  • Here is a comparison video on an older MM Mauldulator and 1 of John's New 1's. These units are basically an interface for HiFi equipment. They will give you a true broadcast audio without over modulating your signal. Hope this helps you out. Enjoy Stickman

Stickman, did a nice 1x4 for me. It's in mint condition and works fabulously. Thanks Stickman Rip

Good Video ! The reason why the R.E.A. monitor was reading somewhat lower than the apparent modulation level on the oscilloscope is due to the effect of positive carrier shift. This shows up as the AVERAGE power being higher with the heavy, steady-state asymmetry. In fact, you are actually running more average power (this is a DC shift). The R.E.A. monitor readjusts itself based on the carrier (average) level, and therefore since the carrier level is higher, the modulation readings, relative to the carrier level will be lower :-) Normally, in regular modulation (voice peaks, music, etc.) the steady state highly asymmetrical modulation is not present for a long enough period of time for the R.E.A. to re-adjust the carrier level (it takes several seconds for this to happen).
I personally run about 200% positive modulation on voice peaks in my own station. However, there is no carrier shift because the area under the curves formed by the positive modulation and the negative modulation is the same, resulting in a net-0 % carrier shift. This is accomplished using a negative peak limiter, in concert with the fact that the human voice has quite a bit of natural asymmetry when run through a low distortion, low phase shift modulator. If the audio is phased correctly, and the negative peak limiter is adjusted properly, you can achieve a LOT of positive modulation, while generating very little distortion in the process (changing an audio waveform ALWAYS introduces distortion, so doing as little waveform modification as possible is preferable).
Note, as pointed out in the video, the transmitter MUST be capable of this level of positive modulation, or things will sound quite bad (flattopping, etc.).
73 and catch you on the bands !!

How much info can fit in between the bandwidth without bleeding over?

Did you use the feedback pin connected to the output of the Darlington? If you did get that to work, you get about 1.5 volts more on the output for the same input voltage than you would if you just shorted it on the PCB. The tube emulation does not belong on that board, but more in your processing hardware. The new board just concentrates on asymmetry and getting on the carrier whatever frequencies you put in. That is another feature of this board. You are not limited by the filtering because there is none. You have more freedom, but more responsibility to get you audio right.

did you tell john the reason you was doing more watts is because your running 300% and can only get 200% in the old one..I'm sure you did just saying...great video

It's not flat topping because you are now running your finals at a higher voltage on your modulation peaks.
I would guess 29.5 minus 1.5 volts for 28 volts peak on the driver and final of the Cobra 29.
Are those stock finals peaking at 28 volts; or higher power ones.
How do the stock finals hold up under those conditions?
