WandaVision is a massive trauma study with every couple of episodes exploring a different stages of grief/loss:
    Episodes 1&2: Denial
    Episodes 3&4: Anger
    Episodes 5&6: Bargaining
    Episodes 7&8: Depression
    Episode 9: Acceptance
Wanda in this series is kind of an unintentional villain. She is so stricken by all of her grief and loss that she unconsciously hurt those around her cause she was drowning and there was barely anyone to bring her back up. The only one who really tried was Monica who empathized with her.
Wanda saying sorry to everyone in that village won't change a thing it's a mute point. They'll never see her viewpoint cause they have no idea what she went through again the only one close who "lost everything" was Monica.
Agatha needed to be imprisoned because she is the reason that Wanda's delusion continued for so long. Remember it was "Agatha all along." Agatha only lives by sucking the life out of others so Wanda imprisoned her so she cannot do that to anyone else.
Wanda never knew her powers, the only one that did or had an inkling was Agatha who told her about the Darkhold which prophesized that the Scarlet Witch is more powerful than the Sorcerer Supreme. So Wanda is using the book to learn, which will have some interesting consequences.
Oh and don't forget in a previous episode, Monica did say "those kids are real."
Again fun ride you were on, can't wait for you to tackle the next MCU series!

Kidnapping and torturing a whole town for weeks on end really requires more than an apology anyway, don't you think? The morality in the show is pretty retarded. Everything that happened started from her subconscious reaction to her pain and grief. She didn't consciously choose to entrap and entire town and it's people. Her conscious mind was in denial of those things when it was confronted at different times, until Agatha's desire for the Scarlet Witch's powers broke that. It's easy to say as an outsider looking in that the townspeople would accept her apology, but after all that time inside, they are thinking like you, that she DID know exactly what she was doing the entire time. No amount of apologizing will make up for that. She's already a villain in their eyes.
As another example, you should watch The Forbidden Planet, as it's another case of what can happen if the unconscious mind is given limitless power in the real world.

    • @richardyoung3462
      @richardyoung3462 Месяц назад +3

Yes and no. She might have begun to realize that she is causing things to happen, but even in this episode, she's in denial about her being the cause of it all until her attempt to "silence" the townspeople actually begins to choke them to death and she sees the immediate result of her reaction. That's when she fully realizes the extent of what she has been, and is, doing to the area.

    • @afrancis1582

I think people fail to realise just how damaged Wanda has become. At this point she does not want to hurt anyone. Her mind is so fractured that even when she understands it is her doing, she is still hiding in a fantasy that everyone is happy in her made up sitcom world.
If you want to simplify it as two dimensional heroes and villains, then her actions are those of a villain. But looking at it like that is to deny the depth of the character they have created.
It’s the complexity and moral ambiguity that makes WandaVision work so well. And Elizabeth Olsen’s acting, obviously.

Human ethics and morality isn't equipped to deal with the questions of ethical treatment of superpowered individuals. It's not like we can just lock Agatha in a cell on Block D. In the comics, Dr. Strange put The Raft in the Negative Zone, but in the MCU, The Raft is in the Hudson River (or New York Harbor). Agatha is 300-something years old; spending a couple of years as Agnes is a walk in the park AND keeps her out of mischief.

"how do we feel about this?" I think one of the most important factors to keep in mind is that she didn't know she was imprisoning a town when she created the Hex, and as soon as Agatha showed her what was actually happening, she started taking the Hex down. We don't have to call her a hero, but we definitely can't say she's 100% villain. Also, I completely understand why she didn't face the townfolk and apologize directly to them, she knew that anything she could say would be insufficient and that they would rather she just go far away.

    • @reactswithjax

She didn't know, all she knew is that this thing happened after visiting the place Vision had bought for the 2 of them, feeling immense grief and sorrow, and then her powers burst out of her and she was happy with Vision. She believed she was making everyone else happy too after seeing them be not so happy (when she drove into Westview and we saw everyone kinda gloom and gray) it wasn't until Agatha cut their strings and started telling Wanda how much pain they are in that she realized what she was doing and then did try to destroy her world to let everyone escape, but as we saw it was hurting and killing her kids and Vision and had to stop
Overall like Rambo said, Wanda wasn't a victimizer

Even if we pretend that it was an involuntary "Sneeze" that caused everything, AND screwed with her head to make her accept it, with Agatha "Nudging" her to stay locked into the Fantasy...
Well, that's just removing any Agency, and providing excuses for Shitty behaviour. At the least you can say there were multiple opportunities (Commercials etc) that she chose to ignore. It isn't even like she "Gave up this Mad Idea", freed everyone, apologized and went off to live happily ever after, instead she's just leaving to continue her "Mad Idea" in Private where she won't be bothered by useless Mortals.
At this point she's just a Villain, 100%.

@@lokithecat7225 It's a psychotic break. When that happens, the person is not conscious of reality and in her case, with her powers, she can actually change reality to what she wants to believe it is. And before that, she didn't even know she had that capability, so she was not consciously aware. This doesn't make it OK, but it was not intentional. We don't have to pretend any of that. She needs psychological help, for sure, but she went away from people so she wouldn't be in danger of roping other people in, by accident like before, while she figures out her power. She didn't leave to create another Hex or "continue her Mad Idea," like you said.

Opening the handcuffs with the safety pin is a continuation of his pursuit of magic. We saw him learning card tricks in Ant Man and the Wasp, and he did slight of hand to "produce" his business card when he met Monica. Agatha wasn't really teaching Wanda anything, she was confused and thought that Wanda was doing all of this on her own volition, but didn't realize that Wanda herself had no idea she was a witch, much less the Scarlet Witch. When Agatha brought up the runes originally, she said it in a condescending way of like "how could you make this mistake, you know it works like this" when Wanda knew none of it. Basically Wanda knew she had powers, she just didn't know her role was so significant.

Wanda created life from nothing, which Agatha says in the beginning of the previous episode. The boys are real, which Monica said in episode 5. The ability to spontaneously create life is what makes her so powerful, and why Agatha was so envious.

Also, in the comics, Agatha was Wanda's mentor in learning true magic as her mutant power was altering probability fields. In the comics, this moniker was an accusation shouted by one of the angry mob who witnessed her burned a farmhouse owned by a man who tried to take advantage of her. When another retcon was made on the origin of the Maximoff twins, it was revealed that their biological mother, Natalya Maximoff, and a mentioned grandfather were the first to use the title (Scarlet Witch/Warlock) before her. It came into her mind when she first realized she had powers (This is from Scarlet Witch 2017 comic series). It implies that it is an instinctual title that is inherited by magic wielders of the same bloodline who possess the same hue/color of magical energy (most of the cases), just like:
      *Emerald Warlock
      *Señor Violetta

Wanda's actions are driven by intense grief. Obviously, she currently does not have the mental stability to consider what she is doing to the town's people. Wanda's story will continue in the next Doctor Strange movie. Also, Wanda is born a mutant with witch powers. Her interaction with the Mind Stone ended up enhancing her abilities. As far as Agnes is concerned, she did try to kill Wanda, so I have no problem with what Wanda did to her.

I really enjoyed your reaction, even if we disagree on some things about Wanda.
When my brother let me read his Marvel Comic collection in the 1970s The Vision quickly became my favorite character. I think they've done a great job portraying him in the MCU as the kind, thoughtful, caring character he is. Like you I immediately recognized that, even with his demise rushing towards him, he said his good-bye in a way that would prepare Wanda to maybe meet White Vision in the future. He truly is worthy to wield Mjolnir.
For Wanda, she did not know what she was doing when she created the hex in the pit of her grief. She thought the people of Westview were being taken care of and was unaware that they experienced her pain and nightmares. Once she recognized what was really going on she began taking steps to make things right, even at the cost of her family. As far as how she handled Agnes/Agatha, how exactly do you punish someone with magical powers? Wanda's solution may not be ideal, but it beats how Wanda herself was treated when she was a prisoner on the Raft in Captain America: Civil War (IIRC she was behind bars, in a straight jacket, and gagged). If her solution keeps Agatha essentially asleep (sleepwalking as Agnes), it could be considered pretty lenient.

Loki killed a lot of people in The Avengers, but a lot of people like him, like Thanos. It doesn't matter if the character is a villain or a hero, if the character is well written and especially if the actor gives his best performance. In any case, your reaction was good, Jax. We are looking forward to the next projects.

    Hey Jax!😊
My feelings are a little more understanding of Wanda’s situation.
You said that you understood that Wanda wasn’t purposely doing the things she did, but everything else you said didn’t seem like it.
I’m not condoning anything Wanda (accidental or otherwise) did, but you have to remember her backstory and that Hayworth manipulated the situation for Wanda to do these things. While Agatha manipulated Wanda to stay in this villainous state. Both Hayworth and Harkness recognized her grief and played on it. Arguably, if those two hadn’t done what they did, Wanda would have never done what she did or at least wouldn’t have gone as far as she did.

I'm not sure how much Wanda intended to make the town, at first-- it seems initially to have been an explosion of emotion, not fully intentional-- but it's clear that by the time SWORD started trying to get in that she was fully aware of the fact that she had created and was determined to retain her little world.
However, what she did NOT know, or understand, was made clear when the angry crowd surrounded her in this episode. She had no idea she was causing pain to the other people in Westview; she assumed (irrationally, as a state of deep psychological denial, but still) that they were as happy in this cozy, safe, sitcom world as she was. She's visibly horrified when she learns the truth and at once wants to let them go. She balks when she realizes Vision and the twins will vanish along with the Hex, and then she has to deal with Agatha, but as soon as she has time to think she follows through and shuts it down, despite what it will mean for Vision and the twins.
All of this means that in the end, I'm a lot more sympathetic to her than Jax was. I'm sorry for Wanda, and for the guilt now added to her overpowering grief-- guilt she should feel, but still-- rather than angry at her.

We have to remember that when Wanda first transformed Westview and its inhabitants, she didn't do so consciously or intentionally. Her powers simply activated in a moment of despair. Her subsconscious desires shaped the reality inside the hex, but even she didn't know exactly what had happened at first. She became aware of it later, although she did continue the charade after realizing what was going on.

Well, when someone has a psychotic break, you can't just tell them, "What you believe isn't real," and have that sink in immediately. They aren't going to believe you and be in denial, even if what they believe is happening is not what they want to be happening. In this case, she wanted to believe the lie. Plus, in Wanda's case, she didn't even know she was capable of doing all this. So, someone saying that you're changing the world and hurting people, there's no way you'd just believe that. "Surely someone else must've done something 'cause I can't even do anything LIKE that." Then you add on that she wants it to be real, that's gonna take some time and convincing. Agatha was trying to shake her out of her fantasy and eventually it worked, but her subtle attempts weren't doing the trick, so she had to directly intervene and explain the situation to Wanda. Granted, it was for selfish reasons, but she did end up helping the townspeople get free.

She is the most child like of the Avengers with an incredible font of power suffering through some extremely dark loneliness and grief with no one to help her. She craved for the pain to end and her powers took over, by the time she realized what she had truly done by accident, she had so much to lose and was hesitant to give it up, that's when Agatha revealed herself. She was never a villain to me here. She's a child alone and afraid who never had a good choice to make.

But he is still out there with all of the original Vision’s memories. It’s just a matter of where he shows up next. Will he reach out to Wanda? Maybe try to connect with Pepper, being that he still felt tied to Tony because of his Jarvis roots? We don’t know, but he is out there. Just an FYI, White Vision has an arc in the comics. I won’t spoil it for you, but it’s a good story, and could be relevant to some things Marvel is already doing in the MCU. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!

That was a Skrull, not a Kree lol. This series was a real study on trauma. Wanda didn't intentionally create everything but it more or less came from her intense grief. But she did become the villain by keeping all the people hostage. When she's reading the DarkHold she's doing it in her astral form but what makes it really amazing is that she's making tea while doing it. Doctor Strange would be laying down when he did it so it's letting you know what Agatha said about she is more powerful than the Sorcerer Supreme. Doctor Strange was actually supposed to show up in this series and the commercials were supposed to be his way of helping her but they scrapped it. This was the first of he Disney+ series and I enjoyed it. Also - Monica is also in the comics and doesn't lose her powers.

I was confused why the show treated Hayward like a villain when he was the only major character who actually showed concern for the people of Westview. Sure he also wanted to activate Vision but that too was supposed to be a way to protect people, it was literally part of his job to develop weapons top decent the people of earth from threats. Monica, Jimmy and Darcy turned into Wanda cheerleaders who didn't seem to give a crap about the town at all, it was all Wanda this Wanda that. Of course Hayward wanted to kick them off base, who wouldn't? They were actively defending Wanda who had taken an entire town hostage, they knew that for a fact at that point.
And Monica acting like only she understands what it means to lose a loved one when the half of the world that wasn't blipped lost loved ones for years while much of the half who was blipped lost someone in the years they missed just like Monica did. After the blip the majority of the world should have experienced trauma through loss.

What do you do when someone this powerful breaks like any person would understand the circumstances? What do you do when the harm caused is unintentional and their power makes containment almost impossible. This is repeatedly an issue with Mutants. And the Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver were mutants in the comics and were Magneto's children.

  • @jamesweible5357

The best part of the writing for this show is the grey area of mental instability. You can't fully blame someone who has detached from reality, that's why we have the insanity defense. At the same time we see wanda being told what she's doing multiple times, and she refuses to accept it and basically breaks her own mind over and over to not have to face her pain. It brings a lot of realism to a world of unrealistic things that we all tend to relate to, but also can't at the same time, so it confuses our emotions. It's really clever writing and you leave not really feeling sure in your feelings, which sparks debate and discussion, which marks it as a great story.
Here's a for instance. My father abused us all so badly that I blocked out the memory of it. 99.9% of my childhood is blank and what I can remember is super fuzzy. That has caused my mind to forgot bad things that happen most of the time. That CAN be good, as I can more easily let them go, but it's also bad as I can traumatize myself over and over by repeating the same mistakes. It's also resulted in memory issues I still have in my 40s. So I can fully relate to altered mental states due to trauma. Still...I think wanda was let off easy here, at the least I would have liked to see Dr. Strange come and tell her she has to see a grief therapist.

It is an interesting thought experiment, trying to figure out what to do with someone like Agatha. But as a starter, until you DO come up with a well thought out, fully considered solution, stashing her away as Agnes isn't an awful way to buy yourself the time needed to have the discussion. You can't just let her roam around. And all of that applies to Wanda, too. At this point (the conclusion of this story) in the MCU, Wanda is effectively a god, even moreso than are Thor and Loki. She's on par with Odin as far as power goes, she just doesn't have thousands of years of trial and error to have gained any wisdom on how to wield power morally.
This show does live in the grey area. You're spot on. However you feel about Wanda at this point is valid and easy to justify.

Of all the things Wanda has done, I'm fine with the spell on Agatha (Other than also wanting her to be free in the MCU just for feelings of her being such a great character). It's really just an imprisonment. We can say Wandas not the police or court system so can't make that call, but we also can't make Agatha go to court and can't keep her in a prison cell. We can say let Dr Strange take care of it, but besides the fact she needs to be taken care of now, it would also be Strange being Judge, and Jury, and Executioner. And in this world Super Heros are regularly making judge jury and executioner calls. Thor to Thanos, Stark to Obediah Stane, the list can go on and on. With many of them being literal executioner, rather than jailer.

"No. More. Mutants..." With that one sentence she wiped out thousands and thousands of mutants. Most "just" lost their powers, but some whose body was adapted to their powers died when those powers were taken away. The Scarlet Witch killed many that day. And yes, she could have beaten Thanos, because Wanda re-writes reality itself.

And she won't be torturing her because the Hex is gone in the end so she won't have her nightmares. She is just in character aka noisy neighbour. Given the scene where she has killed her mum and others, probably more still present day, this is the besy way to prevent anymore disaster.
And Wanda didn't even know these people were having nightmares and is being tortured, its only at the end she found out.

Throughout the MCU, all the characters that have experienced mind control (Hawkeye, Erik Selvig) have all suffered as a result. Eric had a complete mental breakdown. I guess my solution would be to place her in a jail with runes around her so that her magic doesn't work.

An awesome conclusion to a brilliant show. Wanda is supposed to be a "Grey Area" kind of character, and that's one of the reasons I love her. Being smokin' hot and one of the most powerful beings in the Universe doesn't hurt either.😍

Vision vs Vision is definitely my favorite battle haha. I remember coming away from that being so impressed that it was fought and won with words in the way it was.

I smiled and said, "That's SO Vision." He was one of my favorite comic characters when I was a kid.

A lot of people watch this show and don't seem to notice that Wanda has become a villain again (not surprisingly, many are feminists, or the same kind of people who watched Black Panther and thought that Killmonger was making some good points)... and then they are surprised/disappointed by Wanda's next appearance in the MCU. I don't think you will be.

Helicopters circling around are a swat team looking for Lamby.

I could be wrong but it is most likely that after the hex went down, Agatha went back to normal and was only doing it to be able to have a proper goodbye to her "family"
