  • Home made camcorder super capacity pack from 18650 Li-ion battery cells. I'm tired of my small capacity battery pack from my camcorder which makes it pretty much useless when I need it the most. So I went ahead and built one myself.

This is similar to some of the mods I have done to my video cameras. One in particular, a Kodak Zi8, can now run and record for 11 hours on 2 3400mAh cells. All of the cameras I have this kind of mod done to are 3.7V cameras, so I have the cells set up in a 2P configuration. The difference with my 18650-mods is I always use a battery box, so that I can change out the cells when they get low and charge them in my OPUS BT-C3400 charger. Also, the camera's original battery is replaced with the 18650-mod. I solder the wires from the battery box to the original power terminals inside the camera. The only protection I include is a series 3A fuse for short protection. The camera generally takes care of shutting off power before the cells get too low. And with my cameras being in a 1S configuration, no need to worry about cell balancing.

Airport security would have a heart attack seeing that on the xray machine 😄

This video is similar to something I have tried with my sony handycam, but ended up doing it wrong, and shorted it out, but at least I know that it could work if I had wired it up correctly.

Would it be possible to just rip open the battery and solder to the original cell connections? Or does the battery have its capacity programmed in? I'm thinking about doing the same thing but with a Panasonic camcorder that has a 3.7V (4.2V) pack.

only thing i would do, is put the battery pack in a box of some kind, so people dont think you carrying a bomb

I was trying to do this with my Sony CCD-TRV68 bc i ran out of infolithium L batteries and when i plugged everything in, i turned on the camcorder and the "for infolithium only" message popped up in the screen and then it shutted off. Why it works for a most modern camcorder and not for one of the end 90s? Do you know any solution to this error? infolithium L batteries are a lil expensive for me :(

@vuaeco - you really should charge a 2S battery with a balance charger like any other lipo; once the batteries are a bit older they will not charge / discharge in the same time like when they are new. Just to avoid future fires. Stay safe.

I'm thinking something like this with a longer cord and a belt clip on the battery pack would be the killer app for this so that the camcorder's functions aren't being interfered with when this battery is hooked up. My FDR-AX33 has zoom adjustment, still photo button, flash mount, and surround microphone on top so mounting up top would be a no-no. The belt clip for the battery could then be hung off the hand loop when tripod mounting the camera. 1.5 hours just isn't enough for family holidays and those Series V Sony batteries are a ripoff. You've got me thinking...

Would be better if you add protection and over discharge circuit? They are dirt cheap on Ebay.

Get a solar charger for USB, or a Battery pack with USB and connect to your DC connection on your cam corder.
