Making a full-scale game is certainly an undertaking. Just remember that you can always iterate, but don't lose sight of the goal. Even if you restart it entirely, you still have everything you've learned as a head start up the mountain. Good luck, Farket :)

Farket became a box of surprises after quitting Sons of The Forest forever, he's on his character development arc now, first Minecraft, then making a game.
Anyway, you'll have my full support, if it makes you happy and it's practically free, I see no reason not to.

Professional game dev here. I've been shipping games since 1996. There is a TON of stuff to know: Gameplay, UI, Physics, Rendering, Networking.
    1. Use an engine (UE, Unity, Godot, etc.)
    2. Prototype! If a game with placeholder art isn't fun, then a game with final art won't be either.
    3. Keep the focus small
    4. Iterate, Iterate, Iterate.
    5. Polish, polish, polish.
Good luck! Feel free to reach out to me if you want more free game dev tips.

Huge undertaking big fella, good luck. I've been solo developing an open-world, bushcraft survival game for 3 years now in UE and I'm only just starting to think about making the teaser trailer and doing the reveal. 8-18hrs work minimum every day for 3 years, if you can get others on board to help speed things up I'd recommend it. So on a day I do my actual job i'll only get 8-10 hours or so in but on a day when im not working I usually do 16-18 hours. When I first started I was stuck in a covid lockdown so was doing 20 hours a day for a few months while I was learning UE. It was like a fever dream.

This is a really similar situation that happened to me when sons of the forest came out. I built so many insane expectations for the game that made it a huge let down. Because I had this very specific vision for how I wanted Sons of the Forest to be, I wanted to learn game dev so I could literally do it myself (Quickly learning it's harder than it looks). I picked up unreal engine because it had a quick learning curve and very high ceiling with programming and now I've been hooked for over a year and recently started my first actual game project. I hope you come to love it as much as I do :)

Props to you! Never in a million years would I have even considered the possibility of you choosing to game dev, but either way making a game in 1 year is hard but possible. If you keep you'r current pace, you will succeed as long as the game isn't too large. If you were to make game dev video's, 100% I would watch them :)

hey Farket, i’m doing the same thing! Teaching myself how to make video games with zero experience, and i can totally relate to the prototype games and the understanding of code language! This is such an exciting thing to hear, since i’ve been watching you for a while- If you start a patreon, i will absolutely support you there, it seems like a good way to stay afloat financially while devoting your time to learning a game engine

This is a great idea! You are a smart & capable man, I think you will do great at this! I play Ark, never got into Sons of Forest, I like Ark cause you have a mixture of building, animals/breeding and PVP. I will be interested in seeing what you come up with. Looking forward to this.

I’m open to see a series of what you learn every 2 weeks? What mechanics you’re learning at the moment, what you want to master etc.

Good luck, Farket! Maybe drop some videos about your journey. It will be fun for us and it will keep the money coming in.

im glad you actually made change farket rather than putting yourself through mental hell. most youtubers wouldn’t change and just deal with it. which eventually would lead to a downfall. you made the right choice.

Hell yeah brother! Who better to create a game than it's loyal users! I hope it's a survival game because I think Farket likes survival games and I'm a huge PVE fan and I'd love to buy/test anything you make man. Good luck and don't stop when you hit some walls, bust through them bastards and forge on!
