I spent 16 years as a Crew Chief at the 146AW, the MAFFS mission was our top priority. When I got to the unit we were doing the MAFFS mission with the original MAFFS units that dispensed the fire retardant out of dual nozzles from the cargo ramp & door. We had under power 1960's E-model C-130s that we had to remove weight (external fuel tanks, all non essential equipment in the cargo compartment, etc.) to gain performance for the low speed & low level flying that the MAFFS mission requires. By 2008 we full transitioned to new C-130J models and the MAFFS 2 units you see in the video.

These big planes have limited uses though. They can move a lot of water but the issue they have is they need to fly back to an airport to fill up. The helicopters are typically the best option since they can find any pond near a fire and just keep on running back and forth. They end up moving more water per hour. For priority I'd go helicopter, then something like the Air Tractor which is a smaller plane that can land in water, then the Canadair's that can also land in water but requires a bigger lake and then these bigger planes.

If Sam thinks the MAFFS mission is unique then he should try going to Keesler AFB and flying in the WC-130J "Weather Bird". They routinely penetrate tropical depressions, storms and hurricanes to get a better idea of where a tropical system could strike. The data they collect helps to narrow the cone of uncertainty from let's say 500 miles to less than 100, something that really matters when it comes to forecasting where a monster hurricane could make landfall!

it's retardant which is used to stop fire spreads. Some fire attack aircraft use water or retardant

I'm just curious. Why don't they service Alaska also? Is it just because the population density, or is it done privately?

National contracts are issued by the National Interagency Fire Center in Boise, ID. These are private contractors. The country has to have every private contract ship committed prior to military MAFFS ship being called out. I don't know why the military in Alaska has no C130's committed for being outfitted with a MAFFS unit. Someone familiar with the National Guard's aviation program in Alaska to answer your question.

My uncle grandpa flew in wildfires and dropped fire retardant but one day he’s plane crashed because the wing fell off

Very Interesting, first time after watching this that a C130 can adapt to install a big water tank to help reduce fires.

A common misconception- they are NOT dropping water on fires. They are dropping retardant. Water is used in training.

That’s crazy how it actually shoves the whole plane forward.
