How To Make A New Spare Tire Cover Trunk Board

  • The board that goes into a car's trunk to cover the spare tire is usually made of the flimsiest wood. It's a like a pressboard/cardboard material. I have had them warp and even break if I tried to carry something even remotely heavy. I mean putting a bag of dog food in the trunk is not unreasonable. But the trunk board would sink. So I made a new one. They are pretty easy to make. I used 3/8" plywood which is strong enough to support a bunch of weight, but not so thick as to stick up too high under the carpet. BTW, this is my 2000 Honda Civic.

For those who don't have the original liner, just lay some paper or cardboard inside and trace & trim it until you have a pattern that fits.

Ok, so I did this a couple of months ago and here are my notes. I have a Toyota Camry, and I bought two 2'x4' pieces of 3/8" plywood from Menards because they fit easily in my car and I just wanted to get the project done in one day. I can't fit a 4'x4' piece in my car. I traced my own pattern on packing paper I'd saved to make sewing patterns with. You could use posterboard instead. I made my pattern larger than the actual trunk board, because I wanted to extend the edges so it would be a flat level surface across most of my trunk. One 2'x4' ended up covering 90% of the hole, and it didn't seem worth it to cut up the 2nd piece just to cover that back 10% gap. I have a lot of leftover boards, so I found a couple of 1/2" thick ones that fit just right and laid them over the back 10%. There's a slight bump since they are 1/2" thick and the plywood I used is 3/8" thick, but so far, it hasn't been a problem. I had a really hard time finding the smaller 3/8" plywood pieces in the store (the 4'x8' was easy to find), and I considered other thicknesses and types of plywood. I would say don't use any other thickness - the 1/2" is too thick and the 1/4" is too thin. If you have a battery-powered jigsaw (which I do), you can stick it in your car and cut the plywood in the store parking lot just enough to fit it into your car (if you've made the pattern first and know where you can make a rough cut), but the store will probably not like that. I chose not to do that, but it's an option. It wouldn't take long, and you'd probably be done before they even noticed. Obviously, you should take your measurements and make your pattern before purchasing the plywood. A 4'x4" piece was just a few inches too big to fit into either the back seat or trunk of my car, but it would have been preferable.

We were limited to a giant saw only capable of making square cuts. We started with a 4'X4' 1/4" plywood (3/8 in. out of stock) and worked our way down from there. Total cost: $10.80

Unless you have the same model/year of car, the measurements will likely be irrelevant. If you don't have the original trunk board in your car, you can probably find the slightly sunken area where the trunk board sits and measure that. There is usually something to hold the board, to hold it in position and keep it from sliding around.

The carpet will likely be larger than the board. Look under the carpet. There will likely be a slightly sunken border around the spare wheel well. This is what the trunk board sits in so it doesn't slide around. Make the board so it fits into that.

It seems that the Styrofoam lids for the Tire Inflator Kits they now put in most GM products instead of a mini-spare gets thrown away for some reason. I recently bought a 2013 Chevy Spark and it has the flimsy trunk area, but its because someone chunked the Styrofoam cover to that kit. I found a pic of a lid but no one wants to sell the lids separate from the inflator kit. Gonna look into making my own from plywood, but the way its built I will have to enhance the height of it to make it fit correctly. Maybe someone has already done that here?
