Hey GlamFam! So one of the primary issues I notice with people trusting stylists is that communication is not always clear, I find that often, stylists are in a rush to make the hair look healthy. Building trust is super important when it comes down to haircare! Many of my clients trust me to take exactly what is needed due to clear communication and established trust. They know that if it’s their goal to grow their hair out, I’m here for the long haul!
My hope is that other stylists see this video and start thinking about establishing trust, rather than just cutting hair, trust creates life long clients!

I love this answer. When stylists cut more than you want you don't want to go to them again. You feel violated. And they just want to say they were getting rid of the unhealthy hair.
Sometimes they just cut you short cause it's less product, less time and more money. Plus, if it's shorter and only they can achieve that style it's a win for them.

I'm sorry, maybe I am just oblivious, but how does a shorter cut equal less time? Or since when do stylists charge based on the length of the hair they took off? Statement that they use less of finishing products on shorter styles is technically true but the difference is basically negligible to their bottom line. Not to mention, salon is usually the one carrying and paying for the product used at they establishment not hairdressers individually. Unless you're Beyonce and have a freelancer on location of course.

This is really the ONLY reason I'm afraid to go to a stylist. Well, that and the fact that many stylists feel the need to straighten your hair to cut it. I have 4b/4c hair with 4a at the nape. Different parts of my hair has different levels of shrinkage. Cutting my hair in a straight state just doesn't make sense to me. How is it going to look when it all shrinks up again. I know a curly haired woman that got an uneven chop because of that.
Especially considering I dont even wear it straight. I usually do the heatless blowout look. I never put heat on my hair. They're not about to mess up all of my hard work! Lol But I'm in desperate need of a shape. I can trim my hair on my own but I'm afraid they're going to take off too much just to shape it.

I read on a forum once about this girl who had pretty badly damaged hair. Once she realized this and got more into hair care, she couldn't bring herself to get all the damage cut off. So, I think every couple weeks or so, she would just do a dusting on herself. Never went to a salon or anything. She took care of hair and just maintained the length until, slowly, the damage was trimmed away.
Of course, I don't know if this would work for you. She had (relatively) straight hair, and I admittedly don't know much about wavy or curly hair if that's what you have. You do what you feel is best for you ☺️

Dion told me I had 6 inches of damaged hair and I told her to cut it off and whatever else she needs to do. When she was done it was basically three inches past my ear that she cut off. The hair grew back ever so beautifully and full due to her treatments and recommendations that I followed. Although I did not keep my hair long but when it was long, Dion had me as the TALK of downtown Chicago....Haha! That hair was blowing in the wind and had plenty of Sheen! Haha! I SUBSCRIBED!! Asking does build trust. The fact that you include me shows respect, therefore trust. Over 76 years the stylist that ask were given permission to trim where they thought best, I was pleased & my hair stayed healthy. Those other unfortunate times caused tears, no tip, and I never returned.
    You earned my respect. 👍👏

I'm so glad you said that, Linwood. Old school stylist (not all cause I haven't been around all) the ones I've been around don't listen to their customer. I've heard, "I'm the professional and I tell them what's best for their hair". I walked away, smh, saying you are about to lose that one.
    Thanks for sharing ☺️

I so appreciate you sharing this because I've seen people go to get the ends trimmed and lose so much hair they were hesitant to go back. I personally had a stylist not take off enough because she was used to seeing angry clients when others took too much off. I really appreciate being asked because trust means everything when it comes to hair. I always appreciate your videos.

Ugggh, I wish I could find a stylist like this. I’ve been afraid of going to the salon for years because I’ve had so many negative experiences of people just doing what they want to my hair instead of doing what I asked for.
I do everything myself now - trims, blowouts, I even used to relax my own hair (until I melted it off… oops.) And even though my hair probably looks hella jankey, I feel at least if it’s going to be botched I might as well save my coins and botch it myself.

THANK YOU!! I went into the salon a few months after I cut my own hair. I cut it short but that sh*t was even. It was a square and I wanted length. I went in for hair extensions. They recommended against it and instead instead cut my hair even shorter to give it a 'shape.' When I tell you it is so uneven and choppy!! I cannot wear my hair down. What they did to my hair is a legit crime and this cut should be illegal. Can't wait for it to grow out.

I really respect and appreciate you for pointing out the importance of collaborating with the client to find out what they want before you chop chop. My last stylist would just do whatever she wanted ... hence the reason she is no longer my stylist. Linwood, your approach works better for people like me

Thank you so much for this! I have had stylists cut 2-3 inches off my hair when I asked for a trim without asking me if it was okay. Every time I have ever stopped going to a stylist, it is because they did something to my hair without my permission. I had one lady burn my hair out because she didn't listen when I told her I only relaxed my roots. She relaxed my hair from root to tip. Needless to say, my hair fell out in handfuls.....

Very true about building trust with the client! When I was 14, I started going to a stylist who was a friend of the family because she did my older sister and my moms hair. She told me I had breakage (about the size of a quarter) and that she would have to cut my hair. Y'all, this lady cut my shoulder length hair into a Fantasia style pixie cut! Never went back to her and have NEVER allowed anyone to cut/trim my hair again and that was 15 years ago.

You’re a wise Man, I have had trouble trusting stylists every since I was a teenager when I went into the shop my hair was on the middle of my back and left with it barely touching my shoulders , it grew back fast but now I would need to pray not to lay holy hands LOL 🤣😂🤣

Wow! As someone who has to sit in that chair, THANK YOU! Thank you for letting me know I have some say in my cut! 😂 I’m not trying to go into shock. I had a stylist before ‘rona and she would tell me straight “I know where I need to cut, but I don’t want you to go into shock, so I’m only gonna take this much” that trust is very important

I've been going to various saloons from 1989-2002. Not one of them listened to me.
So I started my own saloon in my own bathroom, and I only got 1 client for the last 19 years.
He is really happy at the end of every session. He seems nice.

My hair after COVID 2022. I was washing it myself, DIYS braids, no added hair, and Bandu twistouts, on my obsessively curly, kinky hair. I got the big chop, and moved on, but you are so smart, and know to meet us where we are. Of course, providing educating options.
