This video will show you what to look for when you have your touchpad or buttons not working on your dishwasher. Always try cycling the power first. If that works out for you great! If not you will have to make sure you have power to the unit. Once you know you have power you can run the control board test.
For this test you keep power off. Take the door panel off and remove the harness from the main board that goes to the user inter face. Make sure the door is open. Turn power back on and wait 7 seconds than close the door. The drain pump should come on. If it does your main board is good and you need a new touchpad/user interface/control panel.
Hope this helps. Like subscribe and thanks for watching.

Our UI didn’t need replacing, but this gave us the courage and know-how to pop off the dishwasher door, test power, plug and unplug harnesses, run the UI test, and then when we put it all back together, it ran perfectly! I think there were just some loose harnesses that finally got jostled too much and rendered the buttons unusable. But all is good for now! Thank you!!

Thank you so much! My touchscreen stopped working so I followed your directions and removed the door cover. When I did I saw the power unit just dangling. I secured it where it should be and reconnected the input wire from the panel and boom! The touchscreen has always been a pain...I'd have to close and reopen the door before the buttons would activate on touch. It's working better now than ever! You the man!

A most helpful video! A kitchenaid appliance tech said that the unit needed replacement for both UI and main board. I noticed the sump pump working and asked it it was an indication that the main board was ok. Tech guy said it was just residual memory. Not wanting to spend $650 + to repair (discounted by $120 diagnostic fee), I was fortunate enough to come across this video. After ascertaining that the UI is faulty, I ordered one online and made the replacement myself. Thanks so much for sharing this tutorial & saving me $$$ in the process!

Our dishwasher was completely electronically locked up, we could not unlock the controls. The panel lock had locked us out. We had already tried turning off the breaker for minutes and then hours, no help. So we had scheduled a repairman to come out ($140 for initial visit) but then we watched your video. We thought we should try to diagnose so after watching you do it we were brave enough to dig into the door panel, take a few things apart, and then put them all back together. Lo and behold, it all worked fine, guessing the manual unplugging the power helped it reset and unlock the panel so we could press buttons again. It finished running the cycle that had interrupted, and the panel is no longer locked up and beeping constantly at us! Thank you. If we have future problems, we know how to figure out which it is and the cost of the parts is what the repairman would have charged just to come to our house. We cancelled the repair visit.

Update one week later, panel is locked up again. Our model KDTE254ESS2 is not like your video, the user interface comes off with the door panel so you must unplug it from the control board to set the door panel aside. The wiring harness does not easily disconnect on the left side. It appears I need to disconnect the cover over the box to get to disconnect those wires. I might have to wait for hubby to get back in town. Biggest question is, assuming we can do the disconnect, will this test work for our model? Something is definitely flakey and needs to be replaced.

Great explanation! User interface UI (mode selector) was stuck in the locked mode and would not come out (dishwasher unusable). Cycled circuit breaker without any change. Disconnected everything as you instructed, then reassembled and magically it works again - for now. Never really determined if the UI is bad or the control board. My guess is one or both are intermittent. We will see how it behaves for now. Dodged the bullet tonight having to manually wash dishes after coming home from a long work trip. Thank you very much for posting......huge help, learning more about appliance repair every day with these tutorials and saving $.

Their lock modes on their appliances are stupid. Why would anyone develop an appliance that a pet or kid can completely lock out the panel by accident. The only thing kitchen aid makes thats any good is their blenders. they need to stay out of the appliance business. Their non tactile non clicky control panels are equally retarded.

My issue was a burnt out light on the UI for Heated Drying. I know the heating element is working as the water for the wash still heats up. Awesome video . Very clear and concise instructions to trouble shoot. I was able to follow and determine that a new UI was necessary. Just to re-confirm, the pump went on with the UI disconnected and I meter out at 119 V at the power connector. Looks like the UI is almost a third of the cost of a new dishwasher...oh well, still saves me about 400 bucks. Thanks for this awesome video.

Great video! I was able to figure out that my control board was faulty. My user interface seemed to be working but my dishwasher just wouldn't start going. I have a Kitchenaid KDTE304DPA0 - definitely an older unit, which came with the house I bought. After watching your video and following the steps, my drain pump didn't turn on so then I figured it was the control board. I am waiting on the part ($170) but based on your video, I have feel assured that I can change it out myself. I was quoted like $500-$600 to fix it by the Kitchenaid authorized repairman. Thank you for this video!

you did a great job explaining this, I just replaced the user interface panel following your instructions. I kinda think maybe it broke because the old user interface panel was not actually in the tabs, it was just floating there, and I wonder if that made a bad seal where the steam got in from the drying cycle? At any rate, thank you for the video and part number. Great job, you are providing a real service.

GREAT VIDEO!! Super helpful. My dishwasher is a 2 drawer model. (the set up is a bit different) The UI cannot be purchased alone. It comes with the control panel. I don't have a voltage meter tester. But the add rinse aid light is on and the drain pump did run when I did the test. This combination part is quite expensive so I am apprehensive to order the part if the repair could possibly be a fuse or the likes. Dishwasher breaks right before Thanksgiving. UGH

Thank you. Very informative. Our issue is the heat dry button is the only one that does not light and we know the heating element is good as the sani rinse cycle works fine. I’m hoping it is the control panel or the one wire that goes to the heat dry LED light. We ordered a new control panel which hopefully will do the trick. Another viewer said they had the same issue and the control panel fixed it so we are hopeful the same will happen to us. Thanks again

I disassembled the tachpad after I installed the new one. Turned out all small resistors under Statrt and Cancel buttons are frayed. It was surprising as these are only simple LED and tuch buttons. The only explanation I can see is the epoxy they covered the plate to glue it onderneeth. Some epoxy hardeners if do not mixed precisely can be very corrosive.

Appliances today--at least in my house--are so flimsy and unreliable. It seems I have become a full-time appliance tech.
LG washer and dryer (constantly failing), LG dishwasher--out the window after so many problems, Ice-o-Matic has been Ice-OMG after I've rebuilt the lump motor 3x's, LG mini-splits seem to be made out of cardboard, LG TV (vertical band), Electrolux induction stovetop is now a slow-boiler, Nivien tankless water heater is finicky, Samsung fridge is borderline silly. Anyway, thank you for the advice. I did your touchpad diagnosis on my break-a-minute Kitchenaide dishwasher and it failed. Ordered one today. Again, thanks.

Excellent job on this video - very easy to understand. My Kitchenaid wasn't working - the touch controls weren't lighting up at all. I ran the diagnostic test to see if the drain pump would run. It did, so I assumed the control panel was bad. When I put it all back together, the control panel was working again, and the dishwasher ran. Very helpful video. My kitchenaid DW is 15 years old. Lately, it started making grinding noise then it stopped. So I figured the motor is gone. I took the motor out and connected to a power supply and it ran great. But when I put it back on the DW fills with water and then it does not do anything else. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Thanks so much for your troubleshooting video, it enabled me to determine that the touchpad/overlay is faulty. The dishwasher is over 10 years old so parts are difficult to get and expensive. Is there a way to repair a touchpad button?

I've now replaced the Control Panel 3 times. Purchased same model as on your video back in 8/2016. After about 3 years the first Control Panel froze. I purchased a replacement and this lasted about 7 months, purchased another one which lasted about 3 months, and now just replaced a third which lasted 1 week! When I look at the Control Panel circuit board around where the connector is exposed I see some oxidation. Do you think that possibly the steam is infiltrating and shorting out the board? I don't have problem with main board, could there be something else such as High Temp Fuse or control? Would appreciate any help.

Hey So I have a question. My dishwasher is this exact model and the issue is the control board is non responsive and when you close the door it beeps at you for a min and then stops. I performed your test and the pump did NOT turn on and the unit beeped again when shutting the door. Is there a possibility there is a different problem besides the UI?

this Unit is almost identical to Kenmore 66512783K311. I woke up one morning and all the led lights were illuminated. I replaced the control board but the touchpad wasn't working. Even with the touchpad plugged in the drain ran like your video. Looks like I will be buying a touchpad too

I preformed this test and if I'm not mistaken I have a bad control board, my pump didnt run as shown on the video. I also see a visibly burned diode on the board. Any idea where to get a replacement? Been searching for and hour with no luck

Great video! Question. I have Kitchen Aid model KUDS03FTBT2. I replaced thermal limiter on control board and unit ran once then tripped it again. What else should I check or should I replace control board. Thanks in advance.

Hey there I watched your video and replaced the control panel on my kitchenaid dishwasher. Thank you ! The dishwasher works now. Is there a reset to be able to view the panel display on front of the dishwasher ? The display is blank. Much appreciated.

Does the diagnostic mode help diagnose the problem on the KDTM354DSS3? I had a repair person come out and they replaced the part with the touchpad (I think you call that the UI). The problem still persists. When I enter the diagnostic mode....ALL of the LED's on the panel illuminate. Supposedly, the CLEAN light is supposed to give you an error code, but it never blinks after supposedly entering diagnostic mode. Do you have a suggestion for me? I'd like to repair this dishwasher, but the techs are saying replace it.

My dishwasher was used only 12-15 times, then it started to turn itself on randomly and, finally, I tried to stop it during one of these random cycles and it wouldn't stop ("cancel" pad on the UI was not responding). I cut the power source to the unit a couple of times trying to reboot, but the lights just stayed on and the cancel button remained unresponsive.

BEARDED APPLIANCE! GREAT VIDEO SO HELPFULL!! I did the 7 second test you performed and my kitchen aid dishwasher drain pump and it did NOT turn on. I have 120Volts at the Board. My dishwasher finished cycle, I reloaded the dishwasher and the control buttons were dark (nothing at all) hence the problem. I have KitchenAid dishwasher model: KUDE60HXSS5 can you confirm that the drain pump would go on in the 7 second test you described for this model? I hate to purchase both the control board and the touchpad. any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Again!

The start button would not turn the dishwasher on. I checked the switches and all were good. I found one of the standoffs, pin holding the PC board was broken off. When pushing the button the board would move and not engage the switch. I ran a small screw in the place of the standoff . It holds the board in place now so the board won’t move and the switch will now make engage. Save m a grand on buying a new dishwasher. Good video to make checks on your unit though. Thanks

After a six hour power outage my instrument panel is not responding at all. Only one tiny light is on for the ‘Light’ (wash) setting. I have to pull out the appliance, unplug and plug back in yet. So far I have checked the circuit breaker - flipped the switch on/ off several times. Can a power outage cause damage to an appliance like this? Or is it maybe coincidental? Prior to this the flimsy nylon ‘hing’ had snapped and broke. The door does not open gradually - just drops hard and fast all the way down if I don’t hold onto the door! So I still have to replace that! A video on replacing that item would be great! Also, I would really appreciate a basic demo on how to pull my dishwasher out from the wall to unplug it and plug back in - and do any work like replacing that little ‘hinge’. Thank you!
