Burkina Faso's Wild Obsession with Horses

- In Burkina Faso, horse-riding is more than a leisure pastime, it is the tradition, the love and lore of an entire nation. With Burkina Faso's Insane Obsession with Horses it is no coincidence that the country's coat of arms depicts two horses, that the coveted prize of Africa’s biggest film festival, Fespaco held every two years in the capital, Ouagadougou, is a Golden Stallion trophy, that the nickname of the national football team is ‘Les Etalons’ which translates to The Stallions or that the most common surname for boys here is Ouedraogo, which means.. You guessed it, Stallion in the predominant native language.
In countries populated by dozens of different ethnic groups, national identity is often an elusive pursuit of identity, but here in Burkina Faso, one thing is sure: that identity reflects the country’s traditional fascination and is rooted to a longstanding relationship with a beloved animal with a mane, tail and hooves.

As an American this channel is quickly growing to be one of my favorites for covering events, histories, and cultures I wouldn’t otherwise hear about in a far too neglected continent. Keep it up!
Wow, thank you so much! Glad you've been enjoying the videos!
@@RisenAfrica the video of the dancing horses, is actually the dagomba tribe of northern Ghana 🇬🇭
It is neglected because African being people, acts like people in front of American eyes made the American public see them as people.
If American working class see North Korean just living their life, they won't want to support more economic sanctions on North Korea then.
Your country like to dehumanize, then demonize people from country that you are about to invade.
I was interested in learning horseback riding as a kid. Here in America it obviously has no great importance in most of the country, it's not cheap to take lessons. And why bother? We have roads and cars...
I hope Burkina Faso's cultural ties to horses never goes away. Modern life is overall good but thinking back to the culture of my great grandparents I feel modern life often sterilizes, gets rid of generational culture, _especially_ those aspects that were beneficial.
Very well said @Phoenix Knight. They should hold on to their culture
Such a great educational source on Africa and it's peoples. Thank you
Many thanks @SQuID. Cheers!
This is a really great channel.
Nice to hear it @Blockavelli.. Many thanks!
You’ve convinced me that the Game of Thrones creators are referencing Burkina Faso History, I’ve never watched the show, but it is now impossible to convince me otherwise 😤 😁 🐴
Makes sense, right? Spread the word😂😂
Alot of stuff is about africa they just hide it

Great channel to learn more about Africa, and a fascinating video. Thank you and greetings from Finland! The summer here is way too hot at the moment, about +27 C, I'm melting 😅
Greetings @Qtamo Music. So happy to hear you're enjoying and getting value from the videos😀 Hopefully the cool videos will help with the sweltering heat lol
In Africa 27 C would be warm not hot.I know Finland can get cold in winter, the snow gets heavy up there.
Ouagadougou is the most African word ever
You bet😀

So true! Cheers @RG
@@RisenAfrica 🙏
💯👍
Best way to learn about Africa is to learn from Africans ,these days there is so many Pan African platforms that are very educational, you can learn much more from them than anything they teach in Amerikkka,if at all they teach anything about Africa that does not have a Colonial bent.
@@lemigod4475 🙏👍
I always learn so much from this channel
So happy to hear. Spread the word😀
Unafanya kazi poa sana. Endelea hivo hivo.
Asante sana! Cheers!
George RR Martin the writer of game of thrones admits he took the geography, people etc from places and cultures throughout history.
He acknowledges it? Good to know
Awesome! I was always told horses could not survive in West Africa. This video disproves that belief. I love horses and ride as much as I can. So I was enthralled with this presentation.
Too many lies, horses 🐎🐎🐴🐴have been first bred in the whole sahara/sahel more then 4.5/6 thousands years ago
Look for rupestrian saharan depictions.......
Even the first chariots can be seen, animal domestication and so on,in the time north africa was green 🍏 and fruitful.....
A long long long time before even egypt I mean these africans are partially credited as founders of egypt
Great to hear @jahchannah.. Cheers!
Amazing video as always, thank you for inspiring me ❤️
You are so welcome @May! My pleasure😀
Waaaw, this is so interesting 🤔 👀 😅 kool, the drogo comparison is so crazy wow
Was done with the script then the similarity of the names just hit me. Had to write it in and reworked the ending😀. cheers!
Great story. I wasn't heard of horses in Africa before history, and it is Burkina Faso.
Much appreciated @Drew Happy to help. Cheers!
Look through the countless African kingdoms that have come and gone and you will see horses were used for centuries in Africa and some even used chariots
West Africans , Northern Africans and the people of the Horn of Africa were using horses before the Europeans came to Africa... for your information, not all Africans were hunters and gatherers...
Many African countries have horses for centuries before arrival of Europeans,Places like Egypt,Sudan,Ethiopia,Ghana,Burkina Faso,Mali,Mauritania have documented stories of famous horseman dating back centuries.
Sungi empire had a an army of over 100,000 with 10- 13,000 🐎 soldiers so it's been in Africa
A great and educative video! Keep it up!!
Many many thanks😀 Will do
U haven’t had of Northern Nigerians 🤣🤣they are obsessed with horse like damn
I'll check them out
@@RisenAfrica It would be nice if you do. Kanem Bornu Empire (with its capital in modern day Northern Nigeria) is well known for Horses. With its 200,000 strong heavy Cavalry army at its height, the Kanem-Bornu empire encompassed Northern Nigeria, whole of Niger and Chad, Southern Libya, Northern Cameroon, and Western Sudan. Northern Nigeria is the main trading hub of Horses in West Africa and Borno in particular was referred to as the 'Stable' or 'Horse Capital' of Sub-Saharan Africa.
Awesome Knowledge, and congrats in advance for 100,000 Subscribers.
Thank you so much @Savage😀😀 You've just made it so real. Cheers!
Keep this amazing content always coming and I know this channel will grow beyond measure. 💯✌️
Appreciate that bro! Many thanks for the support!
Well well, horses, for me this sort of explains Thomas Sankara's bicycle. Burkinabés gotta ride.
Makes perfect sense😀
Can u cover the military coupe in Burkina also
Great suggestion @Dereick.. I'll consider it
Glory be unto ELELOHEYISRA'EL YAHSHUAH HA'MOSHIACH.
This can lead to a really eco friendly mode of transport if we research more and more. Cause our ancestors rode around in horses.
If we can have horses , then we don't need cars and other automobiles.
I can relate @Dominic Thomas! Most answers are in abandoned culture
Yes, I was thinking about the similarity of the the African community’s name and the fictional characters name!
Striking right..?
I sink that in the the dragons série they inspirated in the mongols or turks of the central Ásia , but its possíble.
The dont know what is on the writter head
Its possible
Amazing
Thank you! Cheers!
@@RisenAfrica Thanks for this brilliant content, never miss a video.
@@Pedro-ro6kf You bet! Happy to hear you enjoyed it. My pleasure.

Much appreciated!
But are horses really suited as a species to the Sahel? This really does not seem like an environment that suits such an animal.
Good question mate.. The Sahel's climate is similar to, but less extreme than, the climate of the Sahara desert. Therefore lacking of sand dunes that would be unsuitable for horses.
Interesting
Many thanks!
Incredible piece
Much appreciated @Musty Bryce
