This has been discussed before and as a mixed black man it’s seems reductive to say Asians are white adjacent since Asians themselves aren’t a monolith. There’s nuance to it. When people say white adjacent Asians I think they’re mostly thinking of Asians that assimilate to white suburban culture and tend to be lighter skinned Asians (east Asians). People also have to realize that although America is diverse and places like NYC are really diverse there are still a ton of ethnic enclaves and there are many that don’t really venture out of that bubble for numerous reasons but it mostly comes back to culture. There’s a strong intersectionality to racial hierarchies, I.e. although Asians do well economically and contribute greatly to companies they work for they had the lowest rate of being chosen for leadership positions. They also sometimes encounter the glass ceiling from their more competitive white counterparts. There’s also Indians who aren’t light skinned but can be even more white adjacent in their thought process than East Asians (Vivek ramaswamy & Ann Coulter Incident). For the most part the Asians that are white adjacent tend to be motivated by status, family values, culture and community. Even in places like China and India if you’re from certain regions separated by a few hundred miles families don’t want you marrying their son/daughter. There’s many layers to it and it’s annoying to keep hearing all these articles pushing narratives that generalize a group.

When we are Asians, we are seen as outsiders, and treated bad. Assimilation mentality is born from thinking that if we drop our Asianess and just hard adopt other people's cultures and behaviors here we'll be accepted. This has obviously not really worked and now we still get treated like shit and we often don't even see things from an Asian perspective which is where you get boba liberals and cons who champion usually white or black issues, and are ignorant of or downplay Asian issues to be solved. So we get hate still, but now people also claim we "have no culture" or we're not original because we hard adopted other people's to try and not get hate crimed.

No, East Asians aren't white adjacent. Some South Asians are, like Niki Hailey, but most aren't. White adjacent in the US includes very light skinned "black" people, biracial people, Latinos of predominantly European ancestry or appearance and arguably many MENA people. Some MENA people are in fact fully in the white group.

During the latter Apartheid Era of South Africa, visiting Japanese were granted the legal status of 'Honorary Whites'. This provided them similar rights to those of the local white population. Such a turn of events was largely based on the rising wealth and power of Japan in the world. 'White adjacent' comes across as an American cultural version of Honorary White. The growing geopolitical and economic heft of East Asian nations and the incredible success of many immigrant Asians in the high tech fields has likely lead to this phenomenon.

Nah. The term is an attempt to fix a contradiction in a fualty ideological structure. It happened from both sides of the coin. In the modern American case, the ideology is set up with the base assumption that America is constructed explicitly to the benefit of whites to the exclusion of non-whites. Certain asian ethnic groups prove this assumption wrong, but instead of changing the ideological assumption, the adherents instead employ a linguistic trick to sidestep it and avoid seriously considering their preconceptions.

I agree with this statement. Asians have their own unique identity. It's ok to be your unique self. If you are equating smart with white or prosperity with white, well there are prosperous Arabs in Dubai, rich Blacks in Atlanta etc etc. These attributes i e. smart, intelligent, etc do not make you white. These are attributes that can be found in any culture. There are poor white people. Some Russians are dirt poor, so being white does not necessarily translate into being smart or rich. You get the point.
In America, all people care about is money and success. This is why Michael Jordan is respected around the world and can marry any woman, N E woman, he desires. It has nothing to do with the color of his skin, rather the life he can provide for his partner.
This is all most people care about. If Asians stop making bread, they would fall out of graces with the American elites i.e. caucasians. If Mexicans started making cake, they would be the "it" group.
Asians have done a great job in breaking through economic barriers by being very scholastically and fiscally disciplined. They come from great nuclear families that help facilitate this. Blacks in America have never had this ever living here. Nigerians, Ethiopians etc come from intact families and their children are economically well off than most African Americans. If this part can be healed and fixed within African Americans, the tide will change drastically in America. Also, Black people are not trying to be white. Yeah, some want to be accepted by this group of people because you have to work amongst them, and to some degree you have to acquiesce and adapt in order to get them to accept you, but really most realize that they are unique and will never be them, but that's just the way God wants it. You can never be your full you trying to be what someone else wants you to be, because then you are living a lie, which will eventually drive you to a psychiatrist at age 50.

@jt6231 it's called context, bud. When the French colonized Vietnam, a lot of the local Vietnamese women would try to look "french" because the french institution viewed Vietnamese as uncivilized. The same happened to the Philippines. A lot of filipinas view flat noses as unattractive due to spanish colonization.
The very concept is applied here. Most american born asian have no sense of identity and have consumed majority of western propaganda through their life. So even they though they are physical asian, mentally they're white. And dying your hair blonde is a byproduct of European colonization aka fitting.
And there is a different between a minority trying to appeal to the majority to fit in, compare to the majority exploiting minority for structural power.
For example, asian american are force to learn English, because if they don't they can't navigate in white men world. On the flip side, white people only learn foreign languages or wear other ethnic clothing to gain leverages in gaining power on minority.

Lmao Schrodinger's Minority is aptly put. But yeah, I get the sentiment of "white adjacent" but its not something you can declare. When I was younger I benefited from the privileges by being around white people, but as I got older and had my "Asian awakening" I noticed those people got quiet real fast and I was on my own. So yeah, it's funny how I was on "their team" when I was quiet and it was convenient for them, but as soon as I started opening up I wasn't. I know this doesn't apply to everyone, but I've seen people still live this way and deny their native tongue, religion, and relationships just so they can continue benefiting from white privilege. Can't blame them, but that's their insecurities and dishonesty they gotta work through.
I would also say that this term, while helpful to describe the phenomena above, is probably harmful to younger Asians just trying to find themselves and feel guilty and insecure that they're "too white" or "not Asian enough" when that shouldn't be a concern. It also fails to acknowledge actual struggles Asians go through, especially the negative side "white adjacency" that I described above.

And I didn’t know what that meant but he said people of different races had to live separately and he lived with the white people. As Hispanic/Latino male I don’t view Asians as white adjacent. I do believe that certain East Asian groups such as Chinese, Japanese and Korean having certain advantages over other minority groups in the US such as Southeast Asians, Hispanics/Latinos and African Americans. There are a lot of Southeast Asian groups who live in poverty such as Vietnamese, Cambodian, Burmese, Hmong and Laotian. The media representation for Asian Americans hasn’t been that good with the emasculation of Asian men and the fetishization of Asian women. There has also been a lot of Asian discrimination around the world due to COVID. The Model Minority Myth has driven a wedge between Asians and other minorities due to the false narrative that Asians have privilege in the U.S. and are all wealthy and successful. So my mother is Korean and my father is black, I was born however as a dark skinned African-American. In college I had a ton of Asian friends and roommates, and now looking back with hindsight, I can understand what people mean when they say Asians are "white adjacent". Most, if not all of my Asian friends tended to mimic and adopt white stereotypical behavior. Apart from Asian, they tended to have EXCLUSIVELY white friends, with me being the obvious exception. I remember some of the Asian girlfriends of my roommates being very "standoffish" towards me, especially this Japanese and (obviously high status) Pakistani girl. For instance they'd never shake my hand, at least not voluntarily. When we used to have board game night, I always noticed their antagonistic and dismissive tone towards me. The Pakistani girlfriend was the most insufferable. She was almost white in appearance (and clearly proud of this fact), obviously upper class (I think her family were Brahmin) and so I guess she disdained having to associate with someone of my skin color, even though she was the one visiting her boyfriend in the house we shared, so basically my house. I never felt offended as such, I mostly just felt sorry for her. Imagine having to go through life with such insecurities!
Speaking of which, I think this is the reason so many Asians in America tend to gravitate towards white culture, white behavior, white speaking patterns, etc. - it has to do with MASSIVE cultural insecurities, and the only way to overcome these insecurities is to "one up" the dominant culture. This is why Asians in America tend to be so successful. They have a cultural inferiority complex that drives them to not only identify with the white dominant culture, but to surpass it at all costs. So you have to outdo white people in their own culture by playing the violin BETTER than them, by playing the piano BETTER than them, by getting BETTER jobs and making MORE money than them, by buying BIGGER houses than them, by acting WHITER than them, speaking WHITER than them. And only after you've thoroughly outperformed them, can you finally say "I've arrived". It's basic psychology, but also a heavy burden to bear. That's why I'm not offended when some Asians refuse to have anything to do with me because I'm black - I know they're suffering from an inferiority complex. A Korean friend confirmed as much - he warned me NEVER to go to Korea as Koreans are NOTORIOUSLY racist towards black people. I don't need to travel all the way to Korea to believe him, I've seen enough proof of this living in America.
This is why that Vivek Ramaswamy/Ann Coulter episode struck such a resonant chord with so many Black Americans. From a black point of view, here you have a brown Asian man with a massive cultural inferiority complex, doing all he can to suck up to white people and imbibe white culture. He even endeavored to achieve the ultimate in appropriating whiteness - become the ruler of a majority white country. Until, that is, he was RUDELY reminded by the White Queen herself that 1) he's NOT white, 2) he'll NEVER be white, and 3) he'll NEVER be accepted by whites. In their eyes, he's just another uppity brown boy from the squalid slums of India. For make no mistake about it, this was a well-rehearsed speech on the part of Ann Coulter, designed to correct a grievously held misconception on the part of Ramaswamy. To her mind she was no doubt doing Ramaswamy, as well as the entire nation, a badly needed favor by saying the quiet part loud, purposefully unfiltered and without so much as batting an eye to his stunned, and for the first time in history, speechless face. She, for her part, appeared noticeably pleased with the effect of her effort.
All the Asians I know, every single one of them, have either married white individuals or have white partners. Even my Filipino best friend who just came out the other day and who'd never dated a man before now has a white husband - basically he married the first white man he could get his hands on. All of his four sisters are likewise married to white husbands, which means his Filipino parents are now the proud parents-in-law to five WHITE sons (Thanksgiving at their house looks no doubt like an Abercrombie & Fitch catalog). His former Filipino girlfriend is also now married to a white man. My white Chinese roommate from college now has a white wife. Before that he had exclusively white girlfriends. Those insufferable Asian girlfriends who my college roommates were dating all those years ago? Well according to FaceBook they're now both happily married to white husbands. On the other hand, I don't know a single Asian friend that either has a black spouse or ever dated a black person. They don't even have black friends, which is quite an accomplishment given that they live in major cities like NY and SF. Check the Facebook friends list of my numerous Asian friends and all you'll see are white and Asian faces, and not the brown type. Come to think of it, the only Asian person I know that ever dated a black man was my mother!

I am curious about the Asian community's perception of indigenous Americans. Sometimes, we are called "Native Americans'. Other times, we are referred to as "First Nations". I suppose the latter is more pragmatic. The theory is that the "Native Americans" are actually Asians from near Siberia and Nepal who migrated across the Bering Strait. The topic is highly controversial. From the scientific perspective, skeptics point out the need for a human specimen of the era to corroborate such claims. But that region is now under water - hence it impedes gathering of forensic evidence via anthropological digging sites.
With that said, the recent advancements in genetics have brought about massive, quantitative analysis of genetic drift in human migratory patterns. In the case of Native Americans, the DNA analysis seems to suggest that Native Americans originated from a group of people who had resided near northern China and Siberia. But conflicts arose with the arrival of ancestors of the modern Chinese. So, the net effect was migration of many "tribes" from that region into North America.
One of the theories is that my tribe, the Apaches, are related to the Sherpas. The Sherpas are known as excellent mountain runners. So are the Apaches. That is literally our name - "The Mountain People". The theory is that the Apaches migrated across the Bering Strait and came down into modern AZ and NM via the Rocky Mountains. The tribe was known for its long-distance running ability through mountainous terrain - like the Sherpas. I find that theory fascinating.
Keep in mind that this post is HIGHLY INFORMAL with no intent to generate citations of a journal, or a writing format expected at major conference proceedings. This is just an informal blog. I defer to such conference proceedings if one wants to get into formal discussions with such experts on DNA and migratory patterns of human populations.
You guys post a lot of topics on interracial dating. In modern times, most Native Americans are part white. It's very rare to find a "full-blooded Indian". They tend to cluster in rural areas like the Four Corners or Northern Plains. Out East and the Midwest, most of them are part white. In regard to interracial dating, both genders marry into mixed white relationships a lot. The native male or female both have the same high probability of marrying a white person given the historical data and proximity to mainstream American culture and people. This is different for your channel which seems to highlight the Asian female and white male as more prevalent. For some reason, it's not like that with Native Americans. The height also varies a lot. Many Native Americans do get tall. The tribes of Montana and the Dakotas have won a lot of state championships in basketball. It's just that they usually didn't get recruited due to racism. But that is finally changing.
So, do you consider us "Asian"? I guess it's too hard to answer given that the Bering Strait Theory is considered "plausible" but "needs more data to be convincing" for skeptics in the field. However, the theory appears to be largely presented as true in some academic circles of discussion.

There was an instance in K-town LA where the parents specifically called the mental health crisis number, police were dispatched, and the guy was shot and killed in his own home.

Unless whoever gets in power completely overhauls the system and turns it into some kind of ethnic hierarchy the system doesn't work on racial dimensions. The "system" works on individual action from the bottom up in America. So these people are willing to call East Asians “white-adjacent” or put them in the same ‘non-POC’ category as White people whenever it’s politically and socially convenient but will still consider someone like a Iranian, Georgian or Kalash person who is racially White/Caucasian, shares similar Indo-European ancestors with Modern Europeans, and can be very White-passing at times
as still being “Brown” or a “POC”? I don’t get it at all.
If that’s the case then according to these people your race is only determined more by your social economic status rather than your actual racial background or phenotype. Which means in theory, I- as a dark Blasian person can be “white adjacent” too if i reached a certain social-economic threshold and would no longer count as a POC in certain conversations according to American liberal politics. Because I wouldn’t know what it’s like to be in poverty or be oppressed and held back by institutional and political structures made to keep POC from succeeding? U.S politics is nothing but a bunch of a nonsense. 🤷🏾

yeah it's not "American politics" that is nonsense. It's racial politics imposed on a system wherein it makes no sense. It's the refusal to accept that the American system isn't actually race-based that creates all these insane contradictions. The "white-adjacent" thing is an attempt to correct one such contradiction. You can accurately talk about an ethnic hierarchy in a place like China where the government imposes restrictions and penalties on certain ethnic groups, but it never makes sense in America, because there is no imposed ethnic hierarchy. There will never be a Uygur chairman of the CCP, because the system is actually an ethnic hierarchy. But there has been a black president, vice president, many generals, congressmen and congresswomen, senators, judges etc etc.

I am a follower of Jesus. I have read the entire Bible which consist also of the Torah. There is no mention of the word Black, White, Asian, Hispanic in these Holy and ancient books, and there's a reason for that. Race is a Darwinian European concept. People who are evolutionist who believe we evolved from a cell into something more complex, with Europeans being the most evolved. If you believe in that theory, instead of God's answer, you inherently believe that Europeans are the more evolved of the human family. Of course people who enslaved others embraced this theory whole heartedly because it justified the ill treatment of those people.
Most people who subscribe to the theory of evolution, don't even realize that they subconsciously subscribe to this concept of a more superior group of humans and an inferior group of humans. After all, if humans are evolving, the superior group is evolving from something less to something greater. However, if you believe in God, you believe that He created the human family in His image, therefore all humans possess His nature of greatness, creativity, compassion etc and are therefore valuable simply because........ they are God's.

That's a really horrible interpretation of Evolution
      Evolution is descent with modification.
DNA is constantly mutating. Some of those mutations produce helpful traits, some are not so helpful. The helpful traits, like the ones that allow you to get more food, lead to greater survival rates and more offspring.
It has nothing to do with superiority. It has everything to do with adapting to one's environment.
When lifeforms migrate to another environment, Usually due to food resources, the lifeforms that survive in that environment go on to produce offspring. Those that don't survive in the environment need to migrate or die off.
Environments change. Same deal. Lifeforms that can survive that change go on to produce offspring. Those who cannot survive need to migrate or die off.
Evolution is not about from less to greater. It's about adaptation.
      You should read Franz Boas.

Blacks get pulled over going over 100 mph and they immediately get arrested, sometimes they get shot. I've gotten pulled over doing 105 and 120, and the officers in both instances said "hi, how are you..." and eventually told me to move on and be careful.
Ahmaud Arbery got hunted down and killed when he walked on to a construction site. I used to do that all the time on my daily runs and walks. I walk around those half built residential units exactly like Arbery did, just being curious, looking for ideas. Contractors and cops sometimes pull up on me, but they say "hello, you must be the owner, how are you doing sir?"
One time, a cop gave me a speeding ticket, and then called me a minute later saying he canceled the ticket. He somehow searched and found my phone number after I drove away, and explained that as long as he cancels within 5 minutes, it will not appear in the system... therefore, he said, I do not have to pay the ticket.

Yeah David. Asian Americans demographically is impacted by socially engineering US immigration policies which favor crazy rich Asian immigrants who are educated accomplished and did not grow up in America. The success of Asian American immigrants is partially or significantly due to their native nation/society that supported their development before they immigrated to America. White and Black American are more native born and are more often impacted by US racial historical politics. Native Born Asian American often have many of the same challenges and concerns as other People of Color in White American Society. When I was attending the University there very few ABCs of any generation so as a group ABC were compared by admissions soley on race and we had to compete with wealthier immigrant international Asian students... but because white and black international students were few, -- native born American whites and blacks were not subject to this kind of international academic competition. So American Born Asian American students have to compete at the University race-based admissions at a global level while non-Asian did not. Coupled this with the racially hostile academic environment for Asian descent male students - it was no cake walk getting an education in America for me. Is Republican Elaine Chao White Adjacent since she married Republican Conservative white senator Mitch McConnell? Would African American SCOTUS Justice Clarence Thomas be a white Adjacent (or an Uncle Tom) for marrying a white Republican Party Activist Ginny Thomas? That is to say is the political affiliation to Conservative America make one more White Society aligned than a more liberally progressive American Politics like African American Activist Grace Lee Boggs?

I kind of understand what people mean by this. East Asian & Caucasian societies share the similarity where social order is often valued over personal agency. This leads to white & east asian countries being much more heavily policed than other countries, as well as the police being much more difficult to bribe.
I would also say that black people and latinos are more adjacent to each other, for example look at USA culture. Out of every racial group, hispanics & latinos are by far more likely to integrate into black neighborhoods and align with black culture. You rarely see white, Asian or arabs grow up and adapt in a predominantly african american neighborhood but latinos are more likely to fit right in.
I believe there are a lot of reasons for these interracial similarities. For example hot adaptation vs cold adaptation. Peoples who come from hot climates often had access to more resources (fruits, vegetables, grains, animals) so survival itself isnt particularly difficult. However the hotter climate and having to be in a constant state of heat lead people from these climates to adopt a more confrontational temperament, because its much harder to avoid conflict when everyone in a village is extremely hot constantly and huddled up together in tight spaces.
On the other hand, people who adapted to colder climates had more of a struggle for survival, meaning if anything went wrong and your family/community had a schism , that would be much more disastrous. Winters can kill you very fast, especially hundreds of years ago when we didnt have massive supplies of food stored in huge grocery stores. Social cohesion is much more important in cold adapted societies if for no other reason than to avoid death.
I also dont think its a coincidence how whites and east asians share a lighter skin complexion in comparison to other races. People with similar physical attributes tend to be similar in other aspects as well.

I live in San Francisco, latinx and work in a majority senior cantonese residential facility. I used to think asians were all white adjacent, and while I still think the majority are, but working in this environment I have come to know asians who are not at all for assimilation and honestly those tend to be the nicest to me. The white adjacent ones are more distant. Some are shocked when they realize I speak a little cantonese, and when I look up online a translation can pronounce something with a perfect accent. Some don't even speak their language whereas the VAST majority of latinxs speak Spanish or some.

It seems to be more about how people are treated and respected than about wealth. Even Hitler called Asians (not sure which ones he was referring to) as honorary Aryans. It's more about not being racially profiled, having quick and easier access to business loans, being given the benefit of the doubt and most of the stereotypes are not linked to criminality or ratchetness.

    • @Paul-bs5wl
      @Paul-bs5wl 4 месяца назад

Hitler was referring to the Japanese, because the Japanese were his allies. He did not think the same of the Chinese who were fighting against the Japanese, and definitely not about Indians. He also may have had this opinion about some middle eastern groups because they shared his hatred for Jews. He needed to resolve the contradiction in his faulty ideological worldview.
Which is exactly why this term exists today. Because weird race obsessed ideologes are running around with an incorrect worldview that requires linguistic tricks to resolve.

Another question to ask is, what is asian? Tbh I found the word 'asian' is a very vague word, the fact you don't need to look asian to be asian, it's as if anyone coming from any of asian countries [regardless of facial features], like I know someone who's grandma's from Armenia, and she grew up in Switzerland , who looks 100% white, but you can't deny that fact that she's part asian, or has asian root, but her facial feature does not fit into the typical asian look, still she considers herself as part asian, altho she identifies herself more as caucasian bc of her cultural background, but she would also check the 'asian' box on forms from time to time. What I'm saying is that, white can be asian too according to geography and the list of asian countries, because apparently asians does not have a typical list of physical featuers (altho me, as an ethnic han chinese myself, has the east asian face when it comes to what's considered as 'asian'). On the other hand, east asian cannot be really be white.
Even the concept of white is very weak tbh, if you look at people in the middle east, many people there possess what we consider as white features, tall nose bridge, big eyes with colorful iris. And if you simply place them in any european countries, they will likely to look 'white'! I look at my spanish husband and I often thought, if he has slightly darker skin color, he would prob looks pretty middle eastern given his beard and curly hair. So what is white?
I once travelled to Lebanon, people there look very white, and I honestly thought I was in Europe iso west asia, so are they asian? Do they think they're asians or white? or do they see themselves as white asian?
last time I checked asian population is over 4.561 billion, that's more than half of world's population!

Asian literally just means Easterner. It's based on an Assyrian word meaning East; Asu. Greeks coined the term and that's what they called everyone East of them. European is based on Eurob which means West, also an Assyrian word.
That's why Asian used to refer to Western and Central Asians only and East/Southeast Asians were called Oriental.

    • @JL_hahaha0303
      @JL_hahaha0303 4 месяца назад

@@joodeki this is clearly not the ‘typical’ Asian that this video is referring to at all. Also the word Asia also has a Greek root meaning to go out, rise. Nowadays the word Asian refers to simply people of Asia or Asian descent. Also as far as I can rmb the word oriental is no longer used in the US since it somehow has a negative connotation or a racist vibe to it. Not that I agree to it or not, just info that I rmb

    • @joodeki
      @joodeki 4 месяца назад +1

@JL_hahaha0303 Agreed, was just giving some historical context that the word Asian didn't start off as a continent level "race" and was a regional term until Americans started using it as a racial category. Which is why the original Asians are less "Asian" than today's Asians.
I know in the UK the word Asian is still used for Westerner Asians and not for Far East Asians.
And yeah, Oriental is not in use anymore but when it was still being used, no one was calling that eastern side of the world as Asians. Heck, no one but China had a word for modern Asians; Yazhou. Everyone else borrowed the word Asia.
