People often praise Justin Hayward's singing, songwriting, guitar playing but Ray's songs are tremendous, timeless and memorable; one of the most beautiful singing voices in Pop/Rock. Rest In Peace and Rock, Ray.
The Moody Blues were the greatest rock band of the late 60's and early 70's. What talent, at every level of their individual instruments and vocal abilities. Especially Ray Davies, and his flute. That was special, and especially in this tune.
@@michaeltownshend4503 Well, 50 miles naked in a snowstorm would be a bit much for me, lol, but that flute solo was simply magnificent. Ray really rose to the occasion and hit it out the ballpark. May he RIP.
There were so many times I saw the Moodies I can't even count the number. But one concert Ray wasn't there. I thought he had died. But he just quit the band then some time later suffered cancer and he's in Heaven now playing his flute. RIP Ray you were a great part of the Moody Blues. Bless you!!!!
After hearing and admiring them for more than 40 years, I still cannot figure out how they manage to mix classical music and rock, kitsch and talent, being posh and revolutionary, ordinary and great, all at the same time. Thanks Ray.
To my ear, Ray's voice got better over the years. It got richer and deeper the older he got. I was blessed to see him and the rest of the Moodies years ago. Had front row seats to boot. And he did the very same performance. Absolutely amazing. One of my best memories.
Will Mr Thomas, you now have your drummer Graeme Edge with you again, and you someday can start playing excellent music afresh, when the rest of the band has finished their concert on earth. And unite with you for a endless tour.
I would go on grateful dead tour and to shows and see thousands of hippies and at all the moody shows through the 80s and 90s hardly any hippy looking people.why didn't they get it. I like the dead but the moody s really took me to that higher dimension. thanks Ray
Just an ordinary man playing the flute. But what a man. And whenever has a fluteplayer owned the stage quite like Ray Thomas. In a class of his own. And part of a group that were in a class of their own. I feel so sorry for people who have never listened to the Moody Blues. They are missing the experience of a lifetime.
love them all my life..the great.Ray RIP...a lot of cooncidences led me to know them because I am mexican and this is not really our thing...Bless Bill Hidelbauer, a pilot and cowboy who met my parents by accident amd recomended this album.
The Moody Blues have been a big part of my life eve since I can remember. This is the first I've known that Ray passed - I don't watch too much TV in my mountain hideout. I know the Moody's would not live forever, but I won't either. Now, with Ray gone I think that the Moody Blues will not be seen touring anymore. Miss you Ray, R.I.P. and thanks for a great long time.
Idk if they’ve performed shows since the the pandemic, but Ray left the band in 2003 and they performed plenty of shows afterwards. Obviously it wasn’t the same (even though they got another flautist).
Timothy L! What such a beautiful song. A lyric ! And the orchestra. Musicians ! And the singer voice ! Moody blues life ! Breathtaking also life in concert ! ThNk you all! 🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶👏👏👏👏👏🫢🫢🫢🫢⭐️⭐️⭐️💫💫💫🙏🙏🙏
Ray Thomas is dead No, no, he's outside looking in Ray Thomas is dead No, no, he's outside looking in He'll fly his astral plane Takes you trips around the bay Brings you back the same day Rest in Peace Ray - thank you for your music.
Never understood why this was not on the first/main Red Rocks video. The others were not at their best that night but Ray certainly was. He was often pushed aside a bit I think and it's always seemed to me that the Albert Hall version of this was criminally cut short, either in reality or by video editing. Always a show highlight. Miss those days - every two years around came another Moodies concert.
Simply the best rock band ever! 5 songwriters, four lead singers with distinctively different voices. Great musicians. Two different eras of success and rare longevity!!!
Great performance by Ray Thomas. Considerably better than even the great recorded performance from the album so long ago. This really spotlights Ray's classical skills and composure. Loved it. I will miss Ray. Rest in Peace to a wonderful mind. BTW. Keep in mind that Red Rocks is at over 6,435, feet above Denver, and playing a flute in thin air is a challenge to any wind instrument and vocalist. But Ray did a great job with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra in this special live performance. Thanks Ray. RIP.
RIP Ray...the Moody Blues created an entire genre of music...Trancendental Rock...and they pulled me from my Top 40 adolescence and into the world of cerebral rock...and the impetus of my love for the Progressive Rock bands that followed. So glad to see the Moodies in the RRHOF.
It was a true pleasure to see him do this live. The whole band was wonderful.with orchestra and great seats for us. That was an evening I will always remember.
This performance is all the more precious because of the recent death of Ray Thomas, Jan 2018. RIP Ray. You will be forever loved and missed. berrygirl1964.
This is SENSATIONAL!! Ray Thomas wrote most of the classic and quirky MB songs and this is sometimes forgotten..what a performance Ray gave that night..and one thing that also is apparent is the love and friendship all the guys in the band have for each other and for Ray....please check out all of the early 60's performances. Ray Thomas such a cool guy and dapper and smart..and some of the dance moves!!....brilliant video..BIG thanks for posting.
My God, what an absolutely exhilarating, yet haunting rendition by one of two underrated Moodies (Mike Pinder being the other one). I saw them in '81 for the Long Distance Voyager tour at the LA Forum with all of them except Pinder (Pat Moraz on keyboards). Ray did this to a freakin' standing ovation! Best concert ever...miss him terribly!
I can so relate, being right in front of the stage so close to their amazing talent and incredible energy.., almost the same happened to me during "Legend", only Ray was there playing his solo. Justin was looking at the first row starting at one end. I was in the center, and when he came to me I slowly waved and smiled...and YES Justin winked at me...!!! One of the most special moments of my life!! Didn't your heart skip a few beats when Justin saw you??!! lol forever in my memory
I loved the Moody Blues from then to now .King Crimson followed with same kind of music and both these bands worked their way into progressive rock music but I loved their earlier songs the best
I have to agree this was the best part of the shows....and I cried the day it was announced that Ray retired....I love all of his songs. "For My Lady" was played as I walked down the aisle at my wedding, and "Painted Smile" and "Veteran Cosmic Rocker" are a couple of my faves.
Thats just great,my favourite Moody Blues has passed away.Thomas was no Ian Anderson From Jethro Tull, but a great singer and musician,a legend of the mind,R.I.P Mr Thomas.
It may not be as recognized or as influential as solos such as "Comfortably Numb" or "Stairway to Heaven", but this is one of the most gorgeous, most incredibly executed, and simply chilling solos I've ever had the pleasure of hearing. While others may be praised for musical technique and melody as well they should be, this is one of the few solos that succeeds in actually transporting me to another world almost in music. The fact that it comes from an instrument not normally associated with Rock only makes it that much better. It's simply one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard, and arguably one of the most underrated performances out there.
The solo comes in the context of a performance in which Ray Thomas gives his all. And what a solo! He's not classically trained so he creates his own masterpiece. Who else would ever use the flute for rhythm and melody at the same time? And evoke the original studio recording at the end? Amazing stuff, framed by Ray's booming voice.
1000% agree with you...this song by Ray, takes me to another realm, always has.Spellbounding...I understand Ray was ill and needed to retire, but boy when I see Moodies now, this is 1 song they can never play, cause No one could come close to Rays amazing, unique vocal here and flute playing!!xobtw...always wondered what Tim Leary thought of this song, would here Moodies speak of him in their earlier concerts, as they did know him.. perhaps they took some awesome trips together!! Would have loved to come along!!!! xxxx
The last time I saw the Moodys in concert was in Springfield, MO at the Kingdom Hall, a very small and intimate venue. This was about six or seven years ago. Ray wasn't there, of course, but they were still just amazing. I was about 59 years old, and I remember being so excited, running up to the stage like a love struck teenager, and dancing, being able to see them all upclose like that. Was so so wonderful!
Lord, I miss this man and his contribution to The Moodies sound!! He and Mike Pinder were truly the soul of this band. Justin, John and Grahame certainly, together with them created the most introspective, complex and heady music of my generation. Mike should have been allowed to speak at the R & R HOF!
What most beautiful piece of music RIP Ray I pray I will meet you someday in the afterlife
Absolutely my FAVORITE Moody Blues tune...........
People often praise Justin Hayward's singing, songwriting, guitar playing but Ray's songs are tremendous, timeless and memorable; one of the most beautiful singing voices in Pop/Rock. Rest In Peace and Rock, Ray.
Ray Thomas, lovely voice, so talented! Amazing flute solo, and what he did with his voice. Rest in Peace.
He is my fav. Amazing live. Unbelievable
I read your comment just before hearing the flute solo. Hard to describe how beautiful it sounds.
Ray Thomas, RIP. Awesome flutist.
The Moody Blues were the greatest rock band of the late 60's and early 70's. What talent, at every level of their individual instruments and vocal abilities. Especially Ray Davies, and his flute. That was special, and especially in this tune.
Ray Thomas ❤
RIP Ray Thomas, a legend of a musician
The flute solo is simply exquisite. Conjures up so many thoughts in my mind. Forget guitar solos. This is number one.
I would have walked 50 miles naked in a snowstorm to listen to Ray do this. A musical genius
@@michaeltownshend4503 Well, 50 miles naked in a snowstorm would be a bit much for me, lol, but that flute solo was simply magnificent. Ray really rose to the occasion and hit it out the ballpark. May he RIP.
My favourite group and this is the very best rendition of Legend of a Mind I have seen.
Ray is fantastic.
Agree
Brilliant group. My favorite band. A unique sound. I’ll love them forever.
Moody Blues. Music that lives beyond the ages. Thank you .

Me too...5 times...
You got that right. Check out Ray on this one ruclips.net/video/TLF03JP_A3U/видео.html
You're absolutely right
I was thinking the same thing about his voice.
CI saw the Moodies 14 times since 1970.
Will Mr Thomas, you now have your drummer Graeme Edge with you again, and you someday can start playing excellent music afresh, when the rest of the band has finished their concert on earth. And unite with you for a endless tour.
Mike Pinder & Denny Laine joined them recently. What an ethereal band as the play their amazing music.
The moody Blues will take you up but Never bring you down
wow what a fantastic performance by Ray Thomas on the flute . RIP Ray & Graham . Can't stop listening to The Moody Blues.
This is the best ever, lovely and for ever
I would go on grateful dead tour and to shows and see thousands of hippies and at all the moody shows through the 80s and 90s hardly any hippy looking people.why didn't they get it. I like the dead but the moody s really took me to that higher dimension. thanks Ray
Ray Thomas wrote, composed, played and sang a lot of very fine pieces. This may have been his best one.
I believe it was and always will be...my favorite rockperformance of ALL TIME!!!!!!! OMG, am heart broken...XO RAY xxxxx
There's little doubt this was his crowning achievement. The song was always a highlight of any Moody Blues concert...
Very talented, I've been a fan since the early sixties with Denny Laine. "Go now!" etc. CLASS ACT!
He'll take you up, he'll bring you down, he'll have your feet back firmly on the ground.... What a legend Ray !
A great song from a great musician and a great men. RIP Ray Thomas. Fly your astral plane.

The is the only group that ever touch my heart and soul .. my journey still continues ....
Ray Thomas's voice actually got better as he aged it seems so much smoother and like velvet. How remarkable is that? Rest in peace.
Rip Ray Thomas a true legend I love you
Unbelievable song from Ray!! Ray IS the Moody Blues. So sad now he is gone. God bless you Ray!
Nobody does this like Ray! We miss him terribly!
The wind tried to out-blow Ray on that night at Stowe Mountain in Vermont. He looked up and said, " I can blow harder". We roared.
RIP
ETERNITY.......👁👁🙏😇👽✨✨✨💫💫💫💗❤
A beautiful song, and the best flutist ever!
Along with Chris Wood of Traffic, Ray Thomas was one of the first great flautists in rock... predating Ian Anderson by about a year.

agreed, was bad karma, they pushed him aside.
A bad and ugly action of this member..
The man has dementia They were sparing him any embarrassment
Breathtaking flute solo and vocal from Ray. This must have been a very special night.
Amazing how good was Ray
God bless Ray Thomas. So real. I saw him do this 10 times with an orchestra. Wow. Beauty is in his eyes.
Thats a beautiful thing
Its his tune. His moment. He's very proud.
Obra prima ❤ RiP Ray .
