On the night of 30 September, 1983, the Historical Society of Berks County, Reading, Pennsylvania, celebrated the 150th Anniversary of The Philadelphia and Reading Railway's charter with a series of special steam-powered excursion trains.
The Reading Railroad had an unquestioned impact on the City whose name it carried. As a pioneering railroad in America, the Reading helped open vast new arteries of commerce and trade for the eastern United States.
As a railroad company, The Reading has a long and impressive list of "firsts" for the railroad industry, beginning with "Old Ironsides" - the first steam locomotive of famed builder Matthias Baldwin - which in turn became the first engine in regular service in Pennsylvania
During the great railroad building era, as lines were pushing ever westward, the Reading Railroad became the largest tonnage carrier between 1842 and 1875. By the 1880s, The Reading was the biggest corporate business entity on earth.
In its heyday, the Reading Shops located along North 6th Street of Reading, Pennsylvania, employed more than 6,000 people, making The Reading the largest single employer in the City. As trains thundered along its routes, The Reading affected people's lives from Philadelphia to Williamsport, from Rutherford to Bethlehem, and on to Jersey City Terminal. Sounds of industry reverberated day and night.
This historic recording, commissioned by the Historical Society of Berks County, recaptures some of those operating sounds.
