I've had my PKS Kephart for years and I love it. I have carried many fixed blade knives but my Kephart is my go-to blade. When my wife stepped down as Cubmaster to start a girls' Scouts BSA troop, the committee wanted to gift her with a knife. When asked, I said without hesitation:"Pathfinder Knife Shop Scorpion". When they received it, let's just say, more knives were purchased! (Everyone wanted their own) Top notch quality, fair price and American Made... buy one and you'll have a companion for life.

I have been using a PKS Mountaineer for several years AND bought one of their new Bowies a few months ago.
One word to describe these knives:
    OUT-FRICKEN-STANDING 😊 ❤

Its awesome they're making knives 3/32 thick. It was a common thickness for butcher/hunting knives of old. My green river hunter and vintage old hickory are 3/32 thick and they truly perform. Didn't think I'd see dave promoting knives like this because of how adamant he was in a knife needing to be 3/16 thick or at the very least 1/8. Good to see

I've enjoyed this style of sit down to go over the products from time to time, in addition to your normal educational videos. Especially on account of you guys routinely sell out of stock (good for you!) so it's nice to know what you've got cooking over there. Keep it up, I appreciate the straight forward nature of your kit and gear. I'm still beating the hell out of my Esees but I was thinking of adding a scandi grind to my kit over the Esee 3 flat grind that just isn't quite as good a carver, even if I keep it nice and sharp.

Since the 1st batch of the Wild Cat, way before the (dirty by design) output I purchased one. That blade will do anything for you in a camp; feather sticks, split wood, cut meat, fruit, bread and never fail sparks off a fero-frod with its sharp spine. If you keep them honed, PKS knives won't fail you.
Also have rave reviews about the Camp and Trail, which I gifted to a good friend.

"designed to be pleasing, but not gaudy" - Thank you! The curly maple on my PKS Scorpion is breathtakingly beautiful! When I opened the box I was so pleased, I love it.
My view on sheaths - I wish the knife came with one, but I'm left-handed and it is so difficult to find a left-handed sheath. Everyone selling a sheath with their knives is selling a right-handed sheath. Varusteleka is the only seller who offers left-handed sheaths - so that's where I got the sheath for my Scorpion. They are not the most lovely sheaths ever, but it works and fits on my left. Trying to use a right-handed sheath as a left-hander takes longer and is more likely to cause accident or injury as I have to either switch hands or flip the knife 180 to use it.

A lot of PKS knives are priced between $120 & $135 which is a real deal when compared to comparable knives in that category.
That Kephart Camp Master blade is calling to me. Always liked that profile and the little "guard" right before the blade is a nice extra without really preventing one from choking up on the blade for more precision tasks.

I'm always on the lookout for good AMERICAN-MADE products, especially knives. That said I need to pick up a PKS knife to add to my growing collection.
1095 is good steel provided a proper heat treatment is done on it. Most knife manufacturers have had plenty of time over the years to get that right.
But the real magic to 1095 is ease of edge maintenance when in the field. You could sharpen it on a flat rock if you had to. I've found a small ceramic rod and leather belt are more than enough to get my 1095s back to razor sharpness. If the edge is physically damaged then the Fallkniven DC4 sharpener and curse words come out to play.
More exotic steels like S30v/S35v, M390, Magnacut, etc. usually require the use of diamond stones and more time to restore the edge after it dulls.
Ain't no one got time for that in the field when you've already got traps and lines to check, resources to gather, food to prep, position to improve, etc.
While my folding knife might be S30v, 154CM, or 440HC (either a Buck 110 or satin blade ZT 0350) my main woodwork/camp chore belt knife is usually going to be some sort of carbon steel 1095 in the form of a TOPS BOB, Mora Garberg, etc.
And 1095 carbon steel is probably the best steel to use in small pocket folding whittling knives as well for all the same reasons.

I have a scorpion and it is the best knife I have ever owned. Hands down. However the sheath doesnt seem to measure up. I went to get in my truck as I lifted my leg it put pressure on the handle of the knife and unknown to me at the time the knife cut right through the threads on the sheath and the blade was then protruding from the bottom of the sheath. As i slid in i sliced my front seat about 4 inches across. Knife is amazing, i would find a different sheath.

Woodmuck would be nice for skinning large game, the camp companion would be great for birds and smaller game. I really like the Camp and Trail design. Mostly I just use a cheap skinning or boning knife… all our nice knives (safe in the kitchen or butcher shop) are primarily Victorinox Rosewood Handled boning, steaking, and a santanko for kitchen use. I’ve destroyed a couple cheap old boning knives camping and processing firewood etc… going to eventually have to invest in a decent outdoor knife one day 😂

I am friends with many knife makers, I have used it all, not being in anyway arrogant so please follow. I learned to sharpen a knife as an 8 year old and I use one today more than most as I guide for big game 30 animals a year ish.
1095, 01 tool steel are by far the best steels I own. If you carry a steel you can touch it up every so often it stays a razor. Pick sv30, 80crv2, cpm 3v, infi, I can’t sharpen them in the field like I can 1095. They stay sharp longer but when they go they are gone.

And 1095 is amazing with the proper hear treat, and I see how know it would save you caused a lot of cost those knives be in the $200 range if you were using super Steels or more and those other steels are unnecessary for a knife it would be an Unholy pain in the butt to sharpen some of those other steals today

I tend towards the "K.I.S.S" ideology when it comes to my handle materials etc anyway. Wood, bone or overmolded Rubber are where its at imo. Cheap, simple, effective & if you want something fancier you can etch the blade, carve the handle, change the handle all together etc. For me these are just ideal design characteristics for budget to midrange gear. It'll work out the box or you can do like i do & mod it to your liking without it hurting the wallet or the feelings so much. If the knife is too fancy you just wont use it the same.
