/leader is, and then trying (but failing) to imitate it with a coat of pink- the modern comic writer similarly mis-imagines what a real fan is like, and then tries (but fails) to cater to it with unwanted hard rights into the author's own life and political beliefs..... It's like, I wish I could sit these people down and tell them "Hey, I remember being 9 years old, and reading comics, know what I didn't ever, not once, think? Even as a snot-nosed kid? I never once thought "Boy, I wish this comic was about me and my personal problems so I could be represented. Why can't Super Dude have problems at school with bad math grades and few friends, just like me?!" I only thought "Wow, Super Dude punched that robot through a BUILDING, that's so cool!"

That's the best description of a fan's expectation when he reads a superhero comic.

Breaking news; Portland/LA/NY SJWs have such a narrow worldview/depth of life experience that they can't even fathom moving to a small town and being able to afford to live without a roommate/vaguely sexual life partner. The art is okay, like a Scooby Doo comic for a cereal that is already on sale, I mean if the artist added more curves to those figures and a little less noses of old women with the bodies of girls entering adolescence, there are the fundamentals for beautiful women, which does not solve the problem that they are lesbians and that the panels, instead of having action scenes destroying public and private property alike by throwing out the villains or the heroines, are like story boards for a pitch from a rejected season of Harley Quinn. In some RUclips live, I heard from a writer nicknamed script doctor that the writers on strike have the alternative of migrating to the comics industry to survive, which seems to be a total ignorance of the situation of this industry, but at least it is positive .

If this was written properly, like Rhino or Juggernaut or basically any big muscle character, they might say one line while charging, not read an entire sonnet from a Shakespeare play because he'd need the length of the street to say all that while running. This gave me PTSD from reading and looking like that Squirrel Girl run from way back. I miss the days when you'd rip books like this in half, but I wouldn't want you wasting real money on stuff like this.

I'm sorry, but Eminem is not so popular that his songs have permeated American culture to the point that people know his songs without knowing who he is (except possibly Lose Yourself or Rap God). If she was singing Bohemian Rhapsody or Sweet Home Alabama, without knowing who Queen or Lynard Skynard are, I could see it.

I'm confused. Why are they in Smallville? Is crime in Smallville really high? Is Smallville the center of some place?
Why are they hanging out with Martha Kent? Does Superman no longer have a secret identity?
And wouldn't Fire and Ice know that if trouble occurs in Smallville, there's a near certainty that Superman is going to show up?
Why are they hanging out in their uniforms while having a book club over or moping in their room? When was this book club meeting arranged? They just got to Smallville and they're having a book club meeting the next day?
Also, I really dislike calling people "Karens." I know two women whose name is Karen and they're both really nice. Isn't calling a woman a "Karen" a bit sexist?

Why is it that Archie comics - which are slice of life comics that have a kind of kitchy vibe to them - are better than these comics? I don’t understand who looks at this and says that what female-led comics need are low-effort, low-stakes stories where everyone eats stuff and talks about things.
I don’t even know anything about Fire other than she’s Brazilian, and yet I *still know that this comic is writing her wrong.*

She is using Karen in its Bailey meaning. The Motte that is easy to defend is that 'Karen' means a woman acting unreasonably in an entitled way.
The Bailey, or word as regularly used is 'any white woman complaining for any reason'. That is why Fire defends with Ethnicity.* A mixed race woman cant be a Karen (ignoring how many Brazilians are just Meds or Aryans)

Dodson's cover art compared to what you actually get inside the book is the main reason I went from spending $30 a week to $4.99. I don't care how "good" the storyline is (and that doesn't matter once said storyline eventually gets retconned), if the art sucks I'm not buying.
