How Advertisers Convinced Us We Need Deodorant - Cheddar Explains

  • Body odor is natural, but it’s not exactly welcome… Thankfully, we have all kinds of deodorants and antiperspirants to help eliminate the stink. But believe it or not, there was a time when people weren’t so ready to accept these solutions. In fact, it took a pretty savage marketing campaign to convince us we had a problem at all.

    Antiperspirants are definitely necessary for some people. I'm one of them, my armpits sweat _really_ bad, even when I'm not hot. (And it's truly awful when I'm hot, even with antiperspirant.) In my case it's probably a genetic thing that happened to impact my armpits mostly. I have a cousin whose hands sweat constantly in the same way, leading her hands to feel cold and clammy to others.
    If I don't use antiperspirant, I'm physically uncomfortable even if the sweating isn't bad enough for others to notice. Odor isn't the issue in my case.

      @Joseph Ruddleston The bit about how back in the olden days they very rarely bathed and obviously didn’t use deodorant, and how it didn’t bother them because it was the norm. Soaps
      Soaps are potassium or sodium salts of a carboxylic acid having a long aliphatic chain attached to it.
      They are surfactants (compounds that reduce the surface tension between a liquid and another substance) and therefore help in the emulsification of oils in water.
      Soaps are generally prepared via the saponification of fats and oils.
      The carboxylate end of the soap molecule is hydrophilic whereas the hydrocarbon tail is hydrophobic.
      Detergents
      Detergents are the potassium or sodium salts of a long alkyl chain ending with a sulfonate group.
      They are soluble in hard water.
      This solubility is attributed to the fact that the sulfonate group does not attach itself to the ions present in hard water.
      Commonly, anionic detergents such as alkyl benzene sulfonates are used for domestic purposes.

      Usually the PH level is a huge difference between soap and shampoo. Shampoo usually also has more moisturizing ingredients versus soap which generally is way more drying.

    • @arghjayem
      @arghjayem 2 года назад

      The difference between soap and shampoo apart from the obvious- that you can take a bar of soap in your hand luggage on a plane that will last for months whereas you get stopped by TSA if you have more than one of those tiny “travel sized” bottle of shampoo that barely lasts two days?
      Big chemical differences obviously but how much that affects you depends on your and your body. I stopped using shampoo and shower gel years ago. I just use coal tar soap, that’s it. I don’t use deodorant either nor aftershave.

    • @artchick07
      @artchick07 2 года назад +1

      Technically, pH and electron charge. Shampoo includes more positively charged ingredients so it can remove buildup without stripping your hair and scalp. Well good shampoo that's in the proper pH range. Hair products usually need to be between a pH of 4.5 and 5.5 at a Max or the cuticle can become damaged. Body products really should be at a pH of 5 to 5.5 due to the acidic nature of the acid mantle of your skin. Using something as high as like a 5.8 could damage your skin barrier and lead to skin infections and dryness.

    Deodorants. A need for the modern age. Where you work inside closer to other people. Many older farmers even today do not use deodorant. Because even if they sweat they are outdoors working and at the end of the day they will shower and eliminate body odors. Hygiene in the modern age is EXTREMELY important. I have worked in offices with people that look decent but would refuse to use soap and deodorant. And I have worked with the exact opposite. Where the cologne wand perfume was SO strong it made people puke.
    Many offices ban the use of cologne and perfume and even fragrant lotions.
    Just take a shower people and scrub with soap every day.

Of course there is the marketing ploy of "trust a doctor," however she created her product in response to her patients' questions and concerns about odor and as she says because she saw how antibiotics were being over prescribed to treat the problem. Yes, I get tired of the commercials popping up all of the time (as with other advertising), but her product is made from a mild acid derived from almonds that eliminates odor causing bacteria from the skin. It is not a deodorant but as just stated it helps eliminate the cause of odor. I have bought the soap and deodorant (pre-odorant) and find that they work pretty effectively.

    I think people are falling for some real heavy confirmation bias.
    You will, if only on a visceral level, absolutely remember a person who stinks, but you also have absolutely no idea how many people around you dont use much if any deodorant.
    From what I can gather*: Even without a genetic advantage, if you have a decent diet and shower regularly you will almost always smell fine. Irregular showers, and/or being particularly hot and sweaty for extended periods without a wash, and you may need a spritz.
    *From being around friends who are pretty honest about these things.

      I have a decent diet and shower very regularly, but if I don't put on deodorant immediately after showering, my pits will start to smell like rancid garlic and onions within barely an hour. An overpowering, acrid scent that's impossible to ignore. In fact, even *with* deodorant, I can barely go 8-9 hours before the smell breaks through.
