The death toll of the Great Leap Forward is widely unknown. China’s population under Mao went from five hundred and fifty million to nine hundred million in twenty years. 60 million *citation needed*. Let's turn things around. When it comes to the American revolution do you complain about the number of redcoats who were killed by George Washington's men? Do you believe the parliamentary system is wrong because during the English revolution hundreds of thousands died in the conflict? The French revolution was a disaster though, didn't work like at all. But then they didn't really come out on top. they just put things back to exactly how it started. Might have helped in Vietnam, sure. But it's not like the Chinese were fighting a crap ton of wars with the Capitalists (you know... cold war and all) and the starvation of up to 60 million people was certainly caused in large part due to the radical reforms Mao Zedong tried to pull off to emulate the "success" of the Soviet Union's 5 year plan, which resulted in mass famine and a heavily declining life expectancy (If you look at a graph or chart you'll see that it just tanks, down below some of the poorest countries in the world). Also, on the economic point of Mao leaving China on the precipice of economic growth is totally wrong. China started to grow because Mao died and Deng Xiao Ping took over and implemented economics reforms.

I dont know where you take this number but ending cycle famine and almost doubling life expetancy is a pretty great thing
Of course you don't.
I don’t like Portillo, the Torys are shite...I’m on the left...but fucking hell Dianne read a book, you know with words. History is pretty clear Mao was a fucking disaster for untold millions. “Yeah but he made a great peach cobbler “ is akin to hitlers vegetarian cook book balancing out the Holocaust, or Stalin’s “101 ways to improve project management” cancelling the Gulags..... fuck no...
@@trapezeoidthreelobed7683 Well for racist bigots like you who don't like seeing the Chinese people do well then of course you will hate Mao. It's all good. Just keep your filthy hands off Taiwan or else we come after you and make you pay for those millions of dead during his time in charge. YES THAT'S RIGHT we blame the West for it all.
@@tianwong1746 you are Western though lmao
“We” 🤣🤣🤣
Stop pretending you aren’t a paid Commie shill who created tour account one month ago
This was aired 17 years ago and she is still an MP
Diane Abbott “WE ARE ALL EQUAL BUT SOME OF US ARE MORE EQUAL THAN OTHERS “
❤ Animal Farm - my favourite book! 📖
She was having the discussion with her son.... the same son who assaulted 10 different hospital workers on 6 separate occasions, exposed himself to multiple NHS staff, caused racially aggrevated criminal damage and all while highnon meth which he had delivered to Diane's £1.2m home. Diane is the gift that keeps on giving
Clearly she didn’t teach her son good manners.
Are you talking about the same son that attended an elite fee paying school while his mother was trying to close down grammar schools from the education system?
That moment when you go into an interview where everyone present already knows you are the dumbest in the room and then you proceed to profoundly confirm those expectations whilst all the while having a smirk on your face that says I am so smart. What an absolute embarrassment, she should be utterly ashamed of herself.
When I need a good laugh, I always turn to Diane Abbot 😂
Deng Xiaoping is responsible for the Chinese economic success, not Mao.
Deng is responsible for huge inequality and top-down social control authoritarianism China today. Also, the economy, the foundations of Chinese industry was laid by Mao’s era.Mao is a real hero and always be respected by Chinese average especially the poor
Imagine a Tory said: Hitler did more good than harm.....
I can imagine Boris saying this 🤣
@@beardtrick haha True!!
Comparing Mao to Hitler is absurd. One of them increased the life expectancy of their population from 33 to 65. The other mass murdered jews and plunged an entire continent into total war for no benefits and only harm. Whatever way you look at it Mao improved his country, what existed before him was considerably worse. People's life expectancy does not go up when their lives are getting worse, it goes up when their lives are getting better.
Bonkers, absolutely bonkers!!
I was watching a series of Onion News bits then this came up, you couldn't write it 🤣
1:40
She’s smiling but she’s doesn’t get they are laughing at her.
She is ridiculous!!!
Thankyou for this video, it cheers me up knowing I’m not the stupidest person! 😆
This woman is in a position of power. Let that sink in.
And this women is Labour's Shadow Home Secretary!!!!!!! Unbelievable
Well I'm going to go scream into the void now.
Hahaha
I love the hilarious lack of space that Mike Portillo is affording her on the sofa.
aren't they both pretty uncomfortable tho ? it looks silly./
The BBC said she is "a political trailblazer". If this is the best that UK politics has to offer...we are in deep trouble
She’s a gift that keeps giving
Poor thing. Not very bright.
She is supposed to have a degree from Cambridge ? How did that happen ? There are rumours are they correct ? Surely not ? I ve no idea .
Tokenism
Affirmative action
I met Portillo once, he was about as nice a man as you could ask for.
Doesn't stop him BEING a racist bigot
No one’s mentioning how he’s sat so close to her?
Cannot stand Abbot's voice....
She was asked quite clearly and directly why the prospect of a person wearing a Mao t-shirt would cause less public outcry than an SS uniform. She stated correctly that some people would consider that Mao overall did more good than harm, which-however controversial the view may be to some-is a position absolutely impossible to hold in relation to the Nazi regime.
She was absolutely right and explained the reasoning without defending Mao or endorsing the viewpoint herself. Anyone who thinks or suggests otherwise is politically illiterate and should do society a favour by stepping away from the discourse until they can find any semblance of nuance or critical thinking ability.
Mao increased the life expectancy of their population from 33 to 65. Whatever way you look at it Mao improved his country, what existed before him was considerably worse. People's life expectancy does not go up when their lives are getting worse, it goes up when their lives are getting better.
40 million dead but you know it was worth it.
Why is Portillo sitting right on top of her??? Very odd.
Dear old Michael Portillo is very gracious in the company he keeps whilst in Diane Abbot’s company.
He somehow manages to just appear to laugh with her, rather than at her.
I think the answer to the original question, is that its difficult to criticise someone for wearing a Mao t-shirt because he is still celebrated and idolised by the largest populated, until a few days ago, country in the world. In some ways he is the most popular leader ever.
To be fair, at least she's being honest.
A history student from Cambridge as well- a genuinely terrifying opinion she has there
This woman is seriously misguided. It wouldn't matter ordinarily as you get a lot of ignoramuses but she's a politician!
As soon as she said "I suppose" I thought "this ought to be good"
Lol Andrew Neil's face at the end as he just realised how dark the conversation had turned...
Also, on the economic point of Mao leaving China on the precipice of economic growth is totally wrong.
China started to grow because Mao died and Deng Xiao Ping took over and implemented economics reforms.
I think at 1:35 Diane has a quick pluck on her cello.....
Brilliant
"I was just putting the case for Mao"
- Why?
Why? Because she has every right to.

' Mao did more good then harm ' One of the most staggering statements ever.
I wonder why this 7 year old video has suddenly appeared in my feed? (Checks news reports). Oh yes, that will be it.
With Abbott's logic, Hitler lead his country to the great post-war success, as did Mao's defeat of Japan, lead to Japan's great post-war economic explosion.
Why is the public paying this persons wages when obviously is lacking.
The hypocrisy was the worst thing.
Conveniently ignores the 'Great Leap Forward'
And she was the most sane out of the labour party….🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
People will believe what they want to believe and I can’t be bothered anymore to try and change their minds.
Funny how when you Google 'Diane Abbott Ma....' nothing comes up. It's as if the slate has been wiped.
I love how Portilo takes up 3/4 of the sofa like a boss 😂
bigbad123321: He staked his claim before Blabalot overwhelmed him...
And to think that today, the acting Tory leader (ex prime minister) referred to her in the House of Commons as a “trailblazer”. How on earth she has become mother of the house for this alone is beyond me! We know why though really… ticks a box!
The potential home secretary (HOME SECRETARY!!!!!!!!) talks up Mao. Please tell me why anyone would consider voting Labour, when THIS is what your going to get?
When former Chinese premier Deng Xiaoping died, former Conservative PM Edward Heath remarked that he’d been China’s greatest leader. He said Deng’s famously crushing the protests in Tiananmen Square was of no consequence compared to his achievement in being the first to successfully feeding the entire Chinese nation. I guess it depends on your perspective - under the tank tracks, starving in a village, enjoying your retirement from politics sailing your yacht ... being an apologist is by definition, rather fraught, but it’s certainly true that the Communist dictators have had better press than the fascists.
''WHAT!?''
My reaction to anything Labourites & left wingers come out with. All of it is utter nonsense & lies.
why are they laughing, what she is saying is disgraceful, putting the case for mao.lost for words, how did she get into a position of power.
The way she is so blase' about 60 million deaths, like what ever.
it's because it isn't real, it's a made up figure anyway

Shadow Home Secretary Abbott
A bilge pump.
Remember Michael, numbers are not Abbotts strong point. She really inhabits a parallel universe 😂
As a socialist, I find this reprehensible. I can't tell if this is out of malice or sheer stupidity but this is legit like saying 'Hitler led his country out of the great depression and did his best to protect them from Stalin'
youre are a hitlero-trotskyite if you think mao is even on the same morally evil wavelength as hitler
I really miss This Week
Mao doubled life expectancy of Chinese people, created superpower country with atomic and space program.
Led the country from feudalism straight to mass starvation
Don't worry about the starvation, however many you think he starved is how many Western anthropoids we will starve after we crush the West.
I was going to put in a witty statement but Diane Abbot satirized herself so perfectly I don’t think I’ll bother…
Mao enslaved an entire nation 😂
He was pure evil so it's no wonder Diane finds a lot in common with him.
The gift that keeps on giving
"He helped to defeat the japanese"
The PLA were in two battles. In tiny numbers.
Has she ever visited China to see the marvellous work Mao did for the people? 😵
Dianne Abbott was sitting there wondering when Disney is going to call offering her the part of Jabba the Hutt in the Star Wars remake!
Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the brains of the Labour party.
Think the daft woman unwittingly made the case for feudalism, as I don't think that resulted in the mass murderer of 60 million people? Regardless, Mao's manmade famine would have definitely done her some good, that's the only tenable case she could have made for his tyranny.
Nice one Diane. Only you could say that. And you still get votes. What a crazy world.
Labour at it's best
That was spectacular
Diane Abbot being Diane Abbot
Diane Abbott - vote labour and she could be the home sectetary, responsible for our nations security, how pathetic does that sound.
“Yeah Fred West made have been a demented serial killer but he could lay a mean patio”
" ... Mao did more good than harm ... " Just let that phrase ring round your head for a while. Then tell us all how Diane Abbott survives as a politician, even to this day.
