      Mao Zedong spent several decades waging a guerrilla war against warlords, hereditary land dynasties, and bourgeoisie nationalists. He forged an alliance with his sworn enemies the KMT so that they could join forces and defeat the Japanese fascists which he spent nearly a decade fighting against. Once in power he and the Communists unites all of China. He then supports the New Marriage Law which gave full equal legal equality to all of China's 300 million women. There is no single person in all of human history who has done more for women's rights than Mao Zedong. But it does't stop there, the Chinese communists then free the Norsu people from slavery, making the Mao Zedong and the Chinese Communists some of world history's greatest slavery abolitionists. Reforms in China under Mao were such a success that the life expectancy kept continuously rising under him until by the time of his death the average Chinese person's life expectancy had nearly doubled. He saved 600 million people from a premature death. Mao and the Chinese Communists kicked foreign colonial occupiers out of China, defended Korea from the USA and UK, and supported various anti-colonial freedom fighters across the globe.

      +Matt Florence In reality the communists barely did anything against the Japanese. The communists avoided war simply because they wanted the nationalists to become weaker so they could take over China. China was already a united country before Mao. Why do you have a problem with European colonialism but not with Han Chinese colonizing other people's lands like in Tibet and Xinjiang? The ''rise'' of communist China is laughable compared to the rise of Japan. China only became succesful and wealthy when they abandonded socialist policies.

      She was right, I am only going into minor detail though. He promoted women’s rights, China was unified, and life expectancy became much higher, land reform, China gained the platform to become a great power. Of course Mao did have his failures such as the great leap forward famine which he could not prevent. It lead to economic recession, it was a natural disaster the famine. Mao gave up meat and eggs also did many leading officials. Compare this to Winston Churchill’s reaction Bengal famine of 1943 in British controlled India. He asked “if food is so scarce why hasn’t Gandhi died yet?” He also blamed the Indians for the famine itself claiming they have been starving because they have been “breeding like rabbits” Churchill showed complete disrespect and disregard to the victims of the famine, yet nobody called Churchill a monster. The death toll of the Great Leap Forward is widely unknown. China’s population under Mao went from five hundred and fifty million to nine hundred million in twenty years. This was due to increase in life expectancy and a high birth rate. Mao is one of them historical figures who is always blamed for being a mass murder and for creating the biggest overpopulation problem the world as ever seen, very odd. The Cultural Revolution which was good for the proletarians and allowed people to go to school. 700% increase in school attendance. A decentralisation of power took place as well, power of the bureaucrats was weakened and the villagers and workers had far more control over the running of the economy in their villages than they previously had. Industrial production and farming went up. This was the so called “wasted years”. Diane Abbott was right. China’s life expectancy was below the world average early on and then surpassed the world average during the Cultural Revolution and that is a great achievement nobody should forget.

      Cecil123 I'm a social worker ( albeit a male one, which is a relatively rare thing), and I certainly don't speak with anything like that kind of tone.i wouldn't dare. I am a Socialist party member who believes that the ' Hippopotabbot' is a total disgrace, both to UK politics and to herself. She is an undoubted racist who should have been instantly dismissed from the Labour party years ago.By the way, the Labour party will NOT let the Socialist party officially affiliate itself with it - that's how left wing the Labour party actually is , ie not bloody much.
      You can't call yourself left wing if you sent your kids to private school (Hipocrite- Hippopotabbot) , or hardly ever left your Islington chattering class coffee mornings , the entire time you were a back - bench MP (Corbyn). Sadly, Labour has to rely too much on the naivety and depth- less knowledge of under 25 s to make any impact at all. Hey, callow Millennials !, Take a look at the S Party if you really believe in tackling the excesses of capitalism.

    • @The10000league
      @The10000league 8 лет назад +6

      60 million *citation needed*.
      Let's turn things around. When it comes to the American revolution do you complain about the number of redcoats who were killed by George Washington's men? Do you complain about the French revolution being a disaster because the republicans killed a few aristocrats? Do you believe the parliamentary system is wrong because during the English revolution hundreds of thousands died in the conflict? Don;t get me wrong I think your 60 million statistic you pulled out of thin air (or from Frank Dikotter) is ridiculous but you need to understand that revolution isn't a dinner party. Mao Zedong and the Communists fought against nearly all the strongest empires of their time and somehow came uot on top. That doesn't come without a price

      The French revolution was a disaster though, didn't work like at all. The French literally went from one monarch, made a republic, went under another monarch, lost, and finally went back to the monarchy they wanted to rid themselves of in the first place with the Concert of Europe.
      Except Mao *Didn't* fight the Japanese, he hid in a fucking cave while the nationalists did and then came out and took down the weakened nationalists after the war. I guess the Korean war? But then they didn't really come out on top. they just put things back to exactly how it started. Might have helped in Vietnam, sure. But it's not like the Chinese were fighting a crap ton of wars with the Capitalists (you know... cold war and all) and the starvation of up to 60 million people was certainly caused in large part due to the radical reforms Mao Zedong tried to pull off to emulate the "success" of the Soviet Union's 5 year plan, which resulted in mass famine and a heavily declining life expectancy (If you look at a graph or chart you'll see that it just tanks, down below some of the poorest countries in the world).
      Of course China did recover and become an economic powerhouse... under Deng Xiaoping rather than Mao Zedong *BECAUSE* Deng supported the ownership of private properties and businesses (though no political freedom... *cough cough* 1989 *cough cough*), something Mao, as a communist. wouldn't have done.

      Comparing Mao to Hitler is absurd. One of them increased the life expectancy of their population from 33 to 65. The other mass murdered jews and plunged an entire continent into total war for no benefits and only harm. Whatever way you look at it Mao improved his country, what existed before him was considerably worse. People's life expectancy does not go up when their lives are getting worse, it goes up when their lives are getting better.

    She was asked quite clearly and directly why the prospect of a person wearing a Mao t-shirt would cause less public outcry than an SS uniform. She stated correctly that some people would consider that Mao overall did more good than harm, which-however controversial the view may be to some-is a position absolutely impossible to hold in relation to the Nazi regime.
    She was absolutely right and explained the reasoning without defending Mao or endorsing the viewpoint herself. Anyone who thinks or suggests otherwise is politically illiterate and should do society a favour by stepping away from the discourse until they can find any semblance of nuance or critical thinking ability.

    When former Chinese premier Deng Xiaoping died, former Conservative PM Edward Heath remarked that he’d been China’s greatest leader. He said Deng’s famously crushing the protests in Tiananmen Square was of no consequence compared to his achievement in being the first to successfully feeding the entire Chinese nation. I guess it depends on your perspective - under the tank tracks, starving in a village, enjoying your retirement from politics sailing your yacht ... being an apologist is by definition, rather fraught, but it’s certainly true that the Communist dictators have had better press than the fascists.
