Really good breakdown of color theory. Just the right time to come upon this video as I've been wanting to get started on a study of color. Thank you for the "push" to get moving because it's not as complicated as it first seems.
This is one of the best video in RUclips explaining about colours... Explanation is very neat and easily understandable... Thank you for making wonderful video..❤❤❤
Thanks so much for your kind words Ravi!! This was a fun one to do and I was re-learning a few things when writing and filming it. As always thanks for watching my friend 😁👍
Thanks so much Paul!! It really does take a lot of time... but they are fun to write, shoot and edit! Just a shame RUclips is leaning towards the "junk food entertainment" videos, instead of helping us educators build communities of greater learnings and understandings of more and more complex subjects. As always thanks for watching 😁👍
sir, your channel deserves far more views, the presentation is fantastic, invaluable for a keen amateur like myself. ive binge watched so many. looking at the old astro stuff next. keep em coming !
Thanks so much for your kind words!! I keep telling youtube that, but they never seem to listen!! 😆🤦🏻♂️ Great to hear they are helping, I have loads more in my back catalogue so make sure you check those out. Thanks for watching 😁👍
This is one of those videos that you tag for future referencing. An excellent tutorial packed into 9 mins. I pick my camera brand by the color science. You would be surprised how much they differ. I have an old Olympus e-5 with a Kodak sensor. It still produces some of the best color representations I have ever seen. I still use it for shots of flowers and landscapes.
You are right, it is amazing how different they really are!! At one time, I was shooting multi angle videos with three different brands and it was interesting when trying to balance them all out. As always thanks for watching 😁👍
Your videos are always so easy to understand and grasp. I swear I've learnt more in the past few months since finding your channel than in the previous 5 years. Also, did chuckle at the Colour spelling 😃
That's great to hear that my videos have been helping Simon... I always like to have some kind of dig at the language differences from across the pond! 😆 Thanks for watching 😁👍
Haha!! I will not bow down to our cousins from across the pond... it is called English for a reason!! 😆 Great to hear you are enjoying it Murray!! Thanks for watching 😁👍
Great video, I found this really useful as I'm not the best when it comes to colours. I'll have to save and watch it several times before it all sinks in. Thank you.
Thanks so much Richard!! It really is something you have to work on. It took me a while to start thinking about it in the field, but once you get a few, it really is an eye opener. Thanks for watching 😁👍
Getting back into photography after many moons and only a light hobbyist before (OK the Dad with Dslr). Many gaps you are helping me fill.@@mikesphotography
Thanks so much for your kind words!! Great to hear... as I get a few more in the series released, I'll link the playlist to the top of my RUclips home page so it is easy to find. Thanks for watching 😁👍
That was really interesting. I last did ColoUr Theory thirty years ago at art college and did not realise that there was an RGB wheel. Every day is a school day. I've also moved away from my ancient Lightroom 5.7 to using DxO Photolabs and I really miss the ability to Split Tone. Sadly that's a no-go area. However when video editing, I try to aspire to the Orange and Teal colour grade, hinted in your sunset images, but it is incredibly hard to achieve without looking like a dog's dinner. I do enjoy the occasional Black and White image. Rather than being lazy and just removing "Saturation", I like to play with the colour channels to see if I can bring out subtle details or tones to help enhance the image in its Black and White form. I have no doubt that you do this as well. 😀
Good point Frank... altering the colour channels really has an impact on how your images look. I also like to use red filters as well when shooting to really make the images look different. As always thanks for watching 😁👍
Erudite vid, Mike. Color shift bits effective, along w/editing screens. Don’t hear much about shades, tints and tones from other channels. “So what” factor at last third. TBH, my hunch is that earlier stuff is too technical and voluminous for most of your viewers, - needs careful replay for ideas to sink in. Took me a while to just absorb CMY when I made my own color prints from slides. (Tended to get it mixed up w/“CYA”.😊) “Harmonies” something new. Good tip for temp/tint slider. When the “big idea” behind a “theory” has been proven, it’s no longer a “theory”, right? Should be called color “science” or “laws” - we don’t have a “theory” of gravity; we have a law. Table duly noted - it’s grey, right? HT 1:02, Mike 1:01. Cheers!
Beautifully illustrated video, Mike. You made a difference between additive and subtractive colour which is a real concern if you print. If you have zero experience with printing in different colour languages you can get bad prints. Stay safe out there.
Thanks Mike for another spot on lesson. You really know how to break boundaries of the box - nowadays photographers and those wanna be ones mostly focus on getting familiar with varieties of techniques and creative ideas, so this voyage to the forgotten world of the fundamental knowledge feels like a breeze in a hot sunny day. What video editor you use? I am on a brink to buy DaVinchi Resolve 18 - do you have any experience with that? Cheers Mike, thanks a lot for your efforts and I hope This time, next year you - maybe won't become a millionaire, but you might easily double the number of your subscribers.
Thanks so much for your kind words! Colour theory is one of those fundamentals that really helps... especially when you are out in the field and you start thinking of the colours you want, but also don't want in your frame. I use Premier Pro, but I have dabbled with Davinci 18. It is a great program and if you are learning video editing, it is worth learning one program and learning it really well. I heard someone say that when you switch programs after knowing one really well, it is like learning how to do about a thousand tasks ever so slightly differently. I think it might have been potato jet... 🤔 If you like it and get on with the free version well, then I'd say it is well worth the investment. Thanks for watching 😁👍
Really interesting thank you. But how on Earth do you get your audio so consistent? It never changes from shot to shot - like you’ve re-recorded it in the studio with perfect lip-sync!!!! 😀
Haha! Thanks so much!! I have been making videos for about 20 years now so I have learned a few tricks to get it as clean as possible. I use a wireless lav mic and keep the levels the same, so as long as I am in range, it keeps the audio fairly similar from shot to shot. Then there is the wind... which is the bane of my life! 😆 I do have the fluffy wind cover on my mic all the time, but I do have to be conscious of it. I try to keep the wind on my back and this seems to work, but thinking of that as well as trying to stay in frame and remember what I am talking about is a little tricky at times, especially when it is gusting all over the place. Then I do a bit of audio editing to get it sounding better than just out of the mic. Great to hear you are liking it though. Thanks for watching 😁👍
Hi Mike, great video, well explained and a good production. I'm going to share this in class with my college photography students. I'll also link it to one of my own videos on my own fledgling RUclips channel. Where can I find episodes 1 - 3? Keep up the good work, subscribed! 😎😎😎
Great explanation of color theory, Mike. It is ironic that a Welshman is adding vowels to words (colour), seeing as the entire Welsh language seems to string as many consonants as humanly possible together to make words, but that is another matter. I started following Blake Rudis many years ago on RUclips. He is a former painter that got into Photography and has mastered Photoshop. He has some really great videos on color theory, as well as many other things that are worth checking out. Hope you and yours are well, brother.
Haha!! True dat!!! Don't know if you watch Archer... but the episode when he was in Wales with Lana made me chuckle!! 😆 Thanks for the recommendation, I'll have to check out Blakes channel! We are all good... on the move again and just in Europe on holiday... or as you guys say "on vacation" 😆 Hope you and the family are all good! 😁👍
Hi mate, love your videos but they haven't been turning up in my notifications for the last couple of months. I thought youd taken a break tbh, not sure if you maybe want to address this in one of ur future videos, not sure if other people have had the same issue. Love your content and I just want to make sure they are reaching your viewership :)
Thanks so much for letting me know. Since youtube moved away from the subscriber model and moved to the clicks and likes it has been getting harder and harder to reach people who would really benefit from my videos... Even when you click on the bell and select all, it doesn't always work... I have been really frustrated with the model recently. I had one video that really popped, and over 350,000 people watched it... then when I doubled down and made more videos like it, the following ones weren't show to a fraction of these people. It is almost like each video stands on its own and the subscriber count is just a badge for bragging rights... Anyway, enough of my rant... once again thanks for letting me know and let's hope they get it sorted, otherwise I'll have to start making cat videos!! 😆 As always thanks for watching 😁👍
Do you use Photo RAW, i think thats a kind of Photoshop? Or do you use Lightroom. I find it hatd to decide which to use, Ps or Lr or LrC. I just started and until know only used the Photo RAW from Photoshop. But i heard LrC could be better. It depends on what i Photograph i think, with my photography (Birds and other Animals) i think editing is not as important as Colourgrading denoise etc. What could you recommend me to try out?
I just use lightroom as it is quite an intuitive program to use. Photoshop is great but it is a big and complex program that can do everything and anything... as long as you know how to... but it is quite intimidating. Thanks for watching 😁👍
I'd go for srgb. Most websites use srgb and so if you want your images to look good on line, this will give you a good representation of what they will look like. Thanks for watching 👍

The best tutorial on this subject, great stuff & easy to understand......now to practice😊 Many thanks.
I have all but sold my SOUL to get a grip on this. Thank you so much for a colourfully simplistic explanation!!
😀
Lol. Well I hope it makes sense now... And hopefully you can rebuild your soul now it does. 😁

Another masterclass in video production. Once again an in depth and thought provoking presentation.
Thanks so much, I have a lot of fun writing, filming and editing these videos so it is great to hear that it comes through!

I appreciate contents like this. Thanks, Mike!
... and I appreciate comments like this... 😁 Thanks Clyde!
Thank you! Excellent color discussion I'll rewatch many times
Good stuff. Although I know most of color theory, the temperature, tint adjustment advice is new to me. Thx!

Mike, all I can say is your video on colo(u)r theory: Absolutely Brilliant!
Thanks so much Jim! 😁👍
Very helpful series!
Thanks very much!! 😁👍
When i started working for Canon I did their colour theory course. Was a whole week in the training centre in Reigate. Enjoyed it! Thanks for the vid
In addition to your excellent instruction,.. you produce brilliant and very professional videos'... Thanks ''
Thanks very much Oscar!! 😁👍
What a great way to talk about color theory Mike! As usual, really informative series you are making. 😁
Thanks so much dude!! This was a fun on to do and I re-learned a lot when putting it all together.
As always thanks for watching my friend 😁👍
Really well explained - thank you, Mike
No worries, thanks for watching 😁👍
Another good video Mike
Thanks so much Lyn! 😁👍
A great series Mike! Really informative. Though I do have a love/hate relation with colour theory.
Haha! I know what you mean Alun... it is one of those things that can give delight and also cause so much frustration.
Thanks for watching 😁👍
