I could barely watch that rap scene the first time around, I felt almost embarrassed for Kendall..? But now I've gone back to it sooo many times, the tune is seriously addictive. And now understanding it more, it's even more enjoyable to go back to

One thing you're missing is that Kendall is loosely based on James Murdoch who was a partner in the independent record label Rawkus that had Company Flow and Talib Kwelli and Mos Def on their roster. In the first season, they show Kendall vibing TWICE to Run the Jewels and DJ Shadow's song Nobody Speak. El-P was in Company Flow. This is definitely a direct nod to James Murdoch. Just a little thing I thought I'd add. A lot of people don't know that James Murdoch was a partner at Rawkus.

You did a great job explaining what makes this such an excellent example of real "cringe" material. It's not just straight goofiness. Many aspects of it are good. It's the dynamic between Kendall and Logan, and the clear mismatch of who Kendall is vs. who he's trying to be with the rap schtick, that makes it so hard to watch.

I love watching videos that analyze shows/movies/books/music because I am someone who seemingly lacks the ability to, so watching videos (like this one) allows me to completely appreciate a show like Succession at a deeper level than I was previously. What a great analysis of this song!! I'm a HUGE Succession Fan. Jeremy Strong is such a good actor. I remember watching this and cringing like I was in the audience. It was such a horribly good scene! I literally listen to the Succession theme song when I need to focus and crank out work. I am quickly becoming a Nicholas Britell fan!!

When you consider that the score of just about every dramatic show on television is orchestral (or SOUNDS orchestral), Britell makes his SYMPHONIC (the score for FBI raid on the Roy building this season is just breathtaking). To add hip-hop to that - and to make it WORK - is masterful.
Totally with you on the FBI raid score, I sometimes go back and watch that episode JUST for that music

This is one of the best video essays I've seen, not just on Succession but on anything. Very effective word choice, delivery and visuals. I loved hearing about the Power motif, on my watchthrough of the show I hadn't even realized it was attributed to Greg, but as you said it works so well for his character. The others have lived their lives via an oversaturation of power and privilege, to the point where the significance of their positions is lost on them. Greg's experiences with status are all the more impactful because he started out with nothing and is actively experiencing power's corruption. Also enjoyed the background on the theme and the hip hop influence, Britell's soundtracking and musicial decisions are genius, you've helped explain them wonderfully. Summarizing and elaborating on information when it's needed respectively, extremely well done!

This is a great video, really glad someone took the time to dissect (some of) the intricacies of the score for this show! A piece that is also very much in line with the opening scene is Roman's theme ("Roman's Beats - Hearts") which is basically the main theme but cranked up to 11 in terms of how unsettling and /wrong/ it feels. A pity you didn't touch on it, but very interesting video nonetheless. Thank you for the effort :)

I think my favorite is the end of episode 6 season 4. You get a feeling from the music that a cycle has been broken. The abberations and abnormalitiesthat always exist in the main theme have been mended. There is healing, peace and longing and finality... and they end the entire show with that bit of music as well.

I also feel like the soundtrack, at least the non diagetic parts of it, also try to more show how characters perceive the situation rather than be a theme of the character or point to how we should perceive them
This is why Power works with Greg: Greg is an outsider and this badass music plays because that's how Greg perceives his environment: polished and badass and scary to the point that he feels out of his league and oppressed by it.
By combining Power with Greg's bewildered expression we get that effect even if the scene is a simple shot of Greg in a bathroom: Greg is reacting to the impression of what his environment/situation is like through his eyes, which is Power, and how he sees himself in respect to it is conveyed through his body language

I was hoping this might finally be a place where someone points out the sheer hypocrisy of "An Open Letter to NYC" being the song Kendall is listening to in his first scene.
The opening verse talks about how every different walk of life in NYC no matter how much they make or what their background is, they're brought together through their shared need to commute through the city.
To have that song playing as Kendall is being chauffeured through the city away from the "plebs" was a great and subtle way to immediately display how sheltered and out of touch the Roy children are.
I do understand that this point is a bit of an aside to the videos subject, but seems the closest place I can point this other detail out. Sorry 😅

This video made me realize why i keep repeating succession episodes oftentimes i just listen.
I always thought that kendall listening to rap music was a way of making fun of him/calling him out on his hypocrisy since the music genre has always been associated with struggling communities. it reminded of the white boys I met in college who would listen to Travis scott/drake and act all though even tho most of them came from a wealthy/upper middle class background.

The scene is so funny that I don't even feel the cringe.
This is one of the best shows made in modern times IMO. That song was totally unexpected when it came but it just added to the essence of the show in a significant way. Not a fan of hip-hop even mildly but it was a great fit for the occasion.

Well done! Although I'm not musical at all, so some of the commentary went over my head. But I adore the music in this show! It is absolutely brilliant! I also love how the rap piece is so deliberately cringe, bc of Kendall. Otherwise, everything about it is good. You want to listen to it, in spite of Kendall, and every time he stops singing, you almost forget how he ruins it. Similar to the way he lives life and does business, he has good instincts, and knows what works, but he is blind to how he affects the equation once he inserts himself into what otherwise is a fairly "harmonious" situation (see what I did there?? 😉).

Edit: I love this show in every aspect except the music. And I loved the music for the first few episodes.
This is, like, the only scene that uses any original music outside a variation on the theme (literally), and only scene with a soundtrack song (the hip hop song). I found the music of this show particularly announcing in general, as it is ALWAYS some version of the instrumental theme. Always (and not just the first season). I am in no way surprised to hear the theme turned out to be a culmination of all his prior ideas.
I think you gotta give Nicholas some more credit. It’s true that much of Season 1’s soundtrack are a version of the main theme but even then, there were some unique compositions in there and even in repeats, the difference in instruments and vibes made if feel new and appropriate.
Season 2 especially adds a lot of new tracks, motifs for the characters and other fun stuff. Not as varied as other OSTs maybe but I really dig the unique solid identity it has.
I think the running theme song and all variations of it throughout each episode are by design. The music was intended to introduce us to the Roy's world amidst the backdrop of old family photos and scenes of old and (new) New York, with reels of older as well as modern day media. It's the planting in our minds of how powerful and sustainable (so far) Logan Roy's empire has been. I think it's perfect and never get tired of it. If Nicholas Brittell changed the music too much, I'd think, "Hmmm, that's not very Succession like." Jmo.
