I like how the guitar tech looks into the camera now and then. He really is talking to the people watching this, and very enthusiastic about telling us what we wanna hear.
58 Thumbs down? Unsure what those folks were looking for, but as an AC/DC fan since the mid 1970's and guitarist for 50 years, this is an amazing glimpse into the rig of the gods. The Tech is great on camera - very communicative - the guy doing the interviews asks the right questions.....a really good interview that delivers the goods for any guitar nerd and AC/DC fan.
So cool. A couple days before classes started, during my freshman year in college, a group of us went to see AC/DC at Vets Auditorium in Des Moines, Iowa. It was their Back in Black tour. We had general admission floor tickets and worked our way to the front, during the opening act. When AC/DC took the stage, I was standing within 10’ of Angus; and that killer SG; so close I hot hit by some of his sweat droplets, while he was trashing about. Really awesome show. Great memory.
Many have already said it here but I'll say it again: this is a knowledgeable tech, sharing lots of killer info willingly, moving fast, not wasting time, showing that Angus is the real deal (no off-the-wall effects). If you are into rock, and especially AC/DC, this is one of the most valuable and informative eight minute videos you'll ever see.
I saw them with Bon in a college gym. It was so loud and so tight. At the the end of each song, they had to roll the knobs back to keep the sound from freakin out. I am glad to hear him confirm what I perceived.
I use silicone sealer around and underneath the pickup covers to keep sweat out. It's cheap, easy to do, easy to remove and it works perfectly. Great interview, useful info for all Angus fans, thank you.
Getting waves of nostalgia - I did the lights when AC-DC played at my high school back in '75. If I recall correctly, Angus's SG had pairs of Strat pickups. 😁🙃😎👍
The all black SG is the ultimate Rock machine for live performance! I have always seen Angus mostly playing this one live on the Black ice / Rock or bust tours, just like on the dvd's live at Donington, No bull, River plate, etc...
I had no idea that guitar was so old! I’ve seen it countless times in photos and performances but unless you have it right in front of your face it looks MINT.
I've always loved that black and white custom. I've seen a lot of old pictures and some videos from the _Back In Black / Highway To Hell_ era of Angus playing it, and it's always been one of my favorites of his. That one and his first SG, the walnut finish one with the vibrola piece that you see in pictures from the very early AC/DC days and even the pre-AC/DC days.
I believe the black and white custom in this video is NOT the famous SG he used in the Let There Be Rock movie (Paris '79) but yet another custom he acquired in 1980, for the Back In Black tour. There's pictures of it on the internet. It was indeed a 3 pick up wallnut custom, and it was pretty original/untouched when he used it live. Guess it got a re-finish years later. So even though this custom has the same b/w color scheme as the Highway to Hell era custom, I don't think this is that guitar. Unfortunately. That would've been REALLY cool! PS. Great taste. His original black and white custom and his first SG are also my favs!
This is great. I just figured the black SG Angus played was a sig model when I was lucky enough to see them for Black Ice. Didn't know it was a '67. and yep, just stopped to tune it once, late in the gig, just before the 'solo' (elevated platform, etc). Great show.

Man, super interesting stuff! I didn’t think about the sweat impacting the electronics until it happened to me at an outdoor acoustic gig. And using the volume knob vs pedals simplifies things on stage

Yes, they have to pause for awhile but many don't lose a dime. Big touring outfits look after their people like family. Their experience and availability are crucial to getting the ''machine'' rolling again.
I've been playing electric guitar for 45 years. I also ride the volume control. I don't use effects either other than a little overdrive and reverb. If you want the true Angus sound you can't get it. It's in his fingers.
These are just touring guitars. His actual #1, the first SG he bought, was a '72 (if I remember right) that he bought in '73 just before Malcolm put the band together. It was rebuilt around 1980 by a custom luthier (I can't remember his name) who put lightning bolt inlays in the fretboard, after which it was retired from live shows. It's the only guitar he records albums with, and every AC/DC album, in fact every single song to my knowledge, has been recorded with THAT SG.
@@MrJeopold Yes, Jay Dee, that's who it was. Thank you. Also, I'm pretty sure his original SG was a '71, not a '72 like I thought, and it had the electronics all restored in between the Powerage and Highway to Hell albums, then it was totally rebuilt after the Highway to Hell tour.
Angus’s first guitar was actually at 1968 Gibson SG that he bought in 1970. It originally had a maestro vibrato tailpiece but he removed it and replaced it with a standard stop bar tailpiece. It was a cherry red colour so I don’t think he will ever perform with it live again but I think he will only use it for recording. But that being said he does on several more.
@@kgunitkeese17 I've done extensive research on Angus' guitars in the months since making this comment, as this video piqued my interest... (fair warning, this is gonna be a long read) Technically, his FIRST guitar was a banjo. He modified it to hold six strings so he could play it like a guitar when he was in his early teens. His first REAL guitar was a Hoffner that Mal gave him when Mal got his red Gretsch Firebird, around the time Angus was 15 or so. The next guitar he got, also the first one he bought himself, was his original Gibson SG. After piecing together pictures, interviews and other people's research, I've determined that THAT guitar was a late 1970, 1971 or early 1972 SG standard with a natural walnut finish (not cherry red) that he bought in 1972. It cannot be any earlier than a '70 model because it had a "volute" on the neck, a feature Gibson started featuring in 1970. By 1974, Angus had removed the arm from the tremolo, but the tremolo itself wasn't removed until late '77 or early '78 when he had an adjustable "stop bar" tailpiece installed, after Mal had one installed on his Gretsch. The truss rod of that SG was broken and repaired incorrectly around 1977, whoever did it actually welded the rod back together which burned a lot of wood out of the neck. The headstock was broken at least twice, again according to interviews and other researchers, and in the middle of the Powerage tour the guitar had to be retired from live use due to the body wood rotting out around the control cavity. At that point, he began using the guitars that would become known as "the Highway to Hell SG" (nearly identical to his original except that this one WAS cherry red) and "the Back in Black SG" (originally a white SG custom that he painted black and removed the middle pickup around 1977 [I believe this tech is incorrect about it being the walnut finished custom]). His original SG was then sent to JayDee who had previously rewound the pickups and replaced the control pots as well as replacing the truss rod and repairing the burnt wood in the neck, only this time the body was so rotten it couldn't be repaired. According to J.D. himself, in an interview YEARS after the work was done, he "built" a new guitar for Angus to replace that SG, and the only thing he was able to salvage was the headstock veneer. Again, this rebuild was done in 1978/'79, when Angus was having him do work on several of his guitars, and the interview where J.D. states this was from around 2000, so it's possible that he was mistaken about the details. I've also read that he either used another Gibson SG body and neck, or he made a new body and neck himself, and reused all of the electronics, the fretboard and the headstock veneer from Angus' original SG, but so far I've been unable to confirm exactly how the guitar was rebuilt. It's possible that "the Donington SG" which J.D. personally delivered to Angus right before going on stage at Donington in 1981 is the rebuilt incarnation of his original SG, but I haven't been able to confirm that either. Since that guitar was used for lots of live shows throughout the 80s, it's unlikely. Most likely, as you said and many others have claimed, the guitar was returned to Angus and he strictly used it for recording afterword and it has never again been seen by the public.
Never been that big of an AC/DC fan, but I respect them and Angus. I would be a liar if I didn’t say that Angus didn’t tempt me at some point to get an SG.
I agree, the band just doesn't do it for me, but gotta give them their due for their tone. I prefer Les Paul's over SGs by a long shot, but Angus's SG sound is killer.
My suspicion is that Angus could join any band and totally rock it the same way. Love to know what he plans on doing when live performing comes back. Is he going to come back too, and if so will he consider sticking with the AC DC name without Malcolm?
I was hoping to hear mention of our product The Schaffer Replica EX Tower. Though Angus and his techs have always claimed that he uses no effects, the Schaffer-Vega wireless system he used to record their biggest albums and on stage had an optical limiter+compressor+expander+EQ enhancer+harmonic clipping+boost+line buffer. That's a lot of effects! We rediscovered this circuit 35 years after it was banned by the FCC and reproduced everything except the outdated wireless tech with the original inventor Ken Schaffer. Angus received unit #1 and has been using The Schaffer Replica since the Rock or Bust rehearsals. He owns several units and attributes them to his best tone ever.
The original pickups from the SG were T-Tops, a5 wound around mid 7k. My guess for the Seymour Duncan equivalent would be to get two neck-position 59's that vary slightly in resistance.
Regards his picks, I worked on the Razors Edge 1991 show at the NEC in Birmingham where both Angus and Mal actually used their own signature character picks. I saw Angus and Mal drop them whilst playing and I picked them up off the stage after the show..... and they are very well worn. I still have them.
Back in 1978 he had an old walnut SG that he used on the If You Want Blood tour.......I got to have a look at it backstage at the Birmingham Odean..it was absolutely battered, black duct tape all over the back, Badass bridge, his roadie said it was his No#1 and he'd had it from the start. Wonder where that one is now?
Gibson stock SG guitar... Ernie Ball 9-42's strings... Fender extra heavy picks.. got it! Now all I need is Angus' rock n' roll mojo to become legendary.🤘
I assume this guitar tech is with the band because he is similar to them...down to earth, no pretense...takes the job seriously but not himself. AC/DC keeping it simple...no effects, crank it up, play through the clean channel and get the tubes crackling a bit. The secret of their sound is that there is no secret...love it.
Why? So they can charge 10k for a guitar? Come on dude, I’m all for the signature series but normal people aren’t buying 10k guitars. I wanted a billy gibbons les Paul gold top, wasn’t paying 10k bought one for 3k pinstriped it myself and aged it. Saved my self 7k
@@Mrrogerz5150 not upset lol I asked a serious question. Why should they offer it? Take a 2k guitar slap angus young’s name on it, beat it up a bit and charge 10k? Yea you are right they should offer it.
He essentially has t top style pups in that guitar makes sense since he used a lot of 70s sg’s back in the day. I’m no expert but I’d guess a SD jazz bridge pup would be the most similar to those
2:06 - Hmm, strange. I thought (after some online research) he bought his second SG in '78. And that was a 1970 cherry SG. Not a '67 black SG. It's also not one of those first 2 SG's with a re-finish, 'cause the cutaway bevels and pickguards etc still wouldn't match. To me this one looks like his black SG he used live at Donington '91, which apparently is a '63(?). This all doesn't make sense to me. Why would he say he got this one since '77? Can anybody explain?
If that's a 67, that's a highly modified 67. It would mean filling in large guard holes, cutting a larger bevel into the lower horn, and refin just for those things
That was great. These guys are the epitome and synonymous with great rock n’ roll. These albums move me in the exact same way they did when I was first listening to their catalog 40 years ago.
I enjoy these pills from the Rundowns, which are often long. Also Premer Guitar needs to keep churning out videos during the pandemic and this is a great way of reusing older content.
Glad to see this. This abridged interview was uploaded in 2020, and I)m compelled to ask: is Angus even still performing live? If so, would he appear with the AC/DC name without Malcolm?
I believe it was for the last tour. If you think the guitar was interesting, there's a full "rig rundown" addition. The amount of tube amps up and running for a show was staggering. If your a techie guy like me...here's the full nerd additions ruclips.net/video/j5C7GKGxICg/видео.html
At 2:17 tech mentioned tuning at 440, “just like on the records” Years ago I used to pull my hair out trying to play along to the records because the tuning just wasn’t right. Finally, I tried tuning to 430 and BOOM! there it was, spot on with the records. On that note, no pun intended, I’ve also heard that they do play and record in standard 440 tuning, but slow the recording during mixing to get a heavier, thicker sound. Anybody know more about this?
My grandpa had a saying, "Keep it simple, stupid." My step-granny also said something similar about cooking, "Don't make it more complicated than it has to be." I like his setup, simple, basic, functional, no frills rock & roll.
Angus and Iommi got me into SGs. I love them, but I've never owned them, only Guild and Yamaha knockoffs. Fine guitars, but not the real deal. I will be getting an SG tribute soon. I love the things. They play like butter and sound amazing.
They also changed the way the fender extra heavy picks are cut or molded or whatever, so the edges are too round. Feels like they slide over the strings too much when I dig in.
Great to see John Cusack from Being John Malkovich back in as a guitar tech. Hopefully AC/DC will bring some of his puppetry skills to their live shows.

History legends had poured out of those axes as Angus strikes them hard!
The best part:
Guitar guy: "It used to be walnut-colored."
Host: "Wow"
Its good to see Garth found a good gig after Waynes World.
Never been that big of an AC/DC fan, but I respect them and Angus. I would be a liar if I didn’t say that Angus didn’t tempt me at some point to get an SG.
Watching angus live is life changing
I agree, the band just doesn't do it for me, but gotta give them their due for their tone. I prefer Les Paul's over SGs by a long shot, but Angus's SG sound is killer.
My suspicion is that Angus could join any band and totally rock it the same way. Love to know what he plans on doing when live performing comes back. Is he going to come back too, and if so will he consider sticking with the AC DC name without Malcolm?
@@Shred_The_Weapon No change, no doubt.
Go Vandals!! Great to see a t-shirt from my old alma mater! And working for AC/DC no less.
Amazing insight for a legend of my childhood. Thank you
The original pickups from the SG were T-Tops, a5 wound around mid 7k. My guess for the Seymour Duncan equivalent would be to get two neck-position 59's that vary slightly in resistance.
COOLEST! MOST BESTLIEST GUITAR TECH EVER. Super informative, enthusiastic and down to earth. Also great job interviewer!!
Thanks!
Thank you. These are LEGENDARY guitars. I know some day one of these guitars will end up at the Smithsonian Institute.
I hope not, they should stay in Australia when Angus passes.
The 48 dislikes must be from that guy Angus was going to fight who sloshed him with that beer back in 2000... along with 47 of his friends and family
#1 is actually a '64-65 (small 6-screw guard, small neck joint). Love that Angus pulls out the Brian Ray SG from time to time. Very cool.
Makes you wonder what that Back In Black tour guitar is worth!
Just like the Brian May Red Special. I can only imagine the value.
That was like going to the rock and roll hall of fame, omg. Angus all day.
Angus young. Legend. ..xxx
Gibson stock SG guitar... Ernie Ball 9-42's strings... Fender extra heavy picks.. got it! Now all I need is Angus' rock n' roll mojo to become legendary.🤘
You also need a brother like Malcom. Lets not forget that. RIP.
@@roobysoho so true. RIP Mal.
OMG..5:21 the intonation setup on the BiB SG is insane. It's darn near flat except for the low E.
Gibson should make that first black SG a custom shop guitar, like the slash double neck.
@@MAshire3 I think your getting a little too upset about this.
His guitar tech looks like everyone’s cools uncle
I thought hr was Garth I was looking for Wayne. “I’m not worthy “
If that's a 67, that's a highly modified 67. It would mean filling in large guard holes, cutting a larger bevel into the lower horn, and refin just for those things
Fantastic rundown. Perfect questions and this tech knows his stuff.
I can't believe he plays 9s!
@@bigarthansatan2590 really? I play with 10-52 and can easily make a 1.5 step bend, and maybe make a 2 step bend. I use the D'addario strings though
Nothing's better for rock and roll than good old Ernie Ball 9s
@@dnews9519
Plenty of vids reviewing 7s as used by Billy Gibbons. I love 'em and I hit pretty hard 👍😎
@@AdaptivePhenix imagine how good Billy's guitar would sound if he played guitar strings instead of banjo strings.
Rick Beato did an episode on string weight- It was very interesting and dispelled a lot of myths about string guage.
Put an O-Ring and a flat wiper washer on the pot shaft. No more sweat or dust will get into the pots. Military trick
You know if he just wore some arm bands or something I don't know, that and your idea, that would help ,:-0
That was great. These guys are the epitome and synonymous with great rock n’ roll. These albums move me in the exact same way they did when I was first listening to their catalog 40 years ago.
Seen this over 2 years ago.☝️
Iron Eddie thank you! I thought the same but wasnt 100% sure.
Gladly watching again!
I enjoy these pills from the Rundowns, which are often long. Also Premer Guitar needs to keep churning out videos during the pandemic and this is a great way of reusing older content.
Andrea Austoni I hear you friend.... god bless..
Glad to see this. This abridged interview was uploaded in 2020, and I)m compelled to ask: is Angus even still performing live? If so, would he appear with the AC/DC name without Malcolm?
This is what I love about premier they give us geeks the total lowdown....just to see Angus Young’s guitars is so cool.
My favorite episode.
all the right questions were asked. when was this shot tho?
I’ve seen the video before. 7-8 years old, I guess.
I believe it was for the last tour. If you think the guitar was interesting, there's a full "rig rundown" addition. The amount of tube amps up and running for a show was staggering. If your a techie guy like me...here's the full nerd additions

Sorry, I stand corrected!
Thanks for the love (and watching Premier Guitar)!
What a great feature! There should be a "major thumb" option for that revealing, comprehensive and enjoyable presentation.
The old 70's volume knob thing... The best
The Guys being creatures of habit - Phil is the same way and that is why He sounds so much different (and proper) than Slade behind the kit.
They did that only on the Bon Scott era, With Brian Johnson all songs are 440
I got one of those picks from his wife by his house in the Netherlands 4/5 years ago! So sad I cant find it anymore😢

Thanks, always wanted to know a little more about that 70 custom
I miss Angus Young
And AC/DC Concert in 2020
Where is it?
Ask Mr. Covid, I'm sure he can fill you in.
My grandpa had a saying, "Keep it simple, stupid." My step-granny also said something similar about cooking, "Don't make it more complicated than it has to be." I like his setup, simple, basic, functional, no frills rock & roll.
So Wayne's World went on to be a guitar tech for accadacca. nice
At 3:39 we can spot that the cable is Mogami, but which model? Cannot decipher that. Anyone?
This dude seems like a very nice guy!
The SG custom was actually purchased before back in black, Angus can bee seen playing it in 1979 During the let there be rock movie.
My guitar collection is all SGs 😂 i just love that guitar
Gotta love the multiple cannons behind the guitars, lol.
those are gorgeous black fret boards
Great to see John Cusack from Being John Malkovich back in as a guitar tech. Hopefully AC/DC will bring some of his puppetry skills to their live shows.
The black and white guitar was already like that on BIB tour along side a fully stock walnut 3 PU custom were he use both as same shows :)
