Steve Smith/Max Roach Musical Drum Solo - Performed by Richard Pells

This is one of my favourites drum solo's, as performed by Steve Smith in the style of Max Roach. I found it hidden away in the middle of a Vic Firth promotional video some years ago and set about working it out. Steve Smith makes it look like he's literally just wandered up to the kit and started playing around, but trying to get the playful/musical feel he achieves is so difficult...who says drum solo's can't be musical? The sudden fade out is due to the fact my stick went flying!

Very impressed at well you were able memorize and really duplicate what we played!! I've seen the video you are referring to many times and even watched yours back to back with the original and it seems note for note. Very nice!

Well, look what I found on the toobe! Hiya Rich. Many regards from Dave Danielli from all those years ago. '96 I think. Thanks for all the good input. Many happy times with the bands from your teaching mate. Been so good to get a real angle on the drums for my bass playing duties too. So good to really break it down with the drummer and talk the same language. Great to see the vids after all this time. Hope the fridge is still working? Take care mate and keep on rockin'!
