    00:00 Introduction
Today, we discuss the 15 hallmarks of a quality authentic trench coat, how to buy it, and everything you need to know about this iconic garment.
00:34 Today, the trench coat is popular with men and women all over the world. Just like with many other garments, it is unclear what the exact history of the trench coat is. Basically, we have Aquascutum, Macintosh, and Burberry all in there. Today, you can find a trench coat in all kinds of variations from different companies in different qualities and different details. The goal of this video is to help you find a trench coat that is as authentic as possible that suits your style.
01:09 So what are the 15 hallmarks of an authentic trench coat?
01:15 1. Today the most popular type of trench coat material is called Gabardine which was invented by Thomas Burberry around the middle of the 19th century. It's a tightly woven fabric that is supposed to withstand rain and keep you dry. Another option that's very popular especially with Burberry's coats is 51% cotton and 49% polyester. This material has a great track record of standing up to the elements and therefore, it's also recommended.
02:11 2. When it comes to color, the iconic trench coat has this kind of khaki, camel color. However, you also find trench coats in navy, black, red, green, and basically, any other colors.
02:39 3. Sleeve style. Trench coats come with many different sleeve styles. The two most popular ones are either the raglan sleeves and it's characterized by the fact that the sleeve goes all the way over the shoulder and is sewn together at the back of my neck. The alternative has a shoulder seam right at the shoulder.
    03:35 4. Double-breasted trench coat.
03:53 5. Epaulets. Epaulets are these little tabs on the shoulder. This is something that highlights an authentic trench coat.
04:11 6. Gun flap. Originally was used to prevent the garment from getting wet or to actually button over your trench coat like so to prevent the water from running inside and getting it wet.
04:31 7. Hook and the throat latch. It truly allows you to keep everything really closed so you are protected.
04:40 8. D rings on the belt which were actually little rings on the belt of the trench coat which were used for all kinds of things like water bottles, grenades, and anything else that you wanted to carry.
04:52 9. Sleeve straps. They are simply there to make your sleeves tighter to keep out the wind and keep you warm.
05:01 10. Deep yoke back. The reason to have a deep yoke back is to keep the water away from you and to keep you dry.
05:10 11. Wedge back - helps to keep the wind out even if you unbutton it and the buttons are there so you can close it. If you want you can open it if you need a greater range of movement.
05:32 12. Pockets. A real trench coat should have accessible pockets from outside and from the inside. That way, no matter if you wear it buttoned or unbuttoned, you can always reach your pockets.
05:45 13. Leather buckles. Sometimes you can find trench coats with metal buckles but usually they are always covered in leather. Brown or black or whatever works but look for leather buckles.
05:59 14. Checked lining. For example, Aquascutum has a famous blue and kind of mustard yellow lining versus Burberry has a so-called nouveau check which is black, red, and beige and white.
06:47 15. Made in England. If you want to buy a genuine, made in England trench coat, I suggest you go with trench coats pre 1999 from Burberry.
One big problem when buying a trench coat is sizing so if you want to buy one, especially on eBay or on other places remotely, make sure you know the measurements.
Now you may wonder which kind of trench coat should I buy? There are a number of different ones out there. You can get one from Acquascutum, from Macintosh, from Burberry and personally I think, the old Burberry and Acquascutum are the most authentic ones and those are the ones I would buy.

Only ever wear grandma certified garnments. Thats the rule I follow. I would wear my grandpas clothes, but she gave them away. She donated them,so I can still live with it, because someone else, who needed them more is getting use out of them. I still use his watch and cufflinks for special occasions tho.
As it turns out I am essentially him in younger and bigger, as I appearently share many of his habits, except smoking.

I normally wear my trench coat during the 3 seasons besides Sumer due to the intense heat. But when Autumn and Spring come along, I tend to wear it for warmth and I like the feel and look at myself when the wind hits and the end of my coat flaps. During the winter, I regularly wear something warm under the coat like more layers of clothes. Personally, I don't pay any mind to what people think of me when I'm wearing a trench coat, especially if I'm at school. I just like the fashion of the trench coat or even a duster.

Whenever I can wear my trench coat I’m issued in the Marines, my family friends and girlfriend often say it’s very assertive looking and feel very comfortable walking with me. So if you want a trench coat but are worried what people would think. don’t be, be confident and walk with purpose and no matter who you are it will look good on you.

Wrong fact about the gun flap, I went to a Burberry training about the Gaberdine trench coat and the reason behind the gun flap before was because when they would shoot their rifles during the war, the kickback of the rifle ends up ruining their coats, so the gun flap was made and was actually replaceable so they wouldn't have to fix the whole coat, it was a quicker way so they could use their trench coat right away.
Just through i'd share this info so you could help improve the knowledge of people! Great VIdeos and keep it up!
Deep Yoke Back - The extra layer was there because during the war, the most exposed part of the person is the back, they added that for extra protection against the rain.
The Check - The Check on the Burberry Trench Coat was actually a request by a customer of theirs who just wanted a design on the lining, it just caught on afterwards and they started to implement it into their design.
    hope this helps!

Burberry's a bit off here. A flap of cloth won't do anything for kickback, but I can see some argument for wear and tear. If you look at the history of the coat, it was purchased by Officers. Officers didn't typically use rifles, but they did use pistols. When their arms are raised in a shooting position, rain would frequently enter their coat due to the collar "billowing out", so the flap was added so they could raise their arm and remain dry - exactly as was mentioned in the video.

The thing about Gabardine cloth is that even though it is 100% cotton, it's a very tight and thick weave. It is designed to 'swell' when water hits it, and then keeps from further ingress of water. Wearing a wool sweater/jumper underneath should help the system work just a bit better, but cotton is not my first choice. Other garments you might look at are those made from Grenfell cloth, and of course Harris Tweed, which is wool. I prefer the wool myself.

My wife bought me a really good trench coat some years ago now. It was very long, so I had it shortened recently about a foot.
This keeps in with modern coat style nowadays I think. (2019). I am sure the trench was rubbished somewhat when it was used in some sketches like ''Some mothers do have em'' and in ''Inspector Clueso'' starring Peter Sellers. These are now forgotten, so I am sure that it can be worn with dignity again.

Suggestions on how to replace the belt on this $8 find? Is going beltless acceptable and should I just rock it like a top coat? The trench is a dark grey. Note too the collar has a black over liner and looks to be removable like the inner liner. I imagine this is for transitioning from one season to the next. Appreciate any and all suggestions regarding the replacement of the belt

I inherited a beautiful trench coat that I’m having trouble getting information for. Maybe you can help. It says “tailored for Richman” on one tag and “Made in Poland” on the other. The liner pattern is very similar to Burberry. If fits most of the definitions in this video besides no neck hooks and,it’s not made in England, and there’s no hooks. Are you familiar with this maker, do you know what it’s made from (it does say dry clean only on it)

+Gentleman's Gazette It does help if you dress up but I'm 6'5" and pretty thin so even my tailored clothes are still a little baggy and I think that makes me look suspicious or something because a couple people have told me I "look scary". It's not a trench coat, though. It's an ulster and it's black so that might be another reason.

The trench coat and Duster are two completely different coats. I have a Duster, while its great for keeping rain and weather off me, It's NOT the warmest coat in the world. Often I need to put a sweater or another lighter coat under it to have it keep me warm at all. But for keeping rain, snow, and the like off you, you can't beat a good duster. I do want to eventually get a Trenchcoat to add to my collection.

A very informative video, well done ... and thanks for sharing.
For me a trench coat has to look and be fully equipped like the one Humphrey Bogart wore in "Casablanca", because for me only this classic design is the real one and only trench coat.
That's why I'm so happy that I found a very good high quality long trench coat, namely an "Aquascutum of London made in England specially for Old England Parma - Aqua 5" in a rather darker beige and in an authentic style with everything that makes a real trench coat. "Aqua 5" is a special type of durable water and stain repellency processed exlusive to Aquascutum.
I bought it second-hand for only 120 EURO, but it really looks like new and unworn, for whatever reason, and it looks fantastic and wears like that, so it's a real bargain for me.
Apart from that, my lady and I are overall big fans of British men's and women's clothing, especially the classic style.

I like trench coats, although lately I tend to be more into single breasted, because the length of the coat in itself is a statement, so any extra details tend to attract undue attention imho.
The trend lately for very short raincoats is ridiculous and impractical. It seems to be changing however. Uniqlo has an array of very classic looking coats on offer right now.

Looking sharp in your trench coat. I myself like the Burberrys' trench coats because they have that military style. I like to have my trench coat buttoned and belted but at times I have worn it opened. Is there a wrong way to wear the belt on a trench coat? An example, tying it. Maybe a video on it on the do's and don'ts of wearing a trench coat belt.
