It's all about the music! I know. Famoudou and Mamady are all about music. Over the many years, I have gotten to know them both very well. Mamady loves working with music and creating new songs, rhythms and arrangements and solo phrases as well as complete pieces. He also loves playing live music more than just about anyone I know.
Famoudou Konaté loves music so much. He lives, eats and sleeps it. If you can find some old clips or any clips of Famoudou video, check it out. He lives in music!
Mamady Keita has done for the popularity of the djembe more than anyone in modern times. His unrelenting approach to teaching students around the world has inspired millions of players starting and learning djembe. Mamady Keita's life is for the djembe. Mamady's soul is for the djembe. Respect.

Comparing drummers is like comparing whose heart beats faster.
Mamady and Famoudou are the patriarchs of the djembe tradition.
However, they are seniors now, and their hands aren't what they used to be...
However, he is still a great player and a treasure of knowledge about djembe/doun culture.
It's cool. You guys say what you think. There's stuff you are not seeing, hearing or feeling and that is respect, history and knowledge. And I really do have hope for the younger generation but, not from what I see here. First, Bolo would never think or say such a thing about himself or Mamady. It is NOT a competition. We call it music and communal music at that. He knows something you do not. And he has respect for his Masters and peers. If you knew your history, you'd be ashamed of yourselves.

I observe people acting as spoiled children in and around the "Djembe World", do yourself a favor and grow up and start acting like an adult. Djembe is an art form, stop comparing these great artists to who they were or who you want them to be. They have given us so much, what have you done? Stop projecting your anger and take responsibility for your own creativity and do something beautiful, you have the power!
I don't understand why you say people are comparing. Mamady Keita is a master drummer 10 years younger than Master Famoudou. Famoudou is a village and ballet drummer. They are not comparable besides that they both play djembe. Famouodu is also a master sangba player. If I find some video I have I will post.

+phoenix lights I could write it out or show it to you. It's not that hard (obviously). Realize that it is like a short echauffement with some rolls that come twice before it. Take a close look at which hand starts the roll. And remember, Mamady rolls from his left! Many djembe drummers in the past have been left handed. I hope that helps.
"Many djembe drummers in the past have been left handed" what do you mean by that? You mean they preferred to start playing phrases with their left hands? I once got a tip from an advanced drummer to do so.
hate to bother you but if you could some how write it out that would be great!
They went both ways. Over my 35 years playing djembe, I have met a good 35% or more who were left handed! Some play left and some play RH.
If you give me a mail adress, I write it down for you. It starts just after the third beat and if you sing the line, it goes like this: .kukraku Krakukata Katakata Katakata Kakukraku Kraku. (Ku: Tone, Kra: Fla slap, Ka and Ta: Slap). Every capital letter is a time beat. So it starts just after the 3rd beat and finishes on the 4th of the next cicle.

Better maybe yes maybe no. I have listen to this solo and i have to disagree with you. i dont know if you based your jugement on this clip alone.I dont know what is your back ground but this is grand master stuff. Who are we to understand all the subtility of ''countrepoint'' .I rather listen and learn from im then earing those young and crazy djembefolalé who think that fast playing is top and who put calf skins to sound higher instead of working their techniques. comment yes...judge no.
It still is not the village traditional drumming. It is ballet style or modern djembe playing.
love me some mamady but I am definitely a bolokada man lol ....mamady is technically perfect but bolokada has more spirit when he plays
I still don't know why you make it a competition. No one is competing! But thank for your Bolo comments. He is also younger. When Mamady was young he was a hard, fast, accurate, musical and monster player filled with intense energy. If you get a chance check out the Solos DVD from around 2001 where he plays 20 minute solos in respect to his teacher. Lesson is we will play differently as we are in our teens, in our 20's and 30's, 40's and 50's. and on. That's the way the body is. And we either quit or adapt.
