@@SevanStick it will. The problem is: you won't find the time. The great drummers, Jojo Mayer, Steve Smith and so on, they practiced for ten years very continuosly to get on this level, let's say about 5 hours. Jojo even told once that he practiced the last time in the late 90s.
One of the most underrated drummers out there. When people think of the greats, unless they really know they're drumming (or are a Journey fan) they rarely mention Steve, but quite frankly, he's up there with the Bonhams and the Pearts and the Moons.
John Riley's a master as well, regardless if he's not as popular as Steve Smith, but the way he's just fixed on Steve and his drumming shows Steve's greatness.
Steve Smith is the man! Saw him in a clinic back in the day. What's so cool to me is that all his ability is from hard work and practice. He said that he has no natural talent on the drums.
I have that DVD got it about a year and a half ago. Parents dragged me to a show and I didn't know who was playing so I was a bit hesitant. Turns out it was Steve Smith with his jazz trio and a crowd of 100 people that were close friends at a jazz venue a friend of ours owned. Best concert I have ever been to.
Man, this guy makes me feel like drums are not a competition and just a fun thing to do. Because it's really not a competition. EVERYONE can play and have fun and not worry about who's better
Steve Smith, Vinnie Colauita both Berklee guys....show me better. Steve smith is without a doubt one of the most talented drummers in the world, he is in the same group as far as talent and ability is concerned, as Vinnie Colauita.
Steve Smith - A gentleman. Met him while he was living in Tulsa, Oklahoma playing in his own Jazz/Rock fusion group. He was walking onto the stage a Cain's Ballroom and took the time to stop, do the meet and greet. We talked shop for a minute or two. He is a class act.
Holy shit! Am I the only drummer who starts cursing at drummers like Steve Smith, Dave Weckl, Vinnie Colaiuta, and others whenever they just kill it?! It sounds ridiculous I know, but I'll start calling them all kinds of names. It's a compliment of the highest order. If I'm not yelling at you or making involuntary sounds then you're not really doing anything for me. haha...
Of course I wouldn't do it if I were in the same room with them. Only when I'm watching videos. I guarantee there are some other guys or girls who, involuntarily, call the drummer an S.O.B. or something like that, whenever he/she plays some jaw-dropping fill. Anyway, like I said it's a compliment. I guess I'm just showing my jealousy.
And the sound of that 16" floor drum? Booming. A life dedicated to drumming. This is the way to achieve excellence. Steve is a Master and a Teacher. How much talent in one person. Steve, que clase de baterista eres! Un Maestro en todos los sentidos de la palabra. Gracias por dedicar tu vida a este increible instrumento e inspirar a tantas generaciones. JSM
Every so often I go through a phase during which I just don't listen to anything with Steve Smith on it. Then suddenly I come upon a clip like this and think, "Oh yeah, that's right... He's STILL one of my favorites, and THAT'S why!" Really the drummer's drummer. FYI - For anyone who didn't know, that's John Riley sitting in front of Steve in that clip. Another fantastic drummer/educator.
Out of all the drummers i love and all the old greats i still would love to take on S.S's drumming technique and musical ideas/ phrasing for an hour or so. Everytime i watch this guy play i just sit while my jaw drops. John Riley also a legend created my fav bop book. I want that ride!
Wynton Marsalis's father told Wynton, "if you practice 1 hour a day then you will be just like everyone else who practices 1 hour a day. If you want to be great then you have to practice 5 hours each day! " Steve Smith has talent and incredible discipline to do what he can do. He is brilliant!
This guy has opened my eyes to such intricate drumming and the creativity of patterns such as these. Now I'm a follower of Indian music as well in terms of rhythmic instruction. Thanks Steve!
years ago a friend of mine had an instructional vid from this guy. i watched it about a hundred times and i don't even play the drums. he is truly a special musician, and i don't mean short bus special either.
I've been using Steve Smith signature series sticks for playing drums w/out knowing who he is. Damn I never knew the Journey drummer could tear it up like this! god damn!
Ok, jesus! that thing with his right hand on the snare holding a single hand Buzz Roll @ :53 is just ridiculous. criminy, this guy! Lol! i've been listening to him since his days right after Joining Journey, and even saw him with montrose once in Redding, CA at the Civic Auditorium circa 1978 or so..... and he's always been one of my most fav's, ever. but OMG! he is simply one of the "FEW" ....and i mean LITERALLY, a handful of dudes in the entire world this good! just unreal!
I swear by coated heads... the way these drums sound makes me rethink that. What an amazing drummer! So good that some drum peon like me saying he's great just sounds stupid.
every drummer needs to see this solo, this is true musicianship, talent, technique, limb independence, and creativity, damn !!!
What people don't realize is that its really easy what he played. Just remember to practice 5 hours a day for 20 years. You are good to go.
shut up lol
Not even funny
I think 5 hours for 20 years wan‘t do it. Seriously.

He ain’t peart good, but still amazing
@@IvoTheGhoulwhat… steve smith clears all three you mentioned…
What?! Not true! I think he's one of the better ones. And I'm only a drummer and journey fan so i...oh wait...um yeah, good point 😂
I just watched it 13 times in a row and I still dont know how the hell that is even humanly possible
Superb drumming, no surprise.
And the sound of kit is unbelievable!
Omg. That 16" floor tom sound. Perfect tuning all around.
My jaw drops every time I listen to this solo
Steve Smith=One of the greatest drummers of all times.....period
This is the most amazing dru msolo I've ever heard.
The thing that amazes me about this is his tempo...I got the distinct impression it didn't budge.
John Riley's a master as well, regardless if he's not as popular as Steve Smith, but the way he's just fixed on Steve and his drumming shows Steve's greatness.

i love how john riley is sitting there like a boss. Id be mind blown :D
I want to drum! What a monster. So much maturitiy in his touch!
I could listen to Steve all day. I would quit my job right now, and just take lessons from him all day every day for a year.
You never see enough of this kind of stuff being played at weddings these days...
Play this solo through your surround sound system and turn up the subwoofer. This is quality recording. Great job (as usual) Hudson Music!
Didn't know Rob Halford was a drummer as well :).
it's good.
nice and simple, which is what a lot of drummers forget is needed most of the time.
That is the best sounding ride I've ever heard.
rotfl look at John Riley, wonder what he is thinking with a look like that :D
Ben Kingsley plays drums?!
that has got to be one of the best sounding sonor kit's I think Ive ever heard.

OMFG........ That Moller Stroke 5.......left hand.........
"After failing in his struggle against Michael Myers, Dr. Loomis took up drumming."
Best technique in the history of drumming

Aw c'mon man... for fuck's sake.
How could anyone say this guy isn't in the top five?
Top five in the world? Steve is a fantastic drummer, no question, but I think even he would admit he's not top five these days.
Steve Smith, Vinnie Colauita both Berklee guys....show me better. Steve smith is without a doubt one of the most talented drummers in the world, he is in the same group as far as talent and ability is concerned, as Vinnie Colauita.

You and me both, friend, you and me both.
That is one long polo shirt
One of the best without a doubt!
PAURA!!! grandissimo Steve! Soooo amazing!!!
Why is Jeffrey Dahmer sitting in the background watching Steve play the drums?
That is John riley. Jazz drummer. And columnist for modern drummer. He has a drum book out also.
No it's Dahmer, after this was filmed he tried to replicate the drum solo but murdered it...
***** ... and had sex with it's corpse. Then he dismembered it and ate some of the dead paradiddle's... with some lava beans and a nice Chianti.
Who is this guy stalking Steve Smith, very creepy. Reminded me of that kid behind the curtain in "Three Men and a Baby".
naccibobacci John Riley
It was all in a quintuplet feel. That's amazing.
you know what, that was outstanding. thats just a lifetimes work to be playing something like that with such control. amazing
the dude watching him is friggin creepy...lol!
Robert Mirabella dude that‘s John Riley!

You think your a fairly decent drummer until you here these guys, awesome - that second floor tom is just incredible!!!!
first pro drummer i've seen with no bass drum dampening, such a good feel x
This has to be one of my favorite solos of all time! Dynamic, melodic, powerful, it has it all, in just 2 minutes! Absolutely flawless.
Outstanding! And second to none!
his double pedal inclusion is so awesome, its not all blast beats, thats what i love about this guy, he uses double pedal creatively
Best drummer on the planet, bar none!
This man is a drum beast. Nobody needs to be our favorite artist for us to admit his / her talent.
Agreed! After all these years Steve still is as inventive as ever....INSPIRING.
That 5 ostinato he has going on his left hand is awesome!!! Crazy independence AND endurance
That was one of the best intros of a solo I have ever heard
Are you kidding me with that floor tom..Sounds incredible!
This is probably one of the most amazing drummers I have ever seen.
It's amazing what some people can do... I can't wrap my mind around coming up with all that, AND THEN playing it. Unreal.
Every so often I go through a phase during which I just don't listen to anything with Steve Smith on it. Then suddenly I come upon a clip like this and think, "Oh yeah, that's right... He's STILL one of my favorites, and THAT'S why!" Really the drummer's drummer.

This probably one of the most tasteful, and melodic drum solos ever.
One of the best sounding kits ever. That floor tom is wicked.
you sir steve smith are beyond incredible!!!!!!!!
That last floor tom. Godly!
Those blast beats on the snare are amazing.
The best drum soloist.

Thanks Steve!
I still can't play this piece. Fuck.
Its awesome to see one of the greats; and inspiration to so many being influenced by current drum culture. Steve Smith is a champ.
Doing a drum role with one hand! what the hell! that solo is mad!

His sounds are so relaxing, a true ASMR
Just sick Steve!! Just gets better with age!!!!
Steve Smith is a master drummer! And that guy sitting there watching. He's good too.

Great tone, flawless technique, and engaging phrasing; Steve Smith really does have it all.

It's been a long time since I've last seen such a good solo.
I love you steve... i love you so much...
what a master piece!!!! thumbs up!!
i loved everything he did on the drums, i loved everything he did on the cymbals, but i didn't at all like when he combined them.
great stuff steve.

after over 30 years he has still got it!!
