  • Once again Theros adds a new system/mechanic as part of the base game, the Piety system. While this system is technically not new (it was in the DMG), this version quantifies it with rewards and specific ways to increase your piety. This system combined with the Supernatural Gifts from the last video will truly make your Theros characters champions worthy of a god's favor. What do you think about it?

    I think the reason some of the piety benefits are stronger than others is because each god asks something different of you which can severely change how you play. For example, Athreos (the first god) only grants you benefits if you don't go and loot corpses or raid tombs and dungeons, which is like one of the core things you do in DnD.

      @@TaberIV the way it's broken down on the MtG side of the lore is that the 5 main gods each represent one of the five colors of mana in MtG. The other ten gods each repesent one of the ten possible two color combos of those five colors.
      So the 5 greater gods are more broadly defined in their spheres of influence and desires. White mana wants what white mana wants. While the ten lesser gods are focused on one specific aspect of life. Red and blue combine to form a very different beast from red and black, and neither of those combos is going to mesh well with pure red, blue, or black. Similar to the individual focuses of the ten guilds of Ravnica.

    It's worth noting that the piety system is also used in a couple other places. The new artifacts all have benefits based on piety of their associated major God. There are also two supernatural gifts that use piety, one replacing your God's normal stuff and one for impious individuals that is based on level.

    What you could do is translate the piety of the gods into something along the lines of “paths”. So when someone picks their god, they can choose one of the representations of said god, then they pick a matching “path”. For example, a player could pick helm, and follow the path of honor (Iroas).

    In Theros there are 15 total gods, technically 16 if you include Xenagos. There are 5 major gods (Heliod, Thassa, Erebos, Purphoros, and Nylea) and 10 minor gods (Athreos, Kruphix, Karametra, Phenax, Iroas, Mogis, Keranos, Ephara, Klothys, and Pharika). If you're curious about Xenagos, he was a satyr who achieved godhood with the portfolios of revelry and madness before being killed by Heliod's former champion and later victim, Elspeth Tirel. But because Xenagos died in Nyx and not on the Mortal Realm, he was cast among the stars of Nyx as opposed to Elspeth, who did die on the Mortal Realm and was sent to the Underworld.

      Well it is just for the Theros gods, and it’s suggested domains. It’s all up to the DM really. I’m sure life could fit a lot of gods, you could even argue that “death gods” could have life domain clerics if the clerics really focus on death just being another part of life. It’s a bit of a stretch, but you get the idea. Suggested domains aren’t exclusive.

    • @vincentandre8500
      @vincentandre8500 4 года назад

      Remember, 5e clerics don’t actually get their power from their gods, but their devotion and worship. They can realistically have any domain for any god if they’re devoted enough.

  • @Master_E444
    @Master_E444 4 года назад

    The only thing I have issue with is how Erebos’ alignment is labeled as a Neutral Evil with the Death Domain instead of the Grave Domain. I’m a Major Erebos fan and I’ve known his lore Well in how he’s described. He more fits either Lawful Evil at worst or, in my opinion Lawful Neutral since he mostly just does his job as the God of the Dead. I always imagined him as like Kelemvor or the Raven Queen in that their gods of Death in that they just manage the dead and keep them on a tight leash. More jealous of Heliod to give a bit more of a negative leaning but that's honestly fully justified
    A Neutral Evil God of death would probably be more like Vecna in that they cause death for the sake of growing their own power and because they wish to. The worst aspects I could bring up about Erebos is that he hates and is jealous of Helios but Heliod is far from the good sun god he’s portrayed as in this book and Erebos can make dark deals but he always honors them (Lawful) and he never forces anyone into them or tricks them by lying (Neutral). He’s kinda like the more traditional representation of Hades in that he’s not nice by any means but he’s not actively malicious (again Neutral), and is just doing the job he has to because no one else will (Lawful again). Heck he specifically is described as being patient because he knows all Mortals eventually belong to him at the end of their lives. That’s more just outright facts more then anything really.
    Whenever I play or run a game in Theros, I’m going to personally demand or enforce that Erebos is Lawful Neutral or at worst Lawful Evil and that he has the Grave Domain. The Grave Domain just fits him even better than the Death Domain since it has to deal with preventing Death prematurely and making sure the undead are actually dead once more. The perfect Domain for him. I’m willing to allow him both Death and the Grave domain though and while I’m aware he has the Trickery Domain, I just don’t know why at all honestly. Also just for the record, yes they referenced Xanathar Domains for other Gods so it’s not that they don’t want to use Xanathar stuff.

      The way I see it; Erebos is similar to Shar, and Heliod is similar to Pholtus. Erebos and Shar are both nihilistic deities of darkness who discourage hope and offer "solace" to their followers through acceptance of misfortune, while Heliod and Pholtus are uncompromising deites of the Sun and law who believe they are the greatest of the gods and demand that their followers blindly follow them, believing it to be for their own good, or be marked as heathens.

    Being tied to an ability score feels like it's too slanted towards classes who have that as a primary stat. I can see the flavor argument for a cleric being better at channeling a god's power than a fighter, but mechanics wise it feels off for a setting's inque thing to unevenly effect game balance. I'd probably want it to be prof mod per rest instead

    While it looked attractive to me at first, I've decided Mythic Odysseys of Theros isn't for me.
    I like the idea of piety, just not so much the application in this case. I'd possibly be in favor of using a similar system for divine casters to recover spell slots. Essentially, folding the piety concept into the existing system/gameplay. Because between this and Supernatural Gifts, it tries to add too much in the way of fiddly new subsystems. I try to keep my D&D running as lean as I can get away with. I can see these additional rules working splendidly for something like Pathfinder rather than D&D5.
    Meanwhile, there's not quite enough of the stuff I would use (races and subclasses) to justify the purchase of the book.
    (This is all my opinion, of course. For those of you who like the book, great.)

      The more I go over it the more I am not sure how you don’t think it’s better or as good.
      I like guilds as well, but none of my friends do. I am the only one.
      They all like following gods.
      Also technically you could have guilds and piety. It’s a system that isn’t intended to stack but in home games makes perfect sense to stack.

    It annoys me that WotC insists on forcing gods into specific alignments based off of their domains. Erebos definitely isn't evil. Spiteful, angry, and out for revenge, sure, but if that alone constituted being evil all stereotypical rogues would be Satan. And Heliod sure as hell ain't good. The god is based off of Zeus in terms of personality and Apollo/Helios in terms of domain. And it most certainly shows, multiple times.

    • @conradkorbol
      @conradkorbol 4 года назад

      Most rogues in early d and d were evil. You couldn’t even play an assassin if you weren’t evil.
      On top of this that’s how the alignments describe stuff. So you may not agree with their interpretation of good and evil, but those don’t exist.
      These are religious terms.
      Is a hark who brutally murders a snake evil? No, but a human who does it is.
      So these gods are the purest form of it. So his spite and anger and revenge are way worse than rogue.
      You fuck with him he murders your family. Greek god stuff

      Erebos keeps his subjects in a tortuous realm, twists souls to hatred to create monsters to keep them in fear, and causes them to suffer until they abandon all hope and no longer care. He also let loose titan on the mortal realm; of course he's evil. As for Heliod, think of him as Lawful Good at it's worst. If the pantheon was an adventuring party, Heliod is the Lawful Stupid Paladin that patronizes the others. He is the sort of thing Mordenkainen fears would be if Lawful Good tried to upset the balance. Give him some credit; he did send champions to take down Erebos' titan and Polukranos. Besides, Wizards of the Coast created these characters, they can do whatever they want with them.

    Technically, the triton depth part is indeed no longer relevant UNLESS you follow/use environment rules outside of the DMG as the only thing it did is give them the ability to ignore the environment rule for light in great depths. Tho, in a game which also uses Saltmarsh (underwater locations and ocean environment) rules or any similar case where a module adds extra variant rules, it would've come in handy (just as heavy armor speed drop and flying armor restrictions should IMO always note that if using proper encumbrance rules, only apply the downsides if over your carry capacity, not by category).

    • @conradkorbol
      @conradkorbol 4 года назад

      Yeah I thought the new rules in slat marsh only required you to be able to breathe under water.
      Also I think you should have to magic armor to be underwater.
      Medal syncs. That’s why it’s hard to swim. Unless you have a natural swim speed
      The fly thing I don’t think should matter unless you have wings. Then I agree it should strength

      @@conradkorbol Nah, stuff like lure lights, currents, whirlpools, depth light, etc all apply no matter if you got swim speed or not, but they are underwater environmental effects (thus would be ignored by tritons), DMG is the only part that has a effect on it and it merely gives the "no exhaustion or swim cap if you have swim speed". And metal itself (for almost all but late heavy plate/pre jousting armor) isnt the issue, its the gambeson/padding underneath getting wet which gives the weight/swim problem.
