Supernatural Gifts in Mythic Odysseys of Theros! | Nerd Immersion

- One of the most interesting and awesome parts of Mythic Odysseys of Theros is the new Supernatural Gifts mechanic. This is an ability/feature that characters get at level 1 due to their ties to a god, powerful being, etc. I really love this concept and want to try and incorporate it into future campaigns. What are your thoughts on this?

That first gift that makes you like a Warforged seems based off of the metal beings Hephaestus had in mythology.
And also Talos...
That mention of Hercules: The Legendary Journeys made me smile.
Ares as a love god throwing sparkly hearts around will never stop being funny to me.
WotC: feats are variant rule and optional. Everyone: nah bud. Feats are core game. - PS: I’m absolutely using these in my homebrew.
This is the way.
I don’t use multiclass and feats in my game. So not everyone :)
@@falconforgefantasy9496 You're boring, tbh. No multiclass I entirely understand and prefer, but no feats? Really? Imagine having no traits.
G80 GZT And yet my table is never empty. Good luck, just because our fun is different, doesn’t mean you should insult people. Try to be better!

So, the common house rule of getting a feat at first level is kinda sorta an official option now? Sweet!
Thanks for the video. Stay safe!
It is in theros setting if the DM wants to play in theros
that's a common house rule? I've never seen that outside of variant humans
@@Sasqmo some people do it to keep people from picking human
Personally I'd rather a race have interesting racial abilities than just handing everyone a feat.
I let my group get a bonus feat for a character background. Our table enjoys the RP element of DnD.

i think people are really gonna love the piety system
I know I already do
Based on my knowledge of Theros lore from MTG, most the subclasses from Xanathar's really do fit in the world. In fact, it's probably easier to list the ones that don't fit: Samurai and Swashbuckler (unless they're really reflavoured), and Drunken Master (for anyone except a satyr).
As for the supernatural gifts, I think they're awesome, but I have one minor gripe: GIVE ME MORE. There could be SO many more of these, which would add a metric butt-ton of variety to character creation.
I reckon you could still use the Samurai subclass and just say its a Hoplite instead, many of the features still work. Not sure what term could be used for a swashbuckler but it still fits, I kind of feel thats what Perseus comes close to being in the original myths
Definitely like the idea of something new being available to PCs at 1st level. I've always agreed with you that we should have been allowed a feat at 1st level that you could incorporate into the backstory without having to shoehorn something, or by only ever playing variant humans.
My players love having powerful characters but don't like all the book keeping that come at higher levels so to help them with that feel we start everyone with a feat and if you chose variant human you get an additional feat
PCs in Theros are gonna be so much more powerful than PCs in regular settings
They are supposed to be mythic héroes, like those of antient Greece, choose, love, helped, bolstered by the gods themselves to go on a quest no mere mortal could do.
Joseph Williams That is kind of the point
Anvilwrought Leonin Druid. Beast wars come to life!
Epic!
Appreciate the 3 AM upload, now I can sleep even later.
Bored third shift employees appreciate the dysfunctional upload schedule, but seriously thanks for helping me refresh and stay awake on duty.
Personally, I wanna start off as with a Human Cleric of Erebos (I’m 100% Certain He’ll have the Grave Domain and I like that Domain). I’d like to start with the Nyxborn Gift and work my way up to using his Weapon. Just a few ideas I got. Personally I hope to see the Artifact Weapons soon since I like them a lot.
I can confirm your hopes will be met.
Erebos connects to Death and Trickery domains. Athreos the god is, who connects to Death and Grave domains.
@@DBebeful although you could still use the Erebos whip, maybe Athreos is using his influince to let you use the weapon of Erebos but use your piety with Athreos intead of your piety with Erebos to unlock the abilities of the whip
18:40 I would say that you already have to spend an above average amount of time to get that feeling. Of course you often see the same builds, that's a remnant of older edition's "ivory tower" design, that causes players to want to pick the most effective stuff. But there is a lot to experiment and experience. Did you ever play or play with a Kobold Barbarian? Wolf totem giving others advantage while you have advantage yourself from pack tactics sounds like a fun thing to try out.
Jan D. thats very true. tho i feel 5e has done a decent job at keeping most thing's somewhat viable. there jsut needs to be a little more support for certain archetypes imo. maybe thats jsut eith the lack of books. but ive played mostly multiclass builds that srent typical and kept up alright with my optimized party members in my own ways.
Surprised they won't let you use Aasimar.
Would fit right in with all the demigod heroes in Greek mythology
Also, the divine gifts seem like a great way to motivate clerics into actually role-plying
I'm pretty sure you can mix and match if you're homebrewing. Yet it would be cool to see more of the piety system. Yet I would love to play if I can find time.
As someone who wants to be a game dev I think D&D is a great way to jump into game design.
Yes, characteristics tables! I love when these are added to races, classes or anything else!
I really enjoy the supernatural gifts and piety in general. It gives a lot more reason for people to delve into the deities instead of just "oh yeah my character follows this god." The system has a very wide room for expansion with all of the different settings and gods that there are, and implementation into a core (say PHB 2) would be very welcome from me.
With the totem barbarian, you can always flavour it as lionen worship different aspects of the lion, instead of just the lion
This is exactly like the "Boon System" i am working on for my games (mechanically speaking). It will be a good inspiration~
Give them as rewards for completing the work of the Gods, if they are producing a Greek style realm then characters, other than Clerics etc, would have interactions with the Gods, be set tasks etc
Love this, I remember reading the one in explorers guide to wildemount and wanted more so this is great to me.
It’s great! I already homebrewed a very similar system for one of my worlds with strong ‘meddling gods’. I also have a sub system called ‘blessings; which are temporary buffs I pass out as a card. For example; Put an offering at a shrine and recently did an ‘act of worship’ the blessing is always based on the domains, powers and alignment of the deity.
Iolaus and Gabriel!!!! Forever Sidekicks that became their own things, lol I loved Hercules and Xena.
Gabrielle.... 😏👍
I’d love to see more about the gods of Theros and how they can be made into the villain
Look into MTG. The most recent Theros set was entirely about revenge against Heliod, God of the Sun who betrayed his champion after she killed another God for him.
I'd love level 1 feats.
I really liked how it was in 3.5
I do the super natural gifts anyways by giving the players an additional feat at 1st level, and I also tend to start players at level 3 as that really just launches them into the campaign by removing a lot of the grind and monotony involved with getting started
Seemingly nobody else is commenting on the Pride Month Nerd Immersion shirt! I think it looks really cool, nice job Ted. I really appreciate your uploads :D
Just saw it, looks real nice tbh
Xander Michael
Things totally can be rainbow coloured and not be for pride! I agree. I know that this shirt is for pride month for two reasons:
1. It has six colours, as used in pride flags. The generic rainbow usually contains 7.
2. On Ted’s Teespring page, items with this design have ‘Pride’ in the name.
@@leem4386 Eh, on point 1, every depiction of a rainbow I have seen has 6 colours, it's almost like people don't think indigo is a real colour.
Nukestarmaster
Yeah that’s true. Although Newton only said there were 7 colours to fit the Christian rule of 7. I personally see 4-5 colours in a rainbow when i see one.
15:26 Theros has a statement in it on page 17: "Aside from humans, the races in the player's handbook are unknown to Theros, unless they are visiting from other worlds."
For any single player D&D campaigns, I feel like Heroic Destiny is just a good perk to give the player character, especially because, at the very most, they'd only have a companion at their back, and it gives the PC a chance for the dice rolls to not compromise them.
Cyclops, Amazon, are 2 more from that world theme that should be in there.
I m running a Sword Bard - Swashbuckler Rogue in a friend's campaign.
Absolutely brilliant, he's a traveling bard that tries hard to match up the heroic myths of the setting; except he's a bit sly, opportunistic, acts before thinking and 8 Int 6 Wis you know where this is going.
On top of that, he's an Halfling trying to be intimidating 😂
I like that they're adding stuff like this. I was actually working out something similar for my group before this came out, so now I've got a framework to match and balance it with. (Edit: fixing my stupid autocorrect)
Ted, I get that it might start to feel like the edition is getting stale, but I have one main point that I love about the slow roll-out of resources: It allows for a large majority of the player base to not get buried under options that are linked to a multitude of disparate resources that you'd have to acquire in order to leverage. This edition is the most widely-played edition ever and so knowing that, complicating the game via dumping resources on the community for a quick buck undermines the long-term goals of the property. I love the fact that the official release calendar is slow. It allows me to explore everything that's been released so far that I haven't had the time/money to visit yet. Remember, those of us who live in this space everyday are not the typical players or DMs out there at-large. I would bet most groups playing right now are very casual in their play style and play rather intermittently as compared to those who this hobby is their No. 1 past time. I also have a concern that adding more character creation abilities like feats, traits, supernatural gifts, etc. as a core part for character creation is a very slippery slope inching toward power creep. More options are always good but having an entirely new category, like supernatural gifts, on top of your stats, racial abilities and class features starts to bother me to a point that I'm now playing a medieval Marvel Universe super hero game where everyone flies, has super human strength, is beautiful, muscle-y, and needs Thanos to even really threaten you at all. I don't play DnD for that vibe. I'm all for an agnostic Xanathar's II-type book and I like the addition of new subclasses, spells, magical items, classes and feats, but inherent abilities and powers...nah. I'll pass every time.
I wonder what the Piety system is like, it sounds so cool
One of the upcoming videos!
Theros looks really interesting, and I think a greek oddysey would be an interesting starting point for new players. I know people love Darksun, Greyhawk and all that but we already have lots of settings that are standard fantasy variants, I'm glad they're doing something new.
With the Supernatural Gifts, I might give the option to choose one of the racial feats available to that character's race, if any, to represent that they have been blessed to be a higher standard of that race than most. So give a wood elf access to wood elf magic at level one showing that they have been blessed with a deeper connection to their magic and nature than other wood elves. Other than that, I would either have everyone just choose a feat or have everyone take a normal supernatural gift
I don't have any gods in my world, but Supernatural Giftslook awesome. Especially that in my setting, just like in Theros, PHB races don't exist- the only available races are three kinds of humans that derive from different casts, arkens and gahaarans, my own 2 custom races. Thanks for the video!
That last point you made about expanding the piety system and supernatural gifts I can see being done in a Explore the Planes book
Pretty sure the non-setting specific subclasses in xanathar's guide are also available
I love the supernatural gifts.
Reflavors the barbarian's bear totem to represent a creature like the nemean lion
Nyx born seems really good for a twilight cleric from tce. Both thematically and mechanically making the person who can keep your party up and running harder to drop.
I really like this gifth options :P ( and piety progreccion)
I do not think 5e is becoming stale yet but i would love them to make more manuals not tied to other settings and lore.
In your home brew world would you include the "Hallow Ones" from EGtW as part of the Supernatural Gift options?
I love it. I will definitely include it in my games. Although I do run higher power games where the PC's can play as descendants of god-like entities. Now i want to definitely write flavorful text for the other feats to have as optional supernatural gifts as well.
On the topic of feats at first level: I like that idea but I will expand on it a bit. I run for my players the ability to tell me a feat they are training for. (limit 1 at a time) When they advance in a number of levels (sometimes 3 or more) I will have them earn it. The idea is that they can earn feats by practicing them and it just simply makes sense that way to me, in the same way having a 1st level feat makes sense because of backstory.
Just to note, its not just PHB, its also xanathars as forge and grave cleric are among the suggested options.
I’ll definitely end up using the system but it’s kind of funny that it’s basically a poor mans copy of the Odyssey of the Dragonlords Epic Path system. Though they fit so well together they would probably well in tandem
I feel like the Supernatural Gifts and Piety systems are distinctively something that fits into worlds with Strong divine influences. So personally I'm making a world with weak divine influence since the gods dispersed themselves into lesser forms several times over, so neither system would work. On the contrary, playing in Faerun or the world that my current DM has would be perfect for these systems because they have really strong divinity
I like these ideas, they're obviously trying to expand upon the rules, which is wonderful. I think UA gives away so many options to characters that they shouldn't be a need to feel stale. If you hold ONLY to in book content, then I see your point. But thats why UA is free. And yes, I will use the hell out of this in my home game.
I'm guessing the dice set will come out near the end of July when the physical book drops as well.
just started a homebrew world heavily influenced by gods and then theros releasend, I feel lucky
My friend is running a very Deity centric game so this will be amazing to add to that world.
Minotaurs on Theros are basically orcs
Satyrs can be seen as goblins for Theros, only not as completely despised
Tritons don't have hair, they have fins on Theros
Centaurs are pretty much the elves of Theros, well them, and the Tritons. Think of it as Centaurs being the wood elves and the Tritons being the high elves only with additional ego... And being crossbred with sea elves...
As an MtG, PJO and overall Mythology fan, I *adore* this book
So these are really just neat feats that can only be taken at level 1, although Anvilwrought and Nyxborn blur the line between feat and race.
More power? Yes.
More options? Yes.
Epic level play? Yes!
3AM upload on point! 10/10
Hair 9/10
Anvilwrought: 6 hour rest
Warforged: 5 hour rest
Reborn: 4 hour rest
Would like to see more of the race like powers like maybe you had dealings with devil's and you get hellish rebuke like tieflings. I like to think it's like an extra background feats
Supernatural gifts are an awesome addition to making a high magic setting! Now I have the theme song for Hercules the legendary journey stuck in my head (SyFy.com has their episodes btw)
Lmao Im glad I'm not the only one see this so early in the east coast morning
Go take the survey! Tell them to bring back the mystic!
I already give my players a free feat at level one, so I love this system being in the game.
I'd been going through the monster manual and core book monsters to grab the monster abilities into a list and then organising them into tiers to make them into sets of abilities to grant to players at zero level in my homebrew campaign setting. I may also play around with some of them using monk ki/sorcerer points as an alternative way of handling psionic wild talents like they had in Dark Sun 2nd ed.
So with all of these abilities you could stack so many resistances
WOC either makes super original content or copies Homebrew they find on the internet it's starting to get really noticable
These seem amazing. I will definitely look at using them in the future
Is it PHB human because variant humans with one of these would be dumb. Double feat at lv 1 wack
It just says human, nothing more. So I'd assume variant is fine
The other powers all better than most feats. So I don’t think tow powers I whack when you compare them
We need a Japan like book with Oni and Tiger races Shinobi and Samurai subclasses
There's a samurai fighter subclass and a Kensei monk subclass oni already exist and you could just reskin the leonin as a tiger
There are the digital Mythic Dice on Dndbeyond, so maybe once the physical book is more definitively getting released, they'll release a version of those? In regards to Supernatural Gifts, I like the clarification that they're intended for just a pure Theros world in this book because initially I was very concerned about how that would work with elves and such. My biggest issue with the Gifts though is it seems like it makes the players more powerful and yet as far as I can tell, there's no advice for DMs on how to scale appropriately
I wanna see the new monsters not gonna lie
But, I like these too
Forge cleric is listed as a domain so the xanathar book is allowed too.
Absolutely love your videos man! Really glad you delved into this book, it has such cool bits and pieces and these supernatural gifts sound really interesting. I'd love to play a Theros campaign or use this content in other games.
Some little suggestion for filming these though; maybe just try to to keep whatever you're reading in the middle of the screen because your face cam often obscures some of the text (face cam is good though). Probably less important as well but maybe have a more zoomed in screen capture? The current size makes the text hard to read if you don't watch on a massive screen.
Keep up the good work though, Ted!!!
Tiny gods I WISH I had the problem of running out of ideas of characters to play. I have so many different ideas, but we've been playing the same 2 campaigns for like 3 years at this point.
Read my book ‘Superhuman Training’ if you want to learn REAL supernatural powers.
So helpful! Thank you!
Supernatural gift for a "better" dragoborn-esque breath weapon :D
It would be a Leonin Bear, Tiger, Tiger Barbarian.
I like anything that gives players more choices to create their characters, so I'm all for feats and these gifts.
Still means the number of player choices at higher levels are sorely lacking in 5e.
Well content for higher levels is sorely lacking as well.
WoTC doesn't care about anything past level 15
One has to think that the popularity of Critical Role should change their minds. A lot of people wouldn't mind higher level play.
Of course some groups may have to pause a campaign for a while, but it still stands that Wizards of the Coast are ignoring easy money. An advanced version of 5e will make them a ton of money.
Supernatural Gifts...new area to work with and expand. Hope this do not turn into a supernatural gifts orgy.
Races
A diverse assortment of peoples dwell among the lands of Theros. Aside from humans, the races in the Player’s Handbook are unknown on Theros, unless they’re visiting from other worlds.
I always loves more stuff, so yes please for supernatural powers
to your point of having the base classes from the PHB and probably the rest of the races, multiple times, whenever it mentions the Forge and Grave domains, it says that you can find those in Xanathar's Guide, so I'm guessing that book is also available? or at least those two subclasses
This would be fun for a divine soul sorcerer
I want the Oracle domain be made official.
"this will be the day we're waiting for"
Oh hello, I’ve been waiting for this..
Theros Dice set is virtual only right now. Not sure if that will change.
aww I was hoping the returned would show up as a supernatural gift or just a way to play as one
I think the problem with having Returned as a playable option is simply that they're not whole people. They're the physical half of their former self with a few scraps of memory and some ingrained behavior patterns. A Returned isn't really a sapient undead such that you could roleplay as one, it's more of a beast-level intelligence that tries desperately to mimic its former, barely remembered life.
@@anix712 fair
If your not even in theros these could make god boons as rewards
I actually like the idea of the supernatural gifts especially like the Earth's vitality and I'm going to use this for my example so I would add the supernatural gifts but one thing I would do is as the player levels up or we figured out the reason he got this Supernatural gift or whatever the supernatural gift starts to get more powerful like Earth's vitality's what first abilities like as long as you are on the earth or something you heal faster or you have extra HP well as you get stronger you actually gain regenerative regeneration abilities while on the earth or maybe a skin as hard as Stone and eventually it gets so strong that you're able to manipulate the Earth like you can cause landslides cause lava the rise from the ground to attack enemies and etcetera but I'd be more like level 20 ability one that makes yo like a earth demigod or God of the Earth or basically every Druids worst nightmare
I hope someone from the DMs guild adapts piety to the the FR gods
I get the idea in iconoclast but I think Atheism (and anti-theism) in a world like theros should in my opinion be like a curse rather than a blessing.
In the end it is a curse, since when you die you actually do fade away and your soul gets destroyed, but Theros has always been about the impact that faith, and the lack of it, has on the world. Lack of faith in the gods decreases their powers and I my mind that is what iconoclast represents. You are so strong in your disbelief of the gods that you gain a small level of protection from them and their servants that grows as you yourself become more powerful
@@allenfortenberry9924 yeah than makes sense. However I would still make priests dislike them and possibly if they become too dangerous send Nyxborn monsters towards them it would just make sense as an option.
@@vasilistheocharis164 Fair enough, and people that have a high belief not liking the iconoclasts is a realistic thing, just like in base dnd if you have an orc or yuan-ti character, most npcs you meet shouldn't treat them the same because of their history
Most tables give free starting feats anyway
Personally, want to use the Leonid for my Tabaxi Barbarian build, but that would feel a little min/max maybe.
