I'm a homeschool mom for 8 years now. My daughter is 14. We had a project back in 2016 for geology and made our own gold concentrate bowl to learn about density. We ended up with 2 grams of gold from one 5 gallon bucket taken from the railroad area close to our home. (RUclips gives us so much science fun.) But now we are addicted to finding gold and gems here in Shasta county. And now we will be joining a club. We have been watching your show and jeffs show for a while. We pretty much handmake all our prospecting equipment that we see everyone using. Very awesome to know that your a highschool teacher! We learn so much from you and Jeff. Thank you so much. 🐸
Funny that you mentioned the complaints...I've actually always liked your videos simply because they focus on prospecting, the getting out, the processes and effort involved in capturing gold...not just showing the end result. Great vid(s), keep it up!
I've only ever driven through this area, so it's great that you are there working and shooting video. We are so lucky to live in such a beautiful province.
Your videos are good, always like the commentary and we share your love for the outdoors. The gold reveal? Well that's just the icing on the cake! Looking forward to more.
Thanks for sharing your adventures with us Dan. I'm a pro landscape artist and have visited some of the same areas that you have. Your appreciation of nature and general attitude are inspiring! Looking forward to future videos.
I am from a dryish part of Australia. I dream of a river with water in it. I get my wash with a bent screw driver and my hands. Seeing videos like this are quite interesting. Just to see a different perspective on prospecting. Loved seeing the vintage train engines and land slide. I can relate to your hard work. I sleep in my car onsite. We are not allowed to use a sluice where I live plus there is no water. Can't use a dry blower either. I pan all my wash in a tub with water I carry in. I envy you sooooo much. Personally, I couldn't give a rat's arse as to how much gold you get. I love seeing your techniques. I watch as many different people as I can and pick up tips along the way. One thing that draws m,e back here is your vids , like one other mat manufacturers, you are genuine and real. No fake shit. If you have a bad day, you show it. Some of the vids drag on a bit but you don't see me posting any so keep it up.
Well, I can certainly see how much your presentations have improved over the years! This 4 year old piece popped up in my feed & at first I just thought you were in a specially bad mood or something!
Your best video to date! So nice to see you work some material for a change. Thanks so much for catering to the requests of us "complainers, er, commenters"! Maybe something I do that seems tedious to me would be wildly entertaining to others. It's so hard to know.
As a kids in the 70's my family went on many camping trips up to Shaw Springs/Gold Pan. Great memories, as my retirement nears I plan to get into the gold mining on the fraser canyon. Perhaps I'll see ya up there then, heck I may even buy a claim from you. 😉
I think you videos are outstanding Dan. It's a prospectors dream for sure. The gold is nice but there are finer things than gold. From one redhead to another stay golden!
Just a thought...I think it would be cool to see some fishing or outdoor camping footage when you spend the night prospecting. Especially on this video
Nice gold thanks for showing it. I wish we could run a high banker here in Switzerland. Just pan and sluice oh well back to the river for me. 6c this morning wish it was a little warmer but 35 + is extreme. Dave
I remember when my dad helped build the dam, and I was told that when the rock at the face was levelled for the wall and left without a word of a lie a quartz vein with gold being exposed, and they just poured cement straight over and finished building the dam and the reef was never seen again... I wonder if its where your source of gold is coming from, nice clean out.. Regards
If you haven't figured out the wind in the mic thing yet?,. In a pinch we will take any kind of soft foam, such as the foam in a seat cushion, "Yes my boat now has a couple holes in otherwise perfect seats" In case anyone was wondering. just take a small chunk of that foam and carve it out with a razor blade so that it slides tightly over the mic and covers it all the way around! Works like a charm,.. Option 2,. order a wind sock and don't let the cameraman forget it back at the studio!!
The most common way to reduce wind noise is with an external lav microphone with a wind shield. The shield is commonly a close foam or fur like covering of the mic head.
Hi Dan great video as usual. I have a solution for your mic and the wind noise either a fake mustache or a small piece of T-shirt over the mic will help deflect the wind and reduce noise. Seen it on youtube. Keep up the good work.
gumbidammit I looked into it and found a mic cover that I can put over the mic hole on the camera to stop much of the wind noise. Just have to try it and see if it helps.
Thanks for all the hard work you put into your videos! quick question though. Am I correct to assume that those silver flakes are gold covered in Mercury?
Dan, I know that this film is 4 years old but I would like to know how much the ocean tides affect your Fraser River flows. Will you please mention this in one of your more current films please. (Paul from Oregon Coast).
that's when you run a couple hours and then check your tailings at the end of your sluice to see if there's any gold being blown out the back, and if so you turn your water down a bit. Anyone ever thought of purposely trying to stack a section of rocks on end to make a place that will collect gold for you when the waters rise again? That way the next year you could come right back to that section and hopefully have it loaded with gold?
I like your videos because they focus on where. And how , I especially like the vidio. Heavy materials, and yes I have been watching for a few years . comment are I hit the like bottom all the time. And yes on that clam with the big pickers ,where is that gold coming. From.
Also for the wind noise and to reduce it, I seen something about using one of those little foam brushes over the mic. But I honestly dont know if it would work or not. But for 50 cents or whatever it is, might be worth a try.
Yea definitly stay out of the sun this year (2018) were getting many solar activity and we have less magnet shield then ever. Meaning our sun protection is lesser than ever that's been recorded in history. White is in this year.
This is my first year gold prospecting and I just bought a claim and will be purchasing a highbanker in the next week or so. Here’s my issue, how do I deal with the spent water and tailings as my claim is on the side of a steep mountain? I’ll have my highbanker set up on the road and I don’t want to have the water run out the sluice and down the mountain side and there isn’t room to dig a hole to contain the sediment. I can put a bin at the end of the sluice and use most of the tailings for road repair but the water needs to go somewhere safe the won’t wash away the road or go back into the stream even though it isn’t a fish bearing stream.
In this situation I would try recirculating water through a very large bin. I like the solid plastic fruit bins that they use in orchards. You can get them from Growers Direct.
Dan Hurd, dang I don’t know why I didn’t think of that. I was planning to build a cheap recirculating system for my sluice at home but I’ll definitely make something for the highbanker on my claim and I don’t have to be 10 meters away from the stream with a recirculating system. I’ll check out the bin from Growers like you suggested! Keep up the great videos and learning material and thanks for the response 😊
If you get the loudest fog horn when the train comes hoot it off and you will get them to hoot thier horn back. It's cool to get a train to say hi to you and if you keep it up they will say hi ever day... Try it it makes you feel good....
What size pump do use on this Dan?. . Also how many G.P.H and P.S.I. is it? Do you run it at full throttle? Also do you have any valves for water control and what is the width of your sluice? Any input greatly appreciated! Keep the vids coming! Thx!
+Trav Bach I made my own highbanker. There are a lot of good ones out there. I like what Greywolf produces. D'arcy Cooper make great highbankers tho I'm not sure if he is currently making them. I have seen the G1 in operation and am very impressed. Although I like a better hopper system.
Just a quick question. Why are you using moss with expanded metal in the last half of the sluice and not Gold Hog mats all the way? Good video, thanks.
Dennis Petersen I'm pretty sure he assumes we're not interested in watching him work the dirt. I figure anyone who doesn't want to see him dig or pan at normal speed can fast forward a few minutes.
Did you misspeak? "About a gram of gold." Alone for two days, 9 hours hard labor, $1000 in equipment, say 5 gallons of gasoline on the pump, transport to the site and back, minimalist lodging and more sun exposure than healthy for a redhead...for about $38 worth of metal that will get stashed not used. That about it? With THE fever like that you need to wear a sombrero and have a good paying job. Ya gotta love that buttery gold shinning back at you.
Boy you sure like running your sluice ( High Banker ) hard. I'd be afraid of loosing the finer gold with the water running that hard. I like to run a sluice so I can just see the water bunching ( causing a hump ) over the riffles. Just hard enough that the material is boiling behind the riffles but not much harder. I really think more of the Fines stay on the mat that way. When your board some day amuse me and give it a try ?

Thanks for taking us along to learn prospecting. Good excersize, working for self, enjoying the good earth. Gold is the icing on the cake.
Yes it is
love your videos of all types
I've only ever driven through this area, so it's great that you are there working and shooting video. We are so lucky to live in such a beautiful province.
Yes we are. There is so much to explore and see here.

There's always gonna be haters. You have more people that appreciate your videos than not! Glad I found your channel
Thanks!

Hi Dan what a nice spot. Great video as usual, luv watching. Take care out there and get that shiny yellow stuff. Thks for sharing.
What a ripper of a few days. Great area to wake up to. Nothing beats just getting out/away. Especially camping 🏕
Exactly
Well, I can certainly see how much your presentations have improved over the years! This 4 year old piece popped up in my feed & at first I just thought you were in a specially bad mood or something!
Great Gold Dan ! Thanks for the videos ! They are Awesome! Couldn't have said it better than phil. Nature is Awesome!
im impressed. but some people should stop complaining about the way u do things. i love the blasting u do.
Thanks!

If you do see me, stop and say hi!
Great video Dan! Thank you for all the videos - they are very well done.
Good job Dan. Fun video...wishing you an ounce a day.
great gold!
you can tell I have watched all your new content when things from 2015 are showing up in my suggested lol Love the Gold!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks Dan good video with some nice shinny and the Trains too looks like you are pretty far out in the Country.
Regards Tom
Wow! That’s Texas hot! I’m enjoying these older videos!
I think you videos are outstanding Dan. It's a prospectors dream for sure. The gold is nice but there are finer things than gold. From one redhead to another stay golden!
I'm glad you didn't call him Ponyboy XD
another great video!
great video,

I like that way of cleaning out. I've been standing the sluice tray on end but then again I don't have a stand.
Another top notch video. Take care
cracking gold. A lot chunkier than I was expecting with a couple of nice wee nuggets
This was a great video dan

some chunkie gold there
Thanks!
Oh yeah,. Also, if your goal by any chance was to get me hooked on another hobby that I can't afford? Well played!!
Ha!

The few I've seen looked like little mustaches. I have a friend who just used a bit of old tee shirt. It worked great. Thanks for the cool videos.
4 engines on that 2nd train?! That sucker must have took 2 hours to go by!!
Thanks for all the hard work you put into your videos! quick question though. Am I correct to assume that those silver flakes are gold covered in Mercury?

Thank you very much. Gotta figure out that gold source
We’ve been watching the video and we noticed something. What is the orange/red “thing” across the river on the hillside?
Also for the wind noise and to reduce it, I seen something about using one of those little foam brushes over the mic. But I honestly dont know if it would work or not. But for 50 cents or whatever it is, might be worth a try.
Sorry for all my corny ideas, just trying to help make your channel the best. So take it all with a grain of salt.

LOL so funny you actually mentioned the wind near the end
That is a nice set up you have there, roughly how much did it cost to build?

Hi Dan, What is the brand of highbanker you are using? What would you recommend for a noob? Thanks for all these videos!
+Trav Bach I made my own highbanker. There are a lot of good ones out there. I like what Greywolf produces. D'arcy Cooper make great highbankers tho I'm not sure if he is currently making them. I have seen the G1 in operation and am very impressed. Although I like a better hopper system.
Question? Can you use the micro blaster on this claim?
Hi Dan!
You might speak with the White Eagle about flapping his wings when you film.
Hi Dan, what you thinking about GoldHog Highbanker to using ? I'm from Saskatchewan and like to go prospecting 2017 on Saskatchewan river.
All gold hog products are fantastic, and Doc from gold hog is always helpful when needed. You can't go wrong with them.
Just a quick question. Why are you using moss with expanded metal in the last half of the sluice and not Gold Hog mats all the way? Good video, thanks.
Wish I could dig that fast!
Dennis Petersen I'm pretty sure he assumes we're not interested in watching him work the dirt. I figure anyone who doesn't want to see him dig or pan at normal speed can fast forward a few minutes.
what is red structure above tunnel in the slide?
Like the way you work not a minute of time wasted
Got to find the gold!
Where is this Thompson river
Not worried about that bear from your earlier video? Yikes!
Nah.

He said that "gram of gold" wasn't all of the gold. There was a huge bin with a lot more gold in it.
can you turn high banker back on without a cleanout ? gold wash out?
Is that north of gold pan ??
North east
nice run man. wish i could get out and mine more. i miss it!
Dan been worried about your beard getting caught in processing plant.. Have seen it happen...bit of face rip offed.. please be carefull...
Thanks for looking out for me.
Love your since of humor and your videos, seen then all from the start.
Is that Gold Hog matting in your box
Yes it is, love the stuff.
Downdraft ?

I do run the high banker hard
Dan rules
Thanks!
high speed is hilarious lol
103 Fahrenheit
Give us a rough estimate how much gold you end up with each month...and then convert to $$.
