Carl -- thank you for all you do. You reinforce positive self esteem, knowledge, joy, and tolerance. You've saved me more than once. I wish you well, and hope you have a breakthrough in research and save humanity and earn a Nobel prize.
Welcome to Part 1 of the Dawn of Jank! This world was imitating the period near the end of Mario Maker 1 where all the glitches were found and everything devolved into a janky mess. Stay tuned next time for Part 2 of Dawn of Jank, including the most broken 3D World level ever made, and a VERY happy bully enemy. Thanks for everyone's continued support!
I also miss the Weird Mushroom for the unique physics and the Costume Mushrooms for the storytelling. (Like, they could still make the Link costume work with the power-up despite the Master Sword being there by using the LttP Link instead. They used 16-bit sprites for other characters, like Sonic, so it would still work!)
I absolutely love the science compilation from 44:00 to the end. Like, that is what happens when you get a science-Yoshi mind and let them play with jank physics. It's so fun to see. I wouldn't have the patience for it, so seeing the quick cuts was SO interesting and much appreciated.
I was JUST about to comment on that! I especially love the visible progression through the five stages of jank confusion from 43:55 to 44:40. “This game makes no sense,” indeed.
I've been watching this channel religiously for a couple of years. It's been one of my main sources of happiness and it greatly helped me get through everything. Thank you Carl and editor :')
The way any cannon flying machine works is because each cannon is attached to another in such a way that the game thinks theyre all holding each other up
30:30 These are my favorite types of trolls, up there with the likes of things emerging out of nowhere really quickly and then going away flashing you for a second, and ones that either have you troll yourself or trick your brain like if there's a coin path on the other side of the screen and you hold that direction and go into a pipe there's just something so funny about jumping somewhere, disappearing and then emerging somewhere else and falling into your death, what made it extra spicy was the fact you fell for it after so many attempts, and the fact it was out of sight, no one would ever have thought to check up there, it was by complete mistake and wasn't expecting that. I love this content, this has to be the best project ever created, i'm just simply loving it!!
Did you know: on the current version of ChatGPT, asking it "What weighs more, 2 pounds of feathers or 1 pound of bricks?" will cause it to confidently insist that both weigh the same!
I love the troll at 24:40 so much. As soon as I saw that black launcher with the pit behind it I could tell that the pow was gonna jank right through it, keeping it from blowing up and trolling the heck out of Carl. What I *didn't* expect was the first pow to hit the red launcher, allowing it to actually explode and causing further jank to kill an unsuspecting Carl. Seeing as the first pow throw was safe, even knowing full well that it's possible to toss pows through launchers, that first pow makes it look like the second throw would be safe and I'd've absolutely gotten bodied. Doesn't matter how much you think about it when they're five steps ahead. 10/10
As I was watching the code being entered, I was actually thinking something like "there's no way there'd be actual plot behind this one, it's probably some short stupid thing along the lines of...oh hey, there we go."
My schedule doesn't allow for me to watch streams, but I assume that you've finished the world at this point. So I'd like to inform you, that as the principal investor, website owner, & creator of the discord server: 95% of this was created by Stevo. A few people like Defender, PsyCrow & (surprisingly) Jbizzle did contribute a bit. But mostly everyone who signed on were just compensated for the usage of their names. This is the true troll of this project :) I'm so happy it worked out so well & that you enjoyed it.
instead of banning glitch levels Nintendo should have just added a tag for levels that have glitches. If you use glitches and DO NOT use the tag then level is banned. If you do use the tag those levels won't show up in any of the regular modes, but the levels dont get banned and players can still search for and play them.
Great video carl! I really like this series, glad you started it. I never thought I'd like super mario all that much until I stumbled upon your channel years ago xD Keep up the great work :D
Imagine there's a black hole It's easy with a claw No floor below us Above us, clown cars Imagine all the peepo Glitchin' for today Ah Imagine there's a slope here It isn't hard in MM2 Something to put a Thwomp in And a launcher, too Imagine all the peepo Glitchin' Larl to pieces You Nintendo may go and try to ban me But I'm not the only troll One day they'll lay off the dev team And the dawn of jank will unfold Imagine a hyperspeed setup I wonder if you can No need for grease or plungers An ELB, oh man! 11:57 I think the cannons don't fire all at the same time because of spawn order, and the fact that each is supposed to be on their own timer, not a global timer. Other than that, almost spitting my drink at the screen as usual from the hilarity, Larl. Please keep us laughing for a long, long time. 💛
The experimentation in the end reminds me of physics from early in the book Three body problem. Physics just stopped making sense (for reasons which makes sense, but I won't spoil), and it felt a lot like this reading it. Making changes, changes happening but never what you thought or expected 😂
7:15 I have adhd and sometimes find it really hard to read dense and long winded documents. I find that having a general summary of what I’m about to read really helps me get a fuller picture and start thinking about it on a deeper level. I find that chatgpt can be really useful for summarizing things like this.
Huh. I saw the breakable block above CP1 in Winter Blunderland and was sure there was gonna be a stealth offscreen CP2 like in Symptoms of Stupidity. And each time you fell down a one-tile hole after that, I watched the point meter, but it never jumped 2000 points. Of course, the end WAS very SoS-like in another way - “do what I’ve been training you not to do to win”.
7:54 With all good jank, comes great cheese. 21:54 After calling the pit disrespectful Carl falls for the same thing. xD 32:48 Music timing there was perfect.
I love how the theme of this world implies that the devs held themselves back from using glitches in the previous worlds when we all know this isn't true. xD
9:43 Idea for a boss fight: You have a supply of POWs at your disposal. Spike balls are raining down (possibly approaching on tracks so you have a chance to see them coming) and/or popping out of pipes (which could be blocked then not blocked by contraptions to stagger and vary the pattern. You have to protect the floor for some reason.... like a powerup that is going to slide through on a magical journey to hit a note block to get you a key.... Or some-sort of ending like that ;) I want to see this now!!!! =D
Great troll series made even greater by a man who refuses to learn from past mistakes. Or perhaps, rather, insists that he retry them time and again for that one cathartic moment when banging your head against a brick wall pays off.
It’s crazy that MM2 is getting close to the age Mario Maker 1 was when MM2 came out! Maybe 3 isn’t too far on the horizon… Edit: Agreed that 2 is aging like fine wine, though ;)
13:45 A solid prediction =) Nice Job. They gave alot of opportunity for people to realize that maybe they should stand on that spot ....maybe.... TOO much opportunity =)
👍 That thumbnail of Carl's face looking down reminds me of the moon in the legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask. Carl you can make nice faces...and evil looking ones. 😆
39:49 My guess is that each element is dependent on what it's sitting on. First, the launcher depends on the left cannon, then the left cannon (once dependent on the ice block) depends on the right cannon as it slides in, but the right cannon now depends on the launcher which causes a recursion. Now any sort of push from an outside force causes hitbox jank.
Does Carl ever expand on his 'AI stealing art might not be a problem' take? I'd like to hear him out on it. (As a professional musician who works with a bunch of other freelance artists, I worry this is a rare instance of Carl speaking on something he isn't an expert at in a way that might be harmful misinformation. =/ )
But does that make it worse? Like the level designer put that there just for Carl to see it and think "I'll never fall for this troll," which then would make every time he falls into the same type of pit that much more embarrassing because he established that this troll would not fool him. Of course the level designers know Carl and know his thought process, so I think it was intentional to make him eat his words. But it gets better! Because in the end, you HAVE to fall into the pit to win. So at the start they set up an obvious pit that the player confidently avoids, thinking they would never fall for that. Then as the level continues, the player falls into pit after pit, and probably feels embarrassed or frustrated that they kept falling for the obvious troll. In the end though, they enter a screen where a snowball knocks the player right to the edge of the pit, and suddenly, the player things they somehow saved themselves from falling victim to the troll that got them over and over again, the one that they saw coming at the start and still kept falling (literally) for. And with that mindset, the player walks away from the ledge, and learns that they not only missed out on the goal, but they were CP1'd. I know that is a lot to read and an exhaustive response to a joke, but I must say, this is some impressive psychological trolling. And writing that out really made me appreciate the art in it.

I love how the warmup level was all an elaborate setup for an offscreen Thwomp troll.
Yeah the ending of that was perfect
It's Mario Maker 2. You never truly leave garbo land.
And in the same vein, you never truly leave the world of Jank either
It was always about the garbo land within us 😌
Wise words, indeed 🤔
Garbo land is a land on Jank world
The question is, are there any others?

36:23 Who said the Banned Wagon Team aren't *benevolen't* >:P
I am extremely excited for that 3D world disaster jank 👀 👀
Looking forward to that!
The one SMM1 mechanic I as a viewer miss the most are the stackable pipes. The utter magic and jank that would put Carl's brain through was exquisite.
20:00 Winter Blunderland is one of the best "running gag" levels I've ever seen. The comedic timing is superb.

Fine, I’ll confess. The troll at 6:03 was my one contribution to the world, sorry everyone. :p
The troll was hilarious
What do you mean? It was obviously Stevo! Even if he had no involvement, it’s still his fault!
Honestly, that mini-pipe level is one of my favorite levels! It makes me realize how cool this game can be
I love that Carl just blames Stevo for everything no matter what.
But of course!
What else is Carl meant to do?
I love how often he's right!🤣
Stevo often deserves the blame LMAO

The surprise around 26:00 was so genuine.
I have never heard Carl enter self-preservation mode with such aggravation
I hope that someday I find something I love as much as Carl loves off screen seesaw trolls.
You can feel them all sweating when Carl starts messing around with the pipe teleport level
As I was watching the code being entered, I was actually thinking something like "there's no way there'd be actual plot behind this one, it's probably some short stupid thing along the lines of...oh hey, there we go."

To Carl's credit, he did not go into that pit. He went into every other pit, but not that specific one.

I know that is a lot to read and an exhaustive response to a joke, but I must say, this is some impressive psychological trolling. And writing that out really made me appreciate the art in it.
3:49 Carl has the laugh of Lego Batman
Nintendo gonna release new game with this “glitch” as a intended way to pass through pipes in the future
Mario maker 2 is "aging like fine wine" the same way that fine wine is easily ruined when mishandled.

Carl's fake laugh sounds like he is slowly losing his mind
"AI confidently says wrong answers." that's what humans do too.
