- In this episode of Invasive Brews we travel to Kentucky Lake in Kentucky to volunteer with commercial fishermen that are fighting back against the invasive Silver Carp. One of 4 species of invasive Asian carp that are in invading North America's freshwater aquatic ecosystems.
After an 8 hour day and 5,000 pounds of fish later we head to a nearby brewery to relax and enjoy some amazing craft beers and make new friends. The Dam Brewhaus in Benton Kentucky.

Grass carp are delicious fried whole. Make diamond slits across fish, rub in corn or potato starch, salt, pepper and fry until golden brown. You can pour a ginger and garlic or chilli sauce over the top which is delicious. They don't have a lot of bones and they have a great flavour.
Great eating.
That goes for all carp.
As Andrew Zimmern says about such invasive species, "Can't beat 'em? EAT 'em!"
If the government or public/private groups can subsidize for each invasive species caught, it can draw in decent amount of crowds for tournaments. It would help the towns, as well as have an incentive for visitors. Kentucky is one of 9 states I've yet to visit, and fishing is my primary hobby (my two kids enjoy fishing as well).
grass carp can be filleted and they have less bones than silver carp

Ya all need to ask some Asian Americans about the Silver carp. I just watched a video of a guy cleaning and cooking the silver carp. It doesn't have what other carp have- a mud vein (which must be removed during cleaning or it spoils the taste of the fish). This means that the silver carp can be cleaned and cooked.
I myself used to catch and eat carps out of a local park pond in Denver, Co. I had to remove the mud vein, but the neat was white and tasted good. I had so many that I threw a large family fish fry and fed it to our large family without telling them what kind of fish it was. They guessed bass, or crappy or perhaps catfish. My brother in law said that was the best tasting fish he'd ever eaten. He pressed me to tell him what it was. When he heard it was carp he was angry, but he couldn't change what he had said. If more people would just try some carp to eat, then they would fish for them.
I like to catch carp, as far as game fish are concerned, they put up a good fight- jump out of the water and are great fun to catch

Im from miami.. we eat anything that swims including venomous lion fish (one of my fav).. fish is fish, if it taste good eat it!
@@invasivebrews Not on a fly rod but on a regular fishing rod. They jump out of the water and give a good fight. My idea of fishing fun!
Yeah they’re an issue for sure and have changed the lake for the worse. With that said those abandoned buildings and businesses shown along US 68 in Aurora have been like that long before the Asian carp showed up. Kentucky Lake went through a big change about 20-25 years ago when the milfoil and other native grasses died out due in part to several years of flooding. The bass fishing never recovered and Aurora has slowly been dying ever since.

There’s been an effort to prevent them getting into the Great Lakes by trying to construct dams and fences along the lesser tributaries as a stopgap, but there’s no guarantee how successful they will be.
The silver and the big head are actually very good-tasting fish, and the Y bones are very easy to pick if the fish is large enough. The grass carp, on the other hand, does taste like a normal carp because they stay in the mud and towards the bottom.

In Asia or even in Asian grocery stores in the US, this type of fish is quite popular. We should catch them and export to that part of the world. We should treat it like Tilapia which is a kind fish engineered to grow fast and protein rich food source for Africa/Asia poors. I bet Carp is better than those Ocean monster fish that most of us called “ White” fish in McDonalds meals

@@invasivebrewsI've seen another Video, where there's a Company in Kentucky, that packages these fish and Sells them Back to China. Apparently China's Rivers Are to DIRTY for these fish to prosper. This Company Also makes fertilizer for vegetables gardens.

Several different people and agencies brought certain species here for “good intentions” but this intentions are out now
I just caught a 52in 60-80lb Bighead on the Mississippi last week. I cleaned her. No sense letting her going to waste. Big problem anywhere on the Mississippi river basin.
How do you prepare it? I've only had it fried.
@@invasivebrews I have only fried it. I am thinking about taking some of this one and grinding it to make fish cakes. I need to look more at recipes.

There is only ONE species of carp i have anytime for at all here in the UK the Crucian Carp they do not get to the monster size of other carp . My big gripe with most carp is they get into a pool that is nice and clear and turn it into a mud pit screws the water for everything else

The last couple weeks we've been catching them on the Ohio river at a local dam. Most of the ones were are catching are full of eggs. The dam I'm fishing ive fished for over 35 years and this is the first year I've seen them there. The one's we're catching are in the 30 to 40lb range with some bigger.
I know it's getting alot harder to get shad for catfish bait anymore.
I've used the carp for cutbait and it seems to work pretty well. I would prefer to use shad as well but I guess if you can't beat em use em. I'm sorry that they've made it to your spot and are taking over.

I've seen that too I have yet to have any luck with it, I hear a soft white grub lure works great.
I fish the Ohio River at least 3 times a week and back in the early 90's it used to be a magical fishery. U could catch big nice hybrid stiped bass, stripers, smallmouth, sauger, walleye, catfish, ect. And throughout the years, ive seen the fishing go downhill drastically!!! Carps, over fishing and keeping everything, trash, have all played a part in hurting the fishery. Used to be able to catch a boatload of skipjack herring. Before covid, noone was fishing for skipjack, now everybody and their grandmother is a baitdealer and theyll keep 300 fish. Now u cant hardly catch 5.
That's really heartbreaking to hear. I worked as a fisheries biologist for several years and saw the same thing in several areas.
Put them through a grinder feeding the catfish or crawfish. Them catch and sell the catfish or crawfish.
That's about triple the work. Just sell the Silver Carp. I've seen 3 chefs and half a dozen fishermen say these are clean and tasty fish. Plus, they can be fixed many different ways.
Some good salesmen are going to get rich off this once they figure out a good "Pitch". Hint, Hint, Hint.
Remove licensing need for carp. Use to can, make fertilizer, anything. Like wild pigs, they can take over

To be honest, I'd rather eat silver carp that came from a Kentucky lake than tilapia from God knows where. I wish I could buy silver carp filets for a couple bucks a pound and let me worry about getting of those tiny bones...
I had it and it was really good! I wish people would change their minds about carp being a slimy meat or a trash fish.

Seems to me you could fish them for cat food and dog food as well. Pretty sure that protein would be fine for either.
I have purchased dog treats made from them.

I don't know the reason behind the hate towards the Asian carp. They are the tastiest fish I have ever had.
I have tried them a lot of different ways and I agree that they are good! I try to convince people that they aren't a "trash" fish and that they can be used as a resource.

As a Carp Angler i love catching those Commom Carp, luckly here in Chicago Commons are vasive but the invasive carp like big heads are very delicious

There is so many ways too cook carp, I dont know why we dont eat this fish. Tilapia is garbage fish with all the antibiotics n the way they grow them. Carp is naturally grown could be fish by commercial fishermen.

Tilapia is the Least nutritious fish there is, yet it is the most eaten because it is cheap. It NEEDS to be replaced by the silver carp.
Maybe some of us "Baby Boomer Salesmen" need to come out of retirement and travel the river towns to make another retirement income.
The government should subsidize fishermen to catch these things and processing plants to process them and send them to food banks and pantries to feed the poor. They're totally edible and by all accounts taste good, nothing like the common carp, which by all accounts tastes real muddy.
No!!! Gov. Subs. kill industry. We don't have enough tax dollars to put a small dent in this problem. What we need is a market for the fish and fishermen will try to fish them into extinction.
i feel like you should have said more abt the naturalised common carp. Theyre not invasive anymore and work well with the ecosystem. Great source of food for bass, pike, perch, crappie catfish, and so on.
When they are smaller they do fall prey to predators but they like other carp species grow to large for predators. They can then affect water quality, cause algal blooms, uproot aquatic plants, and deter their regrowth. They are naturalized but still have negative impacts. They are fun to catch and pretty good to eat!
This thing cleans the water. but it also eats other fishes food.

i feel like they could be a really cheap bait fish
if you cross genetic with other species of fish. y-bone will disappear and you will have new species of monster fish. which is ok because you will have new kind of food.

They make this harder than what it is. Heavily fish them for food, fertilizer, and pet products. You can send them in abundance as food for other countries. Have U.S. fisheries and farms increase producing native species for a national blitz of releasing back into the wild for a period of time. Prior to the release, farm, release, and manage natural predators to begin the first assault. Bring back Otters, Minks, Snapping Turtles, and Gar.

Let's break it down: .15 a lb x 5lb avg fish = .75 a fish. Gas $5.00 gallon. Ice cost, permits, replacing nets, those plate boats are $$$ no ones getting rich commercial fishing for them.
@@Mr_Clean Don't look at the average size, look at total weight caught. One crew caught 28,000 pounds in two days. That's $4200.00
That's extreme. Figure 20,000 pounds a week. That won't put a dent in the problem and that's $3,000.00
A commercial fisherman will bring in more than 20,000 pounds a week. It's his livelihood. He has to make money, and he knows how. There just has to be a market for it. A good salesman will fix that.
If I were 30 or 40 years younger, I'd be that salesman.

Asian carp is a vague term for 4 different species, Silver, Black, Grass and Bighead carp are all “Asian carp”. We were only working with Silver and Grass that day.

The carp in Asia have almost been wiped out by overfishing.
One video, I think it was KY Afield's, had a brain claiming partially due to pollution levels their reproduction rates are much lower. I have no idea if they were right but the claim was made.

If all the spoiled brats get over it that is not a bad tasting fish. I know its bony but its delicious when prepped right and we need to get it out of the lakes. Think its way too far gone but we can always call our Chinese friends and let them loose bet they will put a big dent.

Funny as all get out. The biggest baddest predator that makes it's living catching fish has a fish he can't catch to much of and the state is willing to pay to catch these fish how dense dose this man have to be NOT to see the Golden opprotunity right in front of him . Orvel Reddenbacker would have figured a way to have fried fish dipped in his cornmeal made at his grist mill from corn grown on his farms fertilized by fish fertilezer he made from the fish he caught .You got the whole circle and you can't see the brass ring .r he made from the fish he caught .You got the whole circle and you can't see the brass ring .
The issue is the market. Nobody buys it so the price is super low. There are only a few markets that but it for food grade and they get saturated quick. People hear the word carp and immediately cringe. I had it and it’s good so I try to advocate for it to increase the market so that it is a cash cow for these guys.

@@invasivebrews This is a Fishermans dream a fish they want you to catch as much as possible ,cha ching I get with a restaurant and sell cheap to get started looking for the chain to sell fish to . Hell if I had all the fish I would find a way to make it taste good how about a cooking contest with a little $$$ to cook the best ?
@@steventodd5678 I 100% agree we can use them as a resource. They sell as agriculture fertilizer and I was just told by the guy in the video crab bait is a growing market for them. I really like the contest idea! Might have to hold one!

They are working on processing plants in that area to do just that. The thing is many people don't like the word "carp" and won't eat it because it's a "trash" fish

In most rivers like the Mississippi, the Arkansas..some lakes. You local fish and game can tell you.
I’ve heard they’ve made it into the Wabash watershed in Indiana, I have not heard of them getting into the Maumee as of yet, though.
