Just to be clear, this isn’t the last episode in the playthrough! I plan to make a bonus episode where I’ll show off some of the stuff that happens after the first successful run plus multiple(?) videos covering my no-hack run stream, which was a ton of fun! I also really want to cover some of the new multiplayer content, so look forward to that as well!
Pearl literally hitting them with the Gay Pride Beam. Oh my goodness... While it definitely has the impact of a finale, the story is far from over, yep! It's a bit strange, but that is how roguelikes tend to go, requiring the finale to be bested multiple times before the True Finale unfolds. So while perhaps not as impactful (or terrifying) as Tartar or as flashy as Octavio, Order/Smollusk definitely isn't a damp squib to wrap things up on. And... c'mon, the sequence where you get every color chip in the game resulting in a comically broken weapon as Ebb & Flow amps up to match? That was honestly amazing. (And apparently, if you pause and check the rainbow palette, you can still click the supersaturated color chips, which will play the "chorus" of Ebb & Flow when pressed. Cute!) The Overlorder fight, if anything, is at least unique. It's nice to have it be so rhythm-based, every audio cue and attack having their sounds synced to the beat. While I personally would have expected a boss that adapts to counter your build, Overlorder more presents a variety of difficult challenges (in the attacks you must dodge + the moving portals) you can overcome with a variety of different strategies. Overlorder *does* spawn different enemies depending on your build/weapon, though... or, at least tries different combinations each run. Never was able to puzzle the math on that out myself. And Smollusk, while... being a bit of a nothingsushi at the end... is actually pretty interesting. But I imagine we'll see your thoughts on that in the "next season" of this playthrough. I do love their design, though. Not just the name, but the "uwu" speak as well... Nintendo as a whole may not quite get the internet, but their art/design/writing team(s) at least always have their finger on the pulse of cultural references. (... Which, I guess is super-important, considering Splatoon's whole theming of "the power of music & culture"...). I honestly can't help but read out their lines in a squeaky voice, even when I'm alone. It's just so silly. "I'm youw're wowst nighmawe!"
Yeah, it was a solid ending! I personally wish Overlorder had another phase, because the max saturation sequence, while really cool, is pretty much a playable cutscene, and the boss was already basically a scaled up version of the Marina fight. I will say that I came to appreciate the fight more on repeat runs, but character wise I think Smollusk is just okay. I do appreciate the lore drops it gives you later on lol
Just finished all the pallets the other day. Definitely missed having non-combat levels like in all the other single player campaigns. (Yes, I'm one of those weirdos that liked the 8-ball levels in Octo Expansion, and also liked the "create this statue with the crates" levels, cuz they were something different)
Yeah, I'm glad they tried something new with Side Order, but I personally am a much bigger fan of the more traditional campaigns. I honestly hope they bring back the Pearl drone in some form because there's a ton of potential for platforming with the glide ability
I can get the not buying extra lives thing. Challenge is fun. Personally I roll with one extra life, gives me a little more leniency if I do dumb stuff (or if the game bs's me), but I run only broken armour jump from the other "personal improvement" hacks, to keep the challenge up.
glad to see someone else who only rolls with one life, funnily enough i do it for the exact same reason as you do: the stakes of not having a do-over makes everything more thrilling. i _have_ gotten some of the extra lives hacks for the sake of completionism but i always disable them
Can't wait to hear your overall thoughts and lore and speculation. I know there's gotta be things in the backgrounds and in the dev diaries and photo unlocks and stuff that are going way over my head.
I cant say how many times ive died to overlorders stupid reefsliders lol. Especially when you dont know to expect them the first time around! Edit: the credits song ABSOLUTELY slaps, if this is Acht's true style, the classical elements mixed w the DJ aspects, that will be wild new territory for splatoon music and im hyped lol
6:01 OMG THIS IS FORESHADOWING THE REWARDS FOR 8'S PALLETE CUZ YOU LITERALLY GET THE PIC FOR WHAT THEM TWO LOOKS BACK THEN OMG I ONLY JUST NOTICED 4 MONTHS LATER

Yay!
what about the glenn of fiddler
honestly I'm just hoping that you were on stream when you got the "stop reading my diaries out loud" line
fun fact! i think the way that 8 was laying down in the rhythm sequence is a reference to 8 waking up in the Deepsea Metro for the first time :3
I love that the final twist is Pearl just Killer Wail's the boss to death with her nuclear bomb voice.
S tier callback.

2 homing, a piercing or two, and Charger is absurd. I say that as someone who's garbage with Charger.
bro is underestimating every single upgrade

24:38 i did a side glance at my phone when i heard "very very interesting" and then you just confirmed the reference lol
I won with Pearl's pallet first, but I reached Floor 30 with Marie's pallet first.
