Hi Vince found you this morning - I’ve watched and subscribed to many, many narrowboat vlogs - it’s funny why some hold and retain my interest and some don’t. You have that rare magic ingredient.... so whatever you’re doing, keep it up. As a 61 year old in last throws of my work life, I dream of following your lead and am plotting a future “cruising the cut”. Keep it up I’m looking forward joining you on your narrowboat adventure!
How much did I love this video. I grew up on the river lea. Rye House. My mother was born in Ware. My paternal great grandfather, Henry Silver, was the lock keeper at Hertford Lock for some years. This video brought some wonderful memories flooding back for me. I now live on the scottish/cumbrian borders, so this really was a joy for me. Thank you so much.
Yes some beautiful scenery here, but always enjoy a return visit to see friends and family. Im saving hard to buy a narrowboat. The pull of the water is very strong. ;)
Thanks Ken, I might look confident, but I'm not really, it's all been a massive learning curve, not only the boat handling but everything that comes with this lifestyle!

Excellent stuff and thanks for sharing.....Cannot believe I live 3 miles from Hertford and never been able to find that canal..All the best and good luck on your adventure...wish I was brave enough to take the plunge and start cruising.
Thanks Stuart, yes make the effort to find it, because it is pretty. Remember that you are a long time dead! So if you dream about doing something in life, go for it, what's the worst that can happen?
I’ve yet to get my dream boat but thanks to people like you i can learn from the mistakes that novices like me will no doubt still make but be a bit more savvy,as they say (every days a school day) Great video keep up the great work.
I would definitely give you a 10 out of 10 on that last bit. They sure didn't give you much room to turn around. That was a great job. Well done. I don't think this would have been my first choice for a cruise....too crowded through London and this bit at the end...would have totally discouraged me from the river. I kept think of being stuck in a parking lot when I was just learning to drive. It took me 1/2 hour to get out of it in the dark. These 2 videos gave me the same white knuckle experience. Thanks for sharing and good luck on the way back. Have a Blessed day.
Very generous marks, thank you Margaret! Too many boats in Hertford to moor up anywhere. I didn't get to see what the town was like! I wasn't full of confidence when I first started narrowboating either!
Passing under the A10 ... just the change in sound, from the soft murmuring music of your gently graceful progress to the aggressive attack of fast flowing fury. A reminder that you have found your place and pace.

Narrowboat Cruising & Lifestyle So I had my first night back at work last night after Shielding for 4 months and it got me thinking what Vince’s plan for the future. I haven’t quite grasped what your plan is so I thought just. ask and so... Have you retired? Are you going to moor up somewhere and live from that location? @@absolutebollox Hello Tel, the plan is to continuously travel at a slow pace around England and Wales for as long as the funds last, and as long as I'm healthy enough. As you know I'm not lazy, so if I have to, i will get the tools out again! Aitch has got the same engine as a London Taxi, so it's economical. There are fuel points (mostly boat yards) that sell pink diesel (cheaper) as you use your engine to charge your electrics, heat your water etc. tax on fuel is very low. I have tried to get rid of all my debts, because like you said it's getting on your nerves, I realized I was knocking my pipe out just to pay Debts and Taxes. Having grown up in Ware (and still having family there) it's nice to hear about your impressions of the town. There used to be a malting by the short arm you saw shortly after going under the road bridge, and possibly a mill before that so I've always assumed it was for that. The 'old' wooden bridge isn't actually that old (in the scheme of things) - Modern things not lasting as well as they should!
Thanks for the information Peter, I did read that Ware was the premier town in England for Maltings back in the day, and yes it is a beautiful little town!
Nice channel Vince ,seem to be hundreds of narrow boat channels now but you just keep doing what you are doing it's good. Be proud of yourself would love that opportunity .Concidering you are new and alone you are doing really well mate,i have Subbed and will follow your new venture.
Hi what a super trip up the river to Hertford , you are doing well already as a new boater. Like to make a comment on that lock you did. Double width locks on rivers and canals can vary so much for various reasons but in general I have found that if the paddle is raised about a 3rd travel on the same side as the boat with the boat back toward the bottom gate, the flow of water will cross the lock go down the other side and back again holding it against the wall its on. When all is settled raise paddle further, go and hold rope cos it will have slackened and you will be in control. I also found on double locks just opening the boat side gate should be enough to continue out meaning all your work is done from one side of the lock. Look forward to the journey back. (PJ)
Oh well done Vince, that turn was rather scary, but you made it look easy. Great to follow your journey, learning all the time, us as well as you. Keep them coming.

Hello Stuart! I was a rookie narrowboater in them days! I think that was the second time that I moved a narrowboat (bit nervous) Thanks for the good marks, and hope to see your comments on tomorrows vlog!
Hi Vince, came across your channel and I have to say that I am enjoying your adventures very much. I look forward to following you along your journey. Best regards from New Jersey USA...
Very nice, a few (hopefully helpful) comments if I may? AN intake house is where water is taken from the river for an industrial process (or for drinking water) You may want to reduce the lenth of your centre line. If it falls off the boat it looks as though it's long enough to wrap round the prop. In a lock, if you open the paddle on the same side as the boat, the water will keep the boat into the side. At 39:12 there looked to be moorings on the Armco? When winding, if you stick the nose in, and push the tiller right over, you should be able to drive the back end across.
Mate I'm really enjoying watching you and Atich I'm a solo boat owner I started July this year with my plastic boat I may not be able to go far because she runs on petrol and ill definitely watching more of your vlogs
No need to apologise for a long vlog , 50 minutes passed in no time at all ! Enjoyed it immensely . Hope it sinks in that your living the life; the sooner it does , the longer you have to enjoy ! Me so envious ! BTW , wot's happened to part 1????? Great stuff, Sir.
FYI, you are supposed to give way to canoeists and sailing vessels (how, I have no idea). I love that you just show your trips in normal time. It is soothing and gives us time to enjoy the views. (BTW, I thought your first Winding was good. Probably because you took your time over it.)

Thanks zumbieuk, very generous with your marks, you're not really that far away in St Albans. I plan to go up the River Stort that's another River that's not been shown in any detail on these type of channels!
Thanks Mike, Very generous with the Winding marks. Where there are not a lot of places to moor the boat around here, the last couple of moorings have been under trees (not so good) but working fine before that!
My Father used to tell me stories about swimming in the river Lee down in the London end ( Yuk ) near Walthamstow In the 1920s . hope to see this part when you go through London ! Cheers from OZ
Thanks for the tip Kathleen, I will remember that, didn't have much choice on them locks as both only had one paddle working, but if I go back I will tie up on the same side as the working paddle (if I can remember)
What about sharing a bit of your back story Vince - particularly the decision to "sell up" and buy a narrowboat? Also the process of choosing a boat, what you looked for and deciding on Aitch?
Wasn't impressed with that lock! When I was there it was in a poor state! Hydraulic fluid leaking everywhere. Environment Agency maintain it, I'd say not very healthy for the water life!
I would sure be hesitant to walk those gunnels to get to a bollard for the centerline or get back on the boat that way. wouldnt take much to bounce you loose and get pinned between the boat and the wall. But that's just me.
A most relaxing 50-minutes of slow cruising FREE of (disliked) sped-up footage and wholly inappropriate, unwelcomed music. Thanks for that...!
Thank you James for the kind comment, it's appreciated!

Hi Vince, came across your channel and I have to say that I am enjoying your adventures very much. I look forward to following you along your journey. Best regards from New Jersey USA...
Thank you , glad you're enjoying the Vlogs! All the best Vince.
That was better then watching Netflix lol great vid mate I thought that tune at the end was a 10/10
Thanks for that! Glad you are enjoying them!
Very nice, a few (hopefully helpful) comments if I may?
AN intake house is where water is taken from the river for an industrial process (or for drinking water)
You may want to reduce the lenth of your centre line.
Thanks for All the useful tips danensis!
Great new life style well done pal hope to get some running costs licence costs etc.
Thanks, I'm keeping a tally of everything, so when my first year is up I will show the costs!

Must look amazing in autumn with the colours.....
It's a lovely time of the year to be on the canals and rivers!
Hi Vince great cruise up the Lee and well done on the turn around at the end. Cheers Keith from Melbourne Australia.
Thanks Keith! Glad you liked it mate!
Great video!
Thanks Keiron!
Mate I'm really enjoying watching you and Atich I'm a solo boat owner I started July this year with my plastic boat I may not be able to go far because she runs on petrol and ill definitely watching more of your vlogs
Thanks Adrian, good luck with the boat!
Must be an absolute picture in Autumn....
Yes it was a pretty picture up this way!
Great video and well done on the winding😁
Thanks Black Lablover!
A nice quiet cruise with lovely scenery....
Bit of a long video, that one was!
Newgate intake house is the start of the new river which supplies reservoirs in norf London somewhere..
Really enjoying your vlogs , good on you for going for it,
Thank you William!
Try opening the paddle on the same side as the boat the water pressure should keep the boat on the side you want it.Nice video!
Thanks Tony for the good advice I will take that on board, the only problem was both them Locks only had one paddle in working order!
We all make those mistakes... But only when people are there to watch you of course! Been a long time since I've been that way but will do again soon.
What's even worse Robbie, if there is nobody about to see those mistakes I get the camera out and show them to thousands of people!
That’s the only way to wind slow and steady.well done.
Thanks GM, and that was very slow and steady!
Thanks Harold for the nice comment, glad you enjoyed it. Yes I see what you mean, I should have titled it Part 2.Stanstead Abbotts to Hertford!
Cheers for that Harold I've changed the title to make more sense!
FYI, you are supposed to give way to canoeists and sailing vessels (how, I have no idea). I love that you just show your trips in normal time. It is soothing and gives us time to enjoy the views. (BTW, I thought your first Winding was good. Probably because you took your time over it.)
Thanks for the info Stephanie! Glad that you find them soothing!
Great ride! Didn’t mind the length…very enjoyable!
👍👊😎
Long video that one George!
It's a ten for winding.Really enjoying your blogs.where do you plan to go next? I live in Stalbans, never really thought of the river lea,and towns to visit.didnt realise how nice it is.thanks for showing us
Thanks zumbieuk, very generous with your marks, you're not really that far away in St Albans. I plan to go up the River Stort that's another River that's not been shown in any detail on these type of channels!
Really enjoyed the vlog mate. Take care
Thanks Glynn you too!
Enjoyed the cruise mate,7.5 out of 10 for the. three point turn.,
Thanks Roy, high praise indeed, I thought it was about a 6 for the turn!
Nicely done on that dead end!
Cheers Bob!
Another nice vid 👍🏻 only another 1980+ miles of canals to explore 😉
Thanks Nathan, That's gonna take me a while to do!
Narrowboat Cruising & Lifestyle No rush
I like your silent video followed by added commentary when editing. C
Glad you like that Courtenay! Not everyone does!
winding: 10! very enjoyable, like your commentary, especially details like solo through the lock. Is the solar performing well?
Thanks Mike, Very generous with the Winding marks. Where there are not a lot of places to moor the boat around here, the last couple of moorings have been under trees (not so good) but working fine before that!
Wel done for first time better than mine try a bit less on the thotal and the tiller less is more 😉
OK thanks Robin, I'm getting a better feel for how Aitch operates by the day!
My Father used to tell me stories about swimming in the river Lee down in the London end ( Yuk ) near Walthamstow In the 1920s . hope to see this part when you go through London ! Cheers from OZ
Hopefully I will show that area Martyn!
Very quiant gazebos ,so picturesque.not keen on the mossies 😆
Ware is a lovely place! What's wrong with them mossies, that's the only wildlife That I've filmed so far ha ha!
9 out 10
Thanks Tina, very generous!
Try and open the paddle on the side your boat is the water hits the other side and then comes back and pushes your boat against the side
Thanks for the tip Kathleen, I will remember that, didn't have much choice on them locks as both only had one paddle working, but if I go back I will tie up on the same side as the working paddle (if I can remember)
The gazebos are for Gongoozlers!!!! Ha ha!
That's right Marietjie, they are pretty, I see you've got all the Lingo!
Nice bit of winding at the end.....
Thanks!
What about sharing a bit of your back story Vince - particularly the decision to "sell up" and buy a narrowboat? Also the process of choosing a boat, what you looked for and deciding on Aitch?
Hello Nick, I will do that in future episodes, when I'm babbling on going down the Waterways!
The water bus has to wind in the same spot, that final bridge is low! Have to say the bottom gate at Ware lock is bloomin' heavy.
OK Les, I'll take it on board, and be mindful of that!
