Meh. The entire population lives in lowland cities though. An invading army could take over Geneva and Zurich pretty easily. Yes, invading the Swiss uplands would be impossible but that area can't support a population and no one lives there. This isn't to take anything away from Switzerland. I have all the respect in the world for them.
Hawker Hunter's, DH Venom's, Centurion tanks and horses travelling in the back of a lorry...what more could you want ? Superb video...Don't fuck with Switzerland.
There is a reason for the famed swiss neutrality; When Switzerland was initially established as a nation it was dirt poor, believe it or not. The only thing the Swiss had was manpower, so they turned to the second most ancient profession in the world, mercenaries. For the next century, they were killing each other in foreign battlefields for their masters, or whoever paid them. So when the nation began to be well off due to the banking system, they made sure they would never, ever, find themselves in the same predicament, through their neutrality. My 2 cents.
their first method of income generation was robbing their neighbors. after their retailation failed, they became famed as good fighters - transitioning to merc service. at some point then the nation outlawed that because, despite the heaps of money, it felt weird to have two opposing armies, somewhere in europe, hurling the same insults at each other from the last christmas gathering.
True story: When visiting Switzerland in 1912, Kaiser Wilhelm II asked a Swiss colonel what they would do with their 250,000 men if he invaded with 500,000. His response was “Shoot twice and go home, your Majesty”.
It’s kinda weird seeing a mix between German ww2 style equipment and uniform with western vehicles, Swiss army looks like it the Germans were allied to the western powers in ww2
The Video is called "Werhafte Schweiz" - it was an impressive piece back to the Landesausstellung 1964 i think. Impressive because resolution, storytelling, shot-type, coloring etc are not bad for swiss in 1964... Served from 95 to '05 - br Edit and PS: Here it is: ruclips.net/video/z7pLO-vfQh0/видео.html
Good match between the music and the video, thanks for the good job done. By the way, geographically speaking, Switzeland is a real bunker by itself, and you've got thousands of natural features that are easy to turn into a booby trap. Add the political will to defend agressively, the high quality of the local military and the carefull preparation for a defense in depth, you've got a potential Vietnam-like battlefield for every would-be invader. That is why nobody took the gauntlet and tried his chance in both World Wars.
Hard to believe this is from '64. The Hawker Hunters were a great aircraft - probably not quite as good as the Sabre in the fighter role but excellent as a ground attack aircraft. The Venom however was a dangerous aircraft to fly and eject from RAF were glad to get rid of theirs.
Switzerland’s greatest strength is it’s irrelevance as a war target. There’s no natural resources (except salt mines) and an invasion of Switzerland would be costly both economically and in military losses. Switzerland reinforced this with an excellent defence system of “armed neutrality” and protracted warfare. It almost was the same for Sweden during the Cold War as Sweden greatly increases its military defences and also went with “armed neutrality” and protracted warfare. (Though Sweden had some military importance as they control Gotland, a semi-important naval base and could potentially be armed to house rocket sites or naval fortresses to impose power in the Baltic Sea)
Hitler actually considered invading Switzerland to create a path that would lead to France without encountering the Maginot line. But luckily for the Swiss he decided to go trough Belgium instead. The Soviets also had plans for invading Switzerland. I even saw one myself at the Festungsmuseum Reuenthal, Switzerland.
@@conferencecaller8111 there were. Switzerlands best player was the all seeing general Guisan who made a defense that was just perfect for the country. His defense lines took advantage of the terrain and basically made tge southern part of Switzerland a giant lawn protected by mountains and tank traps. He also knew that Switzerland wasn't tgat important so he made the army so strong tgat you would lose more from taking Switzerland than gain.
From all that cool stuff only the horses remain in active service. Good old Train with the saddles from 1910 (oldest one I've seen) still going up the mountains.
The military doctrine at the time was a general retreat to the Alps (=Le Réduit) where the Army was fully equipped to fight with the advantage of terrain. Hence you see all the Troops marching in the beginning of the video and then the remainding of the Film is taking places in mountainous terrain.
might be unpopular because it goes against this myth, but it seems a simpler solution that the princes and rulers of europe made an agreement not to touch switzerland because its where they cache their stolen wealth. there are several other banking nations with similar histories that also seem off limits to wars for profit
It’s pretty cheap. Honestly besides the camo colors you’re probably better off with German stuff. It’s actually pretty comfy. The Swiss stuff you really have to break in tho. I use the pants I have for hunting and I use the jacket in the garden until I break it in enough for hunting.
This movie is called "La Suisse Vigilante", you can find it on the Swiss Army website and it's also available on RUclips, but the two version are not exactly the same and some of the footage are different :)
The joke is that due to mandatory military service and a militia army, the Swiss army is actually one of the biggest in Europe when purely speaking about numbers.
Switzerland has many formidable weapons, but by far among the most terrifying and ubiquitous are the vacuum cleaner, the soap pail, the mop, the waste bin, and the scrubbing brush...
In WWII, both Germany and Switzerland knew that any war between the two nations would end in German victory. Switzerland's national defense strategy was therefor planned around a war of attrition. Make any German victory so costly that Germany wouldn't be easily able to recoup losses as a plan of deterrence.
We have in Finland same situation with Russia. Make it hard and long battle with querilla tactics also. Every man go to army for 6-8 or 12 months. Population only 6million, still stopped CCCP.
@@BS-my6qx Know what's better than paying someone to watch your money, not paying someone to watch your money. Germany had written up several plans to invade Switzerland and were prepared to execute them had it not been for the deteriorating war situation.
One of the most remarkable countries and people in the world. Most people would be shocked to know how small they are, yet are so influential. Like the Germans they seem blissfully unaware it's possible to make low quality things. Given their terrain, they're tough as nails, yet soooo nice. I never had to pay for a hotel/hostel there because everyone wanted me to stay at their beautiful house and feed me amazing food. Invading them is like invading heaven itself if God trained and supplied everyone with rifles, turned their cellars into bunkers (every house has a bomb shelter), and spent 2 years in the military. Even the craziest world powers (Nazis, Soviet bloc) that surround them seem to agree. Should anyone mess with them, they'd have the full might of all western nations to deal with, and frankly, they'd be totally safe even if they completely dismantled their military. As an American, I for one would raise bloody hell if we didn't step in for them should they encounter provocation. No one will invade Switzerland and it has almost nothing to do with their military might, but much ro do with their character and terrain.d
I've lived in Switzerland for one year, in 2009. When every citizen can be a soldier it is really hard to invade a country. A friend told me about the "Granatieri", the Swiss elite and offensive troopers, and about the airbases all over the Alps (as in the movie). I also remember several fighters often flying in the skies. One could have a high military cost trying to invade Switzerland indeed. Greetings and respect from Brazil.

The altitude effect was so much more than I ever expected.
@@maevethefox5912 the Swiss really are perfectly situated for defense.
Meh. The entire population lives in lowland cities though. An invading army could take over Geneva and Zurich pretty easily. Yes, invading the Swiss uplands would be impossible but that area can't support a population and no one lives there.
This isn't to take anything away from Switzerland. I have all the respect in the world for them.
Can invades but you need Negativ Covid-19 Test.
Video of a military from half a century ago, still a better recruitment video than what the UK and USA uses now.
Yeah... once I saw those horses in the truck, I would have screamed, "I don't need to see anymore! Where do I sign up???"
Hawker Hunter's, DH Venom's, Centurion tanks and horses travelling in the back of a lorry...what more could you want ? Superb video...Don't fuck with Switzerland.
I love America, even with all it's flaws, but if I were to ever leave I'm going straight to Switzerland!
There is a reason for the famed swiss neutrality;
When Switzerland was initially established as a nation it was dirt poor, believe it or not.
My 2 cents.
Yeah but also because they've been forced into neutrality by the french because they lost a war.
their first method of income generation was robbing their neighbors. after their retailation failed, they became famed as good fighters - transitioning to merc service. at some point then the nation outlawed that because, despite the heaps of money, it felt weird to have two opposing armies, somewhere in europe, hurling the same insults at each other from the last christmas gathering.
Nobody invades Switzerland, they are protected by Darth Vader helmeted Wermacht !
Those helmets. All I saw was those helmets.
Epic.

The only way to invade Switzerland is from the ground up! The Dune movie style.
True story:
When visiting Switzerland in 1912, Kaiser Wilhelm II asked a Swiss colonel what they would do with their 250,000 men if he invaded with 500,000.
His response was “Shoot twice and go home, your Majesty”.

It’s kinda weird seeing a mix between German ww2 style equipment and uniform with western vehicles, Swiss army looks like it the Germans were allied to the western powers in ww2
The Swiss sold the Germans a lot of weapons during ww2. Swiss manufacturing is high quality. I believe oerlikons are still used on some US navy ships

The good thing about is, military service is mandatory!
The Video is called "Werhafte Schweiz" - it was an impressive piece back to the Landesausstellung 1964 i think. Impressive because resolution, storytelling, shot-type, coloring etc are not bad for swiss in 1964...

Loved seeing the De Havilland Venoms in action, such a striking aircraft.
And those Hunter's!

@@MikeHuntGenius That’s really interesting. I didn’t know there were actual war-plans for a German or Soviet invasion of Switzerland.
@@conferencecaller8111 there were. Switzerlands best player was the all seeing general Guisan who made a defense that was just perfect for the country. His defense lines took advantage of the terrain and basically made tge southern part of Switzerland a giant lawn protected by mountains and tank traps.

That's true, but there are several other factors too
I swear this the most quaint military fan video. I don't know whether to clap or see if I can buy their military, surplus.
It’s pretty cheap. Honestly besides the camo colors you’re probably better off with German stuff. It’s actually pretty comfy. The Swiss stuff you really have to break in tho. I use the pants I have for hunting and I use the jacket in the garden until I break it in enough for hunting.

Switzerland has many formidable weapons, but by far among the most terrifying and ubiquitous are the vacuum cleaner, the soap pail, the mop, the waste bin, and the scrubbing brush...
So... be aware...

Nobody invades Switzerland. Not even nobody.
