39:00 Ironic that you mentioned this, had a very similar problem. I was at my 2nd year of university had this very strict professor in a maths class. 2nd month in and my mind was not in the right place. To give some context: I was suffering through Crohn's disease without yet knowing I had it at the moment, I had a surgery 5 months prior and I wasn't getting any better and the doctors were saying "everything was fine" but just kept feeling worse. It would be 2 months later that I would find another place to do some tests on what I had.
Back to the professor, he had given us an exercise to complete in class and I just couldn't figure it out, so I asked him a question about it. He responded "With that line of thinking, you're just better off going back to middle school". I really liked maths until this, which is really a shame.

Your story about math reminded me of my undergrad math minor. All the senior students were taking "probability" to finish off their minor before graduation, and none of us had taken math (or even the precursor "intro to probability and stats") in almost 2 years. The professor would ask us the most basic probability questions, but none of us knew anything, so we never answered. After a few days of this, he got so mad he swore and stormed out of the class. All of us were in shock and sat there for a while. He eventually came back and started back at the beginning, and we actually learned something and we could actually answer his questions 🙂

Interestingly, I've had a teacher in middle school who would shout at us for getting answers wrong/not doing hw, but it pushed me to do better. I would prioritize her assignments and tried very hard to teach myself/pay more attention in her class. However, the atmosphere was pretty much dead every time you entered her classroom and everyone was too scared to ask questions and it was generally an awful experience. If this is your teaching style, I would recommend not doing that.
Thinking back on it now, she had the Karen haircut and everything, but we didn't have that term back then.

I asked it about games I thought was interesting like MM2, and it knew a lot about troll levels and could help come up with ideas for levels. I asked about MM2 streamers and it said CarlSagan42 and I thought it was really neat. I asked it to play games, and it said it couldn’t just join me in a multiplayer game, so I tried to kinda play dnd. Carl's story of his horrible math teacher ruining a subject hits home for me, except high school chemistry.
In my case, the guy wasn't an outright asshole; just old-fashioned strict. Except during one of the first classes, I was a bit behind and he asked me a question. I didn't know it. Whatever, life goes on. Except I became his favorite student to ask questions of and it was plain embarrassing. Except instead of, you know, me learning the material and catching up, teen me just felt demotivated and like the subject was just magic in a flask I wouldn't need for the rest of my life, so I just abused the rostering schedule for my school that had this perverse habit (for me) of starting the day off with his class for at least one day a week for like four years straight.. and that was with new quarterly new rosters. I really learned the wrong lesson in that class and I nearly paid the price for it (I managed to get my class average literally one hundredth of a point above having to redo all classes of one whole year), but all in all, the guy managed to completely demotivate me. In hindsight, I am sure he was just trying to motivate me, but it accomplished the opposite thing entirely. I can only wonder whether, if after the first few weeks of the class, or even just the first year, he'd just taken me aside, asked what was going on and offered earnest help. The concept of catching up and really mastering the material just seemed too overwhelming for me back then, and barely muddling through was my way of coping.
I was a shit student and that was totally on me, but dear god, you don't need to have a pedagogy degree to realize when you are approaching a kid wrong.

~ 38:00 About math, I haven't been the biggest fan of math either, but a while ago I found this channel on RUclips you may have seen or heard of called Numberphile. It's not a learning course, but it has a lot of very smart people as guests explaining fun and interesting mathematical phenomena/problems. I think you might enjoy it and maybe learn a few things here and there. 🙂

On the topic of ChatGPT, all tools can be used for both good and evil, but not all tools have equal amounts of good and evil uses. There's a video of a guy using ChatGPT to code a Flappy Bird game, using only code it generated. It wrote and fixed the code, then wrote code based on suggestions from the person. This can be incredibly useful, as it would allow people to multitask more effectively when creating something, like a program that would allow the user to sort their email box or something. But on the flip side, if someone chooses to disregard basic principle and allow the AI to do whatever the user wanted, it would mean someone with little to no coding experience to ask it to write a virus or something. Right now is the worst AI will ever be at present, and with AI becoming more and more prevalent, and even some being free to use, the chances that a malicious actor creates "Hacker AI" or whatever only increases. And as people said with the Flipper Zero (A tool that could do things like change a gas stations advertised price on their sign), the existence of that tool made people aware of the dangers and that we need to protect ourselves from things like this. But it's slowly becoming harder and harder to do that as the amount of and level of protection needed is increasing.

Weird how people talk about hypotheticals when we already have the data, millions of people use chatGPT everyday, how many accidents have you seen where it was involved? I'm sure it wasn't more than a few, do you really think a few indicents are more harmful than the help it gives millions of people?
You know, I'm starting to realize why humans are so adverse to change, whenever something new happens, the potential benefits get dismissed, and the potential dangers magnified
Most people aren't assholes, society depends on that fact, most people have tools in their houses that can be used to kill people, but oh surprise, that almost never happens, I wonder why?
This is the same, most people aren't going to be creating malware even if they had the opportunity, not to mention that if malware can be created completely autonomously, security solutions most definitely would too, though I wouldn't worry about that for now, malware is very hard to create.

"the chances that a malicious actor creates "Hacker AI" or whatever only increases"
That's not an in the future thing, that just requires access to less ethical AI builds without guardrails added on for public use. Earlier this year Indigo/Chapters, the biggest bookstore chain in Canada got hacked and it was attributed to a worm written by AI. They didn't get customer banking info but employees had to be given identity theft insurance after not paying the ransom and the site had to be rebuilt before it could be brought back up.

sad to hear about your experience in maths carl. as someone who has loved the subject ever since i was a kid, i strongly feel like it's important for teachers to be receptive to questions and help their students to experience the joy of learning. i've done some teaching myself (though in physics) and hope to do a lot more and potentially get people interested in the subjects that have given me so much excitement over the years and attitudes like that of that teacher you had frustrate me immensely. i always tell my students there is no such thing as a bad question and i'm happy to do my best to answer any question they have no matter how basic or how advanced it is!
if ever you want to have some recommendations for readings on whatever subfield of mathematics i am happy to oblige :)

38:38 I also had a teacher like that, for a class about binary math and proofs (stuff like "if A then B" == " 'not A' or B"). The teacher gave us a question and asked one of us to answer it, I tried to answer it... did one small mistake, she spent the next 15 minutes lecturing me. Later classes, she was wondering why no one would try to answer her questions anymore.
Also, both homeworks and exams were super poorly done. One of the homework questions, we had to prove a statement, my proof was technically right but not as elegant as the intended answer. My teacher just put a giant X and gave 0 points. The exams were also choice-answer form, despite that the most important thing you should be learning in this class is how to work your proofs.
Soooo I barely passed that course, and it's the only low grade I got throughout all my time at the university (The second lowest grade I got is B+, and that was for an actually difficult course). I also completely struggled to follow proofs from later courses, since I have no idea what parts I didn't learn correctly.
