I never followed the band early on. Now, almost 60 years old I am really listening and watching these old videos. I get such a feeling of endearment and respect between them. I’ve never seen anything like it.
It's amazing how humble the Young brothers are, and how much respect they have for each others playing. Here Malcolm talks about how Angus might go down as the greatest ever. You listen to Angus and he does nothing but praise Malcolm's playing. Said that Malcolm could easily do what Angus does, but he couldn't do what Malcolm does. I believe that, because Angus is hyper. He wouldn't have the patience to be a human metronome, like Mal, and keep perfect time. He needs to go off on a tangent. I'd just say that they are the greatest lead and rhythm guitar duo ever to play. Malcolm is the cake and Angus is the icing.
I wonder what collectively their take would have been on the Towson State College show- Malcolm says here that live it’s tough to hear what Angus does on stage- that show was super tight, and the energy was relentless. I heard an interview once where Malcolm said, “You live for the nights where the band is really cookin’” and that’s one of them, without question.
I love how Angus and Malcolm never stop talking about how much they admire each other’s contributions to the band rather than their own. They were the ultimate bromance in rock lol. Literally!
What a down to earth guy malcom was and a true professional, a rock legend i still can't believe i'm talking about him in the past tense we miss you man. RIP. Malcom Young.
That's a bloody good point Malcolm makes about Angus's ability as a guitarist... he is one shit hot rock guitar player and one day the world will regard him as one of the very best there ever was. It's easy to miss just how good he is as a player, as his guitar work has always pretty much been overshadowed by his showmanship, which in itself is phenomenal..
I think Angus is the best live guitarist ever. Simply because he never makes mistakes. He plays his solos with a bit of a sloppy feel by the man is a machine. In fact that is what made AC/DC the greatest live act ever imo. None of them ever mess up.
hes a virtuoso, theres been others, but hes the greatest one performing right now. not many people can command an audience with a musical instrument like he does, hendrix is the only one I can think of
The best “ live band “ there was, is, every will be. I play AC/DC 95% of the time will driving. My kids by age of 4 could recognize AC/CD songs on the radio.
Acdc got me through so many rough times in my life when I lost my dad my grandpa my brother when my health went to hell I lay in a hospital bed and couldn't move I had my wife play acdc for me and whala here I am I love you guys with all my heart and soul thank you for always being there and for making me feel like you were playing just for me
Malcolm was not underrated nor he could have cared less for being rated at all. By being so insightful and having effortless and organic understanding of what the Rock 'n' Roll really is all about, as much as the business aspect of the showbusiness, he added his intuitive compositions and riffs to the whole picture. He was a genius.
So Many Great Memories from 77 to 2008 I have 18 Shows on 12 Tours only 88 I missed and 2015 Which for me Was A ? Brian Angus Cliff ,No Phil And Malcolm Gone I Am Glad I Saw them Before All Came Apart ,Hope They Are Doing Well ,Retired I Am Sure Was Not Easy Esp the Way it's been Since Malcolm was out of the Picture
It really touches me when angus said "When Malcolm says it's good, i know it's good." With Malcolm gone, being the leader of the band, how will the band be sure if their work is good? Of course, we as fans love it, and i absolutely love Play Ball and Rock or Bust already, but how will Malcolm experience this?
***** There isn't a song called "Man Down" on the track listing. There is a song called "Hard Times" that could possibly be about the current situation.
This is a very telling interview. The way Angus describes it it seems like Malcolm is the quality control and brains behind the music. I'm not sure they can deal with his loss beyond this next tour as far as new material is concerned.
Yep... Malcolm was always the driving engine of that band, right from the beginning he's always been the one who swung the axe so to speak. I agree... can't see em going that much longer without him. But we could be wrong... who knows?
Great, thank you so much. Almost cute how Malcolm mentions AC/DC and the Stones as the only big Rock N Roll bands left. They are huge fans of Keith Richards and Co.
People tend to think that AC/DC is Angus' band, but it isn't. It's Malcolm's. He was definitely the leader and shot caller, although he did ask for Angus' opinion on most everything. One of the greatest rhythm guitarists ever. RIP Mal. Thanks for the great music!
I love the partnership between Mal and Angus. Whenever Angus wasn't sure about a new riff idea, he wouldn't trust anyone else's judgment, but Mal's. They were a great team and they supported each other musically and as brothers. Mal believed in Angus and knew what he was capable of, that really shows how much he had faith Angus and knew he would go onto greater things.
My second ac/dc show with my dad 20.6.2001, a few days before my 11 birthday. Rocking on the right side of the stage on the 3 row. Never forget that day with megadeth and offspring as support. Got me hooked, never missed a show in switzerland since then!!
Get well soon Malcolm best wishes to you and ur family. And for Phill he's a fuckin machine on the drums and as for angus young he's a fuckin great guitarist to both young bothers are underrated but in my books they are number 1
wow thanks for posting this interview!! I have never heard Malcolm say how important Phil is to the sound of acdc..it just doesn't have that umpth… without Phil.
Malcolm is so right about Bon's lyrics. Sure, they're dirty and sleazy, but there's a really beautiful sort of blue-collar poetry to them if you read them. Songs like Down Payment Blues and Ain't No Fun (Waiting Around to be a Millionaire) have a real wistful yearning to them. Funny, but poignant at the same time. I think he could've really gone on to do more amazing things lyrically had he lived.
He should have gone solo to open up the doors to more different genre and also to clear up is health. but yes He was in the fast lane... on the highway to hell
The one thing that makes me upset about these interviews is that when you hear Malcolm speak or you see footage of Bon Scott, they are no longer with us,it makes you feel sad😢The only original members that are still in AC/DC Today is Brian Johnson and Angus Young,it makes you appreciate the years of enjoyment they gave us fans, I hope to enjoy many more years of it,as they cannot be replaced 😢😢😢😢❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Other than maybe Charlie Watts, Ringo, and when he wanted to, John Bonham, no one else has that swing to their playing like Phil Rudd. Most drummers don't have it. You either do, or you don't. I've been a drummer for over 30 years, and hell I don't have it either.
This might be the best AC/DC interview on youtube. It's so refreshing to hear them say things that AC/DC fans have not heard 1000+ times before. Thank you for posting this!
Loved what Malcolm said about Angus in the end of this video and it's true. Angus is capable of so much more than we know him for, but it's time for him to break out of that damned shell once and for all and show it. They need to release the new album, tour it, then Angus come out with a solo release that will blow everybody's mind with him playing shit other than what people would be expecting to hear from him. " C'mon, Angus, let 'er rip !!! Give us some Robin Trower type shit.
+ReneeNme I reckon Angus one day will do exactly that. Make a solo guitar album of his own... just to show what a complete guitarist he actually is. I imagine it may likely be a blues based album... really ripping in with his own brand of raw feel and emotion. I'd love to hear that!
That is funny, but goddamn... Phil has THE sweetest, smoothed 4/4 back beat I've ever heard. I love good technical drumming, but NO drummer I've heard has ever played a solid 4/4 back beat as smoothly and powerfully as Phil. The man is a metronome.
There are very few bands that I would say that I actually love but AC/DC certainly fits the bill. I can still remember riding with my buddies to a skating rink to hookup with some girls and Drexel popping in Dirty Deeds. Life changing in many ways.

Malcolm's humility is unsurpassed. The whole group, really. It's refreshing.
I think the greatest character trait you can have, especially if you are rock star famous, is humility. It makes good people love you.

I just like watching Malcolm speaking... he was such a smooth guy... Im sad that I wont be able to see him live with the rest of the band
Milan Herich I saw them live in Sydney in 91 I think, memory isn’t what it used to be, and that was the best concert I’ve ever seen in my life.
He never wanted the attention, just wanted to play, that, I think, says it all about him, RIP Malcolm.

It really doesnt get more down to earth pure Rock n Roll honesty than that
I really miss Malcolm Young. I miss being young. I say it today, and I'll say it at the end. Far and away, that was my band.
Miss Malcolm so much 😔
