    Regarding the bonkers whip range, Erebos uses Mastix to lash souls of the dead that try to escape from the Underworld and drag them back. He can do so no matter where in the Underworld he is relative to the would-be escapee, so that feature is a nod to his use of the whip as jailer. :)

    Fun fact: at the current point in the story for Theros, Thassa has lost Dekalla to a Merfolk planeswalker named Kiora, who hails from Zendikar. Kiora specializes in controlling monsters of the ocean, and gained control of the bident when she tried to take control of the leviathan that the lost city of Arixmethes was built on, and met Thassa face to face. They fought and Thassa was winning, until Kiora tricked Thassa into allowing her to talk and then planeswalked away with Dekalla. Currently, Thassa is using a spear made by Purphoros

    • @samtheactualkenku6205
      @samtheactualkenku6205 4 года назад +10

    I think the variations in Piety abilities are meant to be representative of the god tied to the weapon. Heliod is the authoritarian of the Theros pantheon, so it tracks that his weapon would care the most about your devotion to him. Nylea is the free spirit, so her weapon has the fewest abilities that care about piety.

    I have a character who uses a whip, reflavored as one of the chains that kept him chained to a wall, but the reason I think most people don't use them is because it's essentially a dagger but is restricted to characters with a martial weapon proficiency, so most classes can't even use it, and the ones who can use it have better options for damage output. Even the rogue, who would be able to use it the best, would probably prefer a regular dagger still because it has a thrown range and can be hidden away easier then a whip

    Fun fact, Erebos is isn't considered evil despite being the god of death. He simply manages the Underworld and exercises the inevitably of death itself.
    In Theros Beyond Death, Heliod was actually the bad guy as he had killed his champion out of fear and vanity, then begins to try to unseat all the other gods. This starts a war where his champion can escape the Underworld, and convinces the majority population that krusor, heliods real spear, was a fake imitation of her spear. Since Theros works off belief, the spear shatters. Then heliod gets a punishment not unlike Atlas, and that's the last we heard of him. Some GOOOOD Greek level stuff.

      issue is they cut and pasted these from the card game. no ones main weapon was a staff. id assume if they made one fore Keranso or Karametra it'd be for casters

    • @Kahadi
      @Kahadi 4 года назад +2

      Considering the lore of Theros, it doesn't make sense for there to be things for casters. Magic comes from Nyx, the realm of dreams where the gods reside. It is an inherent ability of beings of Nyx, namely the gods and the Nyxborn creatures, or those whom are beings effectively made of magic. Normal beings able to cast magic do so through the power of Nyx and of the gods. Its more divine, a matter of faith, than nature. If you read what sort of stuff it says, its fairly uncommon and low magic outside of faith based stuff, at least thematically. Those who cast magic do so because they are destined, fated, chosen by the gods to accomplish great tasks, or because they worship a specific god enough to be granted the ability through them. Obviously, this is more through interpretation, but just look at how they explain things. There's little mention of magic when talking about lore, except when talking about the powers of the gods or the ways they help mortals. None of the gods really embody magic. The closest that really fits to aiding casters is the piety system often allowing innate spellcasting abilities. Besides, the artifacts are meant to be the weapons of the major gods, what they use themselves to fight each other, and when they have such innate magical abilities, it doesn't make sense for them to have artifacts with only use for spellcasting. Instead, the weapons they have give a weapon and grant magical abilities

    • @Kahadi
      @Kahadi 4 года назад

      @@danielgold9487 Keranos and Karametra are minor gods, not as powerful as the major five gods like Heliod. They wouldn't get their own artifacts. But even if they did, Keranos is iffy to say, but why would Karametra, goddess of harvest, get a caster ability? Most likely would be Kruphix and Klothys, gods of Destiny and Horizons, embodying fate and the future

    Isn't Erebos a good guy in the lore? Idk I'm not well versed in the MtG story. Everyone went to Hades when they died and were sorted depending on how good and bad they were

    • @silvinity4939
      @silvinity4939 4 года назад +1

      From what I remember Erebos isn't so much good as neutral. Death comes for everyone, and you can either embrace it when it's your time or you can try to escape it, kinda like that. He does however pardon Elspeth (the main character of the theros story) for escaping from the underworld and allows her to come back to life because she succeeds in locking Heliod in the underworld, and Erebos really hates Heliod.

  • @Kahadi
    @Kahadi 4 года назад

    Regarding why the gods would give out these artifacts, the text at the top of each one's description states why they might. For example, Purphoros rarely lends it to mortals, but often leaves it unattended, so its more likely to be stolen than given. When it is given, its to create something special or to prevent something being destroyed.
    Also, in regards to destroying the artifacts, the alignments of the gods tend to be more... Subjective than objective, at least in terms of good vs evil, though the earlier chapters listing information about them will way what alignments best suit their champions, though does also say champions don't necessarily worship the god that champions them. For example, Erebos is often considered evil, ruling over dead and wanting the dead to remain that way. He is also against Heliod, whom is viewed as good. However, in the MTG sets that happened in Theros, Heliod started a war among the gods and killed his own champion because she was too powerful, thanks to his own influence. So Erebos is evil because he opposes Heliod... But Heliod is arrogant and prideful to the point of starting war to prove his strength and killing someone he chose to fight for him out of fear she was more powerful than him. And when Heliod lost the war, Erebos was the one to punish him, and thanked the champion Heliod betrayed by allowing her to return to life. So... which sounds more evil? Its a matter of perspective and situation.
    Another reason one might want to destroy an artifact of the gods, aside from a mission from an opposing god, would be if one was a Leonin or other iconoclast, loathing the gods as a whole. Or, one could be tricked into doing it by another. As am example using the lore, an Archon attempting to take back rule over Theros from the gods might convince a party that the gods have done something wrong and deserve to be punished by destroying their weapons, or might trick them into thinking the weapons were stolen and makes them think they are retrieving them, and may lead them to believe that what they are doing will return the weapons to the gods instead of actually destroying them, either option being an attempt to weaken the gods so the Archon might defeat them while pinning the blame on mortals should the plan fail.

    Purphoros is neither good or evil (like all the Therosian gods). He's loving, caring, loyal and creative, but also explosive, vengeful and (again, like all the Therosian gods) spiteful.
    Also, destroying Mastix is even harder than you made it sound. Not only do you have to bring it to the holiest place in the realm of the gods, an UNDEAD has to unwind it there. The Returned are an abomination to most of the gods of Nyx, so getting one into what is essentially Heliod's throne room is going to get you smote with great prejudice.

And that's a huge issue because most bow users are trying to be creative and fluent and they just can't be. Could've done better is all I'm saying, cause for an artifact item it's not exactly what anyone would eagerly go for. Whip is a disappointment too, for that +1 detrimental effect it should have more spells related to the undead like how the hammer had 4. Theres plenty of necromancy spells to have chosen from, and for one of the two spells to just be something from the enchantment class is a bit of a let down. Hammer was well made, as was the spear. Bident would be an amazing thing to give a pirate tyrant of the seas too

    This might have little to do with your video, which I enjoyed. Mainly cause it tells me is it is worth me spending the money.
    But I have been thinking a good bit lately about what products D&D has been putting out.
    Wildmount, Ravnica, and Theros might be cool new settings but how many people really wanted them?
    If there is a lot then fine. Always smart business to go with the masses, but I highly doubt it.
    Personally, I want old settings reimagined. I want Spelljammer, Darksun, or Mystara.
    I know I can't just get what I want but I know I am not alone.
    I guess I am not interested in any of the MTG inspired settings because they don't feel connected to anything else.
    I don't know anything about those settings and have not felt that just saying here is a new setting is enough to get our attention.
    Maybe it would be more interesting if there was something to pull people in. I literally don't know how I would add Ravnica or Theros into my game.
    All I see is the cool new races, subclasses, or ideas they offer like the piety system, that make me want to tweak it and use it in the Forgotten Realms.
    Mainly because we have gotten very little for the Forgotten Realms outside of adventure books. Personally, I own most of the 3rd ed Forgotten Realms books
    So, I can easily adjust this stuff for my table, but most people playing D&D today know nothing of the past. And I am sorry, but if you just want to kill what has been why did they buy it?

    Uh the problem with whips is it is relatively low damage and martial so it gets passed over for better damage options

      1d4 and reach with a whip or ~1d8 and reach with a polearm

    Is it just me or is the bow underpowered compared to the others?

      I think it is, which makes me sad. I am fine with it being a shortbow (although longbow would have definitely made it more powerful) but I would personally just put in an extra major beneficial property at 50+
