- This is a 1982 Yamaha XJ650 Maxim I scooped up for $250. It was not running and had been garaged for 5 years. I plan on doing a series on restoring this unit in several parts
For those wondering why the fuel was pouring out of the carbs after he turned the knob to "Primary" it is actually not Primary it is Prime! When you turn it to Prime it releases the vacuum and allows the tank to gravity-feed the bike allowing you to prime the carbs for the first run after sitting for a long time or after winterizing the motorcycle. The XJ650s are vacuum-controlled fuel pressure so the engine creates a vacuum pulling fuel from the tank into the carbs. On is your normal use and should be on that for everyday riding and reserve is self-explanatory. I know this video is 3 years old but the video is still relevant for those who are just coming across the video.

Same here! I got mine a week ago, first bike as well! This has been a great resource for getting familiar with her as I'm running into some issues getting it to start - and when it does, it's only firing on two cylinders. Just finished part 1 of the series, and looking forward to the rest.

Same! The carbs are nasty though. It’s awful to pull them out and make sure they are clean. I’ve pulled them off 2 times and have to again to put them in an ultrasonic cleaner.

i had an 82' XJ650 Maxim as well and that thing ALWAYS needed multiple shots of starter fluid into the air intake to start up. Never cleaned the carbs though. Hey, it kept me paranoid as hell from stalling out, therefore making me a better rider! Great video.

Clean the gas tank #1. Take off the carbs and clean throughly #2. Make sure the boots aren’t cracked in which will cause an air leak#3. I just bought a1982 650 xj maxim there real well make bikes !!
I found cylinder 1 had a crack in the boot. I could manipulate it to make the chirping stop and start. Thank you for he help!!!

One of my favorite spark plugs, ND Nippon Denso. I have a 3905 miles 1982 750 Maxim, hasn't been run in years, working on it. I paid $200 for it but didn't have the carbs. Thanks for the video.

Cool wee video. Just finished a lockdown xj650 maxim bobber project. Bought it as a USA import last March. Now; Fully service, new battery, new head bearings, new head lamp, new brake pads, slight rewrite, repaint, single leather seat, custom side panels. Runs sweet once off the choke. Just waiting on the UK plate to arrive, then it’s fully road legal.
A great little vintage everyday bike. Might even buy another next winter to play with.

It really sucks seeing what was once such a beautiful bike in that condition. I bought a brand new Yamaha Maxim 650 in 1982. It was my first new bike. It was a replacement for my first street bike, a 1980 Yamaha XS400 Special I bought slightly used. Before that I had been riding dual sport on/off road bikes. Yamaha made such beautiful, high quality bikes back then.

I had one of those in 1994, payed $500 for it with about 17k on it. I took it from Northeast PA to California and back. Not very comfortable for long rides but in ran flawlessly even when I had to put 81 octane in it in the middle of Nevada desert. I sold it in 96 with 50k on it and it still ran pretty well. $250 was a steal on your bike.

I have a 1985 Maxim X XJ700 that has been sitting 22-years. I've repaired numerous corroded electrical connections, battery, oil/filter change, cleaned gas tank, replaced fuel and vacuum lines, replaced petcock, and still it took a few tries to get it to fire at all, then when it did the engine ran rough and would just die again after a few seconds. I used to drive the bike long ago, and it was a lot of fun with those 20-valves breathing, but looks like she sat too long. Will tackle the carbs next. Fingers crossed.
You did a lot of work! I think the carbs are a must. But it's good to hear you have compression and spark. That's 75% of the battle!

I use Marvel Mystery oil . I let it set overnight in the tank and carbs. It's never failed on old bikes for me. I also mix alcohol gas and oil for the first 20 miles. Drain and ride.

I just scooped up one for 300! I’m so excited! It supposedly runs and drives, has a bad battery and slight fuel line leak, but it will be a good first bike and project bike. I can’t wait to get it to my house soon.

Kevin On 4 Wheels update: petcock is in terrible condition, I’ve had to pull the carbs 2 times and will again because I just got an ultrasonic cleaner (throttle is sticking) some specific seals are really tough to find and are expensive, but it’s not a bad bike to work on! I fixed the valves and took it out for a 20 mile spin. It’s an amazing bike!

It was awesome to see you getting it running again, I have just recently purchased a 1982 XJ750D YAMAHA's First Fuel Injected Motorcycle with Rider Comms and full Digital Display. It needs a fair bit of work. It is running and is about to get a W.O.F (Warrant Of Fitness) /M.O.T.
Can't wait to rip into it and start restoring it.

I'm sure it's repaired by now but at 21:14 you can see puffs of smoke shootout, indicating a blown head gasket on #1 cyl. Is it running good now?
Hello. It ran decently 2 years ago. I have had it in storage and need to get back into it to get all the nip and tuck done. But I am definitely going to zero in on cylinders 1. Thank you for bringing it to my attention!
Should have put the fluid in the Cylinder before cranking it, if you thought you needed it, then turned over by hand a few times.
I regret not doing that! Hindsight is 20/20

Ironically, four years later, I buy a shoddy painted red one with EXACTLY the same issues.
These bikes are bombproof, except for the carbs, they need some care but once stripped and cleaned properly and set up right you will have the most reliable bike you could wish for. Your pilot circuits are clogged by the way

This problem I got with a 1983 Yamaha 750 seca. What was sitting for more than 2 years, the first thing I got stock in was the carburetor been completely block out. So I started to work in service carburetor completely. all jet nozzles where completely clogged n rusted, even treadles in the carburetor didn’t even move.
I picked up a 750 last year for $500 with title. Pretty much same condition but still needs some issues addressed. When it comes to carbs not running right, honestly thes best thing to do is just to clean the carbs out. That throttle body cleaner stuff or any other home remedy won't really solve the main problem by just spraying into the intake..
5 years ain't nothing, the xj I got last year hadn't been ridden, registered or started since 1993, they are easy to get started, making run right that's a whole nother story, so you are planning a series on restoring the xj, good luck with that because there ain't none of the important new parts available, well unless you live in aussie land, i was just talking to someone down under and they were able to get all their timing gear, guides chains ect right from the local dealers shelf, there ain't none of that stuff her in the US except the NOD stuff you can find on ebay but the idiots selling the stuff think they have the rarest most valuable parts on earth. IF YOU NEED A REPAIR MANUAL LET ME KNOW I'LL SEND YOU A DIGITAL COPY....

Hello my father just bought this bike could you please send me the manual? Jessicaschooladdress1@aol.com I’d truly appreciate it! The bike is shorting straight to ground and the battery’s brand new yet not able to get the bike charged even when the battery is fully charged the bike is sucking so much amperage to start and just draining the entire battery immediately. We’re praying it’s not an alternator problem because we did have it running when we jump started it. But when we got the new battery now it won’t even start. But anyways the manual would be of great help!

Damn, you're doing everything you should NOT do. It's a miracle you have'nt blown up your garage yet. I've been fixing motorcycles for over 10 years, and did about 100, including a couple of maxim's. The way you are doing this is very wrong and dangerous. Oil spraying, gas leaking, it's a disaster. Don't try this at home people! If you get a bike that has been sitting for 5 years, make sure not to start it. Clean the carbs first, change the oil and the spark plugs, make sure there are no leaks, and after all that.....then you start it. And try to keep your workspace clean, cause this is just horrible.

I have an opportunity to buy a 1982 Yamaha 650 Maxim excellent condition only 2400 original miles one owner, the old man passed away, his wife selling it for $2000 . But it's been sitting for about three years . Looks damn near new . What would be a fair price to pay ?
That’s a nice find. Well, consider the title process to make sure you can transfer it ok. I think 2,000 is high even for this crazy market. You’ll prob need tires outta the gate if they’re old and dry rotted. I think $1,500 might be “fair”. $1,200 would be better

13:45 Yeah, I'm gonna ask you a question. Where could I get? A vow head overhead valve boat for the passenger side topping on the cap. I'm missing one. Where could I go get one at and what would the car brighter sit if I rebuilt him? Cause he would have straight dirt and rushed. In and I took the jets out and cleaned them and put them back in. Could you tell me what the terms are on the car? Drivers was not didn't have a gasket or it was rotted or something, and I replaced it, and number one piston that would be on the left side was all dark and kind it looked like. I don't know, like a goldfish look like it was getting old cause.I guess it's licking old or it wouldn't get the right mixture of air but the bike was running on three

Got to say I like the deals that you get that's for sure especially the snowmobile, although you got a smoking deal on that Yamaha Maxim that's for sure. I have a 1982 Suzuki 650 for basically the same bike. Mine's even a shaft drive to. The biggest problem with those bikes are the carburetors that's for sure, I have a list on how many times the previous owners have rebuilt the carburetors on my bike and they need to be done again. I can tell you for sure you ever turn the motor over whether it's seized or not get them plugs out and spray something in them. Because by the time you turned it over without any top-end lubrication in it the damage is done. It may not be much damage but it's still best to do that first. I hope to see more videos on that snowmobile and I can't believe that you didn't get it running I thought for sure is a good of condition is that thing as in you would have had it popped off right away. Anyhow my friend many blessings in our new year.

I still own a 1982 Maxim XJ650J that I bought new in march 1982; it has only 6387 kilometers (canadian equivalent to 3966 miles) Runs about one or two hours per year. Any collector interested ?

Basically got the same bike mines the 85 xj750, I started it up one day, was running alright, then it started to make a gurgling sound, kinda bogging out, then had oil looking from somewhere, Bo cracks in the block or anything, any ideas? It's sat for 2 years cuz I'm stumped on it but I want to get her back and running
I used to have the 700 maxim x for a little cruiser it left many open mouthed how quick of the mark they are sold it to a friend who then totally destroyed it in a smash

Just yesterday I picked up a xj1100 for a reasonable price. It didn’t run for few years now. No keys. I am really debating should I sell and try to make sum money or should I try to fix it 🤔.... it looks very clean. First bike so Im afraid I may bite more than I can chew. So here I am searching the net to find the answer...
That’s a tough call. It’s always a gamble. I feel if you have a decent bike that you will enjoy learning to wrench on stay the course! But if aren’t interested in the hard knocks, you can make a profit then buy something running!

Just bought one, sadly it has some “custom” to say the least wiring. It cranks over well, just no spark
Thankfully the wiring harness isn't too terribly complicated. I had a wreck of a fuse box which I replaced and things have been very good since then.

I just bought one for $300. Put a new battery in and I did not get lights. Brand new to all of this. What’s the next step? I’m assuming it’s an electrical problem.
Did the starter work? If so, I would start with fuses then trace everything back to the battery

that cm3 number is oil capacity marked by the clutch on the engine case engine size is between the pipes on the front of the engine
You scored an easy bike to keep running once you work thru all the neglected fuel and wiring woes you have here. Scare a manual up and run thru the numbers, starting with the electrical segment. It totally lost signal in the video. That's going to leave you stranded some day. Best of luck on your bike.

if you dont plug the vacuum line to the petcock it creates a pretty sweet vacuum leak lol im surprised cyl 3 even ran.

How you fix? I've heard shrink wrap around the boot works
@@norwichcomputerrepair939 liquid electrical tape if they're not so bad that you need to replace them. Feel them inside and out and you'll know what to do by how bad it is
I have a question hoping you might be able to answer for me. There is a hose coming from the intake compartment that leads to the air filter. If you go to 18:05 and pause I can show you what I mean. Now you see the gas line hose and to the right of it underneath that black plastic intake cover (sorry lack of better word) is another hose coming underneath, you can see the clip and the hose heading downward. Now on my bike this hose has become disengaged and I can't figure out where it connects to, I have looked all over. Could you please tell me where this goes? I would think it cycles back into the engine as it did have some oil coming from it. thanks
HandNrocK hello! I’ll take a better look today. First though is it’s a crankcase breather hose for emissions purposes but Ill look around in the area!
HandNrocK ok I think. I got it figured out. I believe that is a drain hose for the air box. In the event it gets flooded it will drain out so the intake won’t suck it in. It should be hanging unattached to anything. I think that’s those you were looking at? Let me know!!

@@kevinon4wheels Also when all the power cut out on you and magically turned back on i took out the main fuse and sanded the metal bits on the ends and havent had a problem since

Hey so im looking at buying one can you give mw any tips on what to look for
I noticed after the fact the intake manifold was dried and cracked. That caused the whistling in one of my videos. I bought new ones for hardly anything but I snapped off the stud on the first bolt. So needless to say a little RTV fixed it for now. Touch all 4 exhaust pipes when it starts up so you can make sure all 4 cylinders are firing. Other than that it's pretty straight forward!

If you think you have problems now just wait until you have to take the carbs off. My XJ750 is a bitc* to get off and worse to get back on...
You're not kidding. I tried forever to get everything lined up and pop in. Wasn't happening.... I found it easier to buy 4 cone filters and rejet the carbs instead. Ha ha. It was worth it
Use ratcheting straps
Pods are a nightmare with these carbs, runs much better with the air box. There are several tricks for fitting these carbs, head over to xjbikes forum, you'll find all you need to know

No, not homemade. They were fitted as standard on Maxim and Seca XJs. If you don't like it please send it to me, I've been trying to get one for my Seca for years
Correct, it is Factory, and it takes the same Factory ignition key to the bike. Same as gas tank, and helmet/seat locks.! All off same factory Yamaha key.!! 😁 It's a tire/frame lock so it cannot be rolled away, or stolen easily. It's just locked on a pin welded to the frame to keep it inplace, and has a identical pin on the other end of the protected chain to lock it to itself once wrapped around what you secure it to. It's genius really, and how it neatly packs up in that little plastic cubby hole, and then locks back to the pin on the frame so it can't fall out and you can't lose it It's awesome I used to use it all the time.! 😁 Rough areas at night.! I bet all it needed was a bit of penetrating oil in the lock and key hole to get it to pop open with the key. Too bad you cut it off.! 😞
I have had my 82 XJ 650 for 20 years and still Love it.!
The factory helmet lock is on the right side, with the seat release. Turn the key to the Right, to pop the swing down U shaped lock to put thru the helmet strap, or metal rings on chin strap, to lock it to the side of the bike by pushing it back up to lock it.
And turn the key to the Left, to be able to pull the lever to pop the seat off.
