Joyful and playful in the first movement, most sweet and soothing in the second, exciting in the third. I absolutely love this. Congrats on the rendition and many thanks for such a lovely concert.

The interplay between the voices in the second movement, and the plucked accompaniment - absolutely heavenly. You can see how much the player are enjoying themselves (including the bass player, who can have a rest and listen to them!)

Wonderful ! Antonio, in heaven now, must be very pleased ! He will go to his neighbor J.S. Bach and ask him : 'did you hear that? It is mine but it could have been yours too !'
Listening Guide adapted from Listen, Ninth Edition, by Joseph Kerman, page 115 First Movement (Allegro) The mandolins trade flashy melodies back and forth and often join together, especially at the approach of cadences. The opening ritornello (refrain) in this lively movement consists of several contrasting melodies, some of which return in later ritornellos. The first melody is a tuneful pair of closely related phrases (a and a'). Next comes a quick melodic phrase that is duplicated at a higher pitch, making a sequence (b). With (c) the music reaches a satisfying cadence, and it sounds as if the ritornello is finished -- but Vivaldi has a surprise. A new, undulating melody appears in the minor mode, played pianissimo (d): it is repeated, now in the major mode and forte (d'), to close the ritornello with a solid cadence. The melodies of the mandolins in the solo section are not taken from the ritornello melodies, but show off the instrument's capacities to play quick scales, repeated notes, and arpeggios. The second solo section also features an episode of repeated trills --difficult to play well on the plucked-string instrument. The accompaniment for the solo sections varies, but always reduces the orchestral presence. In solos 1 and 3, only the violins and violas play, with no basso continuo. In solo 2, the upper strings drop out and the basso continuo (cello) takes over. 00:05 Ritornello a 00:12 Ritornello a' 00:20 Ritornello b 00:30 Ritornello c 00:37 Ritornello d 00:45 Ritornello d' 00:51 Solo Mandolines 1 01:35 Ritornello 2 a c 01:49 Solo Mandolines 2 02:36 Ritornello 3 a d d' 02:58 Solo Mandolines 3 03:53 Ritornello 4 d' Second Movement (Andante) There is no ritornello form or basso continuo here, lending a hushed quality to the movement. Good sound balance, the mandolins hold their own here. THE best video if one wants to watch the dazzling fingering from minute 9, for that alone the views should be in the 2-500,000 range. :-)

Absolutely brilliant. However, I wonder if the usual super-slow tempo of the second movement is what Il Prete Rosso wanted. What if the beat were the quarter notes and not the eighths? In the solo parts flowing triplets then, legatissimo. I believe it is notated in 4/4, so the bar would be the musical entity, not the half-bar. Something like quarter = 45 (instead of eighths = 56 here). Hopefully, somebody will give it a try sometime.

Wonderful ! Antonio, in heaven now, must be very pleased ! He will go to his neighbor J.S. Bach and ask him : 'did you hear that? It is mine but it could have been yours too !'
Bach did adapt some of Vivaldi's works, such as his concerto for four violins.

the big lute-like instrument is a theorbo
