I was given "Getting It Together" in 1998 when I was 17. I read it and re-read it a number of times. About 5 years later I also emailed Noel for some advice, and he was so very kind in the effort he went to in order to help me with some career advice. Almost 25 years later since I first came across Noel, I can only confirm how Noel's advice stands the test of time and is so very sound to follow (even if being human I haven't always followed it to a t!). Thank you again Noel.

Hi Noel & James, I just loved the interview. I loved the way you interact with and respect each other. As a young 72 Y/o, I get what Noel says about desire. It reminds me of the old quote, you can't put an old head on young shoulders, or you can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink. Desire is the engine that drives you. I will finish with a quote of my own, "If you are easy on yourself life will be hard on you but if you are hard on yourself life will be easy on you". Seize the day and go forth, you pair of champions.

@@JamesWhittaker1 Ditto to you as well James. I find it a pity that the people who do not put in the effort to live a full and productive life do not realize that the satisfaction and enjoyment you receive are far greater than the effort put forth to obtain such. Have a Fantastic day.

Hi James I remember you telling my in a reply to a previous rant of mine that your were going to interview Dad. I was checking and sorting email and there was your news letter and the link to this podcast so I clicked and wella .You were indeed fortunate to have Noel as your Dad but IF you hadn't listened and followed a few steps then you would not be where you are today.Different style but hey! you are the young buck and digital has changed the world. Whittaker Mc Naught was my first step into the financial planning arena and eventually I changed after the sale as the new young buck who took me over generated too much paper work for me. Now all that said I still buy my Sunday mail and read Noel's column, and yes these days another couple of fellas are trying to take his place. They write more words and dominate more ,BUT the old fellas is still there and is always ahead of the pack. Okay enough ,and I did buy Noels pack on the Downsizing Made Simple and the Retirement made Simple even before they hit the shelves.
Now I am planning for that downhill run and those words of advise definitely are making the run a little easier . Magic Interview and enjoy the old fellas as long as you can . 10/10 ..

Been looking forward to this one James! I truly miss working for Noel, he’s one of the most genuine and funny people you could hope yo meet, let alone work within his sphere.
Its taken me a while to absorb the advice and influence someone like Noel imparts, but im finally on a track to making something for myself and yourself and Noel are a continuing part of that 💪💪

I disagree at the 52 minute mark. Many don't have confidence to do better. They don't know how to get started. They might not have had someone influential in their life to let them know they can do better. You can change attitude. Many people go off the rails at some stage in their life and do climb back and change their attitude.
My Dad was a farmer who would find young guys who dropped out of school. He would take them out to the farm, give them a roof over their heads and teach them welding, budgeting, tractor driving, get them a car licence, teach them sheepwork etc etc and send them back out into the world. So many talk about him as the most influential person in their lives. He got cheaper labour and the guys learnt life skills they just couldn't find anywhere else. He encouraged them to go to TAFE. Often they came out of school thinking they were not smart enough for school. He used to joke that just as they started paying their way, it was time for them to leave, get an education and make real money.

Thank you for sharing Gerardine! What a wonderful story about your Dad. It sounds like the biggest thing he gave all the teenagers you mentioned was self-worth. When people have self-worth, and begin to acquire skills that make them valuable in the marketplace (and on the path to financial independence), the sky is the limit. Thanks again for watching and taking the time to comment.
