Nice video! I paddled the river this year. The logjams have gotten worse in the past years. There's a logjam after 1 km on the river. The first big logjam is impasseble. After 10 and 14 km there's been cutt troughs in recent years and the river is blocked by logs. Scurvy Creek has broken through. 10 km before the conjunction with the Yukon the river has changed a lot.
Thanks for the info! It is a very active river cutting through and creating loop constantly. It really surprised me that time but your information is further confirmation. It is a great river though. PS I have pinned your comment as I think the information is very important for anyone paddling this river. Thank you.

What beautiful country! I have paddled the YRQ and Y!K Yukon canoe races 5 times and just can't get enough of it. Ray, your video brings back such wonderful memories of that country. Very high water in the entire territory this year (2021). Reports are of several new logjams and has it cut through some new meanders and undercutting old banks to create plenty of new sweepers.
Nice trip. My buddies and I are talking about doing the Yukon River from Whitehorse to Dawson City before we get too old. The baby in our group is 53! 😂
Thank you Ray for the wonderful, beautiful and interesting video. Amazing scenery, river and wildlife! You got a new subscriber from Finland. Wishing all the best, and happy new year to you and yours 🙂
Thank you for sharing, what an adventure, fantastic. The upper Big Salmon has high sinuosity, above the average sinuosity of Pi 3.14. Looking forward to next instalment.

Beautiful and inspiring trip. - thank you. I would like to do it one day. What did you find most difficult during the trip mosquitoes , bears etc.? What is the best time to come?
We paddled it in late July. You can check with an outfitter but there is only a relatively clear period of a couple of months when it is good. We were lucky and mosquitoes were not much of a problem but as ever all of us had full bug suits for the few occasions that they were about. Bears: We maintain very clean camps and walk the food barrels well out of camp each night. Even our wash kits go in the food barrels. We carried pepper spray. But bear sightings are rare and tend to be trip highlights: we only saw one on this trip. It is a fantastic river.
@RayGoodwinCanoe Many Thanks Ray for useful information. Unfortunately due to lack of participants and interest( I am using organised tours) I had to switch to Teslin River this year. My adventure will start late August and I am looking forward to it. I wonder if you ever paddled Teslin River? Also I would like to purchase your book "Canoeing" ideally with personal dedication. Please send me link so that I can complete payment. Best Regards Pawel
It is not hard paddling down the river but you do have to have the ability to manoeuvre the canoe in quick moving water. There are lots of sweepers (fallen trees overhanging the river) so you need to keep your wits about you and move about the river. But largely the paddling is on grade 1 white water with a couple of sections easy grade 2. Better in a group but a fantastic trip that I would thoroughly recommend.
Awesome. The girlfriend and I are planning a trip down the Yukon river from Whitehorse to Dawson City. Any particularly perilous spots on the river? Any advice? Great video
I would be careful on Lake Laberge. The type of sudden wind shown at the start of my trip can happen at any time so follow the edge around and don't be tempted to go straight across. 2nd At Five Finger Rapid make sure you take the far right channel: the guide book emphasises this route. Use Rourke's guide book and a link for it is in the description below the video. Follow all the advise about keeping food out of your campsite at night: you will see bears. Have fun
Hi, after the Big Salmon confluence with the Yukon we paddled on to Carmacks and then on to Dawson to finish there. The Big Salmon was in whole different league to the Yukon and was definitely the best way to do the trip for us.
Hi Ray! My name is Marcelo, I'm from Brazil and I'm planning for August 2022 a trip across the Big Salmon and Yucon River to Dawson. Hi Marcello, Yes an inflatable kayak would work well on the Big Salmon. But choosing the start point will be important. There's a big difference viewing wildlife in their natural habitat. In parks and conservation areas, they tend to know they are untouchable, but, in the wild, they truly show their animal nature, they know about the cycles of life, predator versus prey, and they behave obviously as they ought to. Loved that mate
Ps is this the trip you did just before you came out for the family thing a couple of years back ? I’m guessing, yes given the Yukon bit
I ont even go into how good it will be to even get out again, punters or not, nowadays ... tbh, still not thinking of anything further than “the new bloody normal” because I dare not
Love to yours
Yes, July 2019 and only now sorting the video out! I am so looking forward to getting back to normal. Best wishes and here's to getting back to the Ardeche.
In wich month of the year you made the Trip?
First week of July for this section.
@@RayGoodwinCanoe Thank you. Not to much water in the Salmon this time...
Thank you so much for not ruining it with music. Forehead to put music in there, I would never watch it. 👍
Like you I like the sounds of the river and lake. Better than any music I could choose.
