What impressed me the most about this car was not just the speed but how composed the driver was and how much confidence the car gives the driver! Hardly any over corrections the handling was so awe inspiring. Nissan has a winner!
WOW... I'm impressed with your knowledge... Really...you must teach me everything you know about lap times, racing, basket weaving, etc... Because I'm truly fascinated by your credentials as the highest authority on all things automotive...and life in general...
What a remarkable piece of machinery/technology. For those of you who simply like to "diss" cars because they perform well is ludicrous. What that does exactly is push the competition to improve upon their own design and come up with an improved automobile for YOU to drive. You should praise Nissan for their achievement. AND just for the record im a honda lover and still happy to see this happen
the only transmission on offer is a dual clutch, dual input shaft unit. There is no toque converter, nor any planetary gearset, but the clutching is accomplished by computer and it does indeed have an automatic operating mode, as well as manually commanded shifts.
On Nurburgring there are lots of long straights and high speed bends which let you use all the power of the car. Weight affects acceleration/deceleration and handling. It is a big factor.
BMW CCA has an annual week long driving school there with a flight, hotel, rental car package I believe it's only $1500 or so leaving from NY or such. It's in August/Sept timeframe. You learn the course in chunks with instructors then string it together. Make your dream come true.
actually the small displacement Honda 4's can be driven really hard and never fail once, they are designed to take those high revs, same goes for BMW and other manafacturers
This was done with a fully stock GT-R. Imagine what a modded one would do! Bigger turbos, injectors, lightweight racing rims with stickier tires. This car is a beast. Pure and simple.
As far as I know, Evo-Spec GT-R will have 2 seats and weight reduction as well as a boost in power from the engine (probably this car). Cam and equip -might- have slowed it down, but it still did an impressive time.
Yeah you can definitely start way later. I am obsessed with racing/driving and didn't really get started until I got my first Jeep at 16 (minus the go-kart races and bumper cars, etc when I was younger). Learning to handle a car doesn't take long if you have a natural feel for it like I do. What I will admit takes the longest (years and years of practice) is learning to choose good (well, the best) lines, andTHAT is whatyou learn overthose years starting from 6.Nodoubt someone canlearn later tho
Lets just take it for what it is, a preproduction laptime for the gtr. When independent testing confirms it in production trim pp will stop doubting. Given the specs (473hp/3800lbs) skeptism is bound to happen. Maybe the power is underrated, or the AWD is really that good. We currently don't know yet. & they aren't lying, it's just the time was achieved on a preproduction model.
In fact...that dually pulls my 40' 5th wheel toy hauler. And now that I think about it, this car is so small and cute, I think it would fit in the back of it.
I was talking to someone else and they mentioned that much of these times are based upon what is known as the "20.6" track length which is not the full track and excludes the very short segment that you see is not timed in the video.
I respect both the Corvette and the GT-R. I love both cars, both are an amazing work of engineering. The thing that sticks out the most for me is that the Corvette is about 450 pounds lighter and has about 160 more HP and about 175 more lbs-ft Torque, and yet it is only 12 seconds quicker. My two cents.
Stillen gets 610 hp out of the Nissan engine so you can extract more power from it, vs the 475 to 504 it has standard, but its a monster car just off the esembly line! I love that they made the skyline a killer from factory spec...
I don't know why it matters what country anyone is from, but I'm also American. This car is my dream car. I would take this over a vette anyday of the week, and even a 911. This car is a work of art.
Regarding missing out the start/finish straight those of you that have been to the Ring will know it's not possible to time a full lap and therefore from the "Bridge to Gantry" is the recognized time standard that everyone adheres to. The times for the other cars mentioned are all for the same section of track covered so the comparison is absolutely valid. Personally I think there's no doubt the car is an absolute weapon and my deposit is going down on one tomorrow!
Hey mate, im glad someone sees where im coming from. Some guy named Al1500321 was clearly comparing the radical to the GT-R and i felt i should educate him on the fact that they cant be compared.
SuperCJ - Mine was a list conjured in the spur of the moment. You're list looks A-OK to me. Hell...I'm a married man with two young kids. Exciting these days is a drive in an Accord. I'm just wondering what best-time I could achieve on the Nurburgring in my Prius?!
All cars being timed at the ring are timed in exactly the same way. They all start and end the runs at the same spots so it's all legit and fair and equal.
i was commenting on diefordie's comment on his turboed Si that "handls better" the funny thing is a GT-R can be FWD in a way, if the rear wheels loose all traction, all the power is diverted to the front wheels. sorry for the confusion, obviously any stock car breaking 8 min at nurburgring has exceptional handling.
On Top Gear they said that the Corvette Z06 goes around the Nurburgring at 7:43 seconds;therefore the Nissan Skyline is faster than Z06..wow! that is just amazing Japanese engineering for you.
Dude, when I see any sort of vette the first thing that comes to my mind is that whole mid crisis life stigma the car carries along with it. The coming of the GTR is something that should be celebrated by all car enthusiasts. It is a bitch slap to all those manufactures making cars for the so called "elite" in the car world. This car has so many new technological features never seen before that it will revolutionize the way new high performance cars are built. Happy New Year!
No matter what this is a great performance price for the money. It's able to hang with a Porsche that costs twice as much. I have never been a fan of Japanese cars but I give credit to this one.
@mrmichaelmw Im pretty sure when porsche test their new car the team do some tweaking as well to achieve the best performance since the Nur lap times are known to be an official test ranking arena for competitors to duel their developments out.
And just one more thing...you'd be amazed at the sounds that you can get out of a cheap guitar that you cannot get out of an expensive one... Cheaper, lighter, and less dense wood can give you a very bright resonant sound that you can't achieve with a heavier guitar... Remember guitars, just like cars...are 10% equipment, 90% user. Doesn't matter what it CAN do, if you can't make it do it anyway.
Yeah, Omni was right.. they didn't stop the timer same place as they started it. I think that's what Nizmo was talking about too, but I don't know the track in meters, heh. It seemed like the driver made a ton of mistakes, so I'm certain that a 7:38 is still well within the GT-R's means. Looks like a force to be reckoned with... unless you're in the new Porsche GT2 (7:32 according to Porsche). There's a series of clips of the GT2 running Nordschleife as well on RUclips, interesting view!
The car is out December 6th I'm pretty sure mzoomora. Only difference between this and production is it had racing seats instead of the normal seats and had all the testing and camera equipment inside.
rumor has it (and pistonheads confirms it) that this particular run was done on cut slicks and not the stock tires. I'm not sure so I'm just going to wait until the stock production GT-R does a lap (not a concept or prototype).
Don't bother my friend, some people still think a paper stats with power to weight ratio will determine the speed and final outcome. They are hoppless, stability and suspension systems play even bigger role. THIS is why this new GTR is so good, and even 911 Turbo with same amount of hp and more weight is whole 15s faster than F430. When they (IF they) manage to drive something fast they'll see that power and speed isn't the whole story.
Also, for the record, I'm actually a classically trained musician. I have met Eric Johnson on several occassions in Austin and have listened Eric Johnson over the past 20 years. I do a pretty good cover of Manhattan and Cliffs of Dover... I loved how you assumed that I'll never be as good as Johnson or Vai.... There are actually many better players in the world, that'll you'll never know of
The Bugatti Veyron has a twin-clutch sequential manual, which is precisely what the GT-R will have, except that the Veyron's is a seven speed to the GT-R's six. I imagine some of the others have them as well, but I don't happen to know them off-hand.
Nissan did release an image of the actual tires used for the test plus a second video of the lap as proof that its 7m 29s lap time is legitimate. Nissan has also revealed that the GT-R used in the official lap time was actually at a disadvantage due to up to 50kg of testing equipment. Honestly, it was fair all the way through its just that Porsche's drivers didn't do that well and they were even offered lessons on how to drive the GTR. The vette's time was a hoak in a way but not the GTR's.
there is no "standing start at nurburgring, even for a first lap there is like a quarter mile before the time starts from when people enter the track. At least if im not mistaken.
i think thats because thats the starting grid i think it has something to do with stoping as well if you go as fast as u can into that turn to make you best time is kinda better than going as fast as u can on the small straight and then hitting a turn
Kazutoshi Mizuno (GTR Chief Engineer) himself said that on the 7:38 they used "cut slicks" for tires, not production OEM tires like the Z06. There's a world of difference between race compound tires and standard road tires. I'm not here to bash the GTR, is a great car, the real quality of this car lies in it's active handling AWD, not it's engine.. but still, it wasn't a production trim car that ran the 7:38
im pretty sure by the end of 2009, there will be 1000hp R35's. Mine's has tuned this car already and if i'm not mistaken, Mine's squeezed 600hp+ on it.
I don't see why people brag about the ZR1. Not only is it 16 degrees C, it's a partial wet track. Also, the ZR1 has a 630hp engine while the GT-R only has 480.
The GT-R did it on a partialy wet track! I'm not saying it would be better then the CLS but still doing a good lap. Lets wait for a street legally tuned GT-R :)
Yes I get your point. But the LEXUS was a prototype TEST MULE. Not a full bore ready to take on the best of the best race car. Obviously it's needs to get the bugs worked out of it. When the full race version is on the track (not a prototype or test mule) we shall see what happens.
What was the top speed reached on the long straight away starting at 8:00? I can't make out the speedo read-out past the glare, but I think it was +260 kph? What I wouldn't give to have a week of practice on the Nurburgring, and then my pick of, say, 10 of the top cars in the world to play with: Veyron, GT-R, McLaren, a half dozen choices of modded jobs: Viper, ZR1, F-1, etc.
i love Skylines,(Rx7 as a favorite) adn you actually have a good point with the Z06..its a insanly fast car,not as sophisticated as a G-tr handlingwhise, but eitherway it could prolly match a Gt-r on the track...and like these others and myself..discussing whats best is pointless, cause everyone will stand on theyre own:p
as a matter of fact, i have... its a masterpeice, and i would rather drive that thing around the whole world than any of its competetors. If japans good at anything, its the complete package and making their cars practical.
That's the question at hand Andreas. This is a prototype. It could easily be 500hp and Nissan could be using this video to generate a buzz. No one would know. If it is stock then I can't even imagine what kind of numbers the evo model will do.
It was rumored that the engine of the car is "untunable", saying that the CPU of the engine is very well encrypted and it would take some time before tuners can crack it. But heck, I'm not going to underestimate the likes of Nagata, Niikura, Tanabe, and Kobayashi! They'll crack its cpu's wide open, and then... BOOM!
c6 z06 has been out for three years. i'll see if the c6 z06 came out this year. but the zr1 is about to bring the pain. after the zr1 there will be a c7 that will have 700+hp in or around 2010.
@jmauyou Actually, they finish 160-200 metres short for safety reasons... Going flat out towards the first turn to finish the entire lap is a dangerous maneuver.
the thing with gtr is that its an icon honestly I dont like R35 a lot, but I could kill for R34 V-SpecII Nur, and even if Porsche Mercedes Audi are better I will choose R34:) Anyway this time is very impressive, and I don't think that Nissan guys would cheat on that. all best Kurt
Still not sure what you're getting at here. The Skyline, Evo and Impreza, NSX et al, all have legendary handling - which you can't achieve without a good chassis. Also, most of them hover ~300-400bhp (apart from the new GTR). In today's terms, that's not an enormous amount of horsepower (the Zonda F, which holds the Ring record, puts down over 600bhp). And before you start banging on about 1000bhp+ Skylines, remember we're talking about factory spec...not modified motors.
Polyphony Digital designed the in-car computer interface. Polyphony is the developer behind the world famous Gran Turismo franchise only available on Playstation Platforms.
i think we can expect 7:30 time on Evo versions that have an extra power (520hp if I recall correctly), just with tires it is difficult, unless tester are one hell of a driver... But I'll agree with you, after seing that run, i say another 5-6s can be cut...
@AllYourBase420 Yep, I know what ricer means and the GT-R fits the title pretty well. If the GTR is so fast, why is it that the ZR1 beats it so badly....geesh. The ZR1 ran the times "bone stock". I have driven 20 or so laps at Nurburgring, at least 10 at Hockenheim, Francia Corte in Italy 10 at Laguna Seca, Darlington 5 laps, and tons of autocross runs. I was the runner up winner at the Holley LS Fest two years in a row. Autobahn at 185 mph. And where have you driven, Ricer?
Just wait and see what happens in Japan - Smoky Nagata probably turns up with one of these great cars with an RB26 init and 1000, just to show how far he can go! ;-) And what's so much of a problem if they make the car not available with a manual? I don't see how you can "out-clutch" the way the car shifts at the mo, like REALLY quick! This new GTR "shifts expectations" like they say at Nissan. Dirk Schoysman drove the R32 back in the days(1989) to 8 minutes 28 seconds.
The thing is a European or American supercar company can charge $300,000 for a car of similar speed to a $70,000 Japanese one and still sell. No one would buy a $300,000 Nissan. The name and refinement in the others is makes it worth that much.
Well, you look at all the top drivers out there and see that they all began from karting at a very very early age... people like F1 drivers for example... Nowadays guys who started from karting at 6 manage to become F1 racers at 20, so that's 14 years of learning before becoming a professional, not to mention they all have the talent, which most people simply don't... If a mad has a natural talent (very rare)and he would start racing at 20 it would take him over 15 years to get to perfection...
I never said the ZO6 handles better than the GTR. That would be crazy talk for sure. As for the styling, I like the GTR, but I guess I am partial to the Corvette a little more in that category. Both great cars though.
It probably is the same for all cars... But they didn't start and stop the timing in the same place... The cameras (that we see in the beginning) are a little bit further ahead... It would take like 2 more seconds to get there.. not a big deal... But odd all the same...
Very nice, but the 7:38 time was only to the beginning of the start finish straight. If the finish time is taken at the same place they started timing from you needs to add an additional 7 seconds. Still very fast, and I still want one.
Also...I hope all of you are doing well enough in life to own a car like this. If ya do have the priveledge to own a beast of a car, or truck in my case, don't be racing it on the streets...take it to the track... I hear through the youtube grapevine that Nurburgring is a really nice one... Keep the rubber side down, and stay safe. Peace
Because I'm truly fascinated by your credentials as the highest authority on all things automotive...and life in general...
thanks, one thing im really waiting for is for top gear to run a test on the new GTR, they are very good showing all aspects of a car.
This is actually the lap MOST manufacturers and magazines use to measure. The Z06 I believe was an exception, it ran a full lap.
@Faktas It may push in, as plastic does, but this makes it very difficult to dent. And it's very very lightweight.
It's a Motec Data Logger. You attach it to the ECU and you can record all the goings-on inside the engine for future reference.
The LEGEND is HERE.
This was done with a fully stock GT-R. Imagine what a modded one would do! Bigger turbos, injectors, lightweight racing rims with stickier tires. This car is a beast. Pure and simple.

It was with their best driver xD
R35 is still in the chassis code for the new GT-R. Just think of it as a break from model-specific numbering. Sort of like the Celica-Supra split.
Japan has yet to make a 200 mph production car. America and Europe both have several 250 mph cars.
there is no "standing start at nurburgring, even for a first lap there is like a quarter mile before the time starts from when people enter the track. At least if im not mistaken.
Timing around nordscliefe circuit is done in the same way by german auto publications as its done with this GTR.
The GT-R has more capabilities than one would think.
Not a sports car, sports cars are two seaters, normally reared mounted and built for track, then made for road. This is a wonderful TOY!!!!!
i think thats because thats the starting grid i think it has something to do with stoping as well if you go as fast as u can into that turn to make you best time is kinda better than going as fast as u can on the small straight and then hitting a turn

I never said it was a bad car, it's fantastic, but like in all things in life, there's always something better.

no, it's got a manual mode too. u can switch gears with the paddle shifter thingys.

Well developed car. The transmission is excellent. I wish the z06 come out with something similar, then maybe it becomes a real supercar.
Looks like the Top Gear website has a blog entry linked to this video! :)
The GT-R did it on a partialy wet track! I'm not saying it would be better then the CLS but still doing a good lap. Lets wait for a street legally tuned GT-R :)
Don't you just love the GT-R!
LOL, good points, but I'd say a better test would be the Z06 and the GTR. Sport Auto got a 7:55 out of the Z06 as well on the same track.
The Track Spec Version they have promised should be at least 10 seconds faster; can't wait!
Awesome vid!
I'm wondering whether the GT-R's engine will be as flexible and mod friendly as the R-34's which was quite a reference in itself.
Yes I get your point. But the LEXUS was a prototype TEST MULE. Not a full bore ready to take on the best of the best race car. Obviously it's needs to get the bugs worked out of it. When the full race version is on the track (not a prototype or test mule) we shall see what happens.
That was a J-sped gtr, the US Spec one did it at 7:29 cuz they changed the mounts, diff an some other stuff.

the Radical SR8 is pretty much purpose built for racing...a v8 that revs at 10.5..
Can you even take that thing over a speed bump?
i love Skylines,(Rx7 as a favorite) adn you actually have a good point with the Z06..its a insanly fast car,not as sophisticated as a G-tr handlingwhise, but eitherway it could prolly match a Gt-r on the track...and like these others and myself..discussing whats best is pointless, cause everyone will stand on theyre own:p
Very good post.....well reasoned and intelligent. Nice job sir. :)
as a matter of fact, i have... its a masterpeice, and i would rather drive that thing around the whole world than any of its competetors.
Going flat out towards the first turn to finish the entire lap is a dangerous maneuver.
the thing with gtr is that its an icon honestly I dont like R35 a lot, but I could kill for R34 V-SpecII Nur, and even if Porsche Mercedes Audi are better I will choose R34:)
Anyway this time is very impressive, and I don't think that Nissan guys would cheat on that.
all best Kurt
Still not sure what you're getting at here. The Skyline, Evo and Impreza, NSX et al, all have legendary handling - which you can't achieve without a good chassis. Also, most of them hover ~300-400bhp (apart from the new GTR). In today's terms, that's not an enormous amount of horsepower (the Zonda F, which holds the Ring record, puts down over 600bhp).
And before you start banging on about 1000bhp+ Skylines, remember we're talking about factory spec...not modified motors.
That gave me a thrill like no other!
Excellent time for a production car.
It was the first thing that came to mind...Do you have a better example?
Polyphony Digital designed the in-car computer interface.
Polyphony is the developer behind the world famous Gran Turismo franchise only available on Playstation Platforms.
What are the differences? They are both all wheel drive, have traction control, and the Porsche probably has a better/faster transmission.
i think we can expect 7:30 time on Evo versions that have an extra power (520hp if I recall correctly), just with tires it is difficult, unless tester are one hell of a driver...
In Italy its cost is between 65000 to 92000 E!
Less than a Ferrary F430 and a GranTurismo!
I'll guess we'll find out when they are officially on the market. . . . . .
Just wait and see what happens in Japan - Smoky Nagata probably turns up with one of these great cars with an RB26 init and 1000, just to show how far he can go! ;-)
And what's so much of a problem if they make the car not available with a manual? I don't see how you can "out-clutch" the way the car shifts at the mo, like REALLY quick! This new GTR "shifts expectations" like they say at Nissan. Dirk Schoysman drove the R32 back in the days(1989) to 8 minutes 28 seconds.
inportant point is that 7:38 is a first trial time, not a best time
the potential is more high..........
The thing is a European or American supercar company can charge $300,000 for a car of similar speed to a $70,000 Japanese one and still sell. No one would buy a $300,000 Nissan. The name and refinement in the others is makes it worth that much.
You can hear all the competitors shaking in there boots...GODZILLA IS BACK!!!
Sick track! I would die and go to heaven if i could drive on it.

If a mad has a natural talent (very rare)and he would start racing at 20 it would take him over 15 years to get to perfection...
i agree wholeheartedly i know that i can drive but would be lucky in anycar to post a 8 min run
i dont know why, but all nurburgring time attacks always has that little part of the little straight missing...its weird
Peace
