      Close your fingers on your right hand and place right in front of a dog or cat. And both would move their heads forward to smell it. Now try it with a Horse. And it will be the same behaviour provided you have respected it's space first.

    As group/herd animals, horses don't understand equality and fairness. They understand hierarchy. Herd safety demands that the strongest individual leads.

    Hi Rick, I am watching a show on our Arkansas Educational Television Network about horses. One thing jumped out at one. "If only we let horses be themselves." Pretty much like I hear you say about letting horses be horses. I thought I would share that with you. I never like the bits. When I first ran across you, I learned a lot from you, but two things stood out that bits and horseshoes were bad for horses, and that was something new and interesting to hear. "Wow! Really?" and after I thought about it, it made perfect sense. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for what you do for the horse, and how you are the horses' strongest advocate. Ignore the BWs.

Spent the last two years with “wild” horses, and I’ve incorporated so much of what you’ve taught into my interactions with them. I help them, yet I always recognize that “you never enter the same river twice”. May they remain free. What a gift. God I love them, and I love all that you are regarding them. Thank you.

    my teacher has a dog that runs up to cats barking and being all mean and the cats always runs away scared, once there was a cat who didn't care about the dog and kept sitting and mining his own thing, the dog just stood there and didn't know what to do since the cat didn't give any reaction.

      I was a postal person whom used a voice on guard dogs and they all had the same reaction. I call it the "Sha Na Na"..character on Martin, very high pitched voice. The dogs would stop barking, look at me with their heads tilted. One homeowner was amazed his dogs weren't attacking me, accused me of feeding em. He knew the character, told me to fix them, that I had broke em and he was gonna call my boss. It even worked on German trained dogs whom didn't know English. Pissed my friend off..those were her dogs..highly trained and I had them wagging their stumps.

You don't miss a thing and I have really learned everything worth a F about horsemanship from watching your evaluations on a steady basis. It feeds my horse love and it works perfectly with no nonsense only truth comes from your lessons....let's just say it helps and it feels awesome that we both share a very deep love for horses. Paying attention and truly having a desire for the best interest of any horse I have the honor to be next to...I don't want to be negligent or ignorant...there are no excuses for all levels of poor horsemanship. Thanks Rick.

    I love all of your horse herd knowledge Rick. I’ve always wondered who the head horse in the herd is. We have a singular gelding who is the lowest because he is learning how to be in a herd due to being kept in a stall his whole life. It’s not a wonder why he has so many anxiety problems, but he’s the only horse at our ranch that is not classified as a ‘rescue’. At least our rescue horses had herds and pasture but I think he was worse off tbh. We have two mares, my mare absolutely does not let the gelding get anywhere close to the other mare. She actually acts a lot like this stallion with the snaking and ears back when approaching the gelding. But I cannot figure out which mare is top dog. The other mare gives a protest kick and backs away some times but at other times she kicks and makes my mare move away when my mare gets close. They are attached and both freak out if the other horse leaves. When they first met they didn’t even take notice of each other, at least that I remember. They both have the same reaction when it comes to food usually they pin their ears and back away at the same time if they react. Maybe I need a slow-mo camera 😂😂😂 my mare seems to be the one to have to put others in their place but since my mare doesn’t let anyone near the other mare I can’t tell how she reacts with the gelding or previous horses in the pasture as of late. (She used to be low man on the totem pole in her previous home I am told though)

    I agree that there are natural psychological differences between males and females. But I also think nuture plays a big part in a persons mentality. We tend to coddle and over protect our female children more than our male children. We put emotional thinking into their brains from a young age. Girls who are raised more like boys tend to be more independent and logical.
    Ps. I love how proud and cocky that stallion is. Brimming with attitude and personality and purpose. I could watch him all day. He is a born leader.

    I dont know why its so hard to believe that you can study animal behavior and learn to interoperate what they are doing or saying. It does take years and a lot of observation but anyone can learn it,he has clearly studied and been around horses for a long time and has picked up their behavior.

  • @liz6595
    @liz6595 5 лет назад +20

    It makes sense
    As a mare your job is to choose the stronger stallion. The one who will protect you and your kids.
    there have been documented cases where a female leaves a stallion to be with another but the majority of the time its survival.
    Women and men are not equal but that doesn't mean one is better. Because you can't compare them like that.
    It's a difference in job. A difference in instinct. How your brain or body develops. How your hormones develop. It's all different
    Why do you think you see girls going for the providers or the guys that seem to have their head together
    Its instinct. You want the stability.
    If you were a horse and ran off with some scrawny stallion who never won a fight. you'd be dead because when push comes to shove you would be left without protection.
    Everyone in the horse world plays their part and they dont get butthurt when they loose a fight or something.
    They have connections but they also have to live their life for them and the betterment of their foals.
    Better stallion. Better babies.
    In my opinion I would have no issue being in s herd of horses as a mare and being taken by the strongest stallion around.
    Just would make sense.

    • @slsthewriter1299
      @slsthewriter1299 4 года назад +3

      I'd be careful with saying women and men are not equal, and then say that doesn't mean one is better. They are equal, just different, you know? Like Yin and Yang; both sides have the same level of space, and therefore equal, but they are different because they're designed to _compliment_ each other.

    • @mageofdoomsie1598
      @mageofdoomsie1598 2 года назад +5

      Exactly!! A mare can and will tell a stallion when she’s not ready, and stallions are smart enough to stay out of her range. When humans get involved with all the ropes and chains, thats when it becomes dangerous for both mare and stallion.

    This video was really informative! I did equine therapy a couple years ago and worked with a horse named Freckles who was the lowest horse in his herd. Our very first meeting, he pushed me around to the point the equine specialist had to intervene to keep me from getting bit. Despite this, we understood he wasn't being a vicious horrible monster, but just establishing what relationship we would have. I wouldnt say we were ever equal from that point on, I think he knew he was higher, but we had some level of respect where he would stop doing drive bys on me and we could even walk next to each other (spaced respectfully) which was really special. Freckles helped me learn boundaries and stuff and I really enjoyed working with him.
    This lil guy in the video reminds me of him in a way. This was a great video to learn about horse behavior and thinking. Maybe someday when I do equine therapy again, I can be more informed on some of their body language.

    That one foal was a big baby. When Cocoa was born, the breeder was headed to the barn where another mare was foaling. She glanced out to the pasture and saw that Cocoa had arrived. She thought, "what a big, handsome colt". When she moved them to the barn, she was surprised to find it was a filly! She definitely was a beautiful, typical looking Morgan. Great video, beautiful colors on those horses, and so healthy!! Thanks for the critique and the lesson on how a horse thinks.

    I love your behavior videos. My two have changed a lot now that they are of of the herd at the barn and its been fun to watch them switch who is higher and who is lower... for that moment. Jack was always lower and I’ve seen him push Jarvis more than before. Jarvis doesn’t care... he knows how to push back and Jack always yields. Lol LOVE horse behavior!

    Belated Happy Thanksgiving Rick. Great commentary on a beautiful herd. Horse on right at 19:20 looks like he has some dredlocks in his mane.

    what they.re doing why they.re doing it and what they are going to do next. I agree, only years or a special ability to observe horses gives this gift.
