You all should learn how to ID species before going out and taking part in this kind of harvest. The majority of fishes you speared and pulled up were native Sucker species mixed in with some non-native/invasive Carps. Those native fish are important for the aquatic ecosystem to function properly. If you’re planning to eat them, great but if you’re just removing them thinking you’re doing something beneficial, you’re wrong.

This reminds me people used to do this type of spearing back on the early 60's they did it for food staple for the winter.when they would get the holes cut with one man cross cut saws were used. Then us kids were sent up and down stream with sticks. We would walk back and forth across the river tapping the ice to drive the fish. Fish would go down stream and push back up stream. Black suckers made good soup, white and red horse suckers were good pickled, carp were for smoking. In the 80's I used to can red horse and carp I used to put 2 table spoons of ketchup in each jar this turned the meat pink like salmon.. we called it mock salmon (a poor man's salmon) . As a kid my family would go and help these families spear. They used to put corn down in the slots cut to see the fish. But DNR said that they couldn't use corn. Because the fish would feed on the corn. So they used sand much like what your doing in your video. The DNR at the time had no problem with taking a few game fish because they needed the food.. If there wasn't enough ice they would go out in boats. No motors needed our poles were 15 to 20 feet long.
I'm from south eastern Minnesota and most of the rivers were shallow.
Hope you like this bit of history. It sure was fun.
Oh ya when it was really cold my dad would start a fire on the ice to stay warm. Some people said that was nuts! But in all the years we had a fire we never melted through or feel in.

Hopefully, this type of spearing will be considered wanton waste in the near future.
