    We in the Sacramento mineral society were lucky enough to have one of the guys who still have access to the site, and has mined it with his club for years, come up and give us an excellent in-depth account of the history of the mine. He also brought out specimens of high quality for us to look at. It was amazing.

    Just before we got engaged we went to California and selected a gorgeous pear cut benitoite for the ring, had it sent away to be set and sent to the last location of our visit to the USA. I love rare-stone engagement rings and mine especially -no one I know has ever heard of benitoite until I show it to them.

    Hello Jay & Natalie, nice to see U Jay on RUclips. I use to see U on some of the awesome Jtv gem shows with Mandy & Tom. I see you also love Benitoite are state gemstone. We had some large samples of the crystal in rough lying around in our small city Santa Cruz museum. They found they were the biggest crystals on record. The crystals were lying around for decades gathering dust. I think they are are now in the Smithsonian. Also just for interest I like to mentioned, I happen to find a nice random sample of the crystals in in gravel matrix while walking across local rail road tracks. The crystals were in rail gravel mix that showed small blue crystals in sample. I tracked the mix down to a plant that mines gravel close to the mine with in about 80 miles.

    ✌ Jay, thank you very much for being on RUclips. Also Natalie, could you tell me more about Pink Benitoite?

    • @gems
      @gems  4 года назад +2

      There are a small number of extremely rare pink benitoites that came from one small claim near the main benitoite mine, but for the most part they are so rare that they live mostly in myth. There aren’t public images available to prove their existence just documentation of that color being a possibility in the mineralogical and gemological records. There are a few stones that are blue or violet that have a pinkish component to their color but even this is extremely rare. Some colorless benitoites can be heat treated to produce a peachy orange to peachy pink-orange color. Not all colorless benitoite that are heated will change so the stones are another rarity on the market but this time there is enough availability that you can at least find pictures!

    • @nak8490
      @nak8490 4 года назад

      @@gems Even if public images of Pink Benitoite haven't been made yet, I'm still impressed with finding an image from the List of Visible Data Files on the Mineral Spectroscopy Server that shows multiple orange Benitoite crystals. Some of the crystals should be called Bi-color Benitoite or even Tri-color Benitoite with colors of orange, blue, and colorless together. It's quite amazing.

    I owned several claims near the Dallas Gem Mine.
    In prospecting, (black lighting at night) not unusual to see Benitoite.; not my interest.
    We found another source/location , which will not be disclosed.
    Pink Benitoite has been found in Canada and Idaho.
    The Franciscan range has many surprises and secrets. One of my favorite places.
    Glad it is somewhat remote.

    I don’t usually comment but this stone has really peaked my curiosity.
    So many questions so little time. How is this gemstone cut? Can it be cut in a cobichon(sic) style and if so what characters would it take on ? I know that you said that it is only found in Southern CA but could there be other places that have the same chemistry to produce it?

    • @gems
      @gems  4 года назад +2

      Benitoite is cut just like any other gem. There are always slight differences cutting stones due to the refractive index and cleavage, for example.
      Benitoite is highly pleochroic, higher dispersion than diamond, and some crystals can be strongly zoned so these characteristics may be more apparent when made into a cabochon.
      Benitoite is found in Japan, Russia, Czech Republic, Australia, and the US, namely Montana, Arkansas, and California but the gem quality material is only found in California. The geochemistry and formation conditions from that area of CA would be very hard to find elsewhere in the world. There were tectonic processes, volcanism, metamorphic melting, recrystallization and a whole host of things going on that can get confusing even for geologists.
