Brings a tear to the eye,🥲 finally the northern rail alive again bravo👏👏 KIWI RAIL TEAM 👏👏I'm going to keep an eye on the rest of your journey to Whangārei awesome AZ 👍
Ooh, so awesome to WATCH our KIWI TRAIN, very lovingly seeing the KIWIS NZ TRAIN, wishing YOU especially the TRAIN DRIVER and all the VERY BEST in all your work, BLESS YOU all.🙏👏👍♥️💖🥰🥰
Would be great. I took an intercity bus in Oct22 up to Whangarei and with the road being very twisty and turny it was pretty uncomfortable. Even if the train was even slower, I am sure it would be better on the comfort side for a start. Unfortunately it's been so long since there's been a regional service north of Auckland, that unlike yourself, I'd be surprised if anyone in the relevant local authorities, let alone the KR exec and this govt, even have the vision and idea to start a regional service up. It's been easily seen that for the Te Huia service, Wayne Brown and AT have been conspicuous by their ambivalence and negativity so it's doubtful if they would be supportive of a regional rail service up north. The best that can probably be hoped for is that GVR who are doing regular rail excursions to the Waikato and Central North island, add trips up north (I know that before the storms when the previous upgrade project was completed they were in talks with KR to do a charter). If they did and those trips were successful and showed good demand, who knows it might actually turn a light on in someone's head at KR/Local govt level, even if they started with a "weekender" service up from AKL on a Friday eve and back on a Sunday aft/eve.
Can Woodhill Forestry use this line to get logs up north instead of trucks along SH 16? This line goes through Makarau, Taupaki, Kaipara Flats, Hoteo and more, through some bush, hills and streams, a beautiful area. I've worked around there and met some great people out there. What about getting Marsden Point up and running?
Yeah. But I do think a train between Swanson and Helensville is needed. There are a lot of new housing at Kumeu and Huapai. I guess Helensville and Parakai are growing too.
With the pulp from Central North Island finishing, the PNGL needs to be extended back to Gisborne. It would make a very good infrastructure project, provide jobs over probably three or more years, and relieve SH2 of a lot of heavy trucks, for which the road is totally unsuitable. It would also feed traffic to Napier and beyond which it lost in 2012. The line Wairoa -Napier was rebuilt for log traffic, and this could resume quite quickly, as the worst damage is in the Esk Valley. It would be a major job, but would give good returns to the whole East Coast. As it is fresh produce is trucked from Gisborne to Christchurch, which could go all the way by rail if the Government makes the correct ferry choice and have rail-enabled ships.
Hopefully the re-established line up to Whangarei goes well freight wise, it would be a good choice. Maybe passenger service soon, certainly to Helensville commuters. Ultimately rail all the way North would be smart.
Saw a train going Mt eden direction through morning side station i was on the Swanson train going west ,Had a Diesel Loco up front and bunch of empty flat decks and the same sorta Loco at the back it was quiet long origin from way up north ? cause theres no where to make a train that long on the western line
@tomt9543 The lead Locomotives were built by CRRC Dalian between the years of 2010 and 2022, they only operate in the North Island of New Zealand and there are 73 of them The back 2 are DC Class Locomotives built between 1961 and 1967 as the DA class by General Motors Canada and rebuilt between 1977 and 1981 by Clyde engineering Australia
These fine locos are made in China. Surely you must know that nothing is made in New Zealand. Absolutely nothing.. We cant even make a teaspoon or a coffee cup.
Great to Rail heading North again. The speed here suggested it's low in order to stop quickly because of line defects or faults, or is there another reason? Will this line ever reach Kaiatia?
An EP van is a Plough van normally used on Ballast trains when dropping ballast, but in this situation was being used to carry people to inspect bridges
Do you remember when Helen Clark bought in a law banning the sale of spray can paint thinking it would stop graffiti,,,,,, as you can see, it hasnt changed a thing, only got worse. (just like all of Labours policies. )
The rolling stock looks appauling. Graffiti terrible. Iwas just amazaed at the very slow speed, watched most of it at 2x spped & still so slow. Why all the screeching, even on straight bits of track?
It does seem a bit silly to have a rail system in place not being used efficiently these days, get the trucks off the roads one loco could eliminate at least ten trucks off the highway long distance. Now that should make the greens a little happier.
@@matiungawharau are there still tracks to Okaihau? There is embankment further up towards the Mangamukas but I think there were no rails on it even in the 1970s. The tracks between Moerewa and Kawakawa were taken our a few years ago to turn it into a cycle track, so maybe AFFCO is the most it could practically go, though I'm not even sure if the tracks go that far now ... maybe only Otiria at the other end of town (where the junction to Okaihau is).
To answer my own question, it looks as if the Okaihau tracks now don't even exist a few hundred metres from the Otiria junction e.g. on Ngawhiu Rd near the intersection with Ngapipito Rd you can see the embankment but no tracks. It looks like they maybe still exist in both branches at Wahamiti Lane (there are two tracks) but by the new bridge on Pokapu Rd (630m from Wahamiti Lane) there is northing but remains of embankment. Apparently it was closed in November 1987, 37 years ago.

Now we need the Napier - Gisborne railway line reinstated, anyways great video!
Not gonna happen unfortunately
I fully agree. Get a lot of the trucks off the road.
Train from Whangarei to Auckland is mostly because of cement from Portland from what I have seen.
With Kiwirail announcement to release all of their Napier based loco drivers there won't even be a Napier-Wairoa service.
@@Paul-ik8fm there is general freight and logs too

It would be awesome if they did that I'd take my kids

Would really like to see them run up to Kauri again. It was always a nice
little break to the day when they rumbled past.
Now to lower the tracks in the Swanson tunnel ,electrify it out to Kumeu and Helensville FFS the place with the biggest urban sprawl
Some stupid idiot decided to scrap the trains that did run to Helensville a few years ago. They could have used them between Swanson and Helensville.
Sorry, the best that Simon Bridges can do is to make everything worse.
@@irvinetam3454 This is not a blame game, it is a question..
I rode out to helensville in 2009. Took too long. Agree a line out there is important but would need a new route

Thank goodness for the northern line, well done Kiwirail, 😊😊😊.
There is no northern line mate, shit job kiwi rail get it done. It’s been 5 years
After all the problems with the Brenderwyns good tho have some redundancy
Wow I'd buy a passenger ticket for the experience to travel on the new Northland line.
Northland is such a beautiful place with so much potential. How is it our poorest region?
And they should get on to that port at Marsden point ASAP.

If only we saw passenger action on the line as well :/
Maybe one every tour hours in each direction between Auckland and Whangārei?
The line would need big upgrades and realignments to be able to compete with coaches now.
Nice DMs

Love the locomotives! Since I’m from the states and know nothing about Kiwi railroads, who built those loco’s, and how old are the two models shown?

How come it makes so much noise? Looks like some wheel alignment is far overdue😂. Or maybe rail alignment???
This is because the tracks are old, out of alignment and dilapidated. Even at this caterpillar speed, the tracks are still rupturing.
Good show. Now back to the future???
That rail doesn’t get past welsford, north midland tracks are far from bing done in the next 10 years
Fresh coat of paint would help
It's quicker to walk to whangarei
My God,,, I bet China and its 400kmph train system will be shaking at the knees when they see this lot.

Great video. Such a shame how many Kiwirail assets are covered in graffiti.
What is the wagon at the back for?
For the local idiots to cover in Graffiti?
I was askng the same question.... But whatever it is for, it must be dam heavy if it nees this many engines to pull it.

It is not wheel alignment required but rail alignment - have you looked at them - as crooked as a sheep's hind legs!
I felt sure this line was a gonner after the 2023 election, but I'm happy to be wrong
look more like a gypsy train awson neways northland have rail
