    2 years ago I bought a used 2001 Suburban w/ 5.3L engine LM7 (cast iron block), 290k miles, runs great [This is pre-AFM]. I Use it in winters for a 4k mile trip. First winter it guzzled one quart of oil every 800-900 miles. Fixed all external leaks but still gulped a quart every 800-900 miles. Once back home I installed this valve cover. It killed that oil consumption problem DEAD! The next winter I changed the oil immediately prior to the annual 4k mile trip. Made the trip and now back home using it for my daily errand car. Haven't had to add any oil !! Looks like it'll make it to the 7500 mile oil change interval, or close to it. AFM or pre-AFM, these engines were prone to gulp major oil by ingestion through the PCV valve delivering it right into the intake manifold. This valve cover will kill that mechanism of oil consumption.

    Great videos! 220k on our 2007 Silverado 5.3 . It has a P0300 mostly on cylinder 3. I'm used to PCV valves being replaceable but since this valve cover hasn't been updated it may be a smart move. I've already popped the cover off to check for a stuck lifter but it's fine. The inside valve cover/pcv hole was covered black

    Chris, Great Video very informative. I have a 2017 GMC Sierra. The low oil level light has been coming on frequently and oil consumption seems excessive. Would the fix for the 2nd generation be the same for my 3rd generation (2017) . Should I start by checking the #7 spark plug?

    • @Dino30ish
      @Dino30ish 3 года назад

      Yours is supposed to have the updated system already , with new piston ring design , piston skirt baffles , the valve cover and the low oil light ... The AFM system seems to be the main cause from what I am finding out .. Get a programmer and turn it off is the only option ive seen beside sea foaming the engine to clear the carbon off the pistons, and hopefully the rings .

      Brad Stanley you can if you want change all 4. Or for that matter all 8 on the vehicle. I just don’t change them unless they have a problem. No sense in changing a perfectly good part. Now if the other plugs are skipping or fouled. Change them for sure.

      @@cdarnau what is pull over the problem is the oil don't drain out of the baffle before it gets to the pcv port

    • @cdarnau
      @cdarnau  3 года назад

      @@shaunnesbit1734 The pull over problem is a mixture between a weak PCV and oil sitting on top of the baffle and getting pulled over. If you drill more holes you're not going to drain any faster. There is a 2in gap for draining. If that's not draining fast enough you have other problems. The problem is the weak PCV pulling oil from the baffle. Regardless of how many holes you put there you are still going to pull oil. Lets say you cut the whole baffle out and shield the PCV so no oil can get pulled. You will still have a weak PCV causing other fuel trim related issues with the vehicle.

    • @tygibbs15
      @tygibbs15 4 года назад

      @Tom Wetz Your truck should have the new style valve cover. January 2011 was when GM made the switch so every 5.3l after Jan. '11 will have the new. If you're having to add a quart of oil every 1,500 miles, you have more problems than just the valve cover unfortunately. :(

      Currently have this problem on my 06 5.3 vortex. Added a catch can to see how much oil was pulling thru the pcv hose. Drove 200 miles and have 12 oz of oil. That explains the smoke. Will replace valve cover or perhaps weld shields over the holes in the baffles that are lined up with the lifter oil stream.

  • @dwjw1
    @dwjw1 5 лет назад

    The valve cover has no effect on oil consumption at all. The problem is that oil is ingested into the engine somehow and is associated with AFM system on those vehicles - the pcv was a good candidate as the culprit, but from my experience with the 5.3 L engine exhibiting this problem, the issue of oil consumption is directly connected to the AFM lifter failure. This engine did not have the new cover, but ingested oil at a terrific rate for a short time intermittently while the failure was occurring. Personally, I think that the oil consumption would have occurred even with a new cover installed, but I don't know for certain.
    If the oil is ingested just before the intake stroke on #7, then the black stuff on the plug will be only on #7 and to a lesser extent on the next plug in the firing order.
    The oil consumption issue occurs until the AFM is removed. Somehow the lifters are introducing the oil into the intake as they fail. The AFM lifters have a number of failure modes - all having to do with oil injection on the lifter because that is how the mechanism alters the operation of those four AFM cylinders. So why did they look to the pcv?
    The only way that the pcv could be involved would be if the oil was somehow introduced into the area around #7 cylinder in large enough quantities just before intake into #7 occurred. And it would have to be gone before it affected other cylinders. Give me a break. That cover change is a waste of time and money.
    If all of the spark plugs look like #7 to some extent, I would say that it is possible that the pcv is picking up oil and pulling it out of the area where it connects to the crankcase (above #7 cylinder). However, it is nearly impossible to suggest a method by which the amount of oil burned can be ascribed to #7 being fouled (BTW the spark plug that you are showing might be burning some oil, but it should not have fouled the plug - indeed the plug shows that it has been operating properly lately, note the tan-colored tip.
    Whatever the case, I have serious doubts that this will relieve the consumption issue on most AFM engines. In the meantime, replacing a $70 part will gain the company a steady new stream of income hmmm?

      Ok, So I actually thought about just deleting your message. I have not done that in the past on any of my videos, I normally just try to explain why the people are wrong but from your long explanation covering the same point multiple times I am pretty sure it won't help. So I will do this to your long explanation.
      First. I would like start off by saying. In my experience (20 years of working at the same GM dealership and 5 years of teaching auto mechanics in college) I have seen this valve cover fix 90% of the oil consumption problems including the skip caused by a fouled out plug (which was not working when the vehicle was being repaired, hence the reason it was at my shop). I was going to explain why, But I will just direct you to the video which I am pretty sure I did a paint by numbers explanation in.
      Second. I would like to direct you to GM Service bulletin #10-06-01-008M . I have actually looked it up and you can follow this link which will explain it further. So you have my explanation in the video and GM's engineering team who has way more experience than I have. static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2012/SB-10062524-7690.pdf
      Third. You have some valid points other than the fact you really don't understand how this system works. The thing I would like to point out that you are correct on, is that you possibly could have an AFM failure causing an oil consumption or because anything is possible. On the other hand, the rest of your post is incorrect and inaccurate. But I do appreciate you watching the video and replying. I am not here to try to sell someone parts for there vehicle that I have not PERSONALLY seen fix vehicles. My current vehicle had this problem, the cover was replaced and I have not had any other issues with it.
      Lastly. I pulled this from the bulletin itself. This condition may be caused by two conditions. Oil
      pulled through the PCV system or oil spray that is discharged from the AFM pressure relief valve within the crankcase. Under most driving conditions and drive cycles, the discharged oil does not cause a problem. Under certain drive cycles (extended high engine speed operation), in combination with parts at the high end of their tolerance specification, the oil spray quantity may be more than usual, resulting in excessive deposit formation in the piston ring grooves, causing increased oil consumption and cracked or fouled spark plugs (#1 and/or #7).

    Burned the original motor. We put the new crate in, turned off the AFM, updated the valve cover and she still burns nearly two Quarts between changes. Just don’t buy one of these trucks. It’s safer
