I can’t stress the importance of this topic enough, because coordinating all of the elements in your shot is ultimately one of the most important things you will do on set as a photographer. So today's video will examine color theory and using a color wheel calculator to match wardrobe, props and backgrounds.

I love how you don't rush things and speak at a moderate pace, which is super helpful to us to whom English is not native.

Hi John. Your friend from across the pond here. I love this upload. I've been using that webpage for some time myself when I need inspiration for a product that I might be shooting. What a bonus video this is for people. I will be starting to shoot some portrait work to add to my portfolio that I am reworking to expand my avenues and will see what I can do about booking your time for an hour to critique and to learn more about portrait photography. Why anyone wouldn't do this if they are serious about improving, is beyond me. Unfortunately I cannot attend your workshops but would love to learn more. Take care and keep safe.
Happy Saturday Evening Pete! Thank you so much! I have a new option that might be a good choice and its called the Academy with John Gress. Members get access to a twice monthly live Q&A and critique over zoom (I might make them weekly). Right now there are only about 10 people on the call and I would love to critique your work, anonymously if you're interested. There is a three day trial and the next meeting is tomorrow at 10AM CT (UTC -5). johngress.com/academy/

I'm so glad to hear it! Thanks!
I think this would also work great for food photography. Especially people who are trying to place the right props and background color to match the food. What color flowers to pick for the table if choosing that for decorations. I have a classmate who is working on food photography so I shared this with them. Great information all around. Even with product photography. Say I landed a gig with Nike for example and they handed me red air Jordan's. What color background do I use if I am not using black and white? What if any company specifically states they want the photo of their product in color. What colors do I choose to place in the scene. This would help you choose colors that would work together.
The title is really just for SEO and my POV. Color theory works with all forms of art.
I love this, thanks John. Nice hair cut by the way! =)

Thank you so much!
Another great video John. I have been interested in using more colour harmony for a while now. A couple of questions I've not been able to find the answer to. Do you put the skin tone colour into your mix or is it just the colour of everything else in the frame? And in post, do you adjust the colours to match the exact colour references as the harmony chart you've decided on?
Thanks Jamie! I would look at the color calculations as a guide and not something you have to match exactly. For the most part, I don't consider the skin tone, as I think it would severely limit the color combinations, but I could see an argument as to why you should consider it. I haven't changed colors in post before to specifically to match the color wheels.
So where is this color harmony located?
Have you found that these colors need to be exact opposite or I am assuming you adjust them as needed.
Hi Curt. I just you color theory as a guide to help me design the scene. The colors don't have to be exact, just close.
@@JohnGress thank you John
Thank you!
I have this question....
How to know when to use each color type?!
Whenever it suits you.
@@JohnGress I see.. Thank you!
How can I get or download the color wheel calculator
This is my question too
Can you send me color book s.
I don't understand your question.
color harmony is 50 of your photo session 30 lights and 20 you and your camera
