  • On 4th August 2010 in Slateford - a quiet, affluent Edinburgh suburb - emergency services were called to a home of California-born Theresa Riggi after reports of a gas explosion. What initially seemed to be a devastating tragedy, soon became something far more sinister. Travelling to Edinburgh, former Detective Chief Inspector with the Metropolitan Police Jackie Malton sets out to explore rare case of filicide - when a parent murders their own children.

    Only 16 years for killing three children? “If I can’t have them, you can’t either” doesn’t justify diminished responsibility.

      Uhhh, yup! In Britain!, "this is the law!" Pretty much the same, in Canada, Australia, & other the common wealth countries, as it leaves room for "rehabilitation." Its the bedrock of our system. Unlike the U.S. for eg, whose system is based on "retribution."..💁🏻‍♀️

      @KrisCorby-iv8dg The problem is that no concern is given to offenders that can’t be rehabilitated. People should not be allowed out after multiple repeat crimes, or a pattern of crimes that indicate a “brain change”.

      One wife was finalllllyy leaving a long and abusive marriage and he called her over to the house to go over some business and there twin daughters were there and after a few minutes of being there she realized he killed them both and told her he wanted her to see.

    When I was about 6, I lost a friend from my church in similar circumstances. His dad was about to lose custody in favor of the mom (probably because he was an abusive nightmare of a person), so he killed my friend and his sister. It really shook my parents and the other adults at church, even if I was too young to fully understand at the time. Some people should never be parents.

    • @GummerHummerQueen
      @GummerHummerQueen 25 дней назад +8

      True, tho I don't remember anyone saying she was having psychosis rather than saying the same as you. She died in the mental facility so at least she doesn't get to live either.
      A report into Riggi's mental state identified narcissistic, paranoid and hysterical personality disorders. Maybe the other 2 disorders are what caused the diminished responsibility call. Though a person with those any disorder or none at all can have a psychosis episode

    The trauma experienced by the different investigators on this case reminds me of the dreadful effects of The Toybox Torture Case in Arizona. (the defendant was also a murderer, but not enough evidence was found to convict him of those crimes) A seasoned FBI agent was assigned the gruesome task of cataloguing all of the torture devices and instruments in the box. (The Toybox was a large soundproofed cube trailer kept on the property next to the house) It took her four days to complete this harrowing assignment. When she had finished, she walked out of the box, unholstered her service revolver and shot herself in the head.
    Too often we forget the horrific effects that investigating crimes of this nature have on those tasked to investigate them.

    • @-HeyLyd-

      For parents who are like this, their "love" of their children is not selfless; it's all about how the children reflect on themselves and is more akin to a feeling of ownership. True parental love could never even conceive of killing one's child, but these children only meant so much to her _because_ they were hers; she did not value them as separate individuals from herself.

    The stark reality of a parent committing such an act against their own children is indeed harrowing and difficult to comprehend. Labeling such actions as evil reflects the profound shock and outrage that communities feel when faced with such unthinkable acts. It emphasizes the need for the justice system to not only administer appropriate penalties but also to thoroughly investigate the circumstances that lead to such tragedies, ensuring that there is no excuse or justification that overshadows the severity of the crime.

    Such a sad tragedy, my sincerest condolences to the Father family and community. People stop using your children as pawns. Ok, the marriage didn't work, but if you love your children, share them with your ex. Spouse or Partner. They don't deserve to be hurt or killed because you're selfish and you want to hurt your ex. When I was growing up, there were children and their parents had a bad break up . That selfish mentality came up. "I can't have them. You can't, too." Their father set the house on fire, leaving the children to survive with 3rd degree burns. Children can be cruel calling them Crispy Critters or Freddy Kruger's kids
    Luckily, they were happy at times to come out and play. Parents are supposed to love care support and trust their children as they are growing up. Her sentence was light. RIP angels, I wished I could have helped you all.

    Sad story and I am sorry about it. The fact is this happens to animals every day in animal agriculture too. They are torn away from their family members (mothers etc), tortured in how they are raised and then brutally killed. It is sadistic. You can see what happens if you look up the organization "Mercy For Animals". We must concern ourselves with all life... human and animal or it is speciesist and wrong. We must have compassion and kindness to everyone. Animals are someone too and they matter just like humans. ❤

      This is why buying local meat is so important. We're meant to eat animals. Just like every other carnivore/omnivore in the world. I agree that it's quite cruel in many instances. Most carnivorous animals do not care about the feelings of their prey. Often eating them alive while they struggle.😬 Life isn't always pretty!

    Why did she jump by the window after stabbing herself ? What it means on a psychological pov ? I presume that she was at the origin of the gas explosion. I ´m French probably I don’t understand everything .

    My impression from the thumbnail photo is that they were spirited children. Mom looks as if she's ready to chuck the lot out the window.

      The children were possessions, not small humans with feelings of their own.

    seems like extended suicide to me
    very very sad circumstances
    dont know the father at all, but why is he only portraied as the victim. . .did he take care of his 3 children or was the heavy load all on theresa?
    theresa moved for her husbands job, did i get this wright?she was the caretaker i suppose. . .and he had his job. . .
    he left and wanted to take her content of life with him. . just speculating. . .
    i m convinced she wanted to die when she jumped off that balcony
    and i really dont believe she died of "natural causes"

    How inconsiderate for this show hostess to record the discussion of the case while driving the car! She should be focusing on driving!

    • @Emiliapocalypse
      @Emiliapocalypse 24 дня назад +3

      She’s probably not really driving. When they do this in movies and tv shows they’re usually only pretending to drive while being hauled on a low trailer and filmed in such a way that you can’t tell. And usually they’re cut with shots of the outside of the car with person actually driving (as is done here) so it looks like they’re the same sequence of events. But it’s movie magic

    Medusa the Greek myth killed her children to punish their father.

      It was Medea (medusa had a head full of snakes). Medea fell in love with Jason, helped him by magic to his goal, and fled her homeland to return to Greece with him. Later, when Jason deserted her, she took her revenge by murdering their two sons.

      @martinasikk6162 I think they mean after she healed from all that. Usually people that commit this heinous crimes end up being interviewed at some point in their lives to give their point of view.
