WGHP FOX 8 (High Point NC) Analog Sign-off 12 June 2009

  • Hands down, this is the best of the analog TV farewells from the Piedmont Triad of North Carolina. Features the final five minutes or so of the FOX 8 10:00 News with Bob Buckley and Julie Luck. There's a trip down Channel 8's memory lane, the National Anthem, and the button-pushing ceremony at the transmitter site in Sophia, NC. This was recorded "over the air" using rabbit ears and a VCR. I've also included at the end a recording from cable of the final moments at the transmitter site, followed by the opening of that night's episode of "Seinfeld".

    True enough, this is the best analog TV "farewell" in the entire USA. You have a complete package here - bits of history, the National Anthem, and the press of the button - with past luminaries to boot.

    WGHP did such a good job with the shut off, it was a nostalgic and fitting tribute to the station. The only local station that really did anything. WFMY had a sort of tribute but it was lacking, WXII didn't even do one. That was pathetic, but it's hard to believe it has been 4 years since then.

      WFMY just decided to play the SSB
      as for going off and calling WSJS pathetic, you really have to give WSJS-TV props since channel 12 got the timing Correctly, they cut to nightlight at 11:59:59 PM.

    This was one of the better goodbyes to analog. Some were abrupt, without hoopla, others, like this, paid a fitting tribute to a bygone era for television.

    Wow. Reminds me of the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection shutdown and people paying tribute with final matches before shutdown. Still surprises me how the televisions I grew up with had that coaxial connector (before composite) and even the prongs when the NES was around.

    On his Twitter feed about the DTV transition, the Fox 8 engineer told us to expect something special for the occasion, and they didn't disappoint. I understand the art department was especially proud of that 60s vintage KJL-88 slate.

      @DanTheMan1985ful 6 лет назад +3

      You do realize that KJL-88 is the High Point Studio to the remote Transmitter site in Sophia Microwave relay Link, right? That's what STL stands for; Studio to Transmitter Link. The studio sends the signal to the transmitter and the transmitter relays that same signal for home reception.

    I do live in NC. in fact, I live in the Piedmont Triad between Winston-Salem and Kernersville. I recorded several dozen sign-offs of NC-SC-VA TV stations between Autumn 1988 and June 1993. All were received over-the-air at my home. I also recorded a few from Eastern NC stations off the cable during vacations at Topsail Island, NC during 1993-2000.

    It's been 7 years since then... 2009 was a great year for me, and didn't really care at the time to realize that it was the last year of the 00's decade. I remember a few people saying they were kinda sad that the decade was over, and I was like uh time is still going on its just a new year and decade. Now looking back I myself am sad and nostalgic that it's over and realizing that it's been 7 years since '09 plus we are towards the end of this decade with the rest of this year to go with 3 more years then the year will be 2020... Man time is passing by!

    I Remember WGHP Channel 8 45 Year anniversary. ABC Affiliate then Fox Affiliate. Analog Shutoff was 2009.

  • @RustyMuck
    @RustyMuck 15 лет назад +6

    Very true. Although WJW would occasionally dot the "i" in "ei8ht" with the CBS eye, the call letters for both logos are on the same exact spot (on top of the "8").
    WJW would revive that logo a year after their affiliation switch to Fox, in late 1995.

    WGHP's DTV transmission had been on a temporary UHF channel.
    They were turning the ch-8 DTV signal on after the analog vacated ch-8.

    • @wesleytan6842
      @wesleytan6842 3 года назад +1

      The DTV channel went back permanently to their pre-DTV UHF channel, Ch. 35, due to loss of viewers, and VHF Ch. 8 was permanently discontinued. In 2020, they moved to UHF Ch. 31.

    I have TWC and was watching Fox 8 when the switch took place. I dont know if it was Fox 8 or TWC, but it went out for almost 15 mins. I turned over to WXII 12 and seen the switch there too.

  • @MarkMichaelSalin

    Found something from Fybush.com: Their backup analog transmitter was the one used to "symbolically switch-on" their DTV signal. Their original digital transmitter (which is not in the video) has been on for a couple of years before that.

    • @mcydodge919

      At the time, they switched their digital channel from 35 to 8. Then they got complaints from people not being able to pick up 8, so the FCC let them broadcast on both 8 and 35 for a few months until they chose 35 full-time.

    At 1:45, it would appear that the 'ei8ht' logo variant was the same as used by WJW-TV in Cleveland from 1966 to 1977.

    Yeah, the KJL-88 slide was cool. I was too young to remember that particular one, though. The one I remember from the 1970s was of a different design. I wish they could've thrown in the Seal of Good Practice for good measure.

    I miss the days when you would have a Sermonette, there was the obligatory "Good Night " & station id, & then the National Anthem would play & then a test pattern. When did 24 hour TV start, & who came up with that Idea?😐

    I wish they hadn't made the switch to analog to digital so let's say that old TV brings back memories of your grandpa you don't want to pay for our digital TV receiver they should keep the analog TV transmitter on build the digital Tower right beside the analog power everyone agrees with me reply to me what you think

    • @QueenDynamo
      @QueenDynamo 3 года назад +1

      Analog transmission has been given to telecommunications companies in the US like T-Mobile to improve network signals. But really, the analog VHF anr UHF signals are intended to be used for first-responders (especially for emergency situations).
