So, I have paused this at 2:25 to make a comment about the bass response of the JBL EON ONE vs the Bose S1 Pro, before listening: Bose became a major audio powerhouse when they developed their long-wave-guide technology for small woofers. This technology essentially allows a relatively small driver to excite the resonant frequencies of a large mass of air contained within the volume of the wave-guide chamber, causing a much greater bass response than a conventionally mounted and ported woofer of the same size. In other words, the acoustic characteristics of the enclosed volume act as an amplifier, the way a resonant concert hall acts as an amplifier of sound played in the hall. Okay, I'll listen now ...
I am a Bose loyalist and I use Bose in my home studio and personal audio and based on that I was almost about to buy the S1 Pro when I just came across this video and went in to compare the EON ONE COMPACT and found it superior to S1, 4 ch compared to 3 ch of S1, Ducking, Base boost on Bluetooth, superior all range coverage and App control is fabulous at a lesser cost point.
Definitely the JBL especially with the Helix. Thanks, enjoyed this & has pushed me in the direction of the JBL. I’ve listened to many including in person & JBL for what my needs are.
I own both and the JBLproduces more natural tone from my acoustic(D28/ Lyric mic,JHS Colour BOX) however, the tone from Bose unit is both pleasing and exciting, albeit distorted.
Please give me you advice!........I have a hk Lucas 608 for small restaurant gigs but, I since COVID - no gigs! - I need to have something to play on the street that has a built in battery. Which of the two would you recommend for a Saxophonist that uses backing tracks and occasional singing?.......any suggestions appreciated!
Jazz marcel the JBL is more versatile than Bose, but I think the Roland stereo mini pa is the best. Bose is small and sounds great. I use it with electric guitar and amp modeler or Sans Amp .Mackie free play is under powered.
Over other PA systems I own, the Bose S1 has the advantage of portability. I own one and have the Bose Backpack. The battery power and reverb, tone match and Bluetooth are good too. Disadvantages: I would like one more input for an additional mic when playing guitar with 2 singers. Also being able to control output to house and separately to the S1 speakers while using it as a monitor would be helpful if hooking into a house system. I find that I can use it in several situations including doing music at a service on top of a mountain with no power. I have no experience with the JBL system.
Thank you for these videos, I'm considering buying a JBL and your videos have been very helpful! To my ears, the S1 sounded a little more 'hi-fi', a little crisper than the JBL, which sounded a little bit more 'organic'. Sorry to use such soft terminology, they're just the best way I can think to explain it. I think I'd lean toward the JBL myself given the additional inputs, effects, and features. Can't wait to get your feedback after using the JBL for a live gig!
Siobhan bryan Hi I’m sorry but I haven’t played any gigs since the lockdown. I still feel the same as before though and others have given me good reports also!
First off thanks for this. I'm looking at the Bose, JBL and Mackie right now to purchase. From this video, using a pair of high end headphones, from ears that have set up everything from tiny pub room setups to 50,000 watt monster walls...the Bose actually sounded muddy. The JBL had fantastic clarity in comparison. On a gig I can see this having huge impact. It makes sense because Bose relies on wave guide tricks and DSP heavily and tends to tailor their sound to the average person who thinks the smile curve on the EQ sounds best. Going to watch your conclusion to see your final thoughts...this should be interesting!
Hey Aaron thanks again for the great videos. I was wondering how the Eon Compact went in a gig situation for you. There's a fair few comments on the Internet about it clipping at volumes that are not high, I'm interested to know what your experience was. People have various opinions about its sound compared to the Bose, but it's got some definite advantages eg extra input, app control, 8 inch woofer and more. Its specs say it's louder than the S1 Pro, but is that what you found IRL?
Keen to know how your gig went with the EON.... I've already purchased 2 EONS as I'm a techno and tech house DJ. We decided on it due to the 8 inch vs 6 inch. Re the duxkig feature, I also sing live vocals over the top of some tech house / house tracks. I only just bought them and haven't plugged in the mic yet... from bfers crossed I can turn the ducking feature off. I'll go look this morning.
Hello Aeron, first of all, I would like to congratulate you on your videos, they are very useful..... I was watching this video particularly, because that was the doubt I had, Bose or JBL.... honestly, I think I prefer the JBL, but my doubt is about the volume. I saw in other videos that you tested the AER Compact 60, I have one exactly the same, and I know that the volume is very loud, I can't test the JBL/BOSE in person, as I live in a small town in England, in the middle of nowhere ...... but, what is your opinion? Do you think that either the Bose or JBL has more volume than the AER? Not that I need to have more than the AER, as I play in small pubs, but if the volume is lower than the AER, it gets complicated..... thank you very much..... cheers
I intend to get one of these two. I’m primarily a vocalist who sings to backing tracks and I just strum along with guitar ( very basic guitar technique) I will busk and play small cafe bars and retirement homes. In order of importance for me in the machine is 1) Vocals ( and I am a baritone but sing wide variety) 2) MP3 backing tracks 3) Guitar ( electro acoustic). Which machine would you say has edge if money was irrelevant.
I do recording - I purchased the Tascam x8 - 32 bit recording - plus I get the Phantom Power - and unlimited CLEAN Pre Amps - also I can create a stero delay - with a 10 line in with my Bose Resolve Plus Speakers The Bose is clean like a QSC speaker - perfect for recording
Grate video man! I think that everyone of us who likes both the Bose and the JBL brands can thank you for taking your time on this review. Though I am addicted to Bose and nothing can change that, in my years they both sound great for the purpose that they can maximum handle! Way to go for the battery power option when is needed! Well, here comes the differences between what people like and choose and where is your purpose level set. Though both amps are sweethearts, I will not take any one of them to the gig! (we are talking small coffee shops gigs). Simply because for this purpose, in my opinion, there are much better options than these two! My belief is that a professional performer will not look into the small price differences when it comes to choosing THE BEST! And when you want to sound like never before and get the very best result in a small environment, you can go for the best compact system out there! That is the Bose L1 compact system with the ToneMatch mixer or another small professional mixer! It is not just me who says that, but also the audience! They will admit that they were blown away by the sound quality. Good luck with your JBL at the following gig! Can't wait to hear about that experience!
Thanks for sharing, and for The Helix test 😉👍👍 In The acoustic test no much diference in my studio monitors and my studio headphones.... in the other hand... with The Helix the JBL , for me is a clear winner.
I purchased a JBL Eon One when it first came out. Got it mail order without auditioning it! Anyhow, the Mic PreAmps were kind of pathetic. Months later, JBL admitted that they needed work. So I drove almost a hundred miles to a JBL repair center, and they worked on it, replaced some transistors or whatever. That improved the volume from the Mic inputs by about 30%. But the best sound was when I used a mixer and connected that by 1/4 inch cables into the back of the Eon One. The Eon One Pro replaced the Eon One, advertising new Mic Pre-amps but I still have my Eon One so I would not know or don't care to know how much better! At that time I had auditioned the Bose L1 that pricewise competed with the Eon One, and I surely prefer the Eon One. But even the Bose series has new products out. Lastly, I also own a Bose S1 Pro. Am very happy with it. Again, volume output using a mic plugged right into one of the mic inputs, is much lower than if I use a mixer. Seems like there must be some company across the seas that makes pre-amps for many of these speakers! :)
I m also JBL Eon One former user, mine works fine, though. I am really considering "upgrading" to one of these two. The main reason for me is that I am playing smaller gigs, and I usually cannot turn master higher than to 1/2, thus I feel like I would appreciate something smaller and possibly more compact instead. Could you take a moment to compare Bose S1 to your JBL Eon One, pls?
@@pluckybreeze last year, I think about 9 months ago, I had to send my Bose S1 Pro to Bose for work on the hardware as it would not upgrade the hardware to the latest version. They were very efficient, did the work at a very reasonable cost and sent it back within ten days or so. It is an excellent speaker but I'd suggest you AUDITION anything you buy. Particularly the VOLUME of the speaker based on your needs, without a mixer. In the $1200 price range are the Eon One Mk2 and the Bose L1 Pro8. I don't think the Bose S1 Pro compares favorably to those but again, it may just be what you are looking for; check it out!!!
@@pluckybreeze I played with my S1 Pro just now, after several months. I used to feel that the microphone volume is too low but today I found that if I turned up the treble and bass way up in the microphone input, that helped the volume quite a bit. And the reverb for the microphone is pretty darn good. I could buy a microphone volume booster like a Cloudlifter but I believe those need 48 V phantom power which the S1 Pro does not provide. Now that is a big negative I think. That aside, the sound quality is excellent.
I think the Bose sounds a little bit better in your test. A bit clearer and more refined (but only a tad, both sound great). The Bose seems like an awesome experience straight out of the box, plus it is so portable. However the JBL is quite a bit bigger so if you need a bit more power I suspect the JBL might be best. Both great speakers. I bought the Bose S1 Pro because Amazon had a great deal for a model with the battery for AUD$340 cheaper than I could find the JBL.
I'm in a similar boat, and looking at the duel kit of 2x Base S1 Pro for $1637 inc stands. Though I am tempted by the 2x S1 Pros + SBU1 Subwoofer kit for $2587..... I"m going to talk to some people in store, and do some samples. I'll mostly use the single or double speakers setup bluetooth, and on a table/floor, but the options are great as I want good sound for music at dance parties, and also to enjoy listening to quality audio.
@@JasonTankard Well you'll definitely want the subwoofers for dance music - but they're an expensive addition. My main interest is acoustic guitar and vocals. The Bose S1 is particularly popular with acoustic guitar players and it is great for that purpose. I can't tell you if it is the best option for dance music though (I haven't researched that thoroughly enough). The sound is good though, even just playing music files. The S1 truly is quite compact which I would think limits its abiltiy to provide a really strong bass. So if you are planning on buying a system without additional subs then I'd look at some other options too.
@@ubellubo cheers. I'm thinking to get 2 and the sub. But it'll also get used as a single or battery pair, because the sub mains power only. I know people with a single unit, and one dance school running a pair, and they highly recommend them. I looked at the JBL Eon One compact as an alternative, but it's not as clean, yes more bass, but lacks some versatility, asthetics and a really clean tone.
@@JasonTankard I think two S1 Pros with Subs would be awesome. At some point I'd like to add either a second S1 or a Sub to my set up in the future too (or both).
I do recording - I purchased the Tascam x8 - 32 bit recording - plus I get the Phantom Power - and unlimited CLEAN Pre Amps - also I can create a stero delay - with a 10 foot line in with my Bose Resolve Plus Speakers
Thanks Aaron, very well done! Ears are different.. after listening a few times I still prefer the JBL sound, seems richer and fuller, especially with the Helix. However I would like to listen some more examples.. looking very much forward to your coming video! maybe also a loudness test... loudness comparison JBL vs Bose S1 vs others?
I almost convinced myself S1 pro will be my first PA system. Until I found out about Jbl eon one. The thing that mostly changed my mind on Jbl over Bose, is the phantom power for mic's. With JBL I can use condenser mics also, and watching this comparison the sound difference is minimal, maybe I even like Jbl better, and that's the winner for me with all my affinity for Bose products.
The JBL has a new app that is not good. My current recommendations are the Bose S1 Pro+ for the smallest size and cool features or the EV Everse 8 for something larger and louder with phantom power.
JBL EON ONE sounds more LOW-MID and in the same time BOSE S1 PRO sounds more MID-HI. I would use JBL EON ONE for listening music or for club, and BOSE S1 PRO for live playing of acoustic guitar.
They sound very similar indeed, both punching above their weight class. With the Bluetooth mixer functionality, the JBL has a lead for now until the headroom and distortion field tests come in. You supposedly can pair up 2 JBL units with Bluetooth as well instead of running a cable between them. Very nice comparison video, thanks for doing the community a service!
A bit of a noticeable proximity effect when using microphone in unprocessed mode on both units. Not a deal breaker but an observation. Great presentation. Thanks.
Hi Aaron! First of all, congratulations to your amazing reviews! I really appreciated all of them because it’s so helpful! And would you mind answering between both, which one has more power without clipping with the best audio quality? I intend to use it playing with Slg200nw and vocals in restaurants and hotel’s rooms. Thanks for all!
I have seen many comparisons and in some of them the Bose sounds better and in others the JBL. I think it really depends on your wants and needs. I think the JBL bass was deeper but the Bose had a clearer sounds quality. My honest opinion is you should go down the store and compare them yourself that is the only way you can be sure.
Aaron, Thank you for doing this side by side test! ..I'm considering the JBL. I play multiple acoustic shows per week. Looking forward to your "live" results! Thank you again..
Thanks for doing this. Currently in the market for either or. The Bose S1 seems to have more clarity to me. Thinking the JBL will have more headroom though. Also, it seems the JBL has packed a few more features as well. Being able to change out the battery is a nice option, but was told an extra battery is almost half the cost of the JBL. Will be looking forward to your next video.
I'm really struggling to make a decision. Interested in battery support, hence the decision being between these two. I'm setting up as wedding/church ceremony singer. I'm female with high voice and lever harp, will also play flute and some guitar. Basically, I'm a light singer so not looking for big bass (except to pick up resonance of the bass notes on my harp) and really would strive for clarity in the higher registers. Sorry, I'm not very technical. Any thoughts/advice?
Since you will need the bass I would go for the JBL. It has have longer battery life and the app makes it more versatile. It’s also on sale in the USA right now.
@@aaronshortmusic I'm in Britain but it's on sale here too. Thank you for that. I was edging towards the jbl anyway. In fact, I have it in a checkout basket right now. Really appreciate your reply. Thank you 😃
@@annmaria If you have any comments after purchasing the JBL I'd be interested. We (my wife and I) have a really similar setup, she plays lever harp, I play flute, Irish bouzouki and bodhran so we kinda need a full range (the Killarney harp has a really lush lower end as well) and that is where the JBL wins on paper at least.
Nice video. Thanks. Can I power a wireless mic with one of the USB Ports? A typical 9v power that would usually plug into a wall receptacle. I have an adapter that plugs into USB port for power then into the barrel pin connector of the mic receiver. Is it enough power for the mic?
Hi again Aaron! I think you said somewhere in a video that you previously had the Mackie Freeplay and that it was not close in loudness. Just an idea how would the Mackie Freeplay compare in loudness and sound quality with the JBL and the Bose? The Mackie rated max SPL is 114 (115 the new Live), the Bose 109, the JBL 112. Are these values any close to what you heard? Thank you, looking forward to your review! :-)
Maybe there is such a thing as ‘perceived’ loudness. I don’t know what those ratings are based on but with the previous Freeplay version I really struggled to use it at even a quiet gig. The S1 Pro was the first small speaker that could actually be used at a small-medium sized gig for me.
They are close, at first the Bose sounded smoother and the JBL was scratchier. But the processed sound the JBL sounded more even and had nice dynamics. I'd try to use the Bose unprocessed and pull the bass down if possible. Nice work showing the comparison. To the point and showed the commone uses of each. Well done.
@@aaronshortmusic Just relistened, The Bose does have a clearer vocal all the way around, you can hear the small reverb fade out after that "Yeeahhh" vocal on the record you played. The JBL is a tad muddier. The vocal is usually the center of any mix. However that Bose lack of EQ is annoying and NO phantom power. Thanks again for your work!
Hi Aaron, what's the mic you are using in front of the speaker? It gives me the impressions it's pointed closer to the 8" speaker and not capturing the driver so well. Looks like Bose gives more highes frequencies. For sure Bass from Bose is not natural and it surprised me. Thank you for the test. I have American Audio ELS GO 8 BT planing to buy the JBL.
Hi it’s a Slate ML-2. It’s a good mic because it’s very flat response. Remember that the JBL has an amazing EQ in the app so you can tune it how you like!
I preferred the sound of the JBL, both instrument and vocal but I wonder if some of that comes from what I oerceived as a volume difference; the JBL sounded louder. How did you set the volumes of the two units? I listened a second time with my eyes closed and think the richer sound of the JBL had produced an illusion of greater volume. What channel and setting (line or mic) was the music going into on the JBL?
I set them both to 1/4 volume and tried to match the audio in post but they are probably slightly different. I definitely feel the JBL has a fuller sound but it is an 8” speaker vs the 6” of the Bose...
Thanks for the thorough review. Have a question concerning the JBL which I couldn't seem to find the answer to by looking at the manual. Does the master volume level effect the output volume of the pass-through and/or headphone outputs?
Mike Sales Sings I’d appreciate if you can chime back in to let me/us know. I’m interested in (occasionally) using the JBL as a mixer/monitor and then lining out to the main system for larger setups. This is why I’m curios as to whether or not the master volume effects these outputs.
@@samvide I didn't check out the unit with headphones, but the levels from the pass-through were louder when the JBL was louder. Thing is though, I didn't really work too much with the gain staging, so I'm not entirely sure if the pass-through was reflecting the master volume, channel volume or channel gain, but since I pretty much ran everything between 8 & 10 it didn't matter to me, I was just trying squeeze as much headroom out of it before distortion...and it did very well!
Mike Sales Sings - Thanks for your reply. Still without a definitive answer to my question but I thank you just the same. What I’m trying to find out is, if using the JBL as a mixer/monitor and then lining out to a main system, would adjusting the “monitor” volume also adjust the volume of the main system? In such a scenario, from my perspective, ideally the channel volumes would effect the main speakers but the master volume would not. This flexibility would make it easier to adjust the “monitor” independently from the main system (as one would typically want to do when using a monitor).
@@samvide I'm using the JBL at the gig tomorrow, so if I have time, I'll daisy chain out of the pass through, adjust the master and see what happens. The channel & master controls are the same, you select what you're adjusting. There's also the app that comes into play, so it's a little confusing as to what controls what when, but I'm working on it, so I may have an answer by Saturday or maybe someone else will answer before that.
Great Comparison! which what i was looking for NO BS. I think i got hook with the JBL its Organic due to EQ and its great that you showed how you set your EQ will definitely go for JBL CHEERS Man 👊🏻
Great video! I have a question, if you use the Helix and playing with metal tone, it is sound great with JBL? And if I connect an electronic drum? Thanks, Bert
Aaron, in your opinion what you think is the best amp for an acoustic guitar in combination with singing! Especially the singing part would have my interest .
I have reviewed so many that it's really hard to say which is 'best'. It really Demonds on the size and features that you need. I will discuss this in more details in today's live stream.
Great comparison video. Would have liked to see/hear an A/B test between comparable settings on the Bose & JBL though. They both sound great. Would be nice to switch back and forth a few times between them though to really point out the differences. But my guess is anything that you hear on the Bose that you like you could probably dial it in the with powerful EQ selections on the JBL.
Hey Matt. You are absolutely right. The Bose sounds great with MOST instruments and is very easy to use but the JBL’s app allows it to sound great with ANY instrument as long as you set the EQ correctly.
Hey Aaron, so what is your current thoughts on the Eon One Compact. How does it perform in a live performance scenario? Better than the Bose? I am thinking of selling the Bose and grabbing the JBL. Thanks bro.
It performs great but sometimes I still enjoy the simplicity and small form factor of the Bose. I would probably wait for now to see if either company releases new firmware or a new product unless you really need the JBL for its features.
I have just got the bose just sing with backing tracks at home why I can't gig at the moment but I feel I have no control over the eq on the bt connection and also the reverb is not really to my taste. Is there more reverb options with the jbl?
Hello again! I have two s1 pros. I'm looking to add two eons as well. But I was wondering if you connect the s1 pro to an eon via a cable, would the eons Bluetooth phone mixer also translate over to the bose going through the eons( you would be mixing both speakers equally at the same time),or does the eons mixer only work on the eon? Thanks!
Hi. Very nice comparison. QQ can I also line in to a Mac for recording while the speaker playing the music in JBL? Plan to connect my Keyboard, E drum and possibly a guitar.
Hi Aaron. I’m looking at both of these amps and can’t decide. I have one of my Martins with a K&K Mini. Which did you prefer with that pickup? Also, would I need to use a preamp to tailor my sound? Thanks
@@cashmoney9256 I did. It sounds great. I also have the K&K Pure XLR Preamp which really helped to improve the sound. I'm very pleased with the pick up/preamp/JBL combination
Thanks for this video.. i think the Bose S1 pro would give a different sound when mounted to a speaker stand. There's a switch in the hole that changes the sound. And it also changes when you tilt it. Does JBL have the same feature? I can't remember what it's called. Accellerometer? (Not sure about the spelling).
Thanks a lot for suck great comparison video, strange for Bose s1 pro it sounds largely different on the 3.5mm input jack vs ch1/ch2 input. Don't know how the 3.5mm input sounds comparing to JBL EON one compact.
I feel so stupid...I was looking at videos of the SA -1 and came upon yours. I payed no attention to whom you said you were but as I listened to the video I heard the most incredible song and went on a wild goggle search and nothing until I saw where you credited the song on this video. I went straight to iTunes and bought the Ten Songs CD. I perform and was dying to maybe sing it next weekend at a 300 people Christmas dinner dance. Anyway, I found your channel, saw you with Tommy Emanuel (OMG). Then down where you had listed your uploads, here is this video where you begin by say “I am Aaron Short...”. SMH. Well, let me say I am an instant fan. Dance all Night is an incredible song. Thank you for creating it. Good luck always! LA
Hey, nice review! I need your advice, I want to play covers with play back, I have Hotone Ampero 2 as a main guitar processing unit and will create the whole guitar chain in it and then send it to portable PA like JBL or Bose. I'm going to play metal cover as well, for example Metallica or Periphery and wnat to know which of these two is better for that purpose? So Eon Compact or S1 Pro? Or may be nowadays exists smth better?
I’m using the EV Everse 8 now! Having said that I would probably get something bigger for playing metal. The QSC 8.2 or 10.2 would be a good choice unless you need battery power.
@@aaronshortmusic I need something portable and lightweight, I use to play in front of small company (20-50 people), so even Bose S1 pro is enough, my question is about sound quality :)
Nice reviews, thanks. I'm wondering about the reach, or throw of both units. The S1 is rated 100° H x 40° V. I have been amazed the coverage the S1 lays down. Any thoughts on the Compact?
In this video I thought the Bose sounded better on most of your examples. The JBL sounded just a little more "midrangey" than the Bose. However, when I tested them side by side at GC with my acoustic (k&K) and vocals, I thought the JBL sounded quite a bit better-i.e. fuller/more robust- and that was without using the app for EQ etc, just the on-board EQ and verb. Anyway, I bought the JBL, which has replaced the Fishman Loudbox mini charge ( which sounds maybe a little richer on my guitar, but the vocals aren't as good, plus it's heavier).
@@vincentdelmas2792 I don't know about keyboard, but voice and guitar sound better IMO on the JBL - The JBL just sounds more robust overall. So, I would guess it would be better for keys too, but YMMV, etc. Hope that helps.
That’s too hard to answer. They are both equally good for different reasons. It depends on how and where you are going to use them but they are both excellent.
Hi Aaron. Which of the two would you prefer if you were to use them almost exclusively at home in my bedroom ? Keep in mind that they will be connected to an Rme and will be used to create songs made at 70% with a bass guitar and the addition of few guitars and synths. I don't need an exaggerated volume nor a flat sound for mixing .. The important thing is that they can hold my Rickenbacker without distortions or burky and muddy sound. What do you think of posting a video where you create a song on the fly by looping a bass first then the guitar and vocals? Maybe squeezing their abilities as much as possible to understand who surrenders first Thanks
@@aaronshortmusic OK thanks. I think it can also be useful for other users as their destination is also for street artists. Have you ever heard the QSC CP8?
Thanks, Aaron for the videos. Subbed! I just ordered the Eon One Compact, fingers crossed. Seems like a lot more PA system for the money. But I do think w/o EQ, out of the box, the Sq Pro sounds BETTER and more natural. But with EQ, I believe the Eon One Compact will sound flatter, more accurate, and with deeper true bass, and without the consumer-friendly "smile" shaped EQ curve the S1 Pro comes with.
@Aaron Short Music, got my Eon One Compact. VERY lightweight! I'm used to both powered and passive PA speakers from 20 yrs ago, and these are lighter than both. Yay technology. Looks great, great size, feels solid, and the soft rubber feet feel like quality. Sounds GREAT and musical out of the box, but seems a bit quiet, and I have to boost the bass. Still have to learn how to use the mixer features better. Using it as a mixer/PA for my son's drum pads (Kat percussion KTMP1) so he can play along with music. But I'm not gonna lie, also excited to use it as a Bluetooth speaker for parties/poolside, etc.
Good comparison. I would suggest next time you edit the video so that the same tests on each speaker play right after the other. That makes it easier to compare side by side without having to skip around in the video.
Aaron Short Music awesome. Thank you for your extensive review/comparison. I am a DJ so any more tests you could do with how loud the S1 and EON can get using the AUX input would be very much appreciated! No big deal if not though, you’ve done great already 👍
Thank you. I am sure the 8” JBL would be a good option for you but it depends on the events that you work at because you have to remember that it is 120watts...
Just wondering IF you plug a headset in the JBL does it shut off the speaker ? Or is there a way to do that while using the headset? Also Howe does and Electric guitar sound with the JBL thanks in advance...
Yes the speaker will shut off when a headset is connected. You could use the ‘thru’ output for your IEM’s/Headphones. Electric guitar sounds fine if you plug into an amp modeler first and then use the JBL app EQ to shape the room sound.
@@josealfredfernandes My answer is always the same. Out of the box the Bose is nice, it’s more portable and has a cool bag accessory. The JBL is better for bass and has a lot more flexibility and tweakability via the app.
Hey Aaron, Thanks for the videos! They’re really good! I’m really looking forward to the next video. I’m excited to hear about them in live situations. :)
Haven’t had a chance to try it much lately. When I first got it I used it at a bar and it worked fine but it will never replace a full stereo PA of course...
@@aaronshortmusic yeah but I'm sure it's good for it's intended purpose. I gig full time and was thinking about getting something like this for doing garden parties BBQ etc until the pubs reopen. I don't want to lug around my full pa for such small crowds. Btw I dig your videos, great content. I'm interested, have you settled on pickup that you think is the holy grail? I use an anthem in one of my guitars and the element in another. Im not 100% happy with either. I was looking at the K&K trinity, have you any experience with that one? Cheers
Whitty I was just thinking the same thing! It’s a great time to show up with a guitar, wireless mic and guitar and JBL. It will help keep things clean and stealthy lol. I was also just thinking that I haven’t found the holy grail yet just many excellent options. I haven’t tried the Trinity but I suspect I would like it.
Hi!, thanks for your comparison test!, question, can we use JBL to play karaoke?, I listened that the music goes down when you speak with mic, does it has a mode that when you speak with mic the music wont down or always will down?, thanks again
They are about the same depending on how you have the EQ set and the instrument that you are using. The S1 Pro may be (or appear to be) slightly louder but only slightly.
Hi, Can we take the lineout of Bose S1 Pro, and connect to a audio interface for recording purposes. Typically to a behringer uca222. Can you help with details of cables.
Sure you can use a jack cable from the line out on the S1 Pro to the input on the interface. Here is an article about it: toonz.ca/bose/wiki/index.php?title=S1_Pro_System_Line_Out#Connection_to_Mixers
To me, the JBL certainly has a tighter bass and sounds a little bit better overall. I think the biggest win here is the ability to dial in your tone a bit better with the JBL EQ software.
@@aaronshortmusic Did you ever try it at volume? How was it? I’m still looking for a great battery portable pa for busking. Acoustic and 2 vocals maybe a cajon.
i just bought the Bose s1 pro, the money is worth , Bose copied the Carvin Stagemate 600 system 2016,which carry 1 / 5 inches woofer ,and on top 4 tweeters in a bridge all of them neodymium speakers, The Bose s1 pro carry 1 woofer and on top a bridge with 3 tweeters ,all of them neodymium speakers which give a clear sound for the guitar (i use chorus pedal) The microphone , only use the bass volume in "0" and highs in "7 ". and the guitar set up is 2' for the bass and 6' for the high frequency, the bass is so powerful, the only only problem is effects ,the Bose only carry "reverb" and is very flat , so i use extra pedal"delay" for my guitar and sound good, i use Sennheiser e943 for microphone and both are only i volumen 6 for for 200 feet, good enough volume. the Bose recharge in 5 hours.
I am waiting to hear reports from others and I am going to take both amps to a rehearsal room next week to make a loudness test. I want to get this information before making a final review.
I really appreciate you doing this. I play at the beach every week for a few hundred people. Everything is rechargeable and wireless. After buying and trying several rechargeable options including, the New Soundboks, Anchor Audio Liberty 2 and the Roland BA 330; the Bose S1 Pro simply sounds the best. I tried the first version of the JBL EON ONE in the music store. It sounded "cheap" and had a comparably low threshold for distortion. I'm not seeing this in the other comments, but using headphones to listen to your video, I heard a very noticeable improvement in the level of clarity from the Bose. The JBL EON ONE, just sounded muddier to me...I felt like I could hear the price difference. I also had a bad experience with connectivity and latency when using wireless software to control eq, so I wouldn't want to use something that doesn't sound good without being connected to an app. Trouble is, as you mentioned, the S1 Pro is not quite loud enough. I've managed to get some extra headroom by running the guitar and vocal separately into a Sound Devices MixPre-D into a Ashly 31 band stereo eq and into channels 1 & 2 of the Bose. It sounds great, but I'm essentially I'm tying up money and carrying an 8 space rack around to squeeze a few more DB out of the system. Sennheiser recently came out with the XSW-D systems. I bought 3: used one for guitar & one for vocal to go directly into channels 1 & 2 of one Bose S1 PRO and then used the 3rd to daisy chain to the second Bose S1 Pro but discovered the threshold for distortion dropped so dramatically as to make daisy-chaining pointless. I'm likely going to buy an additional Sennheiser XSW-D, to "Y" the 2 incoming signals and send them to the two Bose S1 Pro's, but I'm STILL going to have to use the rack when I need the extra headroom. SO...I'm waiting patiently to get your live gig results, because if you say it's significantly louder, I'm going to probably buy a JBL EON ONE and check out the sound for myself. I feel like the real answer is going to come when Bose or QSC invents a battery powered speaker with an SPL of 120db or louder...thanks again for the work you've done here; very helpful!
App connectivity has been fine and I personally find it hard to use the controls on the S1 Pro. I much prefer the JBL in this regard. Using it at my gig last night I would say it has about as much volume as I would expect from a 120 speaker. The tone was really great too. I’ll have my final review up soon. I agree about someone making a higher end speaker like this but I am not sure there is a market for it. I love the XSW system as well but lately the guitar system has been suffering from interference. Connectivity issues can plague any system, especially in a city.
Kuan Ju Liu Thwnk you for watching. The great thing with the JBL is the advanced EQ settings in the app allow you to tweak them sound. With the S1 there is currently no way to do that...
"I'm not seeing this in the other comments, but using headphones to listen to your video, I heard a very noticeable improvement in the level of clarity from the Bose. The JBL EON ONE, just sounded muddier to me...." I hear what you are saying about the Compact's "muddier" sound vs the S1 Pro's "clarity". To me (and perhaps unfairly) this has always been the JBL house sound and one I've heard in other videos of the previous EON speakers compared to the S1 Pro. Nevertheless, one could argue that the S1 Pro has the opposite problem: it overly emphasizes the presence region, to the point that some have called it bright. Call up one of oluv's gadgets videos of the S1 Pro and you might also hear the same, particular with the S1 Pro running full throttle outdoors. IIRC he even called the S1 Pro "sizzling" or something to that effect. However, given one report of the Compact being too forward in upper mids/treble, I wonder if this may simply be an issue with the difference in vertical dispersion between the speakers. The S1 Pro has a linear (vertical) array of mid/treble drivers, and Aaron's near-field microphone position may have simply been in a bit of a dispersion null between the Compact's drivers. In other words, that muddy sound from the Compact might not be audible from a more reasonable distance. That would jive with Aaron's initial positive impression of the Compact from his gig. Regardless of my amateur audio theorizing, I also hear the Compact's apparent "muddiness" vs the S1 Pro. This is most obvious with Aaron's "processed" vs "no processing" comparisons, where the S1 Pro instantly shows the changes whereas I have to listen hard for them with the Compact. *Aaron*: thanks for making these videos (all of them, including the inspiring one on the singer's diet). They're really awesome.
Aaron Short Music Regarding the Compact’s EQ settings via the app: are all settings “remembered” for all inputs regardless of whether the phone that set them is still connected, powering down, battery replaced, etc?
Thanks! Bose has that clear, natural, spacious sound for acoustic instruments, just great.
I agree. The features on the JBL are outstanding.
Definitely the JBL especially with the Helix. Thanks, enjoyed this & has pushed me in the direction of the JBL. I’ve listened to many including in person & JBL for what my needs are.
I own both and the JBLproduces more natural tone from my acoustic(D28/ Lyric mic,JHS Colour BOX)
however, the tone from Bose unit is both pleasing and exciting, albeit distorted.
James Reese big thanks!🙏🏾
James Reese I’m curious as to why you feel the Roland is the best.
Benjamin DeMers I saw the product demo of the high powered stereo model and thought, “Oh that’s the Shit”
I just bought the Bose S1-Pro for $499.00 and it’s awesome thanks for your reviews.
Congrats Jerry!
If we pair 2 bose s1 we can use more input for live music ? Guitar keyboard and singer and drum ? Possible ?
Thank you for these videos, I'm considering buying a JBL and your videos have been very helpful!
To my ears, the S1 sounded a little more 'hi-fi', a little crisper than the JBL, which sounded a little bit more 'organic'. Sorry to use such soft terminology, they're just the best way I can think to explain it. I think I'd lean toward the JBL myself given the additional inputs, effects, and features.
Can't wait to get your feedback after using the JBL for a live gig!
Thanks Josh. I’ll have another video up soon. Thanks for watching.
Josh McCullough i think 2 of this jbl eon one compact and 2 subwoofer will be awesome for a party.

Thank you for watching!
It’s about the same. None of these battery speakers will get crazy loud. Choose the one with the best feature set for you.
As a violinist I would like to hear both speakers with flat and preferred eq…with a violin its much much more important to have warmth in a speaker….
Is eon compact distorting while playing techno on high volumes?
great presentation, thank you. what are your EQ settings? Specifically for speech or singing?
It really depends on your voice and microphone. I usually add a HPF and boost some trebles.
In order of importance for me in the machine is
1) Vocals ( and I am a baritone but sing wide variety)
2) MP3 backing tracks
3) Guitar ( electro acoustic).
Which machine would you say has edge if money was irrelevant.
Also consider the new EV Everse 8.
I agree. I take a QSC K8.2 and mixer when I can. These amps are definitely ‘grab and go’.
Curious. What are a few of the much better options in your opinion? I'd like to check them out.
Thanks for sharing, and for The Helix test 😉👍👍
In The acoustic test no much diference in my studio monitors and my studio headphones.... in the other hand... with The Helix the JBL , for me is a clear winner.
I agree. It’s a nice battery option for Helix!
Thank you Raja. I agree with you and cannot wait to see what comes next!
Thanks for the video. What kind of camera are you using for video?
Hi David. If you read the description below the video there is a link to the camera and lens that I am using.
I think it depends on what you want to use them for. I like the clear sound of the bose
I think that when the JBL gets the new and updated app I will have to have a rematch!
@@ubellubo planning to use this for dance classes, small social events, random home stuff, flash mobs etc. Hope the plans all go well.

Yes but you can EQ the JBL with it’s flexible and advanced app...
Thanks Gary, you can actually pair two S1 Pros as well but only for streaming music.
@@aaronshortmusic I see, I wonder if the JBL's Bluetooth pairing is also only for streaming music or if it works for playing live?
Gary Goh It’s the same. App control and iPod streaming.
A bit of a noticeable proximity effect when using microphone in unprocessed mode on both units. Not a deal breaker but an observation. Great presentation. Thanks.
Thanks Steve!
They are very comparable. My favorite right now is actually the Everse 8.
@@aaronshortmusic Thank you so much!
I agree. And compare them with your instrument and microphone etc.
Hi Aaron and thank for your video! Brilliant! I have only a question, does it work also without battery and simply connected to a socket?
Yes it can be used that way.
@@aaronshortmusic thank you!
Greatly appreciated.
Your videos are so useful. I do feel that the JBL gives a warmer sound in my opinion.
Thanks Tai. Yes it’s great and the EQ is SO powerful! Thanks for watching.
Preferring the BOSE personally, it just has a warmth to it, sounds epic for Rhodes and keyboard sorta stuff.
Aaron, Thank you for doing this side by side test! ..I'm considering the JBL. I play multiple acoustic shows per week. Looking forward to your "live" results! Thank you again..
You’re welcome. Coming soon!
Thanks for watching! I will have my full review soon and then I’ll probably do a follow up in a few weeks as well.

Thank you for your answer! This ratings are from the manufactures, maybe some third party SPL tests would show different values...
Thanks for sharing, Aaron!
Well done.
Thank you and yes the way the EQ Is set is everything!
The JBL hands down. I would run 2 in stereo.
Does the master volume level effect the output volume of the pass-through and/or headphone outputs?
...wondering that myself. I'll know by tomorrow after I've had a chance to test it out.

Can you play the bass in this thing?
Thanks! The JBL would probably be best for bass.
The Bose has a more compressed/flat sound compared to the JBL. The JBL has a live sound.
A lot can be done with EQ...

@@aaronshortmusic I m waiting for Bose S1 pro mark II, but it looks like they are not gonna release it any time soon :(
I have just got the bose just sing with backing tracks at home why I can't gig at the moment but I feel I have no control over the eq on the bt connection and also the reverb is not really to my taste.
Yes there is a ‘pass through’ that can be connected to another speaker/mixer etc.
Hi Aaron. I’m looking at both of these amps and can’t decide. I have one of my Martins with a K&K Mini. Which did you prefer with that pickup? Also, would I need to use a preamp to tailor my sound? Thanks
Hi Don. The JBL works great with the K&K as the EQ is more flexible.

No it does not. It is a cool feature of the S1 but it’s also good to be able to set it manually as it may not give the desired EQ.

LA
Wow thank you that means so much to me! If you do perform my song please take a video and send it to me. I would love to see it.
It is one of my favourites too, absolutely ideal for dancing to.

I am interested in the eon one compact but wondering if I’ll like the eon one pro better for coffee shops and music in the park?
It depends how much volume you need. I prefer the compact since it is so easy to carry around and would be loud enough for a coffee shop.
@@aaronshortmusic thanks for the reply! I hope to check out the compact!
Nice reviews, thanks. I'm wondering about the reach, or throw of both units. The S1 is rated 100° H x 40° V. I have been amazed the coverage the S1 lays down. Any thoughts on the Compact?
Also, when pairing more than one unit, is it just streaming, or will they go live? The S1 is just streaming.
ufdalea Just streaming I believe. I will test it tonight.
Nice video. The S1 has the 3-speaker array that really opens up at a distance. Curious how it compares.

Anyway, I bought the JBL, which has replaced the Fishman Loudbox mini charge ( which sounds maybe a little richer on my guitar, but the vocals aren't as good, plus it's heavier).
after experience what do you think for guitar / vocal / keyboard between S1 and eon Compact ?
@@vincentdelmas2792 I don't know about keyboard, but voice and guitar sound better IMO on the JBL - The JBL just sounds more robust overall. So, I would guess it would be better for keys too, but YMMV, etc. Hope that helps.
I want to buy one of the 2 for personal use which you recommend which has more power and audio quality
That’s too hard to answer. They are both equally good for different reasons. It depends on how and where you are going to use them but they are both excellent.
Aaron Short Music thank you it is for my normal use at home and to take it to meetings with friends I will stay with the JBL
Mavic Mini The JBL has more features but the Bose is smaller. They are both great.

@@thirdgearband You’re welcome. As always it’s just my opinion and knowledge and you should check with Bose for the official info :-)
Maybe squeezing their abilities as much as possible to understand who surrenders first
Thanks
Hi. I could do that but from what you’re saying it would be the JBL because it uses an 8” speaker and can handle lower frequencies than the Bose.
@@aaronshortmusic OK thanks.

I think the Bose sounded well.... over the JBL EON ONe Compact
The Bose is more ‘plug and play’ but the JBL has more options if you want/need to take the time.

They are about the same depending on how you have the EQ set and the instrument that you are using. The S1 Pro may be (or appear to be) slightly louder but only slightly.

i just bought the Bose s1 pro, the money is worth , Bose copied the Carvin Stagemate 600 system 2016,which carry 1 / 5 inches woofer ,and on top 4 tweeters in a bridge all of them neodymium speakers, The Bose s1 pro carry 1 woofer and on top a bridge with 3 tweeters ,all of them neodymium speakers which give a clear sound for the guitar (i use chorus pedal) The microphone , only use the bass volume in "0" and highs in "7 ". and the guitar set up is 2' for the bass and 6' for the high frequency, the bass is so powerful, the only only problem is effects ,the Bose only carry "reverb" and is very flat , so i use extra pedal"delay" for my guitar and sound good, i use Sennheiser e943 for microphone and both are only i volumen 6 for for 200 feet, good enough volume. the Bose recharge in 5 hours.
Any update about power output comparison?
The JBL EON ONE, just sounded muddier to me...."
I hear what you are saying about the Compact's "muddier" sound vs the S1 Pro's "clarity".
Kuan Ju Liu Yes they are and you can even save and recall snapshots of settings!
Which one would be the best for vocals?
I would get the JBL as you can fine tune the EQ if needed for your voice.
