  • Nike's Air Max Plus is one of the most popular - and controversial - sneakers in the world. It has a cult following, but its association with criminals and troublemakers in Australia has seen the shoes being banned from some businesses. Subscribe to 'Grounded' » 7news.link/Grounded
Making its debut 1998, the Air Max Plus quickly became one of Nike’s most iconic shoes. Originally designed by then rookie Nike designer Sean McDowell, the Air Max plus was the first sneaker in Nike running to introduce Tuned Air technology. While this shoe has maintained success across the world, especially in Europe, for anyone living in Australia, the notoriety of the Air Max Plus is widespread.
Down under, the shoe is better known by it’s simple 2 letter name - TN’s. Many underground cultures in Australia adopted the TN for it’s bold, bright and distinct aesthetics. However, the shoes association with criminals, troublemakers and eshay has been rampant for many years.
But like any cult classic, there are die-hard collectors who have curated the finest and rarest pairs of TN’s to ever be released. On social media, there are communities dedicated to the TN’s from Instagram pages showing very aesthetic shots, to Facebook pages with a loyal community.
In this video, we speak to the man who designed the shoe - Sean McDowell, and meet some Australian collectors who devote their passion to the iconic shoe.

You boys should go into depth of the origins of australias modern culture of 'Eshays & Adlays' as its a culture that alot of us younger generations and previous have used to help identify ourselves in a positive way, as these newer generations have been taking the piss of the culture, without actually knowing the truth and importance of the meanings behind the words & culture; from friendships, to our dress codes, moral, and social belonging.
I know alot of people i grew up with from Australia that had been exposed to some unfortunate events and we had all felt outcast at some point of our lives, we had all been categorised as eshays & adlays, creating a society of likeminded individuals who can resonate with eachothers thoughts, feelings & characters.
Most people i see today rocking a pair of tns, are usually pretty full on people, as in they have been exposed to alot more touchy subjects and by wearing 'TNS' it helps identify like minded & culturally similar people amongst a huge variety of people.
These shoes, terms & labels have created a huge and widely connected culture that was always there in the background.
