Im one of those 2nd generation Irish kids that grew up in the UK, I had to go to the shops with my Mother to translate, long time ago. I speak a couple of european languages, Sometimes the English find the use of Irish English a bit... odd. I have often tried to explain it this way. The Irish speak English like the French speak French, ie, It is far more poetic and descriptive than standard English and stems from the Irish language." The car was not happy to start" made me smile. I get back when I can and head out west, drop into a pub or the like in the hope of bumping into some old timer, just to hear the language of my childhood. Great videos, good luck.

Hi there, one of the things that is both frustrating and wonderful at the same time about learning Irish is having to think about and remembering different ways of saying the same thing.
Mar shampla..."Keep your phone close by" literally translated is "Keep your phone under your arm"!
Every language has "turns of phrase" and I find it fascinating but difficult as I have never learned another language before (and I'm 62!!)

You don't have to learn all the ways of saying something as that wouldn't be practical, just focus on one or two. It's no different in English.

Thanks Dane. I suppose the difference in usage depends on what part of the country you`re in.
